- Kumbakonam Temples city! Kumbakonam (formerly spelt as Coombaconum or Combaconum) is a town and a special grade municipality in the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located 40 km (25 mi) from Thanjavur and 273 km (170 mi) from Chennai and is the headquarters of the Kumbakonam taluk of Thanjavur district. The town is bounded by two rivers, the Kaveri River to the north and Arasalar River to the south. Kumbakonam is known as a "temple town" due to the prevalence of a number of temples here and is noted for its Mahamaham festival which attracts people from all over the country.
Kumbakonam dates back to the Sangam period and was ruled by the Early Cholas, Pallavas, Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas, Pandyas, the Vijayanagara Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Thanjavur Nayaks and the Thanjavur Marathas. It rose to be a prominent town between the 7th and 9th centuries AD, when it served as a capital of the Medieval Cholas. The town reached the zenith of its prosperity during the British Raj when it was a prominent centre of European education and Hindu culture; and it acquired the cultural name, the "Cambridge of South India". In 1866, Kumbakonam was officially constituted as a municipality, which today comprises 45 wards, making it the largest municipality.
Kumbakonam is the largest city in delta district and second largest city in Trichy surrounding. And our city was one of the important commercial trading center in Trichy surrounding. And in past three years kumbakonam developed more in economically and population wise also. And day by day the development was going on kumbakonam and population also getting rises but we didn't have a good road facility to control the city traffic and we didn't have a separate revenue department for us. kumbakonam is the largest tax paying municipality in Trichy surrounding after Trichy corporation but we didn't considered by any government parties. And the kumbakonam is the headquarters for many organizations like CUB, KMBF and TNSTC Kmu. And the circle office of Indian bank also here only. And in recent days many Showrooms and trading companies started in kumbakonam. So kindly take any action for promote our town to separate district then kumbakonam will get its required infrastructure.
எங்கள் சொந்த ஊர் கும்பகோணம். கும்பகோணம் மாவட்டம் ஆக்க வேண்டும் கும்பகோணம் மாவட்ட தாலுகாக்கள் திருவிடைமருதூர் ,பாபநாசம், வலங்கைமான், ஆடுதுறை, திருவையாறு, நாச்சியார் கோவில், திருப்பனந்தாள் , அணைக்கரை. இவையெல்லாம் கும்பகோணம் மாவட்டத்தில் வரவேண்டும். சோழநாட்டுக் தமிழன் என்று சொல்லடா தலை நிமிர்ந்து நில்லடா வாழ்க குடந்தை.

கும்பகோணம் சோழர்கள் காலத்தில் சோழர்களின் மத்திய தலை நகரம் . இதன் சிறப்புகள் கண்டு நான் இங்கே பிறக்கலைனு கவலையா இருக்கு . 13 மாவட்ட மத்திய தலைநகரம் . ஆனால் ,மாவட்ட தகுதி பெற்றும் மாவட்டம் என்ற அறிவுப்பு இல்லாதது வேதனை

கும்பகோணம் எனக்கு பிடிக்கும் ஆனால் அதை மாவட்டம் ஆக்க வேண்டாம் ஏனென்றால் அது தஞ்சாவூரில் இருந்தால்தான் தஞ்சை மாவட்டத்திற்கே பெருமை
