Can't stand how they watered down baseball with rule "changes" and calling New York for instant replay reviews. Let the umps do their job. If ur gonna use replay let the actual umpires make the call. Like the NFL.. Not calling clear across the country. SMH.....IF IT AINT BROKE DONT TRY AND FIX IT!
Priceless. If you were alive in this time you really realize how perfect the time was. May sound strange that this evokes those emotions but people said what they had to say and moved on and laughed about it later.
The funny thing is that the O's actually won this game. In 1980 Baltimore won 100 games but lost the division to the Yankees by 3 games. Amazing. Classic clip!
@@erose964 It's not anymore. Angel Hernandez and the rest of the merry little men of modern umpiring have seen to that. Watch some Jomboy clips of umpires not taking this shit anymore. XD LOL
That's because the call didn't matter. What mattered was team morale... so Earl hauls out of the dugout to put on some gorilla theater for the fans and the team. He's out there fussing at the ump for them... Instead of thinking about the balk, or thinking, "Damn... what ELSE is gonna go wrong?" Everyone's drawn into this animated back and forth between the ump and the manager. Usually, nobody by the people closest to the ump and the manager can hear what's being said anyway. Never in the history of the game, was a call made by an ump, ever changed, because players or managers threw a fit about it. NEVER. Everyone involved knew it going in... So 99% of the time, umps didn't even take these arguments seriously... and neither did the managers or the league offices... It was gorilla theater and it added some zing to the game. Watch Billy Martin, Lou Pinella, Tommy LaSorda, Sparky Anderson, Earl Weaver and more, venting their spleens to the umpires... and then, listen to the fans... look at the players and how they play. The game goes from "ho-hum... only 160 more of these to go..." to players playing just a smidge harder and fans even more into the game than they were before. We need to ditch the replays and crap from the game, and get back to stuff just like we see here in the video. It all was part of the magic of the game.
The best part of this wonderful tirade was told by the late Mike Flanagan who was called for the balk. At the end of the “discussion “ Weaver goes to the mound to ask Flanagan if he thought he balked and Flanagan said yes I did! 😁😁😁
His other gem here: Earl's ranting about calling the league office and demanding that Haller never work O's games, and Haller's reply was perfect--"what do I care?"
Maybe Earl had an early dinner reservation. There was a story about one catcher back in the day, last game of the season and his team eliminated by Labor Day, who asked the home plate ump to run him early in the game, so he could catch an earlier flight home.
It’s been mentioned on here but I think it deserves repeating. The scoreboard says 1 out and 1 hit in the top of the first. Some people in attendance haven’t even taken a sip of their beer yet, and this goes down. Epic.
He went out there to save Eddie from getting ejected. Eddie was about to get into it with Haller, and Weaver went out to one-up any protest that Eddie had. Earl knew that he was more likely to win if his players weren't tossed, and if that meant he was, that was a better outcome.
I was lucky to see the Earl of Baltimore many times as a kid at Memorial Stadium on 33rd. Earl Weaver was a fantastic manager, my father always got us season tickets so I witnessed Earl tossed out of games many many times over the years, he always gave it his all, you are missed Earl Weaver.
The best part of this is that Earl knows every time he turns back around the fans are gonna go wild. So he gets a little further away each time and then turns back around
Yeah, the handful of them who are actually in the stands. It was like 5 pitches into the game, and a lot probably hadn't even gotten to their seats yet.
That's Kenny Kaiser. As Luciano said in his book he looks like humpty dumpty and they put his arms on backwards. Didn't put up with anything.. Passed away from diabetic complications in 2017.....
In the late 1970s, there was an era when AL umpires had Earl Weaver, Billy Martin, and Don Zimmer managing at the same time. I don't know how those umps managed to stay with the game.
@@claymarston8764 And you can find a slightly longer version of the ending of this where he says, "J.... C....! We've just started this goshdarn thing!"
@PlayingTyme it was one of Tom's first games in the AL if I recall and old Earl complained to the AL office and got Haller's crew reassigned from Detroit and Baltimore games the rest of the season.
This is legendary, a gold standard. Earl Weaver " THIS CREW IS HERE JUST TO F... US" . Umpire Bill Haller " YEAH BOOM ( YOU'RE OUTTA HERE) . I wonder if those two are still going back and forth where they are today in heaven. RIP EARL WEAVER AND BILL HALLER.
