It would have been really cool if they did something similar to the remaster of Halo 2. It gave you the option to switch back and forth between the new and old graphics and music.
I feel like the changes to the music and character design would only annoy those who played the original, people like me who never played the original demon's souls (or in my case, this being my first souls) would end up liking the new music and design.
I think if Sony were to add this they wouldn't do it right away. The redone music cost a pretty penny and they need to present the game as a system seller. The old one while definitely better at capturing the atmosphere in many spots doesn't scream "wow", especially to new players.
@@NinjaMaster-og8ti Well that's to be expected with remakes that make any noticeable changes to the og game. But yeah, I do believe if this was a new Fromsoft release, nobody would be complaining about the music or art design. Also, when considering that the comparisons many people make are so overblown, I feel like a lot also has to do with just how used people are to the og game and it's art design and music, which causes any noticeable change to be unfitting for the game to them.
@@limonbattery That's a fair argument. Also, it seems to be very subjective whether the new or the old music pieces capture the atmosphere of the context they are played in better, and they probably found the music they created to fit the game just as well. I guess they should have expected some people preferring the og soundtrack though when making noticeable changes to the soundtrack, even if the music pieces don't differ in tone all that much, which was probably their impression. I do hope they add the og soundtrack down the road, even though I prefer the new one from what I have heard.
@@NinjaMaster-og8ti not true, I just played both back to back and preferred the originals music and atmosphere. Its artistic taste, the remake after playing the OG just seemed bland in terms of atmosphere at least. Its great dont get me wrong but.. idk the OG is just so mystical.
Some themes are bad but a hefty chunk of it is good. Flamelurker needed that new theme, I mean it is the demon of a dude that beat the heck out if dragons with his fists alone
The face animations do make some of their faces look more like characters from fable than a souls game. And a lot of the glow effects do look rather cartoony. Kinda like the spyro/crash remakes, a lot of the improvements kinda took some of the darkness out of these games (though it'd arguably more of an issue in a dark game like demon souls. Although my nostalgia is disappointed at how bright creepy spyro levels look lll)
For me the one thing I felt was that DS was way easier than any of the others. I know it’s the first of its kind but I was slightly disappointed that most of the bosses were first try... I was really expecting a huge challenge, and I guess a second disappointment is the length of the game. I know it was PS3 but it’s was really short. Either way I still love it, because it’s the OG souls. But I really wanted more than I got, even though what I got was great!
It’s cause you probably played the other souls games that were significantly harder than Demon souls which means you got gud. Now if demon souls is your first souls game then it should be pretty hard.
@@Estupido123 yeah I can totally see that. My first soulsborne game was Bloodborne, instantly hooked, then DS3, incredible and hard as nails, then sekiro then DS1. So yeah you’re probs right, it was just a little bit sad to see the end of the game so quick!
@@RabeaMassaad But the world. The theme. The atmosphere. I never bought the concept of Dark Souls. It just doesn't resonates with me, while it's different with Demon's Souls. PS. What's the best distortion pedal?
@@RabeaMassaad its a remake not demon souls 2 so it being short is what you should expect. This is what i expected and considering this is my first ever souls game i didnt even play the original it was a challenge if it wasnt for countless guides tips and tricks videos i woudnt have even attempted the game. I finnaly found the class i like and im not even done with the game and had it for a week now i have like 8 to 10more bosses to beat really fun and engaging
there's a couple noticeable *new* bugs tho. The gamebreaking luck glitch and lots of lock-on buggyness. Rolling in the wrong direction when locked on, getting stuck on floor geometry when locked on etc.
@@Moody.Smiruai Remakes and remasters are very different definition wise. A remake would mean making a new version of the game on a new engine while having visual changes, quality of life changes, etc. Demon's Souls Remake and FFVII Remake are both examples of such. A remaster, on the other hand, is where the game is essentially on the same engine and only has lighting updates, frame updates, hardware compatibility updates, or updates that affect the menu (like difficulty settings). They also may add things to the game as well. In this vein, Dark Souls 1 Remaster - next gen updates for games - Last of Us 1 R - and technically Persona 5 Royal are remasters.
Gotta agree with the art direction and music gripes. The original felt somehow cold and eerie with its aesthetic, which gave it heaps of personality. Everything looked washed and lifeless, which hammers home the feeling that the game went for: DS is dark, BB is visceral, DeS is depresding.
