- Seizure warning - this video contains some flashing images etc.
1. There have been new finds from Endtroducing..... since this video was put out - so there are samples missing in the video.
2. Small video zooming error at the Stem/Long Stem part.
3. Release date error in the vide on Run's House at 11:52. It was released in 1988 not 1970. Slip up from me, sorry!
4. Soul Food is NOT the drum break sampled in Building Grain. This was confirmed by DJ Shadow in an interview:
The percussion is from a high school record. In the '60s and '70s primarily, you know, any local high school or college would, in addition to having a yearbook, the school would pay to press 500 copies of the school band and what they were up to. That's where the drums come from.

The Samples From DJ Shadow's Endtroducing
All Samples Endtroducing
Always thought of Shadow as a groove archeologist digging up ancient musical relics everyone else had long forgotten about. His masterful ability to take bits and pieces from a multitude of discordant sources, and piece them all back together again with seamless finesse is something truly admirable, and yes I would say a true art form! Purists' have often shouted "theft!," and maybe that could be said in some cases, but I like to think of sampling more as a kind of sound "collage" - and Shadow's ear for this kind of decontextualization is virtually unrivaled, he's most definitely in a league all his own. In the "Scratch" documentary, Shadow had made a very compelling philosophical musing about the basement of records stacked from floor to ceiling that resembled a kind of graveyard, where music/bands went to die. As he sat there surrounded by stacks of wax he said something like "whether you want to admit it or not, this is where your music is going to end up" basically forgotten. Which makes me wonder, what if DJ culture and sampling had never come along? All of that music, all of that vinyl, all of those breaks..just sitting there molding away in storage keeps and basements totally neglected, ignored, left to "die." What a waste! Say what you will about the art of sampling ("art" when it is done well), but if it weren't for people like Shadow a lot of good music from the past would of been totally forgotten and maybe even lost forever. Anyways...great video, thanks for the incredible breakdown!!!
👏👏👏👏
This is an absolutely epic comment.
You sir tell the truth. I like to say that Sampling is curating History of sounds.
@@MarkusAudio "Curating history of sounds" I like that!
Epic comment, thank you!!
*The* album to give someone who doesn't think sampling is an art. This was also the best example (in my opinion) of the Akai MPC-60.
What kills me is when people do the same thing with visual art, collages and all that shit, most people love it. But when someone does it with music they get labeled as unoriginal and untalented. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know anyone with this kind of skill and talent to crate dig to this level and make such a brilliant piece of art from it
And The Avalanches - Since I left you
Avalanches are ace.
Also don't miss DJ Cummerbund. Taking it full out beat matching video too.
@@eniakk Thanks for mentioning those artists. Just recently came across another master mixer named Bill McClintock...DAMN!!! Is all I can say. I highly recommend him as well.
@@freethinker79 Bill McClintock, just queued up two pod interviews and will peruse the tube when on wifi. Looks very promising (metal mashups🤘)! Thank you, Sir.
This should be in the Library of Congress. Incredibly inspiring.
its outstanding that you would take the time to put something like this together.
so when you think of shadow doing it on an mpc60 , it really puts it to perspective
what the endtroducing album really is all over again!
nothing else like it& ive known that since 96. and i would guess anyone else here has always known too,
thank you for doing this
the guy @ the hobby shop been listening to this album since 96 and this is the first time I’ve ever seen it broke down. Fucking amazing.
thank you
There’s no doubt. He does it for the love and not the glory. I’ve always been impressed and astonished by his gifts that he’s blessed everyone with.
I really feel like not many people realize how incredible his work is. I’m glad I’m not one of them.
I'm only 4 minutes in and I had to pick my jaw off the floor after seeing the number of samples he used just in the into. I bought this CD as a teenager not knowing who or what DJ Shadow was but it was an import and the cover still talks to me. At the time I had no idea I had stumbled upon one of the greatest albums ever recorded. DJ Shadow is simply amazing! The musical genius to be able to hear this album in all those samples.
