    Hello I am a fairly recent subscriber here but i was delighted to see this video. I learnt to paint in the 1990's and this is exactly the method i have always used. Acrylics were fairly new and were only considered good for undercoats back then. I still have and use my original set of windsor and Newton paints. I have about 20 tubes and have never needed more and won't for years to come. On my pallet i only put dots of paint with a wooden toothpick this is often enough but not always. So they are also the most economic paints available. And yes, i have painted hundreds of minis, though mostly in 54mm not for wargaming. Realy enjoying your work. All the best.

      No idea where you got the idea acrylic paints were terrible even in the late 90’s?!? I’m baffled by that, professional artists have been using high quality acrylic paints for decades… they have certainly become much easier to use in recent years and even cheaper acrylics work very well where as in the past you had to spend a pretty decent amount to get any acrylic of decent quality.
      My mom has been an acrylic artist who works on board, canvas, metal, and paper since the mid 70’s and her old work still looks great.
      I’m pretty sure one of the most respected galleries in Canada wouldn’t be exhibiting her work for the last 4/5 decades if her use of acrylics was seen as of poor quality and unprofessional.
      She does say they are harder to work with, but she prefers the speed at which acrylics allow one to work as a huge benefit…But acrylics sure are less fussy then they used to be that’s for sure!
      So I’m just a bit confused by your comment… maybe you could clarify just in case I’m misunderstanding something here…

    As someone who has just started on this oil painting minis journey, I'd say don't worry about the cost of materials.
    30 UK pounds bought me ten 37ml tubes of winton oil paint (from which basically any shade could be created by mixing) and a bottle of artist's odour free spirit (and hardware store spirit is apparently fine, so I overspent). Buying a certain well know brand of acrylics, the same amount of money wouldn't even get you five 12ml pots.
    Now, I just have to learn to paint! 😆
    Your vids are great, you're so happy. Is it something in the fumes? 😉

      😁 Awesome! Abteilung paints are nothing special in general, just a bit less oily but it's not such a big game changer in my opinion. You can totally stick to W&N. What I really like of the Abteilung line are specific tones for weathering that can be extremely glossy (bitumen for example) or extremely mat (rust and dust tones)

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oil paints and white spirit don't interact chemically with the layer of water based paint underneath so varnish is not mandatory but it can used to modulate the impact of oils over the acrylic layer; mat varnish absorbs more paint grabbing it in its microscopic rough finish while satin and gloss varnishes let the paint flow better for smoother blends. 99% of the time I don't use varnish!

    "The final quality is quite superior"
    So if you had the exact same model and did your best paint job with acrylics (and/or used the same amount of time), and put the figures side by side....
    Could we see that, perhaps? =)

    • @meatybtz
      @meatybtz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only issue is that only oil paints make smooth blends. All the washes and tricks we use with acrylic paints are to try to get closer to the oil blends, but side by side, the oils really make the acrylic look bad.

    • @ColonelSandersLite
      @ColonelSandersLite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I started the oils about a month ago after watching james wappel (you should check out his channel if you want to learn more about oils on minis) and I will tell you that, hands down, the oils are faster. Not a little faster either. They're a *lot* faster. At least for any paint job more nuanced than the ol' paint by numbers and dip.
      There is a learning curve but once you get over that, you get silky smooth blends with a minimum of effort. You do need to understand paint mixing and color wheel theory to get best results though.
      The only caveat is that the drying times are longer. That's an advantage in that it's precisely what allows you to do such effortless smooth blends, but it is a disadvantage when you actually need to let something dry before moving on. For the most part, I'll pretty much paint a whole mini from start to finish in the span of a couple of hours and let them sit on the shelf for a week or so to make 100% sure they're fully dry before clear coating.

    Really great Vid, thank you for sharing!
    But Marco - What do you do after the model is panted?
    How long do you leave it to totally dry?
    Is this a display model only technique and not for gaming?
    How is the best way to varnish it if you do want to use it for gaming?
    ... Would really appreciate if you can advise what you do next
    Keep up the great Channel!

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a million! The model is completely dry in 24/48 hours depending on the layer of paint used. You don't need to varnish because oils harden in an extremely resistant and waterproof film (that's why we have so many centuries old paintings in museums 😉). I always use oils in my gaming models 😊. Check the oils playlist; I explain everything in those videos!

    Next, will try some of these techniques, and their application to OSL, on Tainted Grail's Menhirs!!! Thanks man, would have never tried this without your guidance!

    Wow this is on a whole other level than the edge highlighted space marines you see all the time on youtube (which are impressive in their own right!). Your choice and control of colors gives it a warm and vibrant Boris Vallejo feel.