It was a weird direction to take the music, especially for King Allant and Maiden Astraea. Imagine if they'd added a swelling orchestra to play Gwyn's theme in the Dark Souls remaster.
I'd prefer the new take over when they just put the old music in this new game but sounds more hd, it signifies that they put lots of efforts including in the music dapartement.
Two things about the themes: 1. While I agree that the Tower Knight should have kept the hahahahaha theme, the laughter is still there if you listen 2. Maiden Astrea's new theme only plays when you fight Vinland and it becomes really depressing when he's passive or dead
@@Moody.Smiruai ff7 remake ? More like 30% percent of the actual game, cheesy ass dialogue, bland characters, bullshit cashgrab, only thing decent is the ost
@@Moody.Smiruai since demon's souls is on a new engine, it is a remake. Now if you want to know what a remaster is - look at something like LoU Remaster, DS1 remaster, and a technicality that is Persona 5 Royal.
Thank you DeModcracy for this video. For all the youtubers who praised the original for its atmosphere and art design so many just jumped aboard the "better graphics" bandwagon and totally abandoned the beliefs that the rest of us genuinely held. It feels great to hear a popular souls youtuber actually criticize the aesthetic changes to the game while acknowledging its benefits. I really wish that original graphics/ sound/music was an option.
I would personally also add the overkill backstab/riposte attack animations. I feel some of them (like the halberd) take a bit too long for a game all about fluidity.
I feel like Astraea's new theme is actually Garl's theme, making a last stand against you. I feel like when looking at the themes in context you have to see it through a different one to appreciate it
My take as well. I haven't played the original but I was blown away by the atmosphere during the Astraea/Vinland fight, how the music had this almost desperate vibe to it and how it toned down to these sad, eerie quiet tones once Vinland fell. I can understand preferring the original but this video being so harsh on the soundtrack, calling the Astraea theme "throwaway" was kinda jarring tbh
Yeah, I've heard about this headcanon a lot, but considering the fact that they kept raving about how faithful the remade OST would be to the original tracks prior to the release, it just doesn't sound plausible to me that they'd purposefully change the feeling of a track to fit an entirely different character in the lore.
Thank you for mentioning the facial expressions. It's hypothetically nice to have them, but damn... they just aren't good. Like, they probably were done by talented people, but it was like they were instructed to oversell it since the original had none. The fact I've seen some TH-camrs praising how "great" they look is just perplexing. Last time I checked my entire face doesn't move after every syllable.
Demon's Souls' original composer praised the remake's soundtrack, so I think it's a little unfair to say that it's objectively bad. It may not be to your tastes, and there may be the occasional choice that doesn't fit, but the soundtrack hits far more often than it misses.
I don't think he ever said that it is objectively bad, but that he simply prefers the og soundtrack. I guess the only thing that might come off as objective is the claim that a lot of the music does not fit into the context it plays, but even that I am sure is just his opinion and he doesn't claim that that's a fact. I for one disagree as well, and personally don't see how the tone has completely changed with music pieces like that of Maiden Astraea, but even that can come down to preferance as well. It comes down to interpretation. The explanation he gave as to why he finds the og music piece of Old King Allant to sound more fitting is understandable in my opinion, but almost sounded to me like an explanation why I would find the new remake's music piece actually very fitting for the Old King Allant battle. And I for one also don't see how the new Astraea theme has lost its sad tone at all.
@@jetthejudge I think the point is that people are arguing how the new music completely misses the intended tone of the individual tracks, with the tracks not fitting to their context, yet the og composer herself actually likes the remake's soundtrack.
4 ปีที่แล้ว +8
Do you really think the original composer had a choice here? She is Japanese and publicly criticising the new sound track would be seen as very rude.
Maiden Astraea has her theme in the 2009 version. This theme is for the actual Boss, Garl. The track doesn't start until you initiate combat with him, and it ends immediately afterwards. There is no swelling music for us, it's for him. He IS the hero. It's HIS moment to stand up and defeat you. When he fails, his music fades.... It's easy to miss when you can beat Garl in a minute, but it's an amazing change. The heroic music is for him.... A true hero defending his maiden. Also, the blacksmiths still have skin like the miners... It's not scaly, but it's hard and the exact same texture as the miner skin. That seems like an overly crticial nitpick. It would make sense if they got rid of the texture on their skin altogether. But... They didn't. It's just not scaly anymore. I have also beat the original like 6 times and never once noticed the similarities between the old hero and the adjudicator. He's dead so fast you don't have time to appreciate any lore implications. That's why I'm glad they added in depth lore to the boss souls and item descriptions of later titles.