I’m 5 minutes in and I’m like today he would owe a billion dollars in royalties 🙄. He got busy. Room had to have a million records in it.
Now have a look at Beastie Boys' records.
@@simonyricools "Whatcha Want" was my ring tone for years. Love Beastie Boys. :)
@@df5826 Glad to hear that :)
I've been waiting for someone to make a video like this for a while now, nice job
Thank you all for the positive comments on this video. Really appreciate it. I planned to do a video like this for long time, but I actually managed to put it together in only one day!
Here's some updates about the video itself:
1. There have been new finds from Endtroducing..... since this video was put out - so there are samples missing in the video.
2. Small video zooming error at the Stem/Long Stem part.
3. Release date error in the video on Run's House at 11:52. It was released in 1988 not 1970. Slip up from me, sorry!
4. Soul Food is NOT the drum break sampled in Building Grain. This was confirmed by DJ Shadow in an interview:

Are you on Instagram Nic?
that's insane. how did you manage to find all the obscure samples so easily? just googling from people who found them individually?
@@flzrian3623 Whosampled & some other sites. There was I believe, a rym list dedicated to Shadow samples + some blogs.
This is amazing
**smh in commiseration/resonance** 😂
So much work!
Thank you for doing this!
It's really important & gives a path toward deeper understanding of this album's/artist's importance & of the art's importance overall.
The genius sampling of this album aside the video structure is great and very well put together (fits this type of video perfectly)
You have to respect DJs and producers from pre "modern" times. So much time and energy looking for samples, cutting them up, arranging them, and maintaining the creative headspace to make it all into something new and exciting. We (creative types) have really become spoiled with technology and the availability and ease of being able to make music... Albeit not all good music
This album is the greatest possibly of all time, I have nothing but love for every nuance of this thing man. This and preemptive strike are timeless masterworks from the musical gods spoken through shadow. All seriousness the man is visionary and I’m so glad beyond belief Endtroducing exists
sampling, believe it or not, IS an art. this man really indirectly showed me the endless possibilities of sampling and unearthing so many records that never seen the light of day and pretty much reintroducing them to a new audience. as someone who makes beats and digs to this day, ‘Endtroducing’ is the perfect template for anyone wanting to understand the science behind creating such compositions that go beyond the normal hip hop blueprint.
"The only worse thing than questioning sampling as an art form is to defend sampling as an art form." - DJ Shadow
I used to listen to this on repeat while coding in my first job. Legendary.
What's crazy, it took shadow 10 years to find all of the samples for this record. It's a masterpiece
And still not all of them are completely found
I remember reading a review of Endtroducing in Urb magazine when it first came out. I went right out and bought it and was blown away. The whole album is great and it holds up so well this many years later. Thanks for putting this video together. I literally searched "making endtroducing" and found exactly what I was looking for.
I always thought the drum sample on 'Midnight in a Perfect World' included 'When the Levee Breaks', because of the drum reverb, but now I know it's not in there. Thanks for the video!
shadow sampled frickin ORION, the absolute mad lad!
That is so much trial and error and just listening to records. The hours put in by Shadow is hard to fathom. Thank you for this.
This album changed my life. Thanks so much for putting this together
I think what DJ Shadow created here is an artform in the world of music that didn't get enough attention that it deserves. This Album is a masterpiece that has to have its place in music History. There is electronic music, classic or rock music, many influential milestones of each genre, and what DJ Shadow created here....
these references are so diverse I'm respecting this album a whole lot more
This is incredible, what a piece of work! Well done. In the interests of making your work as accurate and complete as possible and not as a criticism I noticed you have 1970 as the release date for Run's House at 11:52. This record was released in 1988.