    I started using oils (burnt umber, ivory black and I treated myself to violet winsor purple dioxazine. They are awesome. The capillary effect is mental. No coffee stains. Depending on the colour they are quite transparent. It's all your fault. hahaha

      I'm a pretty new painter as well and honestly I wonder if it wouldn't have been easier to start with oils, they just make more intuitive sense in a way. If nothing else you could at least get a black or dark brown color and try an oil wash instead of a regular acrylic wash. They really add depth to the models.

    Hey Marco! This video is awesome and I can't wait to try it on my next project. Quick question: You mention that you are applying the paint, and then pushing it with a clean, dry brush with no mineral spirits. Do you just use a new brush each time, or are you cleaning the brush with mineral spirits and drying it off in between? Is there any concern of leftover mineral spirits? Thanks for The video!

    Have you tried Maimeri Classico oil range?, and if so, would you recommend just buying primary tones+b/w? I've been using their polycolor acrylic range for a while and I quite like the result the give me, and giving that the are produced by the same company and the pigments are the same, it's a bonus, but I noticed the primary tones are marked as transparent, and I don't know if they would give me problems

    Marco... I never fail to learn new bits of technical knowledge watching you work. My creative brain loves you, but my wallet is starting to demand a restraining order, unless I can figure out how to get my colorblind self working purely in CMYK color mixing, before diving into yet another painting discipline...

    Marco, with you fantastic skills and knowledge you completely turned my world of miniature painting! I only recently joined your channel and catching up. I have already tried oil washes - and I am a true believer now. I am trying to compile and buy a 'starter set'. Could you list the colours you used painting this model, please?

    Marco can you talk about the tones and acrylics/oils you used for the skintone? I have trouble achieving subtle, realistic skin tones like you do. I generally work from a warm brown base (streaking grime over like a gulliman flesh) into an Abteilung basic flesh tone, then sunny skin and a bit of light flesh. It doesn’t come out as lifelike as yours always does! Thanks so much!

    I'm about to attempt using oil paints to add some shading to a large D&D blue dragon I'm working on right now and I admit it's daunting. But after watching this, even a hack like me can go for it, I think! Good show, Marco!

    Another question: how do you make your synthetic brushes last with oils? I find after one session my Royal and Langnickel are basically destroyed.

    Great Marco. Thank you. I use like a pallette for oils just a square flat piece of white ceramic, which is very cheap and easy to find and I think more simple to clean and use with oils. :-)

    Mr. Marco, When you are getting into the blending stage, do you find it easier to drag the lighter color into the darker color or the other way around? It's hard to tell your methods of blending with the speed and camera distance from the model on my android... Just curious as Im about to embark to the art store to get some oils and a little bigger model from the D&D line to experiment on before moving over to my 40k army. I've watched this three times now and am STOKED to give this a go.

    I just started painting minis with acrylic because that's what everyone said. So I can use both ? Acrylic for the main portions that require solid base colors and keeping the layer thin since oils are thick ? Then use oils for blends and stuff ?
    I am not sure if I should just switch over to oils completely?

    I mean, that is fantastic. I am just cleaning out and setting up a new look to my hobby room (the attic) and I am buying all the oils etc to give it a try.
    If I had a question...it would be how to paint the cylinders and curved oval shapes you find on space marines and eldar. The flat panels have always defeated me as I can't work out what part should be highlighted and how etc.
    Thanks for your videos sir, they are fantastic!

    Hi, before i start with oils i have a question that i never found on this or otherss videos, what is the finish of oils? Matt, satin or gloss? And do they cover in 1 coat? Since acrilic use 2 or 3 coats for some colors, even my scale75 artist paint usually without dilution (just humidity of wet pallet) can't cover in 1 coat except if really heavy

    Love your videos! You're the reason I have added oils to my tool box, thanks for that.
    One issue I'm running into is (not sure how to explain this) "oil on oil". Basically I put down an acrylic base then oil wash on top of that. Then I add a different color on to that but I don't want to really disturb the wash later below. How do I avoid that?

    I have a question... When I use oil paints, my model ends up a bit on the glossy side. What would you use to bring the gloss down without affecting the vribrancy of the color too much?

    Hi, how do you know which colours to basecoat with (in this case Contrast) paint first? E.g. here you do yellow and red, but not a skin colour. In other videos I think you mentioned you only did dark colours?

    Wow just wow! I usually don't use oil paints or enamels because of the smell and strong odor. @Marco Are these types of oil paints strong in odor? I haven't used these artist grade ones. I have problems with the fumes from thinners and enamel (testors) paint and the panel linning ones for gundams they hurt my throat and head after a while and that's even with ventilation. I would hate to have to use a respirator for hours while painting. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated it.
