  • The doped Jesus Manzano was the cyclist who, by confessing his doping in 2004 in exchange for money in a Spanish newspaper, was able to uncover the Operación Puerto in which we saw how athletes like Jan Ullrich, Alejandro Valverde, Joseba Beloki or Ivan Basso, all of Lance Armstrong's rival cyclists in the EPOca, were totally doped up to the eyebrows. However, 20 years later he wanted to give his opinion on cycling today and monsters like Wout Van Aert Fall, Mathieu Van der Poel Tour of Flanders 2024, Tadej Pogacar or Jonas Vingegaard 2024. Manzano exposes them all.

    Manzano's words are Manzano's words. It does not mean that we agree, since we are in favor of clean cycling and it is EVIDENT that we are in the cleanest moment of cycling, without doping positives and with that great increase in the level of genetics, nutrition and materials, not to mention marginal gains.

    Brilliant. As always you nail the "mentalidad" of various people here in Spain. I was a former Sports Journo in Ireland and live in the Poblenou district of Barcelona. Never have I experienced such a culture at ease with doping (esp in cycling) look at the recent bike race in Valencia when the testers showed up only 36 decided to finish, that gives you an idea of how deep it goes. My journalism was aimed at triathlon and a certain group of people had it out for me after an article that was about to be published (never was) so it shows you certain athletes, coaches, teams can still reach in and omerta those that speak out, like Manzano, whom I feel for. Amazing how in other countries some are rehabilitated (Miller) and yet go further south and you're ostracised completely (Italy/Spain)

Post General Franco Spains fragile ego has sought refuge in its sporting successes - successes gained at any cost. It’s national identity entwined with sporting success. The thing is, among professional sports, cycling is still relatively minor in regard to the money involved. So it's no real threat in the big picture to all the monied interests for cycling to be exposed for doping. Runners, baseball players, weight lifters, and bodybuilders are also exposed for doping fairly often - they are also relatively minor sports in terms of revenue generated. You'll note that American football and basketball are hardly ever exposed for doping, even though football players are much heavier than their counterparts 50 or more years ago (anabolic steroids?), and basketball players are freakishly tall and muscular compared to half a century ago. That is because football and basketball generate a lot of wealth for their owners and backers, and the gambling industry is only interested in winning, regardless of PED's needed to produce the wins. Yes, cycling has a history of doping, but it isn't unique among professional sports in that regard. It's just an easier target for prosecution than the more monied sports. And I personally think the current generation of cyclists are also doing PED's, albeit in a more sophisticated manner than 20+ years ago. Nutrition and training methods have also advanced considerably. How else are such young cyclists winning grand tours?

I believe that unions play a huge role in keeping a lid on doping in major league sports (which is a good thing), and the reasons for major doping scandals in cycling in the past has a lot to do with lack of funding (i.e. salaries) and loose lips. I'm sorry, I don't have time to elaborate right now, but I find this topic fascinating. I'll try to explain later.

    Lets get real here. The speed is not increased in todays cycling on climbing - which is where EPO and bloodboosters are the main factor. The 2 guys pogacar and vingegaard who are a level above everyone else are still far behind the records that matter made between 1991-2006 ish. If they were popping EPO and pills like back then that simply wouldnt be the case, very likely pogacar and Vingegaard are greater talents than anyone in the 90s and are built better for climbing the sport is way bigger today has much bigger talent pool, and still the best of the best are far behind the 90s. They are still 1-2 minutes slower on the big climbs which is a massive difference. The gains are done on flat road. Now todays bikes are significantly more aero than they were and since 90% of the effort on flat goes to fight the wind, it is no miracle that they do a higher average speed today. But they are still significantly slower when it goes up. People can make fun of aero and marginal gains. But they matter more than doping can do on a flat course. For evidence we have Graham Obree an amateur beating the hour record with inventive aero positions, and self engineered bikes. While the classical Hour record with a 1970's bikes still are around the same mark as Eddy mercks did but in the record with new aero bikes allowed they are able to do an average of 5, 6 or even 7 km/h faster with the same effort exerted. You cannot dope for that much speed. Aero is way more important. So the only place races are faster is on the flat parts. Very very few records are broken on the known climbs used in the 90's and if so it is because the record hasnt been contested much at that time. Aero doesnt matter when it goes up or it matters very little. There it is weight that matters. And the weight hasnt changed except perhaps a little heavier than in the 90s But here we are talking grams not kgs.
    So what to expect, it would be very very odd if the speed records on stages werent beaten given that both the stage lengths has been reduced in cycling in general + the bikes are simply faster on the flat and downhill and not just a little, quite a lot.
    Im still waiting for a doping scandal for the last 8-10 years. Other than the very minimal things like 1 rider using tremadol - not increasing performance really, or a clenbutarol beef really a substance of minimal effect and its still 12 years since we heard that one. Or any doping programs exposed or anything like that. in the 90s we knew, a whole team got busted in 1998. It only took 3 years from armstrong to end his career to him being exposed with a lot of evidence. Pantani got exposed mid career, The other 90's stars all admitted use or were exposed within 10 years of their high performances.
    A few riders have walked away with their name semi intact when we really know they were dopers, 1 of them is Indurain, but he quit before the talk of doping really went public he dodged the bullet.
    If you go bakc and see interviews of riders in general getting questioned about EPO or doping in the 90s or 00s and watch their responses, and then see the riders today respond to doping questions, its night and day. You cant say much from just 1 rider on this but when you see the whole bunch of the 90s riders dodge the questions, or become annoyed or get aggressive. Compared to today where they dont really seem to mind much getting asked on a general level among riders. Its clear the sport has changed significantly.