I knew there was a mistake somewhere! Nice spot!
the secret was to find excellent drum beats and put them front and centre
Hmm
🤔
Too slow Bandstand
@@Bandstand Yeah, I love your videos man, if it's as perfect as the Since I Left You video, then I'm gonna scream.
Honestly i think this is the most impressive electronic album of all time. It beats out Since I Left You because there were so many members of the avalanches, dj shadow did endtroducing all on his own
Incredible effort man, thanks a lot for putting this together - favorite album ever
You are my hero!
I can only imagine how much time it took to do this. THANK YOU for such and interesting all inclusive video. How much the Shadow must do to make all this happen! Brings us together in some interesting ways, yah.
and remember he did these in the mid 90s with a mpc 60 lol. these day you can sample from the internet and using a computer with a DAW so its so much faster but definitely doesnt have the same magic.
obviously finding good samples and fitting them together still would take time. but imagine doing the same thing with crate digging, just like many people still do these days, which i respect.
FUCKING FLAWLESS, a Fucking God!!!
This album has changed the course of music forever. The amount of sampling, the beautiful and flawless production done by Josh, the vast amount of moods, atmosphere and tempos covered all in this album without feeling messy is genuinely incredible. It also was labeled as a pure hip hop instrumental when it first released but soon took so many influences and endtroduces so many genres into the mix like jazz, electronic, trip hop, soul, rock, ambient, funk, classical music, soundtrack, and straight up dark ambient and so much more. Not only do some tracks sound so otherworldly and alien like but there are some tracks that hit you right in the feels and establishes moods you never had before. I'm starting to realize how genuinely amazing this album is, a masterpiece of soundscapes, dream like qualities, fast paced drum breaks and ambient qualities to it and straight up chill music you can listen to when its raining outside. Amazing album
wow. To the creator of this video, this is an impressive amount of work, very nice. This is the first time i've seen a "who sampled" type video done in this style and it is the best most enjoyable way for me so far.
@2:10 shadow is on the record saying the drums for Building Steam came from a high school band instrumental recording and not soul food. Sounds close but it's not it according to the man himself.
Amazing to see all of the creativity and even more mind blowing to know that he pulled almost all of these sampled from the same record store, Rare Records, In Sacramento, CA. Hours a day, pouring his hands and his ears through endless LPs, 7s, 45s to grab seconds of some and most likely nothing from 95% of what he actually listened to.
I ALSO THINK IT'S NOT ABOUT FINDING OBSCURE WAX, IT'S ABOUT FINDING SOMETHING AND CREATING WITH WHAT U DIG ON. U CAN FIND THE EVERYDAY STUFF, BUT IF U DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT WITH THOSE IS THE KEY.
Book of Ecclesiastes “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” So the future of everything is a mash up of everything that has been.
This record is what the inside of my brain sounds like. I’m so glad you broke down all the samples he actually used man. Been a fan of this record for I couldn’t even tell you how long and this is the most comprehensive list of the samples he actually used. Well done and god bless
Anybody who know who this guy is knows what's up. Good job on this vid man I'm sure Shadow appreciates this content right here. Good shit bro
This guy DJ Shadow, he may be one of the most underrated “artists” or DJ’s in history. And I don’t mention that lightly.
This album’s sample methodology changed my life. When I heard about Shadow’s samples (and Cut Chemist, crate diggers), I wanted to see the artists they sampled. They were SO diverse. It opened my mind in terms of where you should be looking for your influences. Shadow and the crate digger generation completely pushed me to be a more open minded consumer of the arts, because once your mindset is focused on visions instead of genres, it’s much easier to venture down unfamiliar roads
The amount of work behind this album... amazing
24:50, the correct song is "'C'era già" not "Questo sì che è amore"
th-cam.com/video/l1Xg1IlmLMU/w-d-xo.html
Cheers from Italy!
I would LOVE it if you did a video on the Private Press! It's so underrated, especially compared to Endtroducing.
Changeling is in 7/4 .. which in itself is a unique and difficult Time Signature to write .. and with samples belonging to other time-signatures to boot.