It was an act. Earl loved being the center of attention and fed off the crowd’s cheers. If the stands were empty, none of this extended silliness happens.
Eddie got to be witness to both Earl Weaver and Tommy Lasorda tirades for about 80% of his career. He could probably publish an anecdotal book of quotes that would be about 500 pages of FUCK and GODDAMMIT lol
@@markroberts928 That’s OK because Tommy, Billy, Whitey, Sparky and Earl were gutsy managers. Baseballs gone WOKE nowdays and it’s not the same. The tough guys are gone…😞
Ah, classic use of “woke” meaning “anything I don’t like”. It’s such a meaningless term. Anyway, role of the manager is fundamentally different. Instant replay has made it so that arguing most calls is pretty useless. Run the replay if they got it wrong. Getting yourself run out of a game isn’t “tough”, it’s just stupid, unless you’re trying to keep your player from getting themselves ejected or trying to fire up your team. Hell, that’s what Earl’s doing here - he sees Eddie Murray getting into with the ump, he goes in to get himself run instead of Murray because Murray is more important than he is to win the game. Earl might have had a temper but he was smart - he knew exactly what he was doing when he left the dugout. He’s brilliant, and just chalking that up to “he’s tough” completely undersells Earl Weaver as a manager.
If social media heard or saw this today, everyone would be screaming for Earl to not only be fired but banned from baseball. These were the days of baseball
What are you talking about? People would be doing what they're doing now -- laughing their @$$ off. If anything, people would be debating if the umpire was right when he said that Earl Weaver f***ed up in the 1969, 71, and 79 World Series.
Today's managers micro-manage games, to the point where it's almost unwatchable. A couple of them have pulled pitchers throwing no-hitters on pitch count. Earl's game managing style? Sit back and wait for the 3 run homer. It also helps to have a pitching staff with multiple 20 game winners, tho, lol.
Sad but true, MLB isn't what it use to be, as a matter of fact none of the major US sports are what they use to be. I miss the days where players played hurt because they hungered for victory, today if a player has a pimple on his face he is put on the DL.
@@TheLeadSled That why one of the very, very few truly unbreakable records just happens to be a baseball record and it’s Cal Ripken’s consecutive games played streak. They play a different game now. Miguel Tejada’s streak ended in 2007 at 1,152 games. Currently the longest active streak the 2nd baseman for the Royals, named Whit Merrifield and he’s played in 481 consecutive games.
Earl Weaver was one of baseball's funniest characters and greatest comedians. But as a manager, Earl Weaver was also one of baseball's greatest tacticians and winners. The Orioles were pretty much perennial winners under Earl's watch, as he managed them from 1968-1982, and again from 1985-1986. And the only time Earl suffered a losing season with the Orioles was 1986. And yes, he was tough on his players...but he loved his players, too, and he always stood up and fought his players. In other words, Earl Weaver was someone you would love to play for.

@@LinkRocks I don't know about that, from what I've read and heard, they really couldn't stand each other. Not that Earl ever had a lot of affection for any umpire.
Whenever I am having a bad day, I watch this and almost immediately, I feel better.
I love how the crowd just roars every time Weaver goes back for more!
1 of the best baseball clips of all time. Haller saying he'll be in the Hall of Fame for fking up the world series has me 😆
This is how men argue and it’s not pretty 😂
I’m still bitter about the 79 collapse.
Must have been a painful thing to hear, considering the Orioles had a 3-1 lead in the series.
That is an absolutely savage line. So quick on his feet.
Savage enough to be true. Earl is in the HOF. Self-own (preplanned) by sneaky ump.
I’ve watched this so many times. It’s so funny
I grew up with this. It's why I love baseball to this day.
Lol ohh the old days. It's not as long of a argument now. How many times did he walk back. This is gold haha
Today's game just isn't the same. That's why I stopped watching MLB over 20 years ago.
Any Marylanders here? For me the golden years were 69-83…. Wild Bill (?) in the stands at Memorial Stadiums, Eddie Murray, Ken Singleton, Rick Dempsey, Jim P & the 4 other 20-win pitchers that year….? Well, damned never thought I’d forget that. Was it 75?