      Hmm that’s interesting but also there are another factors
      For example, how many of that climbs were climbed by actual cyclists and in what ways?
      Tourmalet, the most mythical, record down in 2023
      Joux Plane wasn’t record for tactics and for motorbikes in the scene (but they beat the Funny Padun one)

    • @cyclinghighlights
      @cyclinghighlights  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Also, Indurain is protected because it’s Spaniard. Manzano confessed by vengeance but in Spain doping isn’t important for people, fans only want to win and whenever they lose others were doped but never they. They’re protected by politicians and big fortunes.
      For example, they fired Olano from Vuelta España organization for positive in retroactive controls but they hired Escartin, another Ferrari client. Rafa Nadal with his TUE is a demigod and Indurain has the same status.

    • @cyclinghighlights
      @cyclinghighlights  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Finally, it’s obvious that people learn a lot about cases in the 90s (and remember that all of them appear only for venegance reasons, Festina Affair for Guimard, Lance USADA for Landis and taxes, Pantani for Mafia, Contador clembuterol for Lance/Vinokourov, all the big ones caught could be exposed but now they know how to make it, like in the 80s. That might also be a reason why it is so easy to be a very good cyclist coming from other sports and you will get your fresh "base values" tested after years of PED. Even if you take steroids etc. at younger age it will forever change your performance (and of course it can do enormous damage to your organs). I don't think sports with that much money in it will ever be clean. I think the current level of doping in professional cycling is alright though. People are monitored more closely to keep the risk in check and the races are fun to watch. Unfortunately it will stay impossible for clean athletes to compete.

And the nutrition has got a lot better, they are now rigorously in training and racing consuming 120g carbs/h, they were maybe doing 30g carbs/h 5-10 years ago that’s why there was another big jump in the last few years, the benefit especially for the recovery from better nutrition can’t be understated . Of course that doesn’t mean that everyone is clean, because they do also catch people from time to time. But what did Jonas do on the Col de la Loze? 6 W/kg for 47min or so? just wondering why Lemond hasn't charged after today's cyclists like he did Armstrong, I felt like that guy was literally bitching about Lance every day, every chance he got, all these dudes today are having similar results, ridiculous numbers, even so obvious they're charging out and winning stages by themselves with 80km to go...where are you Greg? Are you fine with it because they're not Americans and don't put your "legacy" in danger? What happens if Sepp Kuss starts having results, is he the next Lemond victim? Maybe it's just that every single rider is clean these days and are having all these superhuman phenomenal results completely naturally, yeah, maybe that's it!!!!!1111 /facepalm

      I think that having coincided both in time, one when he was already without EPO and out of the game and the other inside the game and with EPO and having more fame, fortune.... However, I see that LeMond puts a lot of emphasis on what many have resented about Lance and what he has really fallen for, his bully alpha male position. I don't like Lance, but you have to admit the guy is a shark and he has his good stuff too to hate him so much.

      You may not have seen some of Greg’s recent interviews here on TH-cam. He clearly thinks many are mechanical doping like a motor built in to the bike. Chris Frome, Cancelara etc he thinks they are doing this.

    *all pro sports* use PEDs to some degree. The human body is an amazing machine which still requires HARD WORK to perform at its peak. HOWEVER…it has its limit and then…in the words of famous Eric Clapton, “when the day is done and you want to ride on…COCAINE.”
    Specifically cycling: 3000+kms in 21 days, thousands of meters in elevation gain at Peloton race pace. = LOTS O FUEL ⛽️ ADDITIVES.
    I love the sport regardless….but c’mon….700+ watts for more than 20mins to finish a SOLO win at Strade Bianci this year…clean 🧼??? Nope. It’s ALL DOPED UP.

      Very few realize that doping has never stopped in cycling and I am convinced they are doped now more than ever. I spent a night with Floyd Landis back when Team Sky was dominating and I was convinced Sky was doped and Floyd agreed. He said "nothing has changed" It is the same as it was when he was cycling. He then said if I knew my efforts of exposing doping would accomplish nothing in stopping it, I may not have come out. He then said in exasperation, they should let them all do what they want (meaning just let them dope). I love your work by the way and watch all of your videos@@cyclinghighlights
