After exploring numerous videos, I've finally grasped the concept of being target-focused, thanks to your clear explanation. I greatly appreciate your guidance.
Thanks for the clear and concise explanation about shooting with a red dot. Just recently got a red dot for my 365XL and will be taking it to the range today for the first time. You video made the process so much easier to understand. Just subscribed.
Lifetime iron sight shooter here. I have trained myself to look at the front sight, and blur the target. After 20 years of marksmanship training, I’ve only now just figured out that shooting with optics requires a different sight picture.
I have finally gotten my first red dot and I am going back to watch your red dot training series. I have come to trust your techniques and will be relying on your videos to help me with this transition after decades of shooting irons.
Got into an argument with a guy who worked at my range. He wanted to show off his block II M4 clone (which was slick, DD RIS II, Steiner Dbal, EOTECH), but he tried to tell me I was aiming wrong because I focus on the target with both eyes open. He believed you should focus on the dot of the optic like you do with the front sight of irons. This guy works at a range/store, and is potentially telling new shooters what to do and they’ll believe him because he’s got a kick ass AR. I had to look for videos like this to reconfirm to myself that I was doing it right, because hey, I’m nobody and he works at a gun range right? But I was right, and now I’m kinda pissed I almost let him convince me I was wrong. Thanks for your video man. It occurred to me that there aren’t many videos actually going over proper aiming procedure for red dots. And hey, if I misunderstood something about this then somebody tell me, but I think it’s good info.
Is this the same for rifle? I can't tell if I'm target or dot focused. I see guys cover their pistol optics with tape just wondered if it's counter productive on a rifle platform.
When you look through your front and rear sights lined up perfect should the dot be centered? I find that my dot is not centered it is to the right. So aiming with my red dot would be completely different than aiming with my iron sights. Any info is appreciated
Consider the iron sights and the red dot sight as completely separate ways of aiming the pistol. If they did co-witness it would be distracting to have four objects in our vision (target, red dot, front and rear sight) and would limit the advantage offered by the target focus of the red dot. During the aiming process you should only see the target with the dot superimposed on the target. If the dot failed then the iron sights would be a back up. Thanks for the question and watching!
I shot with a friends red dot once on an AR platform. Looking at the target instead of the front sight would definitely take some training to get used to.
I never liked focusing on the front sight. If someone's trying to kill me, I don't want to see two of 'em. Threat focus just always made more sense to me.
You are correct. My statement 4:25 is both eyes will fill in the image of the red dot in regards to stereoscopic vision. Two separate channels with overlapping information and your brains best guess at what the two images become when merged, although I can understand how it could be misconstrued. I will be clearer in the future. Thanks for watching!
I "think" I am target focused..... I need to get to the range find out for sure. 🤔🤷🏻♂️ Good stuff Brian! Thanks for taking the time to share it with us. Keep yourself safe! Randy

Good instruction
Just trying optics after 40 years. Big change. I appreciate this help in this slow change.
Great info. Brief and to the point.
You was very helpful, Thank You..👍🏽

Great tips on a good drill to help us practice! Thank you!

One correction, both eyes don’t see the red dot. Only the dominant eye will see the red dot. Which is great for cross eyed dominant shooters like me.