@@thefebo8987 I actually prefer for remake games to have the music recomposed just to see their new take on it, being too faithful on a REMAKE might as well be called a remastered.
Honestly when it comes to the music, I believe the remake does the Storm King, Penetrator's, and the first half of True King Allant's much better than the original, outside of that the whole thing sounds homogenized, I'd be hard to tell each theme apart if I already didn't know the sounds of the original themes which bring a unique sound to most of the encounters
@@nightfall_6521 I'm talking about True King Allant's theme, for Old King Allant I can hear an organ in the remake, the problem with it is that it's being drowned out by literally everything else they have, it's odd that it doesn't have a huge presence in the theme considering they made a point about using a genuine cathedral organ in London
I feel like they reevaluated the feeling they wanted from the tracks. Old King allants has this new feeling of "its all come down to this", and the tower knight has this new feeling of intimidation and that you are way out of your league. and Maiden Astraea's theme has shifted from Horror to Sadness and regret. and one of my personal favs is the maneater, which has the feeling of "you should be scared".
@@Rjkay45 I do like the remake's ost it's just that I prefer the original by a lot, and when it comes to the Old Monk's theme, I like the sound of it while also matching his story, the beginning for me sounds like something you'd find in a monastery, which in a way makes sense considering the name of the boss, but then the strings transition to a more eerie and sinister tone to reflect not only the monk's disturbing actions but the true demon using him as a vessel, it gives the fight an dreamy yet sinister tone that fits with the overall oppressive tone of Latria
they really needed to not touch Astraea's theme, like at all. Tower night also, but fucking up Astraea's music when you first enter is a full on crime.
What I want is an secret unlockable that makes you able to switch to the original sound track or switch specific songs to the original because there are some pretty good ones
Yeah, I wasn't a massive fan of the ost change or the stuff lost between the remake and original pertaining to the art direction. I think its still great because the original is great, and the quality of life changes are good. I do also prefer the voice acting of the original though. Maybe that's an odd one, but it just works more for me.
@@cosseybomb not really lol, that's such a lame ass argument to dismiss someone's feelings about a remake, especially because there are remakes I really fw lol.
Yeah, I'm not sure what they were thinking with not changing the AI. They claimed they wanted to keep it as faithful to the original as possible, but then they totally overhauled the music which really did harm the identity of the game. It feels like they were saying "Hey, we don't want to harm the identity" as an excuse to not fix the things that were hard for them instead of the things, like the music, which are relatively simple changes. That's just my take though.
@@NinjaMaster-og8ti exactly. Which is why I don’t understand why fixing the AI would “harm the game’s identity”. What I’m saying is that they were simply using that as an excuse.
In all honesty the batshit moronic AI not being updated whilst the graphics are only lends to extreme confusion. I do hope bluepoint updates it eventually, like 30 extra dollars for a new coat of paint? Idk man....
10:11 It's just you, I imagine the increased framerate contributes to the different feel. The director, Gavin Moore has stated in multiple interviews that the animation timings and hitboxes and frame data are all identical to the original. The actual code for animations, AI and numerical calculations in combat running alongside Bluepoint's code is ported directly from the original game. They did the same thing with SotC. According to Moore, during mocap sessions the actors would have to finish a running cycle or an attack within the exact number of milliseconds as the original animation. BP went to pretty extreme lengths to preserve the original game's balance.
@@TheGuraGuraMan Definitely not. if you listen to BP discuss this in interviews it's at the core of their remake philosophy. They want to keep as much of the 'DNA' of the original game as is possible. Moreover I think disentangling original source code from its render pipeline and then porting it in to a new engine is probably *more* work in a lot of cases than just reimplementing stuff.
@@zackbuschmann9005 "No but actually we tried really hard to copy the shitty IA and shitty dragon god fight!" Wow, cry me a river, this is honestly even worse than laziness. I don’t really care about excuses. All I see is the same old IA and bosses which were the only thing I really wanted to see updated. This remake is a big disappointment and the terrible redesigns and new musics just adds to the injury.
@@TheGuraGuraMan lmao it sounds like you don't even like the original game dude. Besides if BP did try to "fix" parts of the original game you'd just complain about how they did a shit job of that instead.
