  • Mafia 3 was a fun play. But the game was Kisses fingers like an italian chef beautiful. Hanger 13 and 2k messed up royally on this game with mundane repetitive BS disguised as game play. Could have been game of the year for sure if they developed a proper game. Such a let down, well anyway. Here's Wonderwall...

I still remember when I was playing mafia 3 and my grandma just sat and watched me play for like an hour, she said it was really accurate; the only complaints she had was my driving and she said that White only stores weren’t as common in 1968.

I’ve been playing mafia 3 recently and I love the game. I like the fact that it’s extremely detailed from the world to the missions. The player is allowed to basically take on missions when they feel like it in whatever order they choose. I can’t say the game is boring at all but it is slower than a GTA 5. And I never beat GTA V but mafia 3 I can honestly say is under appreciated

I mean have you really though? You have very limited numbers of guns. Where you can only have two guns at one time. why is this designed like this? Mafia 1 or 2 had way more guns to choose from and more than two slots for guns. So you have a lots of different play styles when it comes to gunplay and the combat system in the game.

The main thing that kept me playing was the story I really did like the the story. You could even alter the story a little bit with the rackets you assign to your underbosses. It's just that there is no sense of difficultly or challenge in Mafia 3 and you're mostly doing the same thing over and over again. Sure you can do these missions any way you want, but the format is mostly "go here, kill these people, interrogate this person, take the racket, assign the racket" and it just feels like you're doing side missions most of the time. It's an average game in my opinion and should definitely get more love for its story. The only reason for the hate was the gameplay, the story is always great in my books.

I remember getting this game on ps4 as a demo then got it for free through ps plus membership and I totally loved the story and realism of the world like going to a shop or a bar that you're not allowed to go in because of the segregation that was in that time and the whole aspect of having multiple business fronts was cool at first however I had a couple of glitches in them like the game sometimes would give you a mission where you have to drive to a location and steal a car loaded with supplies but when you arrive there nothing happens or having to sneak into a police station to retrieve a van full of weapons but the stealth system doesn't register because cops for some reason will know exactly where you are, but however I love the soundtrack it's one of the best things in the game as well as cars and have abilities such as cutting phone wires from witnesses or calling backup or have someone collect your money and they deliver them to your safe house.

The city is very well done, the soundtrack is tremendous and very accurate, there's some big moments connected to that, like going to kill Sal Marcano listening to Bad Moon RIsing. That said, I bought the game at release, and since I changed systems I got the Definitive Edition early this Fall. Since 2016 I've completed the game 5 times, and all the bonus content and DLC was worth it. I like the gun gameplay, the finishers, the driving mechanics... and I've only found minor graphic bugs. The story is worse than the original (they made several rewrites, and completely missed the point of certain events) lvl design also feels dumbed down, the original was much harder with really agresive AI, not only were they smarter, they really wanted you dead so much they would try to beat you to death if they ran out of ammo and couldn't find another weapon to use. it's also much more detailed, especially when it comes to the world, for example you can prevent having wanted lvl by killing cops before they reach phone booths because in the original they have to call the precinct for reinforcements to start some bigger pursuit, and there were no mobile radios back then, so if you silence them quickly there won't be anyone coming after you.

My biggest complaint is that they made it in a historical period just like Mafia 2, awesome i love the 1960s and it's music. Except, the setting is no longer that important and just feels like a backdrop instead of part of the story. There are no passing of seasons, there are no historical events to experience(like vito experiencing world war 2, the hard winter, being ejected from the military, passing time in jail, experiencing the new time once he gets out of jail), they ignore the thing that made 2 so cool to me - you experience the era to a degree. They spend so much time telling us how much of a badass the main character is in 3, but we don't experience the build up or learn much about his childhood or experience the early years he had like we get a glimpse of with vito.
Mafia 2 perfectly sets the time and tone of the series with the setting and encapsulates you in that time period. Mafia 3 kinda drops you into the 60s and says "Racism and machine guns, have fun!"
And don't get me wrong, i enjoyed shooting the klan members for my first go through but the story left so much to be desired and that's the thing i enjoyed so much about 2. 1 Was good on that too but never got into it as much until the remaster and haven't finished it yet.

I get your point, and i do like mafia 2, but i still feel like mafia 3 is under appreciated for what it is.
And you get lincoln backstory as you progress the story along. I understand why u like that they put vito through various places. But if they do the same thing with lincoln it probably wont work as well. For someone whos not from US, mafia 3 shows me how bad racism can be, and i think lincoln handled it amazingly, we might not get full experience to that era as you said, but driving around new bordeaux and seeing how different people live on one side of the city compared to the other also shows it to some degree imo. Heck, in the poorer side of the city theres no police patrolling, they tried their best and i personally love the world. Their only drawback is for sure the repetitive missions.

