Spear Guns for Home Defense?

  • Home defense is important for many people. Those who live in the US have the advantage that they can easily obtain firearms for the purpose, but in most other countries that is a not an option, due to strict weapon laws.
Spear guns are usually seen as a sports instrument rather than a weapon, and therefore they are legal even in some of the most restrictive countries. Well, what can kill a fish can probably also be effective against human intruders - so spear guns might be a viable option for self defense.
This video is a (non sponsored) review about two different models, both about 50 cm long. Both are made by Cressi, one of the leading manufacturers. One model is powered by rubber, the other one by compressed air.
How will these devices perform against an archery mat and ballistic gelatin? What is the effective range? Can they be "souped up" for more power?
    This video has the answers.
    A "The Slingshot Channel" production.

March 13, 2019, two students entered a school in São Paulo, Brasil, with a revolver and a crossbow, machetes and throwing knives. They killed 10 peole, all with the gun, bought ilegally with the numbers ground out. One of them was 17, the other 25 years old, minimum legal age to buy a gun. But the media is bitching about the fact that "crossbows can be bought from the internet by anyone". They didn't care much for the fact that one of those kids was raised by his grandma, had no father and a drug addict mother, and was been bullied spitless in the school. I don't know about the other, didn't pay much attention to that actually, i have more important stuff to do. But yes, if you write a hate message on a wall, they want to ban spray cans. health and safety laws are pretty over-zealous, but i think it's wise to have restrictions on firearms. anything else is pretty fair game though; slingshots, crossbows, catapults, scimitars, battleaxes, i think the line should be if it's non-concealable, and requires a certain amount of skill and ability to use (such as the strength needed to cock a spear gun), since firearms are pretty easy to accidentally kill someone with.

Passing gun control and anti-gun laws because of gun accidents or even crime is like banning vaccines because you don't like the sting of the needle. Guns are used to PREVENT crime almost infinitely more than they are used in crime, not counting the innumerable other peaceful uses of guns.

i'd like a source for that, and really there should be no accidents at all, but in any case it's not just about the accidents, it would make intentional deaths much less common also, it's a lot harder to use other means of weaponry to kill someone than it is to just shoot them with a gun. i didn't say anything about bans, i said restrictions are wise, the US is much too liberal with their gun control. for guns at least i would say Germany is very fair with it's gun laws, it allows people to have basically whatever they want, but doesn't lack safety protocol like the US.

LMAO Joerg YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUMP IT UP TO RELOAD IT WTF!!!!
The air does not escape when you fire it. When you put the spear in, it pushes back a piston which moves forward again when you shoot it. The air slowly leaks out over a very long time, you can fire it hundreds of times without having to pump it.
I'm worried that you overpressurized that speargun, I can't imagine the pressure in there when you pumped it up when it was fully pumped from the beginning.

I actually use LEGO bricks as home defense. I have them placed around my home, and only I and other residents of my home know where they are. I've installed X-Acto blades and other sharp spikes into them to provide a bit of puncturing power if the intruder wears boots or shoes. Without the blades or spikes, LEGO bricks are still powerful items for home defense, but they don't just get the job done without them.

    Mr. Sprave,
The compressed air speargun you used is sealed, in other words it does not loose air pressure when shot. It works by compressing a piston when the spear shaft is loaded. These type of speargun usually ship pressurized from the factory and I think that's why it was difficult for you to pressurize again using the hand pump. I think that you may have doubled the safe working pressure of the speargun. This is a very dangerous situation and I recommend purging all the pressure out of the speargun and pressurizing it again to the manufacturers specifications. I own these types of spearguns and I use the pump maybe once a year as some air may seep out due to heavy use and old seals.

    • @Slingshotchannel

No offense Joerg, but it's quite dangerous to condone warning shots, both legally and "tactically".
    Legally--
1.) In many countries/states, firing a weapon as a threat is illegal unless you are in direct fear for your life. Your ability and decision to fire a warning shot can legally put this direct fear in question. In the US, classes teach not to use your weapon unless you mean to kill, because anything less does not require it and will become increasingly more difficult to defend in a court of law. That's not something you want trouble defending. Everyone should know their local laws and learn what they mean in practical situations.
2.) It's difficult or impossible for many people to fire a warning shot in a safe direction in their living situation. You are legally and morally responsible for the warning bullet you put into the baby's crib down the street, or shot in the air and landed in someone's yard.
    Tactically--
You've now missed on purpose, and Johnny-meths-a-lot might just start shooting with HIS gun. Now you're in a gunfight, maybe with your family in the house on top of it. You've also wasted ammunition, which is catastrophic in a weapon that has low capacity. If you use 1 out of your 2 shots to warn someone trying to hurt or kill you, you're in for a very bad time. You should ALWYAS have a flashlight to ID the person, and know whether it's the drunk college kid walking into the wrong house, or Johny-meths-a-lot with a .45 in his hand. Option A. doesn't get shot at all, while option B. doesn't get a warning shot at all.