Can't stand how they watered down baseball with rule "changes" and calling New York for instant replay reviews. Let the umps do their job. If ur gonna use replay let the actual umpires make the call. Like the NFL.. Not calling clear across the country. SMH.....IF IT AINT BROKE DONT TRY AND FIX IT!
@@thomasexler7127, I knew when they allowed the last expansion and started inter-league they'd ruin it. The silly rule changes just made it worse.
This is hands down one of the funniest manager freak outs I’ve ever heard 😂
I can’t count the times I have watched this great clip. It always puts a smile on my face.
Priceless. If you were alive in this time you really realize how perfect the time was. May sound strange that this evokes those emotions but people said what they had to say and moved on and laughed about it later.
Whenever I need a good laugh, this is my go-to video. It’s never gets old 😂😂
Ranks up there with "What did I think of Kingman's performance?" Which, sadly, is audio only.
More like the Jerry Springer Show!!!

Seeing Earl in action was worth every penny during his Oriole tenure!
Being a Red Sox fan in those days, I got to see Weaver and Billy Martin a lot, they were nuts.
"Oh you're going to be in the Hall of Fame? For fucking up a World Series?" Haha... I'm ded.
Well, Earl DID make the HOF. Bill hasn't yet.
@@bowlersinger Bill's got as much chance of making the HOF as Angel Hernandez.
That's a GREAT clap back. And even the 'count games, stupid' is wrong since 69 and 70 cancel each other out and he lost in 71 and 79 to Pittsburgh.

This made my day!! Earl Weaver was great.. a great conversation with the Ump. My wife is getting back surgery and needed this.
I bet Earl was the life of any party. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He was actually a very intelligent and well rounded guy. He loved gardening and was a Shakespeare buff.
The funny thing is that the O's actually won this game. In 1980 Baltimore won 100 games but lost the division to the Yankees by 3 games. Amazing. Classic clip!
That throw out is legendary. Boom!
I like it that Bill Haller cusses Weaver right back - that's about all Weaver understood, anyway.
😂😂😂 “you’re a liar. No, you’re a liar. No, you’re a liar”. The best.
Pee Wee Herman:
"I know you are, but what am I?"
They never even discuss the balk call.😂😂
Pride and ego on the line. lol
So, why is crap like this tolerated in baseball
@@erose964 It's not anymore. Angel Hernandez and the rest of the merry little men of modern umpiring have seen to that. Watch some Jomboy clips of umpires not taking this shit anymore. XD LOL
@@BigBlack81 What do you mean, "taking this shit?" He threw weaver out 6 seconds after he opened his mouth.
The World Series remark is golden. 😆
His other gem here: Earl's ranting about calling the league office and demanding that Haller never work O's games, and Haller's reply was perfect--"what do I care?"
That hit him where he lived.
Well his plaque lives in Cooperstown, so yes, Earl did make the HOF. Another great call by Haller. Got it right in spite of himself.
And to think these modern Sabre metrics nerds want to get rid of these interactions for robots. No thank you. These fucking kids ruin everything
@@Furry67… in cooperstown?
1:50 Notice how it's the top of the 1st. Earl doesn't waste any time.
Epic.
Earl knew how to get the stands involved. I’ll never forget his antics on the field. Great coach. RIP Sir.
Except there was hardly anyone in the stands! The place looks empty.
@@jah0524 and if everyone in the stands could hear the audio, they'd realize that Haller was making Earl look like a clown.
He went out there to save Eddie from getting ejected. Eddie was about to get into it with Haller, and Weaver went out to one-up any protest that Eddie had. Earl knew that he was more likely to win if his players weren't tossed, and if that meant he was, that was a better outcome.
@@jah0524 but this was everyday. It wasn’t just to show off! He knew baseball. What he lacked in size he made up for in temper in we all loved it.
@@finewinematt what made him a great manager! 👍
Regarding the description of this video, those are not the Minnesota Twins. That's the Detroit Tigers.
Thanks
I was lucky to see the Earl of Baltimore many times as a kid at Memorial Stadium on 33rd. Earl Weaver was a fantastic manager, my father always got us season tickets so I witnessed Earl tossed out of games many many times over the years, he always gave it his all, you are missed Earl Weaver.
That must have been so much fun, I envy you.
Earl was tossed so many times, that when Cal Ripken Sr. finally took over, he had more than half a season's experience as O's manager, lol.
I was there as a freshman in college. Had no clue what fight was about but we roared w/laughter. Earl was the very best. Fun team.
