@@BrennanDipippo I mean, it's not that he's passing, it's the way the offense is getting run around him. Playing further out to threaten the ranged shot, running handoff loops and setting up pick and rolls, and utilizing Joel as a passing hub rather than a receiving scorer is basically exactly what Jokic is doing on the Nuggets. Given how different they looked before, it's fascinating how much their playstyles have started to converge.

Raptors fan here. While I'd rather our division rival not dominate us, I am rooting for the 76ers just to remind people Nick Nurse is an amazing coach so long as you provide him the right personnel. The Raptors have great starters but they've lacked depth and Nurse wasn't the best at making rotations sans Kyle Lowry

@@Mavkorcan you blame him though our bench was so fucking terrible the last couple of years. Look when he actually a team with depth (from 2018 to the bubble team) he never played the starters 40+ minutes. Although that’s bad for developing players that’s why we got rid of him.
Nurse went pretty cynical playing the starters into the absolute ground and relying on total iso to prevent turnovers and try to win with defense. I say cynical because he really didn’t believe any of the pieces on the bench could be developed, or that the starters had the IQ for any half court sets that weren’t just put the ball in Fred or Pascal’s hands and hope ..
He’s a great Xs and Os guy most of the time (especially on defense), but a zero level development coach .. and I think he got sick of the Raptors other than maybe wanting to help Fred out in the big contact year.
It is what it is, still rooting for the guy a bit, but it’s very hard when he’s coaching Philly 😂

As a Raptors fan, I am sad to see Nurse coaching the Sixers. Those who called for his firing from Toronto NEVER appreciated just how good of a coach he IS!
Nurse is a great championship coach. He excell in creative plays and outside the box thinking. But he is not a development coach. Last 2 raptors season proved that. He is a ty lue type coach. Dont get me wrong, he is a great coach, but not what raptors need.
@@ignatiusiswaradatta6052 i disagree. i think the Raptors were building a very unusual team -- i.e., there's only so many 6'7 - 6'9 guys you can have in the line-up. Yes, having inter-changeable pieces helps with switching, but good teams also need role players who can specialize in only a certain skill set. Raptors don't have that. And forcing Barnes to be the #1 option on offense is not going to work out because I believe that's not who he is...
I agree. He is an excellent coach, sad to see him gone but he deserves to coach a contending team.

In the NFL, if a team starts middling they bench the QB, fire the GM, change offensive coordinator, etc. In the NBA, teams just blame the coach before theyll ever get rid of any star players because theres this belief that all coaches in the NBA are replaceable, which is nonsense with coaches like Nurse. Raptors wont have a coach that good for a long long long time
We can't use Harden to scapegoat Doc Rivers. The coaching change was just as big if not bigger.

This is the part I'm most curious about.
The change in Embiid's assist numbers this season is no coincidence! Nurse offense is allowing him to tap into other parts of his game and get the whole team involved while still getting his buckets, and when you think about how bad iso scoring strategies are in the playoffs, they have their best odds of going all the way this season. I'm not even close to a Philly fan, but it's obvious to me that right now they're the best in the East with this shift plus the Maxey leap
Iso is great in the playoffs. Just ask MJ, Kobe, KD, Lebron, etc... The problem is when its your entire offense. Doesnt help when embiid gets injured every playoffs and youre relying on him to do everything on offense while carrying linups full of defensive liabilities

But when everyone else is getting locked up and double teamed and put in tough situations sometimes you just need the guy who can get you the bucket. It’s the equivalent of a closer. In tight games you need ISO to close them out.
more specifically iso being the primary offense sucks in the playoffs. MJ passing was underrated and some timely swings to Steve Kerr paid dividends man

As a Sixers fan, the answer is an resounding yes. Losing Harden gave Maxey room to grow into a star as well as getting some playmaking reps in for Embiid. Although I gotta admit, Nick Nurse deserves a lot of credit for his creative schemes too. A Doc Rivers lead Hardenless Sixers wouldn't look nearly as good.

I know Doc Rivers would do a better job with the Sixers with both Harden and Embiid sitting than with them playing, he's always choked with good teams and overachieved with bad teams

Don't let his 1 ring with a stacked Celtics team and multiple Finals appearances with them fool you that his highs were better than his lows. Dude always got punked against better coaches in the playoffs in BOTH conferences.
Nurse is a top 4 coach in the association, he allows embiid to be doubled and makes the offense unpredictable👌

when Nick Nurse came available I wanted the Celtics to pick him and have Mazzulla step back into the assistant role. I like Joe, I just think he's outclassed by the truly great coaches in the League. In a 7-game series, even as a Celtics fan, knowing we've owned them for all of Embiid's career, the Nurse advantage over Joe scares me!

