    Extra information about one of the sources: The drum sample from Pugh Rogefeldt's record: The drummer was Janne "Loffe" Carlsson who previously was part of the duo Hansson & Karlsson. They had some cooperation with Jimi Hendrix. Carlsson died in 2017 and Rogefeldt last night (=the reason I found this video)

    DJ Shadow didn't use the Bjork sample the way this guy was doing, he sampled one version where the ringing phone sample was removed for clearance issue.

    • @zeekade79
      @zeekade79 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep, Björk sampled Scanner in that song (from the 1994 album Mass Observation). Later versions of Björks album Post lacked the ringing phone sample.

    The vibes and flute track, is that a sample taken from a record, say a Herbie Mann record? Or was that played with a synth keyboard and recorded in?

    Just based on my own listening, I don't think he sliced the drums into individual notes. The beat directly after the song's intro sounds like it begins with the full third and fourth beats of the two-bar drum pattern you isolated (BSBB S-B-).

    it always fascinates me how musicians like DJ Shadow got away with basically stealing pieces of audio (aka sampling) from other tracks/songs and using them in their own productions which then got released officially and no one said a word about them violating the copyrights or some shit... if I sample a record by Bjork and try to release it I might get sued. What's the deal? What's the catch? Where is the gap in the law, where's the grey area?

    • @DustfingazBeats

    • @hihihi8447
      @hihihi8447 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Shadow got permission from Bjork’s label to use the sample. That sample is credited in the liner notes of the album. You’ll get sued if you sample Bjork and release it because you didn’t get permission to use it. Simple stuff.

    • @jaydoe647

      The difference is the laws changed bro.

    • @arkennoren0
      @arkennoren0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaydoe647 It was a mix of different things. You have to remember he was small time (and technically still somewhat is), he used a lot of obscure samples that many people don't recognize today, and according to an NPR interview his record cleared at least the most recognizable and most used samples (one of them being Bjork.)

    • @jaydoe647
      @jaydoe647 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was very interresting. To be honest, i loved DJ Shadows Endtroducin for a long time. What i see here is really dissapointing to me. Here he just jacked other peoples work and not even did something creative with it, just pitched it a bit and put together. This here just remains the original character of the samples. This is other peoples work and credit... I would be ashamed to put something like this out with my name

    • @wondashozen
      @wondashozen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Reconquer Europe that is modern music in a nutshell. Shadow is most definitely a capable "musician" in the classical sense. He just chose to sample records for his work. The way I explain this to people is that the artist is taking these songs you likely have not heard and painted a mural. Combining different elements (paints) and changing the shade to create their own product. It's art in its own right. You appreciated it at one point. It inspired you. I like king crimson 21st century scitz man but I like power by Kanye more. It's all subjective I guess but it's a shame you no longer appreciate shadows album.

    • @daehtnulb
      @daehtnulb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      shadow also plays his own drums, clearly very rhythmic, musical, and original/personal

      Reconquer Europe
      I don't see how combining three few second samples of different genres and making them into fluid song isn't creative. But to each his own.

    • @infesticon
      @infesticon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He IS creative but yea he's not as clever as he seems if you know the samples, The clever part was finding the samples re editing them and putting them together.

      Stuart Dawson
      People put Shadow on a higher pedestal than most considering how popular and influential Endtroducing is. For a lot of people I know. That’s the few major sample based instrumental records they know.
      I love Shadow and i still consider a lot of his work as god tier sampling.
      But what people have done nowadays with samples is completely mind blowing.
