  • Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks again have one of the best offenses in the NBA, but this year it's been a slightly different approach from Coach Mike Budenholzer. In this segment from the Thinking Basketball podcast, Ben and Cody discuss Jrue Holiday's 2022 All-Star level season, the Bucks Big 3 with Khris Middleton, and the variety in Milwaukee's offense that has them performing so well.

If yall want to see how good the Bucks really are, go watch the Bucks vs Bulls game from March 22. See how the Bucks make a substitution every 3mins and keep bodies fresh, due to how deep their bench go. Observe how they can seamlessly go from a Giannis at pf lineup, to a Giannis at center, then to a Giannis at sf lineup with Bobby, Brook, or Serge combo in. It's like a combination from the old-school big man lineup and nowadays small ball lineup. It's something completely knew like a hybrid of the two. A cross between the Cavs and the Warriors. And to even make this more lethal, everyone on the team from the 1st to 13th roster spot can shoot 3s. The 2 worst being Giannis and probably Serge lmaoo. And Giannis shooting above 30% and Serge shooting 35%. Also notice how every player is literally 3&d, with the worst defender on the team probably being Grayson Allen, who by no means is a lackluster defender. They got the perfect mesh of perimeter defenders and interior defenders, which Jrue, Khris, Wes Mathews, Javon Carter, Grayson, Pat C, and Brook, Giannis, Serge, Bobby. I'm telling you watch the Bucks vs Bulls game from the 22nd, and you'll see the difference between a championship hopeful and a contender/favorite. And not to mention Khris Middleton didn't even play that game, which only adds to how deep the team is when watching that game.

@matisha hopkins I like your takeaway from what I said and the Bucks as a whole. But I think that the reason why we struggle on defense is almost all the way due to the loss of Brook. Losing Brook forced Giannis to play center and sometimes hold larger centers like Gobert. A lineup of Giannis and Bobby is not a good one imo due to the fact that Giannis can't really be in a help defense position, as Bobby is too small for a lot of top centers. So that alone compromises defensive rebounds and p&r defense, which was our best attribute with Brook in...allowing him to sink low on coverage. Brook being out also means Bobby as a starter which fucks up our bench frontcourt. For most of the season we didn't have a bench center, and if we did it was a poor defensive one, like Boogie or Mamu in some cases. This is why our 3rd quarter defense is atrocious, because the 3rd is usually a quarter for the bench. This why teams blow leads, because their bench is bad. 3rd quarter allows the starters to rest up for the 4th quarter. But going forward, I believe we will elevate to a level never seen by a team before. Small ball, 3 bigs lineups, offense defense, it's gonna be crazy.

I really felt Jrue deserved the all-star nod over K-Midd. He's a walking bucket, but he wasn't as consistent throughout the first half as Jrue was. His turnover ratio and defense were not his best, while Jrue has been stellar all year long and has been the most decisive player stopping opposing teams runs in the 4th while being both a closer and a distributor.

When Bud got to Milwaukee, there were a lot of NBA caliber players, but you couldn't say that all of the Top 8 were Playoff quality.
Sets will bog down when you have Irsan instead of Portis. Connaughton took a big jump last year.
Grayson Allen isn't as good defensively as Donte, but he doesn't gamble and is better offensively.
Jrue is a big step up from Bledsoe. Bledsoe's overall game would get worse if his shot wasn't falling, which added to the problem.
All those individual gains add up and support each other.

@@kingjaydex7464 Steph is a better scorer and shooter not passer. Jrue is underatted passer and he already had 9APG seasons in the past. If anything it's passing where Steph isn't that good (still above average) but it doesn't really matter because of how good his main strengths are. Both Curry and Holiday play in unselfish systems that doesn't transition into much assists because Bucks create as much offence through Giannis and Middleton as ball handlers as they do with Jrue and Curry plays tons of off ball because it's his and team's really big strength. Also both would average much more assist if they played in more iso ball based teams.

This was amazing. And people freak out when I say that Giannis would be in some teams just a screen and roll guy. Phoenix would never let him do his dribbling five out.
Giannis is lucky that Jrue and Khris are real, low maintenance ballers and he can rely on them when it matters. Those points don't get brought up enough.

I have always been only following my favorite players and don't being really attached to the teams when they moves on but I don't understand gatekeepers both: team supporting that used to insult me as bandwagonner and player supporting like you. Just like people being into teams in the end of the day means nothing so does you supporting your favorite players. If you think about it league titles and mvps mean nothing as well but who cares. Let people like what they like without shoving your annoying opinion what else should do or feel up everyone's throat.
