People paying crazy money for new old stock tape on eBay have rocks in their head.
You don't know what you're buying!
R2R tape is still being made and it's premium quality and it's not that expensive in the scheme of things.
It's actually cheaper now to purchase than it ever was and it's new and flawless.
ATR are still going, and I use RTM, and would strongly recommend people to buy when making new recordings.
    It's well worthwhile.

@@stanleycostello9610 If they are made in the problematic decade (1974 - 1984) then they do - if they are amongst those brands that are affected. I have bought un-used tapes from that time frame that were un-usable because the magnetic material had turned to sticky sludge.

Magnavox installed that deck in their top end console stereos back in that era. I have 2 of them from Magnavox Imperial consoles - 1 still in the original restored console'

I remember picking up a brand new pair of metal reels from radio shack. Back in the day. But hard to find blank tape after awhile and parts became extinct but nice to see those memories. Thank you

The belt looks a bit loose or stretched from age, perhaps. Leaving top of the set off while playing was a good move. The speeds were a bit different, it seemed. You seem to favor the Sanyo since it survived destruction, and the music did sound better maybe because of its built in amp.

Even the cheaper idler and belt reel to reel systems sound pretty good.

Very cool comparison. I found (and watched) your other reel videos after finding the same Sears 34401 model. Two weeks later, I scored a bunch of pre recorded tapes from an estate sale. I'm taking my time cleaning and tuning up the player and your videos help.

I was listening to both from my surround sound speakers, and I noticed that the Magnavox sounded to me to have more of a separation of the two channels than the Sears, which sounded more centric. Yes, I noticed the speed difference. But it’s so slight that I wouldn’t call it a deal breaker. In fact, I had to really listen to notice it. If someone were to purchase the Magnavox only, I don’t think that they would really notice it. They would probably chalk it up to the fact that all analog players (including record players) are never exactly the same speed as what they were recorded at. Yes, I can hear the audiophile “experts” try to convince me that’s not true. But unless they can prove to me that we live in a perfect world where everything works perfectly, they don’t have a leg to stand on-but they’d rather die first than admit it.
Anyway, please continue to post these comparison videos! It’s nice to see how things stack up against each other.

Could the speed difference be due to the wrench use?

A friend gave me a copy of that Sears unit. I already had a Panasonic unit my parents bought I think around 1970 or so. I was deemed old enough to use it in the early 80s and used it a lot back then, there was also a box of tapes, including some blank Scotch tapes and I used them... doing all kinds of mucking around with sound on it. Now my parents also had a dozen or two pre-recorded tapes from the 60s... I did try to listen to them at one point, but I found out often the quality of the Scotch blank tapes was much better than the prerecorded tapes, which were so fragile that sometimes you could not even wind them. Most of them were discarded as useless. I sold some of them to a collector in the late 90s through eBay, but I felt guilty because I knew how fragile they could be, but I did list them as such.
I don't know if this applies to your two decks, but I learned from Dad's old Panasonic RS790S deck... regarding preserving the drive belt. It has a HUGE drive belt, similar but larger than the one you flipped back in place. In my case, it was the largest one they electronics parts store listed, because I did have to buy one, and it was a PITA to install... back in the mid 80s. That particular deck should never be stored in any speed but 1 7/8 because the belt is stretched the least at that speed. Also, you never change the tape speed unless the unit is on and electric motor is running.
As for the music you played, that's hilarious. None of the tapes my parents had were of that genre, however in their box of 45s that were handed down to us in the mid 70s.... was the single that started that whole genre of music, Quiet Village by Martin Denny... a disc me and my little brother played a lot back in the 70s, we wore that thing out.

Sanyo used to be a part of the Matsushita, which is now Panasonic Company. Sanyo was the more budget division. Learned a lot about that from my work in retail with some electronic stuff.Read interesting article in Wikipedia.

Nice interesting video. I got the open reel bug in 1982. Bought a Teac X-3 deck. Still use it on occasion. I like the nice tight tape pak when FF or Rew. Good specs and fidelity at the 7.5 ips and better than cassettes at 3.75 ips. I like using a Pioneer RG-2 expander with tape for improved dynamic range. Most of my tapes are homemade with Maxell UD 35-90, some TDK Audua. Only pre-recorded tape is Camelot, Broadway version. Swell sound and old fashioned long playing at 3.75 ips. Thanks for posting. Paid $329 for the X-3 with dust cover on August 27, 1982.

Yes,there is a “resurgence” in RTR tape machines-the machines sold today at CRAZY prices to “audiophiles” are reworked Tascam RTR machines previously used in the broadcast industry. The company that sells these machines-United Home Audio reworks and retires the PB amps and they replace the power supplies. Remember when Broadcasters General Store sold the Tascam machines for like 9k each. UA sells them for 25 to almost 100 k!! The tapes are on 10” NAB hub reels at 15 IPS and run for 500bucks each.like how the decks tested here are for the common guy. I have some broadcast machines-Magnecord and Ontari. Otari was a competitor to Tascam-both are equal in quality.

Personally,I liked the msgnavox better. I still use rtr...I just won't pay the insane prices that they get for old prerecorded tape. I think, through proper amplification the Soundstage and imaging would have been much superior on the magna of than on the sears...there are differences in the equalization curves on the two decks, as well as in the internal amplification on the sears...all things considered, I still feel the medium is far superior to many of today's formats and I'm happy to see a resurgence in interest in tape as a rule. Thank you

7:56 Cool, an Arthur Lyman 'Taboo' album on reel-to-reel. I have that same album on LP as well as 'Taboo Vol. 2' (really great with shrunken heads on the cover), 'Pele', 'Hawaiian Sunset', etc.
I'm a huge fan of exotica/Tiki/Hawaiiana albums by Les Baxter, Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, The Gene Rains Group, Robert Drasnin (his first album 'Taboo' or 'Percussion Exotique' is really great), etc. :)

I am with you, a well recorded R2R recorded at 7 1/2" per second is the best format ever IMHO. The problem however is with the machines that are crazy hard & expensive to keep running, let alone in tip top working order.

The Sears / Sanyo sounded fuller, and it ran slower than the Magnavox. That is not to say that the Magnavox was the correct spped, just faster.

So, I did a thing and picked up a Sony TC-600 on Facebook Market today for $50. Plugged into power, runs forwards and rewinds. Take up reel seems a bit stiff, hopefully it will loosen up easily enough. Haven’t had a chance to hook up speakers or headphones yet, but I think I might have found a treasure. (Besides my wife.)

Don't give up on that machine- am sure some of your contacts may be able to help. Well done for finding tapes in the charity shops- I have only ever found one in such a shop ( Louis Armstrong,). My 3 r2r machines are all awaiting repair/ service at present but I will persevere. ( The chap who fixes my audio prefers to fix Revox or Teac machines do I mat be stuffed). Let us know if you get the machine sorted.

Shame about the Sears/Sanyo (S/S) deck.....
I think overall I preferred the sound of the Magnavox/Panasonic (M/P); it sounded to me a more 'full' and lively presentation.
Not knowing the music, it was hard to tell if the S/S was slow, or whether the M/P was playing fast! It just sounded a little 'draggy' and under-pitched, on the S/S! It'd be interesting to run a test-tone tape through both decks......
At 20:44 you can see the little metal restrainer jump off the top of the reel and drop into the cabinet.....

I don't have a R2R tape deck, but I agree with you on the tape format. Especially with chrome tape. With all of the developments as far as tapes go (XDR, SR, LH, Digalog) it is, in my estimation, the best sound possible.