@@zackbuschmann9005 I do, but the game is over a decade old, this was the perfect opportunity to tweak it. Instead they modified the artistic direction for absolutely no reason. Also stop pretending like I would complain about it when I said otherwise. Hard to do much worse than the dragon god boss fight, anyway.
@Robert E. Speedwagon Sure, DS3 did all of that, but it's also widely regarded to have some of the best bosses in the franchise, maybe there's a thing or two worth learning from that. Aside from that, updating the AI has nothing to do with any of the things you said. Let's face it, Demon's Souls AI is kinda derpy, they could've done with an overhaul.
@Robert E. Speedwagon I agree with ds2 bosses having too much health (ancient dragon lol) but not ds3. Ds3 bosses have a lot more different moves than the previous games and most of them have different phases. Bosses in des and ds1 die too quickly. If it’s the same then the boss can’t even use all the moves before dying, It’s unfair only if you don’t even try to learn the moves and just tank everything. Souls series is not only about difficulty but they can’t just take away the challenge to make it “fair”. You’re a human fighting giant fucking dragons how is that supposed to be fair?
@Robert E. Speedwagon ds3 doesn't really have any health sponges. It's more finding time to get hits in that makes fights slower. If anything, that just rewards good timing and learning the boss's moveset. Except maybe Midir, but he's a damn dragon. Also optional.
I love your channel, even though I find myself disagreeing with your points fairly often. I think it’s because you give well thought out arguments as to why you dislike something, instead of just saying “Lul music sucks”. Personally I loved the aesthetic changes and the new music, but you made me think about why, and I can see where you are coming from. Great content.
@@Tekeysix I played the og too and enjoy the music. Then again - my first souls title was Bloodborne, followed by DS 2 and 3. I think it depends more so on the person than anything else though.
I kinda believe that maiden Astraea theme has sort of switched from her theme to Garl Vinlands last stand, it gets sadder and more melancholy when Garl is slain and you have to kill her so i still think it keeps the original atmosphere
I find it really funny when BluePoint said this was the exact same game from 2009 with quality of life changes, they weren't joking. We can now experience killing the Red Dragon in 30 minutes with a bow and arrows in 2020. 😄
A very nice video but a very small error at 3:55, to get the nexial agent that let you teleport between archstones, you do not need to defeat specifically the dragon god but you get it at the first slayed archdemon!
It's funny how music tends to be less memorable when it's remade. I had a similar problem with the Secret of Mana remake soundtrack, which mixed up all the classic original tracks, often switching them out for completely different instruments (the original game was all MIDI music, of course, but it replicated the sounds of a variety of different instruments) and, frankly, was rarely if ever as good (and in some cases, like the remixed Tasnica theme, was a crime against humanity). You have the same problem here with Demon's Souls, swapping out the variety and ethereal subtlety for non-stop bombastic orchestras and choirs. Sometimes less is more. (At least in Secret of Mana you had the option of switching back to the original soundtrack at any time from the settings menu.)
Yeah, the bosses definitely needed to have a few updates to them. Just recently, I fought the Maneaters, and the second one, for no reason, just decided to fly away in the direction of the Old Monk, I couldn't even hit it with arrows, it was that high up. I had to close the game just to try again.
I played the original for many hours, multiple characters and all that jazz. Absolutely loving this remake, I can't find much to fault it over but I'm not entirely done with it, too. I do really like the filters, classic gives it that green tinge I love. And I've never seen lighting make this much of a difference, I've seriously fiddled with the HDR and multiple lighting options so much and marveled at how big a difference it makes on the entire aesthetic of everything.
The facial animations was the first thing that struck me with the Remake. It's nice that they tried, but people's facial muscles don't move that much! It's more grotesque than realistic.
Whats funny is that your least favorite tracks are my favorite. Old King Allan'ts theme has this "it's all lead to this" feel. while the tower knights theme has this imposing feel that your out of your league. Maneaters theme has this theme of "you should be scared". and maiden Astraea has this theme of the pain and suffering the residents of the depraved chasm feel. . and the big reveal of true king allant has an amazing track of the pain and sadness of what the king has become, and the final cutscene the track has the feeling of your grand journey is finally at its end. I think for the remake, they re-avaluated the feeling they want from the music. also I feel like many art changes were made because the original art just looked terrible in 4k. the adjudicator would look more like a shiny suit of armor, the fat officials would just be laughable.
this remake just proved one thing....people will never stop bitching about anything, while some of us are just counting our blessings that we lived long enough to replay this game again with better graphics, amazing controller feedback and some added quality of life, but nope, some people are just the reason why we can't have nice things like this game....already like 60 hours in it, level 120 and in NG+ and i am still enjoying it like crazy......just need to get the rings and the spells and miracles now....