It really is a true testament of his skill.
Still one of the most underrated and underappreciated song of this outstanding album, and yet it probably is one of the best songs ever “composed”. Truly a masterpiece and a masterclass of tempo in sampling, which in itself is already an incredibly difficult art to really master.
A classic album
And real fav of mine. But this video is UNREAL!! What a lot of work has gone into it 👏 👏👏👏
Thank you!
Life changing record for me. When I listen back to my own music I can hear all the things that were inspired by Endtroducing. Maybe a few things that are borderline theft? 😬
What other songs wouldve fit perfectly 2 make stem long stem
I wanna know what other song samples would fit perfectly with them
I always thought “Parking tickets” was Elliott Gould.
wow... so many samples! Thanks for hunting down all the info Nic! DJ Shadow's music got me into DJ music... and I love him for it. =) Sampling Loudon Wainwright is genius =) I didn't know where most of these samples came from...
All credits go to all the people submitting to whosampled and tracking it down! thanks though, the video took a long while to make!
This has given me a deeper appreciation of endtroducing after seeing all the samples that go into it, wow 👏👏
13:15 - I had no idea this was from a comedy! DJ Shadow made it sound way more mysterious and ominous, as if it was from an interview about a person being unlawfully charged for a parking ticket.
Always thought it was from a film like Usual Suspects or Heat
This entire album is encompassed by an menacing and eerie aura that transforms the context of the samples used to create it. DJ Shadow was battling depression while making it and that struggle comes through sonically.
th-cam.com/video/3nBisbCxHYI/w-d-xo.html
Totally. "what's really to stop them?" always sounded so sinister to me. Seemed like a major miscarriage of justice.
Amazing work. I have listened to the album ever since it came out. Seing how this is put together makes it really more amazing to me. Just simple cause i produce myself and i know about the limitations of the MPC60. I wonder how he has done the sequencing of that. The footage shows just the 60 in his room. i wonder if he all seqenced it on the 60. That thing has limited sample time and no time stretch etc. That album has soul, it changed my whole look on music. I dont like his new work
I think most of it was done on the 60, with a lot of overdubs + ADAT. (i'm guessing for example the string sample on "Long Stem" was recorded straight from the turntable onto adat, it's a pretty long sample .. I can't remember how many seconds of sampling time the 60 has, but that's my guess.) I know a lot of the mixing was done at Dan The Automator's place..on what I think was an early Pro Tools setup?
thank you for taking the time to make this...Thank you also for not using that weird voice that almost all youtubers use to do a voiceover track explaining your opinion of DJ Shadow's creative process.. And do DJ Krush "Meiso" next, please?
I think Private Press will be next, meiso - nice idea though! will add it to the list
this record taught me a very important lesson in sampling, basically, the world truly is our oyster
This is amazing! Great work on putting it all together!😍
Much MUCH bigger and beyond magnificent. Music life changing.
thank you for doing this. this album never ceases to amaze me.
endtroducing is a crate digger's masterpiece
Such an underrated artform
Absolutely
What a album. Have loved it since the very first time I heard it. Incredible achievement ❤
Someone called DJ Shadow the Jimi Hendrix of sampling. Well said, I think.
i think that title belongs to J Dilla, personally
@@archol6596nah bro this album destroys donut
@archol6596 I love Dilla a ton man.. but this album is on another level
Changeling still gives me the chills every time
Top tier historical breakdown! Just the shot in the arm I needed to stay on track. 😎 HHDS
The last sample on this record makes Shadow, the album, the wide array of drawn material, and simply everything THAT much cooler and complete.
AGAIN "BEATS TO THE RHYME" IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF USING THE EVERYDAY STUFF.... IT'S HOW HE USED IT.....U THE MAN SHADOW.
I knew I heard metallica in there
The album is a masterpiece 👌🏽 thankyou for this video So much work went into this.