Hello there ! İ am a big fun of slingshots and catapults and watched all of your videos, told my friends about your channel too:) so as i can see you are very open to your subscribers demends and ideas; so i've came up with and idea. My idea for you to test is a slingshot that shots a second slingshot which is preloaded that releases its load at end of the first slingshots muzzle when it is at its highest speed by a mechanism which i am sure you'll figure out how, in order for the second slingshot to shoot correctly the 2nd slingshot should be going in some sort of rail mounted on the largest slingshot. İ am sure that it'll be interesting to see on slow motion a slingshot shot by an other larger one reaching these high speeds and also shooting maybe a marble or bb, and theoreticaly since the small slingshot will already be at a high speed right before it shoots its load the acutal shot of the bb from the 2nd slingshot would be super fast and powerful ! Looking forward to see it!:)

pneumatic doesn't require pumping after every shot, it doesn't lose pressure when you shoot. The air inside does not escape. The pump is for times when you bleed air out of the back valve for a lower pressure or maintanance (changing worn out o rings) which is about maybe once every other year. On the other hand you will wear out the o rings very quickly if you shoot it out of the water. There are some pneumatics that are designed to shoot out of water but they are very rare like the mares bazooka.

1:44 It has no fletching because its meant to travel THROUGH WATER, not air. Fletching would be a major source of drag for a projectile in water: the water flow along the shaft stabilizes the projectile - no fletching needed.
6:00 You could add one of the CO2 canisters with a valve to the gas operated one. Open a valve, equalize pressure, close the valve, load the spear, a helluva lot faster than manually pumping the damn thing.

My friend, I really appreciate this video. Everyone has the natural right to defend their home and their family. The spear gun is a good option to be honest. It will certainly stop an intruder, and may have the advantage of being less lethal (thereby shielding the defender from prosecution). Only problem is it takes a while to reload, so your first shot has to count. I just hope that the megalomaniacs in government don't get the idea to now ban spear guns in your country.
As an American I will say that the ability to defend your home and family is a consequence of the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. However, that is not the primary purpose of that amendment. Really, it is to hold the government always at the risk of revolution if it tramples on the natural rights of the people.

    Hi Joerg,
I am hunting with a spear guns for many years and I also prefer the one with rubbers :) , but I'm pretty sure that you are able to reuse the air gun without repumping it again, it would be useless for spear fishing! I'm sure you already realised that! :)
Also you can use additional single rubber (use the hole on the tip of the gun and load it to the second slot available on the spear). That way you have much more power, because you are loading each rubber separately. I would like to see the penetration difference! :)

(Black powder is a bit of a problem here in Germany but I think there are kind of pressed together cartridge for muzzle loaders you could own without a permit / license - to own open black powder legally you´ll need a permit for explosives which should be atainable as long as you have a clean criminal record...)
If I recall it right you even could carry a muzzle loader openly here but not 100% sure (if the design is from before 187something at least) (also does not apply for multi shot weapons like percussion revolvers, that´s a gun as much as a new one legally - not quite sure about multi barrel stuff...)

Actually the pneumatic gun is the best option by far - but only if you know how to properly load and use it.... You don't ever really need to pump it unless its leaking. It should hold the pressure after every shot. Leaving a rubber gun loaded for a very long time - weakens and breaks the rubbers. Do the same with a pneumatic and nothing gets damaged - even if left loaded for a year. Also when not is use - Rubber bands need to be removed and frozen in order to prevent deterioration. Pneumatic is by far the most reliable, dependable, powerful, has the heaviest gauge spear (=MORE MOMENTUM), easiest and safest to load without any risk of hurting your own fingers or breaking of bands or gun muzzle while loading (which could be fatal to user if loaded out of the water) plus a thousand other advantages. And by the way... the spear end on a pneumatic is not airtight. It's the piston inside the barrel that's airtight. The thick washer at the end is to prevent the spear scratching the internal bore, which would result in a leak, by centering the spear in the muzzle.

I do spearfishing allot and have to say:
    1) You don't have to pump pneumatic gun after each shoot, but shooting it out of the water is definitely damaging the gun.
2)There is much better ways to do sling speargun stronger:
a)There is special hole in front of the "barrel", throw that hole you can add another sling.
b)Existing sling can be made shorter, or replaced buy more powerful sling (20 mm sling)

Joerg the hole at the muzzle end is to add another round band for added power. So the other notch on the shaft is for the second band. That's why there's two notches on the shaft. The wishbone that hooks to the shaft from the rubber band doesn't need to be metal. We here in Hawaii don't normally use metal wishbones because they are to loud under water. We use a strong cord of about 4 inches long with a knot tied at each end. Push the knot into the band far enough so you can tie a holding knot with something similar to dental floss but thicker and also waxed like dental floss. Tie about 15 to 20 knot to hold in place. Also can't wait to see what you have in store for the next video.Aloha, Nate.