This is what happens when you actually got a coach who can run plays and not just tell your players "Let's go guys, we can do this!". They also got rid of a retirement home player who can't do anything offensively.
You would be surprised how much NBA fans neglect coaching... Hell, even Shaq makes them seem like cheerleaders and/or social workers.

I was a fan of Nick Nurse coming in as 76ers fan, this dude is a good coach no doubt just based off his early coaching success especially that raptors champ run
Rivers is just ineffective as a coach, Nurse is quite something he figured out stuff Rivers can only dream of doing
Rivers made bad decisions on the rotations off the bench and refused to play certain guys who couldve contributed more, but the system of offense wasn't Doc's design nor his choice. That was a product of acquiring Harden, who demands his own style of offense that caters to his strengths, ball handling and facilitating off of penetration or 1 on 1.
James Charmin's entire playstyle leaves no room for a coach to add adjustments that don't involve some form of isolation play. So anything that depends on effective ball movement+cutting without the ball, or any time where it'd be ideal to push transistion scoring, are important options that the coach can't employ without accepting James as useless, or when he's not on the floor. Even if hed go with a different offense while Charmin rests, his other players would have no way to get into a rhythm since he's never out for that long and then they go back right back to Charmin's system and the offense stagnates when facing excellent defense

People are seriously underestimating how much of an impact getting rid of Grandpa Tucker has had on the offense, watching him play for 20 minutes to take 2 shots and score 3 points was soul sucking.

The Sixers could have announced M. Night Shyamalan as the new HC and I would have been ecstatic.
Nick Nurse coach of the year by far. Hes a top 3 coach for sure. This teams effort is what i see most. Sprinting on a fastbreak or to get back on defense, we rebound as a team. Our effort on rotations is insane. So glad we got rid of Harden
Great video and i'm glad you mentioned how similar Embiid's game is to Jokic's this season. Last year, 90% of the offense was Harden/Embiid PnR or Embiid ISO which is great offense in the regular season, but in the playoffs you need all 5 guys contributing or at least being threats to score. There were games last season where the Sixers offense looked better when Embiid sat, simply because there was a lot more ball movement instead of just feeding him the ball to score.
You can talk about getting rid of Doc, getting rid of Harden or Nurse bringing in something new...but to me, just surrounding Embiid with 4 other guys who can all "Dribble,Drive and Shoot" is a huge improvement. On top of that, all 4 other players do something off-ball whether it's set screens or cut to the lane, whereas last year the other 3 guys mostly watched Embiid/Harden from the perimeter. The Embiid-Maxey DHO sets are pretty similar to when young Embiid ran them with JJ Reddick
mirroring the heliocentric, unselfish offense of the nuggets is absolutely brilliant and makes for a potentially interesting finals matchup. great coaching

Read the defense, react accordingly, cut or drive. Imagine if Maxey was as big and athletic as MJ or Pippen. Tobi is also flourishing again. They can take the Bucks in the ECF like this.

Coaching makes such a difference. Nick has been a coach in all levels, in multiple countries, for decades. The man coaches.
Philly has been my East team ever since drafting JoJo, and I sat through some HORRIBLE coaching with disgusting spacing.
Watching this team play this year brings me so much joy. It feels like a miracle.
You see so much uninspiring coaching, in this league it is unfathomable. I know it is a players league and elite talent often beats any scheme and get make something out of nothing on offence... BUT that is not an excuse for most of the coaches to be that far away from guys like Nurse and Spoelstra. Last year is a clear example, Spoelstra legit out coached his way to the finals.
Also Dame is my favorite player and ffs watching the Bucks offense legit makes me angry. What a terrible looking offense. The team right now is 100% carried by Giannis greatness, and some good games by Dame here and there.
Bucks might have messed up on passing over Nick Nurse as a Head Choach. And I agree Erik Spoelstra did out choach everyone in the east last year.

Hi, french guy (and Jokic fan) here ! Even if I had almost no dou bt about it, see also how glue guys like Nico Batum (and Roco) bring value to the team they are in. Nico is the perfect vet to fill holes, will defend smart and hard, is long, and is a good shooter to space the floor even more...