Thank you!
6:06 seeing a Korean record in the midst of it all gave me goosebumps
All these artist waiting in a basement to be discovered by DJ shadow and take em to their full potential!
This is absolutely amazing work, thanks for making this!
This album is astonishing
Holy shit.... He sampled metallica!!!!! 🤘🤘
I still wonder how he got clearance from them, given they're notorious for protecting their brand.
@@Kolkio22by not telling anyone 😂
thank you so much for making this. endtroducing is my favorite album of all time and i love seeing how it was crafted. excellent video.

God this is amazing! How long did it take you? I've loved this album forever. Well done and thank you!
Thanks SO much for this wonderful and inspiring walkthrough. Keep at it!
Quite amazing video you created. Thanks so much for adding to such a groundbreaking album
Nobody is crafting sh*t like this about records I actually care about on the internet! Excellent attention-to-detail and I love it when people talk… but this video puts every talking-too-f*ckin-much about their opinion TH-camr to shame… lol you must’ve owned a record shop or something. This takes DJs to school, no doubt!
11:33, best part. #187
Am I going mad? I was convinced Best Foot Forward used the ‘Listen’ bit at the start of The Temptations I Can’t Get Next to You.
16:36 My fav dj shadow song "mutual slump" and My fav bjork song "possibly maybe". :)
Amazing work!! If anyone knows the flute sample on ‘what does your soul look like’ please tell me. Dying to know
greatest album ever made. undisputable for me
I love that the algorithm brought me here - this is such a cool breakdown of a masterpiece!!
Having the right influences is half the battle. Seeing all those vinyl LPs piled in heaps _troubles me._
DJ Shadow is a DJ
anyone know the movie or talking during mutual slump? i haven't been able to find anything about it anywhere
Bro i have to give it to you for recognising n sublitling em with artiss/song etc is hard work man, respect my man, i admire your dedication brother, love. Thank you.
Vastly overrated compared to his What does your soul look like EP.
Genius. Such an important album
How the hell he found HE6 so impressive
this album changed my life. thanks for this
Small correction: The drums in "Midnight in a Perfect World" are sampled from "Soul" by "S.O.U.L" ("What Is It" LP, 1971). You can tell by the ghost snare, which is a single stroke in "Life Could" and softer / more roll-like in "Soul".
…but still, thank you so much for putting this together. Great effort, and a great listen.
anyone can rip a sample. not many can put so many together as flawlessly as Shadow
You def deserve a subscribe with this one🙌
Goes to show what an amazing artist he is . And bringing old artists back to life . Sir amazing and glad I was there at the start. Sorry.. one last thing. Met him top top top bloke. Will never forget it . ❤
Changeling is flawless.
An album so immense that he's still got a career off of it over a quarter century later with his reputation intact, despite coming nowhere near it since. And if you needed any more proof that limitations breed creativity, his career is one example. As soon as he moved to the 3000, the quality fell and didn't stop. And now he's using pooters...snore. Drop the software, people!
The biggest shift was probably moving totally away from the MPC like he did after Private Press, if i'm not mistaken.
Changeling is my favorite track off the record, those drums are insane
I know for a good source that he's been sued over the years for the most obscure samples. Nowadays websites like whosampled or videos like this one are making it easier for lawyers to demand royalties. That's why he stopped sampling tons of music in his last albums. The man love to make sample based music, but it's impossible to do with the legal troubles.
@@thirdworldorchestra4997 If you're making money from someone else's work, pay some money. Altho, granted, the demanded percentages are probs out of whack.
You can tell the guy loves his music
This is fantastic. Great work. I fell like DJ Shadow put all this together back in the 90's as a form to make us, here the future, know all of these great other artists that we otherwise wouldn't have met.
This video is phenomenal.
I always assumed 12:12 'suicide its a suicide' was sampled from GraveDiggaz. Wow!
I love this so much
