  • The Georgia Aquarium is a place where you can swim with Whale Sharks. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean. Some up to 40 feet long. And you can go swimming and or scuba diving with these gentle giants. Check out this story from Florida-TV and see the fun your missing.

    Don’t really understand the angry comments over them storing whale sharks, the aquarium bought them from a kill quota in Asia...meaning if they didn’t take them in and try to care for them, they’d just be on someone’s dinner plate

      Many people don't realise how endangered some of the species they keep at this aquarium actually are. Sure, it's best if these animals could just be left alone out in the wild but the sad reality is they aren't safe there. At the aquarium in Okinawa they are hoping to breed whale sharks f.ex not just to study their reproductive behaviour (which we know very little about) but also for the sake of preservation. If we can successfully breed endangered animals in captivity that at least gives us a chance at preventing them from going extinct.
      F.ex the Georgia Aquarium keeps the bowmouth guitarfish, a species of shark ray, which is currently listed as critically endangered in most of its natural habitats. The Georgia Aquarium is one of the few aquariums that are trying to breed them. It's not just to give people something to gawk at, it's to save the species from extinction.

      I went last year in February. I actually asked the volunteers who constantly train and study the marine life at the aquarium. I asked that same question, they told me that as for the whale sharks. They did not view any behavior that they are mating yet but they hope they will. The mantas have possible mated and have had offspring. Unfortunately the marine life within the tank have eaten the mantas offspring and any other animal that mated and produced.

    This sounds more like a commercial than a report. How long do the whale sharks really live in captivity?

    • @Theme-Park-Kingdom
      @Theme-Park-Kingdom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      We don't know because we haven't had them in aquariums for long enough.
      It's probably worth mentioning that Georgia Aquarium is non profit and these creatures would have been eaten as part of the fishing quota had they not been purchased by the aquarium.

    These sharks usually migrate across open ocean. They're also an endangered species now and have very short lifespans in captivity. Please support responsible eco-tours that allow you to see these animals in the wild instead :)! It not only keeps them wild but also contributes to the economy of many small islands whose only other source of income would be shark finning and fishing.

    • @SK-sq5bk
      @SK-sq5bk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      you know this aqurium rescued the sharks from fishermen right?
      these endangerd speces would be sea food if they wern't rescued.
      and they spent most of their life in the aqurium so they cant be released into the wild.

    • @nataliekparra
      @nataliekparra 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SK-sq5bk So instead of releasing them after rescue, so they could continue to contribute to wild populations, they flew them across the world to profit off of...? I've been to Taiji, Japan and heard aquariums purchasing dolphins from the hunts make the same "rescue" claim. Please don't buy into the greenwashing.

    • @SK-sq5bk
      @SK-sq5bk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nataliekparra they do contrubute to the populations in the wild.
      they had to rescue them since they were injurd so they had to treat them. they have been in captivity for so long they cant be released into the wild.
      also they have only ever had 2 wild caught crustations. evrything else in the aqurium is eather captive breed or wild caught
