I actually liked Mafia III. I just wished they kept things from Mafia II like Car Washes, Gas Stations, Clothing Stores, and a few other mini things. I liked buying things. They just gave us all the clothes for free. I saved up almost 2.6 in game million dollars before any DLC dropped hoping it would come in handy and I barely needed any of it. The most I spent was on cars and I can just boost a short racetrack for $2000 per time while I wait for my $20000 from my districts. Point is it's too easy to make money and not enough stuff to spend it on.

I agree on the mini things, there where loads in mafia 2 that made the game feel more in depth. That made me hype and buy mafia3. Just to find out there was nothing left at all. Scraping cars, stealing your money back in shops. List goes on and on.

This game is like a 8/10 hidden under a 6. I've beaten it twice now, once at launch, then a few weeks ago with all the dlc. There are memorable missions, the story is good, but it's like a great film with a bad director. Imagine a movie with all the A list actors, the best writers and a great budget, but for some reason the film doesn't coalesce and come together. That's Mafia 3 in a nutshell, memorable missions splintered between hours of repetition, 60% of the game is the same thing, 1 of 3 mission types that revolve around killing an enforcer, breaking something or interrogating someone. Plus the optional missions are essentially just deliveries. I wish they had spent a little bit more time figuring out how to tie everything together, the infrastructure is right there. Gun play is solid, driving is some of the finest in an open world game I've had in a while (cars are heavy and powerful with a good sense of inertia, plus have customization options.) The story is well written with some emotional grounding especially thanks to the pastor and the way they tell the story, the DLC is FANTASTIC,( the dlc missions are more interesting than most of the main story missions.) but it's experience as a whole is mired by the repetition. It makes the whole thing less engaging as a whole.

Glad I found this comment, I wasn't sure about getting this game even after watching (and enjoy) an entire playthrough with all the bad stigma & reviews. It felt off putting. But I came across this video & your comment it reminded me that this game wasn't bad, it just kinda repeats itself alot. But hey, so long as I have fun & enjoy the story to some extent I don't have any problems getting this game, and I think I will once I have the funds to do so.
      So thanks 👏

Its gonna be free this month lol my question is do i have to play the side quest and do all the little things that are "repeating" can i skip it and just go for the story like its not a open world game.

    • @ChuloInYourCulo
      @ChuloInYourCulo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

well the story is put on pause in order to do fetch quests like the other guy says that are really repetitive. So in a sense, no, you can't just get to the story because you have to spend an hour or 2 per district doing cookie cutter kill/steal/destroy missions to control districts and then go after Marcanos guys and push the narrative

dank I know I'm probably gonna get hate for this but I found Mafia 3 to be one of the most boring repetitive games I've ever played. Sure doing the same thing over and over may feel like you're tearing down the Mafia but it doesn't make it any more fun. Also unlike Mafia 2 there isn't really a story within each mission rather just a repetitive drag to get to the next cutscenes which will just tell you about the next target you need to kill. It took me a few months to finish as I kept having to drop it and btw I loved the first 2 or so hours where it was story driven and there was an emphasis on characters but after that meh

I thought I'd at least be able to enjoy the story but that is tarnished by buggy third person stealth and shooting. The game is a mess and it's a real shame. Honestly, I hate to say it, but it's not worth slogging through the game just got the story. I thought it would be, but it's just constantly breaking and glitching out. It ruins the whole experience. Tryte This game was awful. What a sad follow up to Mafia II. Too bad they went all in to push narrative laden identity politics as opposed to providing a solid sequel to a masterpiece of a game. How I long for the days when video games and movies were all about the fun factor and not about pushing an agenda. For fuck sake. I play video games to escape the madness of the world. But in seeking to escape this madness with Mafia III it steeped me in more of it.
      What a wasted opportunity.
By not continuing Vito's story they squandered this franchise. This game will be forgotten. Mafia II will live on.
What The Last Jedi did with Luke...this game did with Vito...and in both instances it was all because of an agenda that was being pushed. There's a word for that: PROPAGANDA.

