Exactly. Someone at a desk seems to have put together the specs, but not thought through how to use it. I think the department that sells switches may have sabotaged it so they don't go out of business themselves, and then forgot to create the product they wanted to sell.
So as someone who thinks the UDM Pro Max is stupid I think this this is pretty awesome. I love the balance of this system and the fact it has all 2.5Gbps ports unlike the UDM Pro Max. One of the coolest things on this has to be the bay for the swappable SSD. Like Seriously. Why can't we get home servers with that. I know they have ruler SSDs but those are enterprise drives. This thing has a swappable bay for a consumer m.2 ssd in it.

This should've had all POE ports, would've been perfect for powering a few access points, even if 1 port was POE it would've been very compelling for a home user or small business. But since it doesn't, it offers nothing my self hosted controller, NAS with NVME cached storage and $25 ebay POE switch doesn't offer for my needs. Poe would have actually made me considee it with an AP for family upgrades from their crappy ISP wifi router.
I would love to see a "Max" version of the Unifi Express, I mean 2.5G ports AND Wi-Fi 6 or 7, would be incredible if they have Wi-Fi on the CG Max. For those who don't have a lot of space, I love to have my Unifi Express blending with the furniture providing Wi-Fi to my apartment, but I also have a NAS and computer with 2.5G and because of that I had to buy a Unifi XG (small and not ugly to help blend with the home).
For ANYONE looking to get the UCG Max or even the Ultra - BOTH items are suffering heavyyyyyy firmware issues right now. Like if you have a 1gbps/1gbps fiber speed? Expect to get half your speeds....for no reason at all. Some are claiming Unifi has been lying about the speeds from the ports or atleast prototype models were fine, mass production models have problems. I have 1g/1g fiber and if I have IPS *OFF*....I get 920 mbps down....120 mbps up. Im only getting 1/10th my upload speed. If its ON however, from the UCG to my Fiber modem - I get 1gb/1gb, but from a client to the UCG to my modem I am getting around 600-750 up and down. I thought it was me not doing something right, maybe some bad cables, until I did my google searching. So...buyers beware - they are having some firmware issues right now. I have hopes theyll have it fixed very soon but...they look like theyre taking their time on that.
i went with the UXG-Max since i already have a server running the unifi software elsewhere on the network, and i'm tentatively pleased! i haven't watched the video all the way through yet so you might have brought it up: the unifi lineup is missing a 2.5gbe switch between the USW-Flex-XG and the USW-Flex-Mini product. hopefully they'll release such a product soon, so i can upgrade the flex-minis scattered around my apartment :)
I actually really love this product. I think its the best way for a prosumer to get into 2.5g networking with Ubiquiti. My only gripe is the pricing of the SSD options and the fact that you need to buy the tray separately of the no SSD model.
It’s $80 more than the UDR with no AP or Poe. If they making it for a home or small business it comes up way short. What home doesn’t have/need WiFi?? To add a AP and Poe you sitting close to $400 or more. I’ve been looking to buy into UniFi I was thinking they would come out with a UDR max for $279.
2.5 G is not about 21st Century. It's more about needs and costs. If you have more than 1 Gb at home or connect your router and use NAS/storage or POE/Cameras when Max is the choice. Otherwise Ultra will do the job perfectly. Btw, Nvme is for camera recording, not for NAS like usage.
I am getting some Unifi gear to test with and this is a good price point for me even without the storage since I don't need it for cameras. The 2.5Gbps WAN ports are nice to have also.
2.5gb WAN/LAN but no lite/pro model switch to go with it for 2.5gb??? Am I missing something? Whats the point of 2.5gb if I can’t have my AP that supports 2.5gb PoE, switched in? Any way around this other than buying the $400 pro that has SFP+ which I would have to buy $70 connector just to plug into the gateway??
I was just looking at the Ultra, Max and Express for my parents house to manage their network remotely. The express comes with wifi built-in, which is great for the price. The max and ultra have no wifi or poe, which increases the buy-in cost. Unless you happen to have some spares laying around or something. The Dream Router is another choice, but capped at 700mb for the wan. :( For a small instance, the express is a clear win if you only need network. But will likely get overwhelmed depending on how many devices are active at once. The ultra will likely be my go too though, as I have a U6+ and I plan to upgrade to a U7 Pro. So I can purchase a PoE (ui or not) L2 switch and repurpose my AP. The Max is as you say a great way to get into a unifi stack but at a lower cost. I just wish it had one PoE port, as that would make the buy-in cost for prosumers that more lucrative.
I don't get it.. what's the point of 2.5Gbps ports if IDS/IPS throughput is 1.5Gbps? It will cap the networking speed. I'd consider buying this, but my home has 2Gbps internet speed, so I guess I'll have to stick with rack sized UDM Pro or SE. I'm unsure though if those are still a good buy in 2024, how long will they continue to support them..
Is it possible to connect a Synology DS1522+ to a Unifi Cloud Gateway Max via one of the Ethernet network ports to back up security images from the cameras?
i use The UniFi Security Gateway and cloudkey gen2 and a 8 port unifi poe switch with unifi lite wifi 6 and 2 cameres one poe and one on wifi been running for some years now
I think the most frustrating thing they are doing is that they won't make a dream machine with 2.5G ports. If you do any sort of file transfers on your home network, I think you will find the Gateway options lacking.
Question worth the $100 to go up to the dream machine for $379. I have frontier fiber with 2 gig service for home usage. Don’t plan on using the cameras as I have a different system for that.
I received mine three days ago. Happy with my no storage CGM. Overkill for me, but geeking out. Fiber connection and CGM, U6 Pro, two flex mini switches for now. I was going to order the U6 Mesh but out of stock. In stock now. Initially had issues with the U6 Pro setup, but it's solid now for the house. Can anyone tell me if I should be seeing lan traffic stats for devices wired to the CGM? That is the only thing I'm still trying to figure out lol. My IOT, Secure and core network VLANs are good.
the only thing that I don't like is my USW PRO 24 port is not POE dope! I have a U6-LR that could have used POE but I bought the injector, not a bad starter point.
1. 1.5 Gbps of throughput! It should be 2.5 Gbps! 2. No POE+, not even ONE port. Nobody wants to buy an extra adapter or switch just to add a Wifi Access Point. Big hard pass for me until they address those two issues.
it is 2.5 Gbps, but when you turn on IPS/IDS everything gets examined, which takes time. A faster CPU would get it closer to 2.5 Gbps, but thats more expensive, and then you have to have more cooling possibly, things like that. Generally, when you turn on IPS/IDS your network throughput takes a hit.
Just wait for the Cloud Gateway Max Ultra Plus SE, I'm sure they'll release it a couple months after your able to purchase this one and it will have half the features you want!
It has 2.5Gbps of throughput unless you turn on IPS/IDS. If you need that feature beyond 1.5Gbps then you probably need a more expensive product from Ubiquiti.
It looks promising but I think it is too early to buy this one. 2.5 Gbe network sounds nice, however, when you want to use a 2.5Gbe access point with POE on it.... you can't. It has no POE. You can inject POE but then you're back to 1 gigabit. You can buy a 2.5 or 10Gbe switch to put in between, which starts at double the cost of this device. Cheaper POE switches take you back to 1Gbe again.
I ll wait for the one without ssd, never see it in stock, i have samsung 2tb. 512gb alway in stock which is too small when you have 8 cameras running at 4k