Great video, I'm sick of people pretending the facial animations are amazing haha. Overall it's an excellent game but there are many valid gripes especially if you're a fan of the original.
my overall opinion on the remake is that they were too faithful to original in some aspects, and not faithful enough in others. The AI was way too faithful to the original and really could have used a significant upgrade. better, AI with enemies and bosses that have expanded move-sets would have done wonders for the game's combat. On the other hand, the atmosphere, art style, and music wasn't faithful enough to the original. I think they largely did a fantastic job with the OST, but there's a few songs in it that are so different from the original that I struggle to recognize which theme I'm even listening too. There's also several enemy designs that, in my opinion, are worse or simply less interesting than the original. not to mention, the original Demon's Souls had an ethereal, unsettling, and almost dream-like atmosphere that I feel is largely gone in the remake. DeS:R is still a good game, but as a big fan of the original, it's hard to look past some things.
One for each: I love that this gives me a chance to play a game as it was intended. I wanted to but couldn't in it's prime due to lack of a ps3 until well after online had dried up. One hate: the music feels so neutered compared to the bombastic orchestral that wove into every trailer, review and playthrough I watched online of the game that helped forge the games identity in the time before
I hate how they changed the soundtrack the music is part of what gave the original it's charm, its got a mysterious spooky feel to them now it just sounds like generic stuff.
You gotta admit the dragon God redesign made one of the most badass looking bosses ever into THE most badass looking boss ever. But with a disappointing fight tho
I actually disagree about the nexus. I always felt compelled to return just because of how peaceful and safe it feels. I know there’s not much of a gameplay reason to come back but I still did just to be around the npcs and the peaceful environment.
I agree with the music gripe, what they did is okay but it degrades more then it enriches the fights. I really don’t like what they did to the fat officials and Adjudicator. Lastly I like the old False King Allant over the new one, the old one along with that old theme made him menacing, his look and stare when he turned around made him look like he’s stareing through your soul both your character and you the player he made made me take him seriously. The new one is watered down to me in look.
When i bought the demons souls art book it came with the sound track on cd. When i got it i thought" why would i need this?"After the remake though, im glad i have it.
agreed 100% on the music, I hate how those unique, intimate tracks were replaced with bombastic orchestra pieces. The original DeS had my favourite soundtrack of all From Software games.
i completly disagree on the music, its just rose tinted glasses that make you shit on the new one, at no point i would ever say the old was better other than maybe the iconic laugh
I played OG in 2020 and new music sounds really good, it just doesn't set the same "fever dream" weird atmosphere. If you played OG you would understand what I'm talking about. Sadly, I can say the same about the Remake as a whole, probably.
@@ncrveteranrangermelendez1193 yes that's why I like it, it feels like he knows he's gonna lose but fights anyway. Then when he dies it turns sad to kind of show Maiden Astraea's sorrow for the loss of Vinland. Or Vinland's sorrow at failing to protect her.
one of my favorite moment in the original demons souls was killing madien astrea as my third archdemon. i had spent easily an hour trying to get around garl to just talk to the woman (even managed 3 words once), but eventually gave in and killed him. after she gave her soul, i was crushed. i was forced to return to the nexus and meet its new theme (the one it gets after killing your third archdemon)... its sad new turn forever cementing my sins, musicly, in my memory. i havent played the remake, but it sounds like preserving these moments was pretty far down on their list.