I think the next step for a Mafia game would be one that allows you greater control over. You start off as an associate, become a made man, and eventually end the story by working your way up to be the boss. From there, you have open control to negotiate with other families, order hits (and since people would want a piece of the action, carry them out), manage rackets, appoint capos, pay off police or politicians and balance your need for violence with your ability to stave off heat, etc. You can expand your family from one city to another (Vegas, anybody?) and make decisions to keep your underlings happy and loyal, or face the consequences by dealing with betrayal. I think a Mafia game like this, starting from the early days of the Prohibition maybe all the way to the 50’s, would be absolutely awesome.

I waited patiently for them to shore up the game's short comings. But somehow they delivered less and less for each iteration. The 2nd game was agonisingly empty and underutilised.
I once found a working train station at one point.
This station did not feature in the main game *in any way*. That summed the game and the series all together perfectly. I beautiful sandbox without a game to go with it.

To be honest, Mafia 3 become my favorite of the series. Repetitive? Maybe yes. It's avoidable if you don't try to do all collectables at once, and you do along with story missions - and this game has a good story. This is the first of the series that is actually an open world game, that is, you're not stuck to a mission as you leave your bed, and most side jobs can be done in any order. Not to mention that collectables aren't "locked" to specific missions, which I found kind of frustrating on previous games.

The glitches I experienced in my 20+ playthroughs weren't really game-breaking like locking me out of missions but more so as flying cars, invisible people, and slowly floating corpses, which I enjoyed very much. I get the same feeling with gta v but less pronounced as there are small events here and there, without speaking about cars and tuning. But still, for me personally, gta iv was the most "complete" in the sense that there are so many details, interactions, missions/jobs you can do. Wanna be a police officer/fireman? No problem. Wanna earn some money? Let’s be a taxi driver. The possibilities there are so huge compared to the two newer games, they don’t even come close when just talking about vanilla/remastered versions (without mods).

For me the game just feels unfinished, and the graphics are a mix too

That’s true sometimes it looks really nice and sharp, and other times like you’re in an unrendered concept of the map, but it never renders hahaha especially out in the bayou

The first area, with the amusement park level and all those missions were amazing. The rest of the game is nothing like that.

I agree with you on all your points, even that the game gets boring and is sometimes poorly fleshed out, but it's one of those games, like SC : Conviction or Max Payne 3, to me. It has a litany of immediately apparent issues, but the combat is made so satisfying... Not through the gameplay alone, but by integrating the narrative in every combat encounter in order to enhance the power fantasy. By having characters discuss our protagonist's recent actions before combat, realising when their numbers thin out and commenting on how terrrified they are that we'll spoil their party. I remember a particular line from Splinter Cell, when you infiltrate Black Box and the security officers, I believe were splinter cell trained on Fisher's own established program, Start pouring in the office areas , boasting, insulting and taunting. After dispatching a few of them, they'd start losing their confidence and sound way more scared. At that point, some NPC would sometimes blurt out 'GODDAMMIT THIS ISN'T SOME REGULAR CIVILIAN WITH A GUN, IT'S SAM FUCKIN FISHER... WAKE THE FUCK UP AND PUT HIM DOWN!' that line is probably my favorite in gaming history, for how encouraging it was. Arkham games did it better though, by having NPCs mental states actually affect gameplay, by altering their routes and combat behavior, like shooting off perches. TLOU2 did something similar but it was more to guilt trip you than encourage more carnage. Still cool though...

I agree with you on nothing to do. I see basketball courts and football stadium can't use them. And I know there's boxing but am not allowed to complete. And the DlC is why I'm glad I bought it. I enjoyed building Sammy's place up and doing the races and getting extra cash

What if Mafia takes place after red dead redemption 1 think about it
Red dead redemption takes place in the western days, Mafia in the 30s, to 50s and gta in the modern times it just fits in so good

Mafia 3 is actually the only one I haven't beaten, and it was because of a game breaking bug I encountered about 80 percent through the game where I couldn't speak to a mission-giving npc. And I just didn't have the energy to repeat all that grinding again.

I loved this game. Tho I agree it was repetitive but it didnt bother me I didnt mind driving or the shooting. I was too immersed in the story. The sound track and collectibles were good. However I do understand how some may get bored and ur right nothing in the open world to mess around with. But overall I really liked it

The gameplay of the game is really bad. It hurts the game. But the Story is fantastic and the protagonist is excellent. Lincoln’s such a badass.

I think there is a pc mod that allows you to play only the story missions, that way it is a pretty good game.

The issue with mafia 3 is the story has such a good plot that u wanna keep playing but missions are rinse and repeat damage a gang area costing them enough money to spawn boss then kill the boss and move to the next area with no variation of mission. The game play was fun but the story mission just felt like a choir nothing compared to the older games

Mafia 3 gameplay was what held it back from being a truly amazing game. The world building and atmosphere is top tier. The characters are great and fit their respective factions and backstory, story is better than most games storylines. But omg the repetitive gameplay and fetch quests makes me want to puke.

Way to be dramatic. Never once thought of the game as repitive, you supposed to kill every single group. That's what makes it so realistic.