Great reviews thank you. The air spear gun can fire more than one shot without needing to be pumped up again. Pumping it 200 times would give you enough in reserve to fire 3 decent shots. Each one a bit less powerful than the one before, but still very effective. I think one crucial thing with either gun as a home defense weapon, is to have a couple of extra spears for reloading.

  • @Deadlyaztec27

No Joerg you are wrong. When you pump it up you can shoot with it many times, not just one... otherwise even for the spearfishing it would be impossible to use it.
Second thing, you forgot to say an important thing. Outside of the water you MUST always remember to take off the cord attached from the gun to the aluminum bar otherwise the bar will come back to you after shooting. You did it of course but people may forget to do it or underestimate the issue.
And third, it's just a curious fact, the difference underwater between the two guns is that the one air compressed shoots faster but has a problem, it makes noise and it will cause the fish to go away even if they're meters away from you. The one rubber based is less powerful but it doesn't make any noise and fishes will not know that you are in the area.
By the way great video as usual, sorry for my english. Take care Joerg have a nice day!!!!

Jorge a pneumatic speargun loose its pressure after houndreds and houndreds of shots. Not each single one....the reason the pump was so hard (and the shot so powerfull) was the fact you pumped in other 200 Times and brought the full pressoure to double the recommended value (also a very risky thing).Once full pumped up the charge lasts for something like 40-50 shots and Only take a couple of pumps to get it back to full power

Well, as we learned from Demolition Ranch, speed is preferable to mass when it comes to penetration. Just get something flying fast enough, and it'll punch through anything. The space shuttle Columbia broke up after a bit of foam came off and hit it at hypersonic speeds. Frigging _foam._
Also, that spear lost all its accuracy because it's tailheavy. Things tend to fly straighter when they're noseheavy, which is why arrows are typically wood or aluminum with a steel head.

+frobie54 My findings are completely different. Speed and mass are equal in the equation for momentum. A train at 30 mph will destroy pretty much anything. Weld a spear at the front of it and there is NOTHING that spear would not penetrate, at that low speed. Of course fast AND heavy is best :)
These arrows aren't tail heavy. They are in fact a bit nose heavy due to the hooks, otherwise they are just straight rods.

Those spears are basically designed to be the ultimate penetrators, since they're meant to be fired underwater. From a physics standpoint, the spear is penetrating the water just like it is your archery mat, so to get good range, they have to optimize them for penetration. The energy behind the projectile matters much less than its geometry and density for penetration.

Hi in reference to the pneumatic spear gun being given 200 pumps every time he has fired it. I thought it was odd when a man his size would be exhausted after pumping it the gun up from 0 psi. This spear gun probably has a 1000 psi or more in it now which speaks volumes for the Cressi trigger mechanism and seals not being blown or the way to France. I stated several hours after the video was is posted n even posted the guns manual URL but no due diligence has been shown in retracting this dangerous misinformation.

+BrettsAustralia I answered to about one million similar comments, will put things right in the next vid. BTW if you insert urls into TH-cam comments, TH-cam's anti spam bots will automatically put your comment into the "Likely Spam" folder and nobody ever sees it.

it has a slot for 2.nd rubber band that is why your spare has 2 notches.

First of all great video but as an avid spear fisherman I will have to say some information was not correct.
example 1 the rubber band gun:
The large hole at the bottom of the muzzle is for attaching a secondary band for more power.
    example 2 the pneumatic speargun:
The air does not ever need to be refilled/pumped up unless it leaks out over time, basically the 200+ pumps you speak of only needs to be done once. However, the guns ship pre filled you actually don't need to do it. Unless of coarse you want to add more air to increase power :P. So the reload time of this is actually faster than the rubber powered gun because all that is needed is to drive the shaft in again and you are ready to shoot again.
All that being said owning anything for the purpose of self defense is sadly illegal in the over regulated place we call Australia.

+konklotzz I stand corrected. I have to say the instructions on the weapons were not obvious in that regard - but maybe I wasn't thorough enough. Also too bad you can't own a spear gun for self defense in Australia. But if you bought one for the next summer vacation and it just happens to be in reach?

    Hallo,

Actually, for compressed-air spearguns (if there are not leakages), it's not necessary to reload the internal pressure with the pump each time.
Once the pressure is set it will last for dozens of shots.
Still I'm a huge fun of arbaletes anyway :)
Also big fun of the channel, indeed :)

Joerg, be very careful using metal wishbones on spearguns. The wishbone is the part that connects the rubber to the spear. Metal wishbones give little to no warning when they are about to fail. When they fail they can cause serious injury, like ripping a finger off. It is much better to use corded wishbones made from Dyneema or another material. They visibly fray when starting to fail and are much less likely to cause injury.

i have the cressi air one with mine you dont have to pump it up everytime cause the air is compressed when you force the spear down the barrel . Ive pumped it once in 2 yrs.