*JUST A HEADS UP THIS IS A LONG ASS COMMENT* Hey man great job on the video. You did a really nice job of explaining your opinions and I really enjoy your content. With that being said I do have one problem with your video and that is regarding your critique of the remakes music. Just to be clear, I think it’s completely fine if you prefer the sound and compositions of the OG over the remake. My problem with your critique is some of the statements you made regarding the use of themes are simply not true, and you tended to go into greater detail into why you felt like the OG music was so good, but when it came to the remake, you opted for more generic unspecific criticism and I feel like that isn’t completely fair to the music team, who did a fantastic job reimagining the music. Let me start off by saying that I am a Musician , I study music in college and I make my living by playing music. I have studied all kinds of genres from all kinds of cultures, and one of the things that bothers me the most is that when people who have no or little experience in music, say the music is bad when in reality the music isn’t bad at all, the person just doesn’t like the music. There is a difference between music being poorly written or not fitting the theme of what it is accompanying, and a piece of music not aligning with your personal taste and wants. If you listen and analyze what they are doing in comparison to the OG, you will discover just how fantastic the soundtrack is, even if you personally don’t like it as much as the original. As for what I was referring to when I said that some of the things you said were just not true, I’ll start with this. At around 5:55, you said that the vocal pattern in the the tower knight theme was “completely lost”. I don’t know if you meant that the theme is no longer there, or if you feel like it isn’t as impactful, but that vocal pattern that your talking about (the huh ha ha ha huh) is still there in the remake. The Orchestration and texture is different for sure, but the theme has not changed. My biggest complaint about your critique, is In regards to maiden Astraea theme. You end up stating that this took a theme that forces you to “take a closer look at your actions” and that the “pain you feel” from the OG was lost because the new theme is a “throwaway theme more appropriate for a thrilling battle”. This grossly undermines what they were able to accomplish with the the new theme. Again I would like to point out that like with the tower knight theme, the original motif is still in the reimagined soundtrack. Part of the reason the OG soundtrack was so memorable was the use of the harpsichord to play the main melody. That instrument has such a unique sound, and when coupled with the dissonance of the intervals used, it creates a feeling of unease, which is fantastic because the whole point of this fight is to have the player question his actions. However the remakes theme does this, and goes even further adding new ideas that fit the lore and characters more than even the OG did. The original theme is an-asymmetrical phrase that loops, with an bass line accompanying It, and throughout the piece there are horns and winds playing a similar pattern to the melody in order to build more tension. This works very well and there is nothing wrong with this version, it’s a classic. However the new theme, on a composition level, and how it fits the lore of these characters and this area, blows the original out of the water. The new theme starts with a drone on the strings, and a quiet pattern being repeated on the lower string instruments. This is followed by an absolutely chilling cello solo that, just like the original, sets this feeling of unease and we haven’t even heard the main theme yet. This section represents the valley of defilement itself. The deeper you go through this area, the more horrific and grotesque it becomes. Thus a player is naturally cautious walking into the room as they have no clue what horrors await them next. However this is juxtaposed beautifully by an almost aria like section. The next melody is sung in a major mode with a lot of skips that are 4ths and 5ths, which ends up giving this new section some old school church chant vibes. So why have a super moody uneasy opening, just to follow it up with this beautiful hopeful melody? Because that relationship perfectly mirrors the relationship maiden Astraea has with the valley of defilement. Then we are hit with the iconic original melody on harpsichord once more. This theme represents Garl Vinland. The next section is by far the best new addition. Again we hear a new motif introduced and this time it represents the player. It uses variations of the theme to really add gravity to what the player is having to do. It repeats the theme 3 times. The first it’s played softly and almost in a timid fashion representing the players realization that he has to kill someone who is doing good for the people in the valley. The 2 time it’s played it’s grows in volume representing the player almost being angry at the world that they have to do this. The 3rd time is a variation of the theme, representing the player making peace with what they have to do and moving ahead to complete their goal. This all comes to ahead in the next section which is a mix of both Garls theme and The players theme, representing their inevitable clash. Throughout this you have vocals and chords in the background that are reminder of the how shitty this situation really is, and how hopeless the world of demon souls is. But at the same time more percussion gets added throughout to represent two people who refuse to lose. Garl and the player. None of this is in the original and adds so much to the game. And if you think I’m reaching, go back and watch the Maiden Astraea cutscene and pay attention to when the themes start. This is what I mean by you can not like the music and still admit that the work done on it is truly spectacular. All of this detail was poured into it, and all of that gets undermined when you don’t take the time to truly listen to the music and try decipher what the composer were trying to do. It is far from generic, far from a dark souls 3 pretender, and the team who put it together deserves HUGE amounts of praise for a job well done. Yet they are getting heavily criticized for no real reason, other than personal preference, and that really isn’t fair to them. So with all that being said, I hope that what I’m saying is coming off as rude or disrespectful. And sorry for the length of this comment, I wasn’t anticipating it being so long lol
Can't agree more about the music! One of the most unique soundtracks not only in FromSoft games, but in the whole genre itself... is turned into something so generic and pretty much forgetable. The worst sin of the remake is the absence of the ability to put on the original music. I hope that Demon's Souls remake will make it to PC, so that this outrageous flaw could be fixed by mods!
