How Long Does a CHAINSAW CHAIN Last - When To REPLACE Chain

  • How long does a chainsaw chain last? Chainsaw chain life or when to replace a chainsaw chain is determined by the amount of material available, your chainsaw operation, and your ability to properly sharpen a chainsaw chain. The most expensive chainsaw operation comes from wasting and throwing away viable and usable chain unknowingly. When to sharpen a chainsaw.....When it's dull or not performing as intended. A cheap vs expensive chainsaw chain can or will be determined by your chainsaw practices but the best chainsaw for cutting firewood or any wood is a sharp chainsaw chain and I give a couple of things to think about and 1 or 2 chainsaw sharpening tips. So the answer to when to replace a chainsaw chain is when there's no more life left in it. This is also a response video to some good ole army hazing that I received from and old buddy to prove weather or not my little very used up chain can still provide value in my effort to cut firewood here on my little country homestead. Will I eat Crow or not?

    Hi I wish we had trees we could cut down here. But we will be looking for some dead trees I don't know if we would need a chainsaw for those though.

      I would think a small saw would be handy anyway. You may find yourself getting some big timbers that you need to get thru as well not to mention cut through some walls for a quick fire escape. LoL

    Forgot: if you're serious about cutting, get rid of that safety ( not really safe ) chain. A yellow link non safety chain will cut faster with the right skill and experience. Know how fast a femoral artery slice will bleed out ? JMNSHO

    I recently went through about 5-8 chains doing Brush Cleanup on a 720 foot fence. Took about 3-4 weeks and had 160 hours on the jobsite... I threw 2 chains and my dad threw more than I did but would changing chains everyday reduce downtime? Because I found myself and my dad spending most of that time just sharpening chains because they kept getting dull on the fence because we wanted to do a good job and cut it as close as we can... I may just stock up on 2 weeks of chains or so and change them everyday and just sharpen every 2 weeks... good idea or nah?

    Heather said you might need to get a tape measure. Your cutting your white oak firewood a little short..... Lol
    Also, you might want to show people how to cut a dirty log. so they will be less likely to damage the chain... just a thought...

      Well maybe I'm in the process of making some pavers to walk on....I bet she didn't think of that now did she?!? LoL Dirty log...I can just here it now with ppl asking what the heck does that mean...short answer...after felling the tree just brush off the bark with the embedded mud and rock with your gloves. Tell the little guy to start coming up with a cool video idea and I bet us hillbillies can make it happen. ;)

    So for a 14" bar on my stihl ms171. Every tank of gas I'm no longer getting chips I'm getting dust. Sharpen every tank? Is that a good rule of thumb?

    • @3basketliving
      @3basketliving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sharpening every tank sounds like a little much to me. If your getting dust then I'm thinking that your rakes / guides are too high. I hit my rakes about every other sharpening. Just my opinion.

    Appreciate you showing the limits for a saw chain good Sir. Getting the most out it safely will save most folks money but also reduce global warming via waste reduction which the leftists should be happy about :D Not sure why they give you a hard time ;-) Thanks for your content from Australia. So if your chain is sitting for two years while you were deployed, should you change it even though it's still sharp? I just don't want the thing flying off at me. Still got tension between the chain and saw? Any advice would be appreciated.

  • @Normanb15
    @Normanb15 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you were cutting daily for 2 hours, and not damaging by hitting steel or rock, sharpeninh once a week, how long will a chain last? I ask because I can get chains at half price now so I'm trying to figure how many to buy.

    • @3basketliving
      @3basketliving  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on how much cutting you're doing. Heads Up though!.....You can buy cheap chain from cheaper steel that will Stretch fairly easy and render that chain useless once you reach your saw tension adjustment limit. Keep that in mind.

    • @Normanb15
      @Normanb15 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@3basketliving they are Oregon speed cut chains. I use a Speed Cit bar. Right now i can get them close to half price so I'm trying to figure how many to buy. I'm thinking 6 or 7 chains.