What they should have done in a MAFIA game is: Make the main character have occasional bouts of insanity where he hallucinates flying mob bosses shooting fireballs while he trips over water puddles while zombies run at him from the sides. The only repetition I see is the fact you have to drive to places over and over to shoot people, you know, something someone who wanted revenge and power would do as a protagonist in a video game. Like in every other open world game that features shooting people. The fact that each area to do that in is different from the last seems to escape some people. Personally, I enjoyed this game far more than Mafia 2, as I like busy work while exploring, taking in the atmosphere and headshotting sons of bitches trying to kill me, like I do in every other open world shooter. i enjoyed sliding around corners at high speed, weaving through traffic in a muscle car and infiltrating rackets and murdering everyone involved. Over and over. No fuss, no dream/drug sequences, no aeroplanes overhead with magical spotting powers, no fucking multiplayer, no animals sneaking up on you, just a relatively realistic open world to have my fun in. This game delivered for me.

  • @afig2556

I could never understand why people fucking hate this game so much. It's repetitive sure but the thing you're actually doing is really fun. When I was on my 3rd play through I was having too much fun to care if the graphics 2 miles away weren't perfect. And the repetitiveness is pretty much it's only flaw. Also it basically improved every thing about mafia 2. Better driving. Faster cars. More features. Better characters. Better graphics. Better story. Better voice acting. Bigger world. Underbosses. Better ways to get anything like the arms dealer. Like what the fuck are people's problems

Thank you for doing this. Mafia 3 was so surprising to me I think it's actually one of the best open world crime games out there. I think it's easily the best when to comes to story boasting some of the best written characters I've seen in years. It has legitimate nuance and humanity. Even the main villain is surprisingly sympathetic by the end and the last scene has got to be the classiest thing to come out of an over-the-top revenge story.
It sucks that first impressions matter so much because this game is really something special in so many ways. From it's unique setting with an amazing soundtrack, to it's brutal tight gunplay and it's excellent story with nuance and insightful social commentary this game was fucking great.

The Mafia franchise has often been confused with other authentic open-world sandbox entries, especially Grand Theft Auto. The main difference is that Mafia was a linear story-driven experience at its core that used the appearance and setting of an open-world to enhance its narrative. It was a bit jarring at first, but once I got used to it, I was able to play the way the devs wanted me to play, instead of the way i thought I should be playing.
In its final updated state, Mafia 3 is an awesome experience for the most part. The combat mechanics are the best in the whole franchise, with a much higher emphasis on stealth, supported by a hybrid traditional/regenerating health system, although you can still feel free to go in guns blazing if you have superior firepower. All your objectives involving dismantling rackets are directly tied to your overall personal mission to bring down Sal Marcano and his entire crime family, so you actually feel like you're making a genuine impact on everything. Your three underbosses add extra elements that actually make you feel in charge of your own criminal empire. They offer you numerous perks and enhancements for giving them conquered rackets and districts, and you can increase their kickbacks and loyalty by completing racket deliveries and other side missions. Choosing to spare informants and racket bosses will also result in a larger reward after you officially control the racket.
In the end, I'm also glad that I gave Mafia 3 a second chance. It may have some noticeable issues, but it still manages to provide a really good experience with conviction and purpose!

Since the recent re release I decided to jump back into Mafia II and after completing that, I decided to give Mafia III another try. I am glad I did! I love how the driving feels! The cars have real weight to them and crashes have real impact. I am falling in love with the setting, the radio music, the atmosphere and people in the open world, it's all really great! I was upset at first that the main character wasn't really part of the Italian crime families, and you don't get to be a 'made man' in this game, but the main story is growing on me. I am having a lot of fun now and am also glad I gave it a second chance!

  • @cristhian900
    @cristhian900 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

When Mafia II players demanded “more things to do” in Mafia III, I think 2K totally misunderstood what players were really saying when they said they wanted “more things to do”. We wanted more things to do in terms of customization, clothing options, car customization, eating at diners, taxi fast travel, food vendors, side/odd jobs, side activities, activities with friends, cabaret shows, gas stations/car washes, maybe even planes and other aircraft, boats. We essentially wanted the great storytelling of the Mafia franchise but with Grand Theft Auto level side content. Now, Mafia II had a lot of these things, but not as much as GTA IV or GTA V. In Mafia 2, you could only free roam during a mission or before starting a mission. Mafia 2 didn’t really have a day/night cycle as time of day/weather was tied to specific missions. Hanger 13 took the Ubisoft approach to Mafia 3 and prioritized quantity over quality. They added more stuff to do alright. But not the stuff we wanted. They added “more stuff” in terms of repetitive main missions but very limited side content.