Can’t wait to replay demon’s souls (whenever I actually get a ps5, probably be about a year or 2). Demon’s souls was actually the last soulsborne game I played and I still had a great time with it. Great video as always demod
You're the first person I've seen to give an explaination as to why they believe the old music is better in a way other than it was unique. The new music definitely seem to work better as standalone tracks and, although I like it and have been listening to the official soundtrack practically non-stop, it does seem to lack a lot of narrative flow to it and are a collection of set pieces. Your example about the organ immediately makes me think of the lead up to the Ganondorf battle in Ocarina of Time, which was taken to the next level as he was actually playing his own theme, but still it aligns with the remake's lack of true incidental music. Even Bloodborne managed to blend big, orchestral arrangements with the actions taking place and it was actually the Ludwig mid-fight cutscene that even got me into the SoulsBorne series with how the music transitions from a style fitting a troubled, wild beast to that of an honorable knight just trying to do his best. Possibly can't say the same about all the arrangements, but can see how the original Demon's Souls more minimal approach could create a different tone than the remakes.
I am playing Demon’s Souls for the first time on the PS3 right now and my biggest complaint is the remake looks like the exact same game. I know that is what they were going for but I wish Blupoint would have improved the game more than in just quality of life and graphics.
That's interesting. Having never played the original, I'm actually glad the game is the same, so I got to experience the original with super nice graphics. I get your view too though!
I have to disagree with the idea that being able to send too heavy items back, and travel between worlds devalues the nexus. I never played the original Demon's Souls, so I cannot compare it with that. However I have finished Bloodborne, and having to warp back to the Hunter's Dream every single time was insanely tedious. I got so sick of going back all the time.
I agree. I feel like this is closer to what the nexus was originally intended to be which was a hub world where you went to drop stuff off, level up, and then head back out to fight the demons. Honestly I could have survived with less time in the nexus since everything is so bloody spread out, a good example of this is how dam long it takes to get to the monumental. I played the original and am currently in NG+2 in remake and I prefer remake just because it is far less tedious to do things.
Animations are weird accross the board, most weapon movesets are off somehow, changed. You'll find weapons with a vertical-ish windup that then switch to do a horizontal swing, strange arcs and timings and strange roll distances and spacings. From's animation has never been the prettiest but it was always very clear what was going on. With Bluepoint's remake I am often not sure what the hell my character, or enemies, are doing.
I'm a little obsessed to I have dark souls 2 dark souls 3 bloodborne sekiro nioh 2 demon souls remake and finally elden ring the only one I don't have is dark souls 1
It's funny. DeS always played like a beta test for Dark Souls (at least retrospectively). What made the original special amidst the entire soul series was its art direction and atmosphere. Now I'm seeing Blue Point seems to have done away with much that made up the whole point of the original. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad the remake exists. I think it's awesome a whole new wave of people can experience the story for the first time. Given the state of the world I'll probably revisit the original (I still have my PS3). What's old is new again (in so many ways).
I absolutely hate the new music. The original was so perfect. Yes it was low budget but it gave it a sparse quality that matched the tone perfectly. New arrangements sound generic af
As someone who played the old version of demons souls I feel the knock on the new soundtrack is a bit unwarranted. Obviously nostalgia is the reason people buy remasters or remakes of old games they once loved to try and capture those feelings again in the new game. However with demons souls remake being released with a new console, the game is not going to cater to the older or cheap things that people may or may not have loved about the old games. People who have never played DeS may love this soundtrack and I love it as well. I think it's amazing they still kept the old melodies but brought real musicality to them. I'm an absolute huge fan of the old soundtrack but I feel nostalgia is no reason to say the new one lacks.

DS1 and DS2 are dark (although DS2 gets surprisingly colorful at times). DS3 is grey.
you missed the real problem, THEY MADE MAIDEN'S FEET DIRTY

Two things about the themes:
1. While I agree that the Tower Knight should have kept the hahahahaha theme, the laughter is still there if you listen
2. Maiden Astrea's new theme only plays when you fight Vinland and it becomes really depressing when he's passive or dead

I feel some of them (like the halberd) take a bit too long for a game all about fluidity.
they're as long as they were in the original, the character just does more in the remake during the time frame
My biggest gripe : all this visual overhaul, yet SWORDS POKING THROUGH SHIELDS ON YOUR BACK (same for some clothings)
I was really surprised when I saw that. Genuinely thought that next gen meant this wouldn’t happen anymore. Especially after the Unreal 5 tech demo.