This type of offense reminds me of how the Dolphins use Tyreek Hill with pre-snap motions. You've got Jo playing QB from the top of the key or break and Maxey running into hand-offs or pitches with speed towards the cup. Really getting the best out of Maxey's energy and versatility.
Is there a trend or at least significance to the burgeoning dominance of bigs within the modern 5-out systems? Thinking about Embiid, Jokic, Wemby, Chet, Minnesota's "2-bigs" approach, etc. If there's something there, I'd be interested in seeing your analysis of it!
I think it is a skills catch up. In the 2010s, first we got stretch bigs, just spacing out to the 3pt. line. It felt like a neutering of the big man concept. Then we got small ball, exemplified by the Warriors playing Draymond at the 5.
Only now, in the 2020s, are we getting skilled big men, and the schemes to capitalize on them. If your center can shoot, drive, and pass from the perimeter, then you can play 5 out without giving up a true center.
Size will always matter in BBall, and just like players imitated Curry and MJ, big men are and should be imitating Jokic.
Running the offense through playmaking/screening bigs have been around with the 2010s. Horford was a huge pickup for the Celtics in 2016 which helped their offense do well with Isaiah Thomas overachieve. When healthy Joakim Noah was also a good connective passer and a transition playmaker. Hell the 2014 draft produced not only Jokic and Embiid as capable big man passers, but also Nurkic who has been fighting injuries for part of his career. Before Steph was taking screen games from Draymond, he was primarily doing it with Bogut who was a solid passer in those situations. Not to mention the Heat's key transition from dumping Whiteside to taking a chance of Bam's playmaking. I do think the NBA in the 2010s has empowered bigs or even big wing types to have that all around game along with Jokic's overall influence.
There have been coaching adaptations, but I think a lot of it is just... better bigs happening to come of age at this time and being able to stay on the court. There was a really bad run of big man luck in the late 2000s/early 2010s.
If you swapped Greg Oden and Kevin Durant's health, and assumed whichever of the two remained healthy would reach their full potential, we'd probably be talking about how no one challenged Oden's 2010s dominance, rather than how there wasn't any great big man play. If Boogie Cousins had been able to get along with his coaches, or if Sacramento hadn't fired the one coach he liked almost immediately, we'd be talking about his unchallenged run, albeit with more of a caveat about him being a bad defender. If Kristaps Porzingis had been healthier/had more killer instinct. If Anthony Davis had wanted to play center, and been healthier/on better teams.
Rudy Gobert was the best overall center in the 2010s and while I love his game, he wasn't going to have an offense built around him.
Embiid is considerably better than peak Davis (and also, actually wants to play the 5). Jokic is better still, an all-time level player. Either would've been league-warping in any era.
As a Raptors fan, I am very familiar with Nurse's coaching style :) I hope the 76ers are able to get far under his reign.

Correct. Having a playmaker who can score at all three levels and is willing to move off ball is certainly a lot better than running Harden and Embiid pick and rolls all game.
And he’s doing it without having himself as a two, one less weapon than Harden
he's not really replacing harden's role. embiid did in a way when he became the focal point of the offense at the top of the key. maxey's current role is uniquely his own.
lets see him drop 45 and a game winner with no embiid vs celtics nd takes them to 7 first with embiid playing average frst b4 we start making these assumptions...

I know I would love to have a better idea of how coaches impact the game because I feel like adjustments are hard for people to notice without knowing what to look for. I've seen Philly's offense light up when Maxey was involved in Embiid handoffs last season but for some reason Doc REFUSED to use it more often. Now with Nurse as the head coach, the Embiid+Maxey pairing almost feels like the Eastern Conference's version of Sabonis+Fox or Jokic+Murray

Well, Doc also powered Embiid, he also realize Maxey's biggest value is when he moves fast, and Doc till this day is the only coach who knows how to use Harris, as a team leader Doc isn't bad, his problem is at coaching, Doc doesn't coach really, he didn't run daily routines enough, and he didn't know how to draw tactics when it's needed, these are what Nick Nurse best at, this team is already good enough. And frankly, "move Embiid to the 3pt line" is just another way to say "how to take the ball away without actually taking away from your high temper star player"
Goes to show bad coaching can often be seen as a player underperforming... *cough* because I would never say Embiid was Ayton on PEDS...

I think they lack offensive power when it comes to the play-off time but they definitely made a few upgrades from the recent season - firing Doc and moving away Tucker were the most important ones. I hope Kelly will be fine after the all-star break because he was such a nice fit. I'm intrigued for whom (not LaVine please) they can trade, if they would like to make a hard push for a championship.

Have you been watching🤔 they are one of the top scoring teams in the league, and multiple times they have four people that have scored over twenty. Melton has been on 🔥 from 3 since Kelly got hurt! I think we have more than enough scoring and our bench is the best in the NBA!

