  • Mulberries, Mulberries everywhere! The ladies pick the mulberry tree and make some homemade jam....without store bought pectin!
    Mulberry Jam:
    2 lbs mulberries
    1/2 lemon
    1.5 to 2 cups sugar
    Rinse the mulberries off. You can stem them if you want, I don't bother! Put in a large pot and squeeze the lemon juice in. Then quarter up the lemon and throw it in (take the seeds out first). Add sugar. Cover and heat over low, stirring occasionally, for about 2 hrs. At about the 1 hr mark, use a potato masher or wooden spoon to crush the berries. To see if it's ready, take out a small spoonful, let cool, and see if it's sticky enough for your liking!

    Thanks for the info on Pectin Laura, I think I'll give some jam a go your way 😀

      Hope it worked out for you! It's definitely a learn-as-you go thing, it took me a few tries to figure out how to tell when jam/jelly is "ready"

    Thanks for the video. I made jam for the 1st time using your recipe. It tastes great but the consistency is to chunky. Do you put hot into jars? Do they seal? Or do you some other preservation method?

    The mulberries bring bring back my childhood. The worst part was the stems.

    • @TealHouseFarm
      @TealHouseFarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is VERY true. I've found that it's easier to just leave the stems on for anything that's cooked or baked. You really can't tell they are there! I only stem them if we're eating them fresh!

    I'd charge more for those mulberry fed chicken eggs. :) At least it helps cut the feed costs.

    Finally !? For tow pounds of mulberry we must use 6 cups of sugars as you said at beginning or jut 2 cups as recommended at the end🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @TealHouseFarm
      @TealHouseFarm  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sunny! You need 6 cups of sugar if you are using a store bought pectin packet. You only need 2 cups if you make it without adding pectin (using the chopped up lemon and longer cooking time instead). Hope that helps!

      I've seen mulberry jelly online before. I think a lot of places don't carry it because the mulberry is such a pain to stem, no one wants to grow a bunch on purpose lol.

    My Mulberry jelly always turned out to be syrup, which was good. I didn't know it was a low pectin fruit. I bet you see purple chicken poop everywhere.

      Yes, yes we do lol. But it's ok. It's a trade off I'll take in exchange for all those delicious berries!

    Oh my God they are so adorable! Kids are adorable at that age. They look like cabbage patch dolls. Unfortunately there is a rather unpleasant transformation as they approach their teen years.