I feel like Astraea's new theme is actually Garl's theme, making a last stand against you. I feel like when looking at the themes in context you have to see it through a different one to appreciate it
Well put.
yeah the new theme is very much Garl Vinland since it stops once you kill him
My take as well.
Agreed. I'm actually a big fan of the remake's soundtrack.
Well I mean, he composed it.
@@jetthejudge I think the point is that people are arguing how the new music completely misses the intended tone of the individual tracks, with the tracks not fitting to their context, yet the og composer herself actually likes the remake's soundtrack.
That's why I'm glad they added in depth lore to the boss souls and item descriptions of later titles.
no its just generic epic music. like for every other boss in the game.

I like alot of the new music compared to the original. The og old monks theme sounds like some kids scary show theme lol.

Yeah, I'm not sure what they were thinking with not changing the AI. It feels like they were saying "Hey, we don't want to harm the identity" as an excuse to not fix the things that were hard for them instead of the things, like the music, which are relatively simple changes.

Probably because it was less work to not have to modify the og code.

@Robert E. Speedwagon no just make the enemies not retarded
@Robert E. Speedwagon what bosses are unfair in ds3? I can't think of any

I would Say, that theme changes, are extremely dependant on person. I do understand what you mean, but I have to Say - I like new themes more.
It's the equivalent of getting a huge orchestra to play Gwyn's theme.
The music was the reason I passed on this remake.
I still can't believe they didn't even bother to add a plunging attack to this game
I love the new theme for Astraea and believe it fits the fight much better than the original.
I think they said all the frame data is the same as the original. Maybe the issue is they redid the animations but it doesn’t quite sync up correctly?

Whats funny is that your least favorite tracks are my favorite.

Bluepoint really did a great job, but I really wish they had changed stuff like pvp weapon balance, and less exciting bosses like Dragon God
It's not even a fight from what I've seen, which is really disappointing considering it's design.
I actually disagree about the nexus. I always felt compelled to return just because of how peaceful and safe it feels. I know there’s not much of a gameplay reason to come back but I still did just to be around the npcs and the peaceful environment.
Miyazak's foot fetish made one of the best game series
8:04 I didn't wanna say it but it kept going through my head that her chest totally looked bigger
I do wish they will patch this that makes the bosses smarter
The loss of Maiden Astraea's theme is the biggest travesty of the remake, as far as I'm concerned.
I quite like the new theme, as it is your fight with whatever his name is, not the waifu
The New theme is quite Dynamic Its basically Vinlands theme and then goes sad again when he dies
*JUST A HEADS UP THIS IS A LONG ASS COMMENT*
Hey man great job on the video.
If you listen and analyze what they are doing in comparison to the OG,
you will discover just how fantastic the soundtrack is, even if you personally don’t like it as much as the original.
Imagine if they gave us option to switch back to original music. I already completed remake 2 times and I love it but I miss the old music.
My only problem is the boss ai is still janky as hell and hit box is still laggy feeling
I’ll be honest, I liked the aesthetic overhaul for the maiden in black
Maiden astraea remake theme is one of the best in gaming imo.
4:09 wait how did you climb up ladder so fast in the end, mine is slow climbing all the way
Animations are weird accross the board, most weapon movesets are off somehow, changed.
I love this game. Just beat new game + 3rd time... I’m a little obsessed with the souls/borne. And sekiro.
Bless you bud, glad to see you're enjoying it.
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective thanks!
I'm a little obsessed to I have dark souls 2 dark souls 3 bloodborne sekiro nioh 2 demon souls remake and finally elden ring the only one I don't have is dark souls 1
If I am right. Bluepoint allow to change this aesthetic into old one.
dont direspect maiden in black she is sexiest waifu in all of from games after the remake
While I useually agree with you but I think your being a bit nickpicky
Still cant get a ps5, had a ps3 for over a decade.
I absolutely hate the new music. The original was so perfect. Yes it was low budget but it gave it a sparse quality that matched the tone perfectly. New arrangements sound generic af
Demod please make a " best boss fight cutscene"(from software games) ranking
They should've went the route of the final fantasy 10 remaster where you had the choice between the old soundtrack and the new one
This game should be released on PC as well if the developers want to reach a broader public with it, since the PS5 is very hard to come by.