Everything was better in the 80’s
except for the weird fashions.
And the 1970s
That home plate umpire looks like the Roadrunner dropped an anvil on his head.😂
That's Kenny Kaiser. As Luciano said in his book he looks like humpty dumpty and they put his arms on backwards. Didn't put up with anything.. Passed away from diabetic complications in 2017.....
Wow! Hearing Earl changes my outlook towards him.
This video is freaking AMAZING!!!!!!!
R.I.P. Bill Haller.
The fact Earl did this 5 pitches into the game shows he had the confidence that his team could win this game without him coaching.
He knew the Haller clan were total Det. biased
I don't follow baseball but this is one of the best highlights of ANY sport I have ever seen.
I love how Murray see's Weaver and even he's like "O boy here we go"
He came out to keep Murray from getting tossed. But I think Haller would have taken a little more shit from Eddie than from Earl.
I can watch this a million + times..
Better keep at it. It’s only at 33k.
@@TheDizzleHawke 🤣🤣
In the late 1970s, there was an era when AL umpires had Earl Weaver, Billy Martin, and Don Zimmer managing at the same time. I don't know how those umps managed to stay with the game.
2:05 Earl was right about one thing. He made it to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Wrong about Haller touching him, tho. Earl came closer to poking Haller in the face, than Haller's finger came to Earl.
For fucking up the World Series.
Now THAT was baseball. What a great time for the sport.
A great time for all pro sports.
I was waiting for John Madden to chime in with Tough Actin Tinactin after Bill Haller's "Boom!" RIP Legends
Bill just passed away. A legendary moment in baseball.
I bet him and Earl are in Heaven still arguing
This is pure gold conversation, but what really makes this clip exraordinary is the neckless umpire at the end.

How about the crow hop with the “boom” from Haller!!😂😂
Earl Weaver went straight up Columbo. "and 1 more thing before I go".....
😂
As I recall, at the end of clip Weaver goes to his pitcher and ask him, “did you balk?” You know, after losing his mind over the call.
Bill Haller is the brother of former MLB catcher Tom Haller.
He umpired the plate in Detroit once when his brother caught for the Tigers.
@PlayingTyme it was one of Tom's first games in the AL if I recall and old Earl complained to the AL office and got Haller's crew reassigned from Detroit and Baltimore games the rest of the season.
Earl Weaver, Billy Martin , lou Pinella
Tremendous managers

Earl…. I miss this kind of manager!
Bill Haller handled this beautifully.
And his finger never came withing 4" of Earl, lol.
He was also correct that Earl lost more WS games than he won.
Right. You’re full of s-- F you. Love it!!f
The good old days. Gone but not forgotten
I can’t imagine any coach today being this passionate
It was an act. Earl loved being the center of attention and fed off the crowd’s cheers. If the stands were empty, none of this extended silliness happens.
HAAA...YABOOM! Legendary ejection and 'enlightening' discussion.
Man how I miss the old days of baseball! If you like this one, search for "Managers Corner with Earl Weaver".
I'd heard that turned out to be a prank, but it's still worth the price of admission.
The skip and hop Bill Haller did on the throw out call needs to be in a movie!
I bet my life Eddie Murray has so many Earl stories lol!
0:36 GET YOUR FINGER OFF ME!!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
They sound like two brothers arguing.😂😂
"What are you going in for Earl? Fucking up the Worlds Series?" LOL!!!!🤣🤣🤣
If social media heard or saw this today, everyone would be screaming for Earl to not only be fired but banned from baseball. These were the days of baseball
What are you talking about? People would be doing what they're doing now -- laughing their @$$ off.
If anything, people would be debating if the umpire was right when he said that Earl Weaver f***ed up in the 1969, 71, and 79 World Series.
if you dont miss the old days....you are very unfortunate!
🤣🤣🤣 This is great. Old throwback ump vs manager argument at it's best
Man, this is just amazing
That ump isn't a pussy, either. He handles it calmly. Today's umpires would've started crying
Yep, especially if that umpire's name was Ángel Hernández. He'd be the first one to cry.

Maybe it’s because the players are soft. Maybe it’s because they make too much money and don’t want to risk getting hurt. I don’t know, but Ripken played in 2,632 straight games.
This was amazing, and only 5 pitches into the game wow
