In the first episode of this miniseries we looked at the pretty pictures. This round, books have also... WORDS 😅😂😅A lot of words!!! There's a game changing book for every level of painter in here (even non miniature painters!), just grab what fits best your level of experience!

Good selection of books. I'd add Blue & Yellow Don't Make Green for details about how to think about color mixing. I would also commend Bill Horan's Military Modeling Masterclass, and How to Build Dioramas by Sheperd Paine especially if you're thinking about putting models into an environment.
I'd further recommend James Gurney's TH-cam channel, so you can watch the virtually magical transformation from a few splotches of color to amazingly detailed art.

I found Art Fundamentals to be much more useful than Color & Light. It had everything in Gurney's book, explained better, and much more. If I had to re-buy and only had money to buy one, Art Fundamentals is the one.

Have miniature painted on and off for close to 30 years but took up water color less than five ago. The learning and study I have done there for watercolor has done more for my miniature painting than any white dwarf article, mini specific book and almost all youtube content (this channel excluded) aimed at tabletop gaming painting. With a cheap airbrush and underpainting I achieved units that look amazing, vibrant and very different to what you would expect.
Also marco, explore using watercolor on minis as an alternative to oils. It is.. interesting. Might be good as a more kid friendly alternative to achieve similar results. Reminds me of one of those new speedpaints that is reactivated by water (seems to be a bug) but the mini painting community is trying to pass this off as a feature.. yet none of these people have made the connection. Yet.

+1 for James Gurney's books -- he also has a YT channel where he works through paintings and gives you some insights into his thought process. They're short and used to drive traffic to his more lucrative ventures, but useful and fun to watch IMO, and I learn as much from him as I do from mini-painters.

I was actually going to bring a spare copy of it (that I picked up at a local Berlin store) to your Dublin workshop to give away and share my love for this book but sadly forgot to pack it. It's such a conceptual and thoughtful book, in stark contrast to so many paint-by-the-numbers miniature painting books out there. Amazing (PS: I bought most of your book recommendations so far and have especially benefitted from the "Art of MTG" ones, so thanks for that!)

    Hi there,
I very much enjoy your videos.
Especially that you take the Miniature painting out of this strange bubble and put it into the much bigger context of Art.
Many of the books you show I already have, thank you for this review.
I wanted to point you to a man you might not have heard of and who I find very inspiring:
Sanzō Wada. He left a work of color combinations, I think the first of this kind. I find these combinations most inspiring and usefull, not only for miniatures but also for
different things like Powerpoint presentations or Posters.
There is a book " A Dictionary of Color Combinations" but also a very useful website!
