  • (For those of you who experienced a poor quality upload yesterday - I have traced the issue down to a bad TH-cam upload / internal conversion. I have tested this one and all looks well. Thanks for your patience!)
Is there really such thing as a free lunch? Or a free reel to reel machine? Watch this video to find out if I lucked out or got what I paid for!
Thank you for watching and subscribing!

Approx 11:00 That's a dedicated erase head on the left and the rec/play head in the middle. This unit uses the same heads for record and playback, same as most cassette decks. Higher-end reel to reel and cassette machines have separate record and playback heads, and usually such a feature is prominently touted on the machine itself. In cassette decks, the two heads are actually built together (side by side). With reel to reel the record and play heads are usually separate assemblies.
Incidentally, in older receivers and amplifiers, a three-head tape deck is the reason for a 'tape monitor' circuit, rather than simply having another position on the function selector. It permitted the user to hear what was actually being recorded to the tape by the three-head machine.
Units similar to this were often used in the old stereo consoles - it could be fitted at the factory, or the dealer could install it in an existing unit. There was plenty of room for them in bigger models, but if you had a midsize model like my 1967 Magnavox Astro-Sonic, you usually had to sacrifice the record storage well. Magnavox also sold the tape decks as separate units (same item, actually, just with its own cabinet).
Expensive, too. My console sold for $300 new (no tape deck) but if you ordered the tape deck option from the factory, the price jumped to around $500. Those are 1967 price tags, by the way.

The video looks fantastic! I don't need my sunglasses anymore to deal with the previous brightness. Hehe. Keep up the great work. :)

13:00 - looks almost like a mirror image of my deck. Motor on the left, counter and meter on the right, very similar idler and belt arrangement (but again, my belt is to the right spool). Designed in the 1950s, made into the 1980s, and almost as small (if not smaller) than yours.

I’m really surprised it functioned, (mechanics),, and the electronics still worked at all. Good lucky score there.

Is this a refresh of the one you posted yesterday? Looks like it. Picture quality looks better though.
