Yes, i was hoping that you would one day cover this episode Silver Quill! Common Ground is one of the greatest episodes of season 9, i mean sure it has it's ups and downs like all the episodes of the show do but i love that Patton Oswalt personally wrote the story for this episode and based it on his real life experiences involving his family! just as it was a joy to hear Patton portray Quibble Pants one last time. Patton's wife and daughter both did an outstanding job voicing Clear Sky and Wind Sprint! i was especially impressed that it was Mr. Oswalt's daughters first time ever doing voice acting and she freaking nailed it! But anyway i overall love this episode. the main theme of it is family, the guy who wrote it is an absolute legend and his family all did such masterful performances.
I’ve been waiting for this episode forever. Great vid silver. Personally I kinda like this episode but I didn’t know it was the family that acted in it.
Congratulations on getting this one out! Boy, you sure went the extra-mile with all the sports channel-like graphics! A very nice touch! One of the things that I think helps sell Common Ground is something it has in common with the very next episode, She's All Yak. In both cases, the idea of faking it 'til you make it comes from the character in question, Quibble Pants and Yona respectively. Had the idea originated with the members of the Mane Six involved, it would've been frustrating seeing them steer other characters down the wrong path with poor advice that they then ultimately pay the price for. In both cases, the idea came from others and Mane Six are simply doing their best to further the lackluster plan that someone else came up with. Rainbow even suggests to Quibble at the start, albeit with some sarcasm (likely because she knew how cliched it sounded) to just be himself and it was Quibble who rejected the idea out of hoof. That's the sort of thing that can make all the difference. Like you pointed out thought, the episode's early weirdness and wrong focus is off-putting. The tone Fluttershy takes when talking about Snails being too busy with autographs, or the look exchanged between the Ponyville and that other team--none of it goes anywhere so the focus given it is just bizarre. Also, yeah, expect a rant when you get to the tragically/ironically named 2, 4, 6 Greaaat, one of the worst episodes in the series. The Oswalt family were a delight. Patton gives Quibble so much energy and exuberance in his lines, even in failure, that it makes him utterly endearing. But then, this is the guy who made a rat in a kitchen cute and supportable so no shockers there. I'd cut Braeburn some slack though, especially since we have only Applejack's word in Buckball Season that he was doing any bragging and all and she was ... off-kilter, let's say, in her priorities that episode. So she wasn't a super-reliable narrator. Also, what is up with Applejack sticking Rainbow Dash with side-jobs when she goes on vacation that interfere with the whole reason she went on vacation? First with the Wild Blue Yonder in Las Pegasus and now with the Buckball tournament in Appleloosa? Either Applejack is super jealous and in need of a vacation herself or she is just a lousy planner. You make the call which. Finally, any explanation for all the doubles? Clones, time travel duplicates, alternate reality versions of yourself, or what? XD
Who knows why RD gets stuck with all the side jobs? As for Silver Quill himself, he has stated before that he's the Anti-Celestia, and thusly a demon. *(Levitates a gun)* Which is why I'm not taking any chances when I meet him. *(Loads a clip of holy bullets into my gun)*
I'd say that the more adult oriented episodes are a sign of the show growing with its audience. This is a smart move because it means the show runners recognize the kids who started watching the show when it came out are not little anymore and, if handled right, can understand the more grown up stuff.
I'd argue the question of whether the moral is aimed at children or adults is misguided. A story where both sides of the conflict are presented sympathetically is generally aimed at both sides, regardless of which one is better classified as the protagonist. Both stepparents and stepchildren can see themselves in this story, and both can see those they may be currently failing to connect with.
14:21 You leave Ross Beadman alone, he's a treasure! Also he was 5 when they shot Revenge of the Sith, Alice Oswalt was at least 8 or 9, when they recorded her dialogue for Common Ground. It's not a huge difference in years, but mentally it's a bit more significant. Also, good luck being 5 and being directed by George Lucas, even the adults struggle with that. Stuck in a room of green, walking to a mark, saying the line, and not understanding the gravity of what's taking place, versus reading the lines in an environment that while not very familiar is an understood necessity as you know the end product will look good because you wanted to voice a character in My Little Pony. Ross was supposed to just be an extra, wasn't even going to have dialogue, but then he ended up being picked because he was the only one paying attention in a room full of kids. And he hasn't acted since. I will give Alice this though, it is a lot more dialogue for her, and I'm sure that if there was supposed to be a kid in Star Wars with more lines, they'd have really sought after the right person than pretty much hoping for the best out of a bunch of random extras.
I've *YAY*ing missed your After the Fact series so much. I'm so stinking happy to see you back doing episodes like this, and really hope to see you doing more of these for both as of yet uncovered Gen 4 episodes and Gen 5 shorts specials etcetera. Hope you're feeling better btw, i remember reading a few days ago you were under the weather.
I honestly appreciated this episode because I've had problems accepted stepdads in my life. I take the time to understand what my dad likes and he sometimes takes the time to do the same with what I like.
I assume this is how "one" of the Legion (Silver Quills) ends up in Future!Equestria [G5]: . Time flows extremely slow in the Filly Funtasia´s Realm. -> By the time this Silver Quill manages to go through another reality tear, thousands of years had passed.
I really found it interesting when this episode came out that the whole Oswalt family was in it, and that it was a tribute to his own family situation. I thought that was really sweet.

Oh gosh, I had no idea how much I missed these skits until I watched this one. Pinkie Pie isn't the only one on top of her game, because you knocked it out of the park, sir. Thank you for you and your team's efforts.
My dad's parents divorced when he was a kid, but didn't remarry until he was a teenager. My step-grandparents were great people and my dad came to love them both and the families they brought with them. So for us, Step was just a word and to this day I'll still say I was blessed with 3 sets of grandparents. Now as for this episode myself, as much as I love the 'behind the scenes' story of this episode, the episode itself for me was pretty boring. I guess because I was never in a situation like that myself, it was hard to find it relatable and the moments of Squibble being 'cringy' were very hard to watch. I did like the ending though. Overall great review Silver and it's nice to see you back in the saddle.
I do feel bad for SilverQuill, he only got one scene of interviewing somepony before he was sucked into a space-time rift and sent to another dimension. SilverQuill also got a bit short-handed, having one scene touring the throne room before getting sent to prison. (although it was probably on the grounds of trespassing and stealing credit for creating the nightlight). Still, not as bad of a fate as SilverQuill. Meanwhile, SilverQuill and SilverQuill stayed in the HQ with AC for the entire runtime. And although SilverQuill gave a wonderful commentary throughout the runtime, SilverQuill stood at the desk mostly telling SilverQuill what to do. (Although turning into a dot was funny). I also want to give major props to SilverQuill for sticking by the main Buck-Ball arena and giving constant updates on the field, even if he ultimately missed the endgame and got called out by SilverQuill for it. Oh yeah, and it was also nice to see SpartaQuill again at the very end. (Jokes aside, great video all around! Keep up the good work! :) )