I had almost the exact same experience with the game and I really felt that they shouldn't have realised when they did and the should have held it back a month or so because that would have led to a much larger number in sales for hanger 13 and most likely more positive reviews. Though I'm so glad they changed the game in many ways and although it has it's fair share of bugs mafia 3 has a both compelling driven and well written story which kept me wanting to continue. And also the brutal kills are the best. Mr clay is a bad ass.

I think this game has so much going for it and is for sure worth a second chance, I can get over the graphics issues. The world building is amazing, locations, the sounds track, the way people react to you in different neighbourhoods the character and voice acting are all fantastic. The main issue if have it the last of variation in the gameplay, I find all the side missions are very similar and there isn't much to do on the open world side of things. Still I've recently gone back to it after not playing for almost a year and think its absolutely worth a second go.

I'm doing everything in Mafia 3 by clearing out the map just like I would if I where playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey or any of the Far Cry games. We all know there is a cult following in those games that absolutely loved them and all their flaws, repetition and all. There are repetition gameplay mechanics in virtually every open world games so I am confused by the complaints that it's "repetitive". To me it's fun. It's not the goal but the journey that's fun.

The people upset about the repetition probably dislike those games too. Ubisoft games for example have notoriety for pretty much being reskins despite them selling a lot. You don't hear praise from people who like the repetition because they're busy playing their game.

I also find it annoying when people use the repetitive argument because honestly all games have repetition lol especially shooters so it just sounds stupid to even use that excuse.

@@ryliegannonkendall7436 I see what you are saying, but say GTA 5 you never really do the ''same'' mission in the mainstory. It's not like you rob the same bank, drive the same cars etc. Repetitive in Mafia 3 maybe ( I havent played it ) is because you only get assassination missions for example and nothing else. That for me is repetitive

ZekeMagnum true but the shooting and gameplay mechanics as well as never being in the same place twice when doing a mission make it fun enough to overshadow the repetitive objectives, and it does have a good story of cold blooded revenge and an amazing soundtrack. I also really loved that liiiittle easter egg at the end that referenced the real-life conspiracy theory (which isn't necessarily false just because it's a conspiracy theory, but it IS just a theory) about how the Italian Mafia family that was based out of New Orleans under Don Carlos Marcello (Sam Marcano?) orchestrated the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
In fact, I had found New Orleans to be a weird choice of location as pop culture doesn't really associate Mafia with it. But it turns out, New Orleans was the home of literally THE VERY FIRST MAFIA FAMILY TO EXIST IN THE USA, going all the way back to the 1880s/1890s. In fact the original Don of America's very first Italian/Sicilian Mafia family was the basis for the character of Angelo Bronte in _Red Dead Redemption II,_ which primarily takes place in 1899. In fact, the New Orleans Mafia was one of the nation's PREMIER Italian Mafia families, alongside the Chicago Outfit and the 5 Families/The Commission of New York City. But we don't really hear about them much because they had a LOT of setbacks, arrests, and deaths (including Don Marcello) in the 1980s that essentially destroyed them. America's ORIGINAL Italian/Sicilian Mafia family. Destroyed by the Feds thanks to RICO laws in the 80s & 90s. Similar thing happened to the legendary Chicago Outfit once run by Al Capone, but they didn't get hit HALF as hard and are still able to operate today.

If this game was in the hands of developers like RockStar or Eidos Interactive, then this game would have been given 11/10. The story and setting of deep south politics, corruption, rackets, and black southern history is literally world class and some of the best portrayals I have ever seen in a creative medium. It wasn't afraid to get ugly and realistic, or to show the brutality of the mob. It was such a good game, it just didn't have the best development team compared to other huge titles in it's category like GTA, Red Dead, or Max Payne.

