    Ciao Marco, could you please consider a „two face“ bust? One side with ALL the layers you usually do - the layers that are surprising anyone and only makes sense for you (in the beginning) Side two should be a „regular painted“ face with just base, highlights and shadows. I would really like to see what all the additional steps do at the end. So a regular/Marco style hybrid😀

    But I like doing the glazing steps with a brush! 😭😪
    Great video! I'm really glad you brought up incorporating patterns into the painting steps. Too often you see people do all this great work on a mini, then they go and paint camouflage or freehand symbols over it and it looks unnatural. One thing I'd like to see is more art history in relation to mini painting. You're really knowledgeable in this area and I don't think it gets brought up enough. I'd love to see some Frank Frazetta style miniature painting!

    I remember when I got back into the hobby 4 months ago, the clerk at the GW store asked me if I wanted to buy some contrast paints:
    -Never heard of them, what are they for?
    -They're great for easy, beginner friendly speed painting!
    -Nah, I want to take my time with my miniatures, no thanks.
    Me after watching Marco Frisoni:
    -I need contrast paints to achieve specific textures and complex modulations over air-brushed value sketches!!!😂
    Thanks a lot Marco, you're doing an amazing job showcasing the true potential of each tool we have in miniature painting!

    Spectacular Marco, as always I learn more from your videos.
    Something I've noticed more on this video that even others, is the way you use the brush for highlighting. Being super accurate but also random; mixing between a stroke and stippling - really seems to give you a more realistic look, simulating the random points of light that occur on natural objects.
    I think it would be very interesting for a video to hear your thoughts around use of the brush, where you're thinking of placing highlights etc,
    Cheers mate

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a million! You totally got the point; a bit or randomness is natural and integral part of the behaviour of the airbrush (that's why in 2D illustration is so great in creating photorealistic textures and effects) so instead of fighting it we should embrace and use it...

    Amazing work! Its always fascinating to hear how you logically come about your color choices. Its VERY helpful to hear the classical origins of the techniques! Perhaps a video where you take a master's painting technique from a specific painting after a visit to a museum, and then apply it to a model. I always wondered how advanced painters decide to put colors in locations that don't initially make sense, but as a whole it works in the end.

    Great video. But can you answer this. Is there a difference between matt and glaze medium? I use matt medium for glazing

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!!! From the
      chemical point of view they are the same stuff, acrylic paint medium. Usually glazing mediums are just a bit more liquid and fluid. What I used in the video is a mat glaze medium!

    Hey Marco!
    Do you use kolinsky brushes with contrast paints, or switch to synthetic ones for them?
    I've seen in some videos around youtube (specifically Squidmar's), that you should not use kolinsky brushes with washes/contrast paints, for it will kill them too quick, and I cannot remember you mentioning thing about that.
    So I'm really interested - do you (& should I) use Kolinsky Sable brushes for washes/contrast paints/acrylic inks/high flow paints? Probably not for washes, but really not sure about other cases. I got my own first set of quality kolinsky brushes not far ago, but have not used them yet, so I'm quite interested :)

      Hi! I use my W&N Series 7 for everything 😁. This is just another classic urban myth... It's true that washes and fluid paints naturally tend to flow into the ferrule (drying paint collected where the bristles are tight together is what makes them open), but if you clean and maintain your brushes properly (check my video about brushes 😉) there's absolutely no problem. The only paints that really increase the stress on the bristles (and just a bit) are metallic paints because their pigments are real tiny metal flakes and I still use natural bristles because they are simply better for painting 😁 You can use them even with oils with a bit of care!

    Do you think Golden high flow would do the same or similar job as the contrast paints in the early stages? Or does the particular characteristics of contrast assist here?

      I haven't used contrast paints but I do use Golden high flow. You can get the same effects if you have a good underpainting/sketch and add some medium (there's high flow gel mediums from different brands that do this, but Golden makes one specifically for this purpose) or airbrush thinner to thin down the paint. The high flow line has a lot of pigment, so sometimes it can be a bit too opaque if you just slap it on willy-nilly right out of the bottle (which can be useful in its own way). You can also see Marco use gel medium (that clear, translucent, white fluid) which can be used with any acrylic paint to get the same qualities of contrast paint.
      The nice thing about contrast paint is that it has all this stuff ready to go right out of the bottle, so you don't have to worry about mixing the right consistency. Personally, I'd say mess around with paint additives even when you're not comfortable with them because it gives you another tool in your tool belt once you step out of your comfort zone. I think a lot of us miniature painters can develop the bad habit of "paint by number" where we act too precise in our work flow. Sometimes, you just have to fuck around and find out.

      I personally think any thinned down acrylic paint with a flow improver of any kind will do the work for you buddy.

    • @spamstabber
      @spamstabber 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes absolutely, there's nothing you can do with contrast paint that you can't do with anything else.
      Rather use liquitex inks anyway, they are better value for money by far.

    Any chance of a vid comparing some skin tone sets? I have no idea which one to go with.
    Scale75 have: "Flesh Paint Set" and "Velvet Skin".
    AK Interactive have: "Flesh and Skin Colors" and "Human Flesh Tones".
    Vallejo have: "Face Painting Set" and "Fleshtones".
    Vallejo also has the 16 bottle "Face and Skin Tones" set. But I think that might be overkill for a noob.

    Do you have any tips for integrating verdaccio underpainting into painting darker skin tones?

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can be used in a darker, more bluish version (like a pale emerald tone) to obtain a similar visual complexity in darker skin tones. Basically you take away the yellow note to maximise the contrast with the warmer tones of the upper layers!

      @KyleLigon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No don't think like that. That's the thing about Marco - Before i found his channel i watched two kinds of painting videos: ones that i understood the technique, but was simple and unrewarding, and the insanely good painters, who didn't or couldn't convey their skill in a way that made any sense to me. But Marco has been the missing link. All sorts of things that lay under the covers of paint have been made so much more clear. i feel not only as though I can better understand them, but that I try them and in some sense ACHIEVE them. Now im nothing like the level of painter that Marco is, but i honest to goodness feel as though I can digest, try, practice, and (if only a bit at a time) realize some of the techniques he uses. Its like, after year of stalling, i feel momentum building, and really it is Marco's AMAZING explanations that did it.
