    Lyrics:
Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
He sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
    Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
He sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,
you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
    Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred,
Up rode the troopers, one, two, three,
With the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
    Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
With the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, you scoundrel with me.
Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong,
You'll never catch me alive, said he,
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,
you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
    Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
Oh, you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
Slim Dusty, AO MBE (born David Gordon Kirkpatrick; 13 June 1927 - 19 September 2003) was an Australian country music singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer. He was an Australian cultural icon and one of the country's most awarded stars, with a career spanning nearly seven decades and numerous recordings. He was known to record songs in the legacy of Australia, particularly of bush life and renowned Australian bush poets Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson that represented the lifestyle. The music genre was coined the "bush ballad", a style first made popular by Buddy Williams, the first artist to perform the genre in Australia, and also for his many trucking songs. Dusty was the first Australian to have a No. 1 international hit song, with a version of Gordon Parsons' "A Pub with No Beer". He received an unequalled 37 Golden Guitar and two Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and the Country Music Roll of Renown.

I’m 79 yrs old and have lived in Oz since I was 4. My parents were Hungarian and were refugees from WW2 and arrived here in 1949. As a kid I just wanted to be like all the other kids and become fully Aussie as quickly as possible. I’m about as Aussie as you can get ….i was bitten by a snake when I was 10: and can play a didgeridoo. I love Australia and reckon it’s the best country in the world and of course I love Waltzing Matilda. For those who don’t know a swagman is a homeless person who carries his bedroll (swag) over his shoulder. Matilda is the nickname for his bedroll (swag) and carrying it all day is “waltzing” his Matilda.

My grandpa sang me this song when I was a kid. He had been a sailor in US Merchant Marine in WWII and learned the song from some Aussie Diggers he had befriended in the Southwest Pacific in 1945. He grew up in Arizona and said the Aussies reminded him of people back home, so he got on with them quite well in Borneo.

A little known fact: This tune was adopted as the USMC's 1st Marine Division March. After It's campaign in the Solomon Islands in 1942, the division, was redeployed to Australia for a well deserved rest and refit. Australia welcomed them with open arms and at the time were seen as the saviors of the nation. The division adopted this folk song as a tribute.

At every roadblock they’d ask her what country she was from, and she didn’t lie. Her Australian accent made them all think she was saying Austrian and they let her through. Except that LAST checkpoint: the soldier there had experience with Aussies and arrested her. She was in for two years.

I only recently just found out the song's true meaning. This song was played over and over again in Primary school music class, and none of us knew the man had killed himself in the end. I always just assumed he died of age eventually and haunted the area afterward.

It's an allegory of the consequences of unfettered power and greed. Something that stirs the heart of every Australian. The country of the fair go for all.

@@jamescrab4110 Your literal interpretation of the song is how you see it. Please consult your dictionary for the meaning of allegory which is the key to my interpretation. Both interpretations are valid.Mine is more poetic while your's is bound up in dry legalise. The true question is why this song has remained in the popular mind for so long and it is because it is a warning of the outcome of a corrupt political system and a price paid whether you go along with that system or fight against it.Of course this has nothing to do with the current political system of coercion and control and the demolition of our freedoms, ''for the common good''. I will now stand down from my soap box and resume ''normal'' activities. Cheers.

    Definitions and explanation of terms:
Swagman: An itinerant worker who walked around from place to place carrying his belongings with him (his swag). Most were genuinely looking for steady work while a few were lazy tramps who wanted to do the minimum work for the maximum pay.
Billabong: A branch of a stream which has been cut off by the water flow changing direction. Larger versions are also known as an oxbow lake.
Coolibah/Coolabah tree: A variety of eucalyptus tree.
Billy: A tin pot used both to brew tea in and for general cooking.
Waltzing Matilda: The swagman's bed-roll was often carried at the hip and it swung back and forth as the man walked. It was nicknamed "Matilda" since it was the "only woman he slept with". The swinging motions recalled a lively waltz, hence to walk around while carrying your bedroll was "waltzing Matilda". The question "who'll come a-walzing Matilda with me" invokes the concept of being lonely and craving companionship.
Jumbuk: A young, male sheep. Aka a ram.
Tucker-bag: Tucker is food, so it's a food bag.
Squatter: In this context, a farmer who occupied crown land with the approval of the government in order to farm the land and develop and improve it.
Thoroughbred: A thoroughbred horse was expensive, indicating that the squatter was wealthy and could easily have afforded to lose a single sheep.
Trooper: A soldier. Filled the role of the police before the police force was established. The fact that the squatter brought three of them to catch a single thief indicates heavy-handedness in applying the law.
Prisons at the time were very nasty and very rough. Many people would have thought death to be an acceptable alternative.
Some might ask what alternatives did the squatter have to calling in the troopers? One possible alternative would have been to offer the swagman a job, docking his wages by a percentage until the cost of the sheep was paid for. Most swagmen would have jumped at that chance since they only resorted to theft in order to stay alive.

When I first heard this song ‘Waltzing Matilda’ many years ago, I thought it was the Australian national anthem. Yes, friends, quite frankly: for me it is the real national anthem of Australia. Why? Because you hear this song all over the continent; and certainly much more often than 'Advance Australia Fair'.
And Slim Dusty: EXCELLENT! AS HE ALWAYS WAS.

My late grandfather looked like Slim and from what I know of Slim, my Grandfather was just great at his job as grandfathering me. Saturday night roast lamb and veggies - then Sunday a drive in his FJ with sandwiches made from the roast. Magical moments from early'60's till his early passing in 1976. And we jammed - him with his banjo and I with a guitar. We were hopeless but we enjoyed it. He taught me to be a Grandfather which I try to duplicate.

I knew this song from my own time as a kid , but found Slim,s video here on youtube , so played it & joined in at the top of my voice , forgetting that the property across the road had been sold to a young ( & nice ) couple , as the vid finished I realised I had left the bloody door wide open & the whole lane heard me giving it full blast at Waltzing Matilda , this was a sunset & nobody said anything . I thought that was it & I,d got away with it , but some time later the young couple had a little baby , the guy, quite rightly very proudly , cornered me & told me with some considerable sense of great occasion their little daughter,s chosen name ; Matilda ! Slim mate , you helped name a little kid in central england , from beyond . Respect .