Thanks for this video. I absolutely loved the first Mafia. Then Mafia II came out and I was very sceptic. I always considered the first Mafia as one of the best games ever and an absolute classic. When you've got such good memories of the original game and eight years later a sequel gets released it makes you think: "How can it ever be as good or come even close to the quality of the original? Why can't they just leave the classics alone?" I gave the game a try, but didn't like it. It wasn't until just last year that I gave it a second chance and this time I absolutely loved it and it immediately went on my list of favourite games ever.
After I finished Mafia II I saw some video's about how bad Mafia III would be. There are so many things that were possible in Mafia II and even the first Mafia that are no longer possible in Mafia III. A user called Eduard Makarchev has several video's here on TH-cam that show many things you could do in Mafia, but are not possible in Mafia III. I thought: "What kind of bullshit is this? Why did they remove all kinds of features, instead of keeping the things that were already possible in previous games and then adding even more features?" I thought it was ridiculous and never even gave the game a chance. Now I suddenly came across your video and maybe I should try it. Mafia games always have a great story, a fantastic atmosphere with a superb soundtrack and very good gameplay. Why should I give a shit you can no longer go through the car wash like you could in Mafia II. That's not the reason you play Mafia games. So, again thanks for your video. I think it's time to give this game a try. With Mafia II I also waited several years and in the end I absolutely loved and it immediately became one of my favourite games.

I put this game off for two years..got it sometime in 2017, played about 1/3 of it and eventually set it aside..thought it was long, a lot of driving and repetitive racket missions. Decided to give it another go last week during this corona quarentine shit..idk why, but it feels like a different game. Driving is so realistic..brutal kills are so satisfying..gun battles are so much fun, the stealth play is better than a lot of stealth games, music is incredible, the story missions are terrific..Lincoln Clay is a top notch character as is Donovan.. and the little details like the racial slurs from police and random civilians, dying in a car crash if you're too fast, plp running to call the cops when you commit a crime, hearing gators eating bad guys that fall into swamps, the radio outlets reporting things that just happened on a mission after you finished and got into ur car..just so many small things..the city looks beautiful asf, graphics are incredible..Fully enjoyed it..second half of the game pulls you in. The DLC is still quite expensive, but I'll certainly have a go soon..this had a chance to be a masterpiece, but it fell short..but it's very much worth a one time playthrough at least. Biggest flaws were the bugs..easily the buggiest game I've ever played, the repetitiveness which has been mentioned and I thought they could offer more things to buy. Odds are you'll get to the end of the game with a lot of money to just throw away..have about 200k after beating it and nothing left to purchase..but this is minor lol overall, 7.8/10.. just under an 8 imo.

Well I played Mafia II on PS3 and that was a great game. Now, Mafia III was also a great one, but I've been disapointed by some things :
    - Only a few car can be modified, while you can modified all of them in Mafia II
    - You can't save a car (basically, it has the same system than in WatchDogs, you call someone, he brings you a car, you got like 14 cars available, and only these are customizable)
    - You can't repair your car at a gas station, you also can't wash it, which is quite useless but it added a touch of realism and coooome on, this isn't complicate to do
    - You can't buy stuff to steal a car, I mean it was more realistic in Mafia II
    - You can't buy clothes in actual shops like you could do in Mafia II (this also could have added a touch of realism)
    - There are a lot of shops, jewejers, butchery or whatever all around the map, very well made and very well detailled btw, but you can't do anything in it ! there is not even ONE store for weapons ! 😕
    - You can't restore your player's health by eating or drinking like in Mafia II since you can't do anything in all the shops and bars, what a shame 😞
    - As already said, missions are quite the same, and side missions are all the same, you got the choice between "steel a semi" or "steel a boat"...
    - You can't use phones, even though you see a lot, lot of them in the game, this would have been cool, instead of calling people from your inventory !
    - More interraction with the world could have been great. Like for example in Mafia II you had to stick to the limitation (you even had a speed limiter function for that) when you were next to a police car
Aaannnd maybe there's more to say, but a game can't be perferct, even though it would have been close to it if things listed weren't true...
Last thing : what about the shitty texture ? I mean this looks sooo like a WhatchDogs, with random bugs and (too) shinny texture, you really got to improve this !
