GLU were a mixture of Industrial, electronic, and techno, with a bit of grunge fuzziness, all existing in perfect harmony. Over 20 years later, I'm still listening to this album.
I'm 16 and I thank to the life I found this... God Lives Underwater is one of my all-time favourite bands, AND THEY'RE SOOO UNDERATED... I'm glad I one of the few ones who can enjoy this. RIP David R.
Good on you man. I’m 23 and have gotten into the more obscure old industrial acts the last 2-3 years (Machines of Loving Grace, GLU, Chemlab, Die Warzau, MLWTTKK, Sister Machine Gun). Good to see at least a few young people my age have rediscovered it.
this came out when i was in my late teens into my '20's...but i still know great music when i hear it...nothing has been the same since the 90's...wtf?...good music just fell off the face of the earth...this is the only place we can come and re-live our past...such a shame that we've lost so many great singers...
@@notturok7841 Damned if it does! Like it was made yesterday, current as hell! We have much to reflect upon and learn from 1960-early-1970 rock/pop/soul/funk
In 1999 or thereabouts, I was working in a small company in Natick Massachusetts, about a half hour west of Boston, in a small office park behind a shopping center. I was in my early 20's, and GLU was often playing in my car- this song on repeat, in particular. At lunch one day, I randomly stopped into the small Newbury Comics store in the shopping center. I could not believe my eyes. In the back of this small retail store, in the middle of a weekday, God Lives Underwater were about to perform! There was a GIANT mixing board in front of the band, in my memory it was at least 15 feet wide by 6 feet deep. It was so surreal, so random, I was kind of in shock. And then they started playing. I have never heard anything else as loud as that, period. I'm talking, full-on Stadium-level sound in a tiny shop. Fucking Mount Krakatoa exploding-level on the decibel meter. It broke my heart, but I had to leave after a song and a half because it was ridiculously painful. But I love that I had that chance encounter and great memory of a great band.
They must have used the same sound system at the Nashua Newbury Comics when local band Nullset played there 8/18/2001. I don't know how I could stay so long in the store to see the full set. I remember when NC had band performances, like Ra, Jerry Cantrell, and 6 Gig, but they're not so exciting these days.
diagnosed bipolar 1 at 18.. this song is very fitting for a manic episode.. starts off so great.. feeling like you're on top of the world, quickly goes south though. the happiness turns into explosive anger, ready to destroy anything and everything. I broke apart my entire family from a single episode. Here I am, my anger and me.
I can't believe I just now found out that David died. Discovering GLU in the mid-90s completely changed my musical tastes, my friends and I were obsessed with them, saw them live several times. I still have yet to hear such an interesting unique industrial rock sound from any other band since. Does anyone know where I can find info on how they got their sound? Especially that electro-guitar sound on the first EP and 'Empty'. RIP David, thank you for changing my life with your amazing art.
I was just learning digital music production when I discovered this album. It was a crazy mix of rock and electronic. Very out there! Inspired me a lot. Its definitely one of my favorite albums, just unheralded, solid, grungy, and difficult to characterize.
There will never be anything like GLU ever again.. truly a once in a lifetime band.. Love everything about this band since I was a young teen, and always will. RIP Dave
@SHOEINNSALES Dave wasn't on drugs or anything, he died in an anesthesia related accident at the dentist. So sad, cause he knew not to mess with drugs, and some stupid doctor made a mistake. : (
Fuckin' a. This makes me feel old. Saw these guys open for Ministry at the Electric Factory in Philly back in - 98 / 99? I just NOW learned of Dave's death even though I lost track of them after their first few albums. Great band - never got enough play. Late 90's had the best shit - industrial still kicks all ass. Try to pass this shit off now adays and it's a bunch of pansies playing lame rock. GLU knew how to do it right...
I remember when i was 3, I'd be in the car with my mom and I always made my mom play this song over and over again. I miss being a toddler. Those were the good times. ♥
Didn't know this guy is dead. I saw them back in maybe 95ish toured with Life of Agony....I think??? At a little place called the Fairbanks inn, Winter Park Florida.
I remember seeing this video on rock monthly videos in the mid-90's. I subscribed to the vhs videos and this band was supposed to be the next NIN but they didn't take off as expected and later he got cancer and unfortunately passed away. A shame.....
discovered them the old fashion way, just rummaging through tapes in the store mall and found empty, thought the art work was cool and the band name too, never heard or seen them on tv and magazines, obviously no internet back then. I liked what i heard, they were one of those post layne staley bands, probably the only one. But i still like them because they're techno+alt rock and not trying to be hard rock like aic.
Awesome band. Mr Bungle was good too. Their first song I ever heard was Midlife Crisis back in like 2008 on some TH-cam video about the original Star Wars battlefront. It blew my ten year old mind away
@@stoneylonesome4062 Yaaaas! Angel Dust was and still is a criminally underrated album! Same with King for a Day, those two albums imo were by far the pinnacle of Faith No More.

David Reilly was truly an innovative artist who helped to alter the punk genre into a more hypnotizing form of music that will appeal to every generation from here on out at some point in their musical journeys of evolutionary taste and preference.
OMG, so did I, along with my future (and still) wife & my best friend! That was in like 1995... When you are experiencing things like rivets on a bridge being eyeballs watching you, and the color purple sounding like fuzz and smelling like cedarwood and the air tasting like a soldering iron... it was perfect. I learned more in 2 nights than in 5 years. But not everything I learned was a pleasant experience.