@@vladimirjackson1272 Roster talent wise still pales back to what the Sixers assembled in 2019. Plus they can still do all that ball movement stuff with a shooter like Reddick, an available Simmons who can still pass/defend and even the luxury of having Jimmy Butler who could attack the basket when Embiid was shackled by an old Marc Gasol. Scheme/designs are good to elevate base line talent. But better overall talent can take schemes and make them even more consistent in a playoff setting.
@t4d0W Jimmy Butler is a 1 trick pony! He is very limited offensively, but his heart is what makes the difference! Not to mention, Jimmy cant shoot for shyt! I'll take my chances with what we have! Don't want Levine either cause he is a streaky shooter and plays no defense. I'll keep Tobias cause he's bigger, playing great, and is a mismatch on most nights!

I've dreamed of making my own team like this. Give the center the ball at the top of the key and have him make decisions out of the pick and roll as the roller/popper.
DeAnthony Melton made 3 of his 6 attempts behind the 3-point line against the Lakers. In combination with Tyrese Maxey's 5 for 12 at 3-pointers and Nic Batum's 2 for 3 at 3-pointers. Surrounding Joel Embid (2 for 3 at 3-pointers himself against the Lakers).

seeing Harris play his kind of game instead of just a spot up shooter is a good thing. Now, the 76ers are a 5 man team instead of just Jojo and the Beard.
I think that is the current meta in NBA basketball: A center who can make plays who usually starts outside the perimeter or the top of the key, a lead guard who is great with downhill plays, and the other guys being cutters or floor spacers.
I always thought the future of basketball is 1 super talented big who can do it all and 4 guard / forwards around him.
the Big stand at the top of the 3 point line and acts like a "QB", passing it to 4 moving wings who act like WR's. no one has to dribble, just set picks and cut. eventually someone will get open just like the NFL.
Instead of having 3.5 seconds to hit a WR you have 20 second to hit a moving guard for the shot. if you put too much pressure on the big, he can just drive to the bucket himself.
embid could easily become such a big who can either create for himself or pass to 4 wings in a motion offense. and because of modern 5 out, no post up basketball, the lane is always open and basically embid is playing 1 on 1 against small, slower bigs who have no help behind them. if help comes from a sagging player then someone is open for the 3

As a Celtics fan, I am scared of the 76ers. The speed of Maxey in the pick and roll combined with the scoring capabilities of Embiid is tough to gameplay against. However, I think what the C’s have done putting Holiday in Embiid to make a switch easier against Maxey is interesting. Maybe if Porzingis can provide good enough help defense at the rim to disincentivize an Embiid drive, we could see how to stop this 6er offense.
looks like putting Horford on Embiid is still the best option for the Celtics, the next best is to have Holiday on him and have a rim protecting big roaming in the paint.

@@Luka77Legend I've seen Horford's scouting profile on DraftExpress and one of the strengths that scouts endlessly praised about him is his low post defense. Watching him play on the Hawks and Celtics also included many plays where he positioned himself perfectly to funnel his man into the help or make a great contest on the shot. He's one of a few players that Embiid and Jokic can't consistently bully in the low post. Jokic has shown the ability to make perfect passes out of Horford's coverage however, and this is the season that Embiid should learn that skill

Only thing I'm scared with the Celtics in the playoffs is Mazzulla's lackluster coaching. Despite all that talent he's working with, he will find a way to give Nurse key games in the playoffs. And rely too hard on outside shooting while not keeping them accountable on defense.
Am I the only one who remembers watching Embiid and JJ two man actions? This isn't really new. Embiid was a great handoff hub *5 years ago* . Except he's better at basketball now and Maxey can not only shoot like JJ but he can also get downhill to finish and pass.
This is exactly why I thought Haliburton made more sense as a trade target than Harden because the best offense around Joel has always been something like this where 1) the defense can't target him because he's moving around and 2) it minimizes the complexity of his passing reads by using him in hand offs versus having to read doubles and map the floor.
Also he's always been very deliberate in isolations -- most wings are and he's a 7' wing when he has the ball -- and this style of whirring offense essentially removes that complication. And finally, like Jokic and Sabonis, he is gargantuan and sets bone crushing screens and is really hard to get around.

As a Raptors fan, Nick Nurse is an excellent coach when he has competent players, he's the perfect coach to get an already good team over the hump to win a championship

I give the Sixers a ton of credit. They had a James Harden problem (which is now an LA Clippers problem) and I guarantee Nurse said, 'Hey, let him go. I can make us a better team by using Maxey and Harris to compliment Embiid.' It is much the same thing he did in Toronto by using Siakam and Lowry to compliment Leonard on their way to the NBA title. I am not going to sit here and say Harden sucks (although I think his scoring numbers will never really rebound), but let's face it ... his past history suggests he is not the type of player who gets it done in the post season. I think Philly is better not because Harden is gone, but because they now have a chance to find out if Maxey and/or Harris can be 'The Man' when it counts (I left off Embiid because he had his chances and failed or got injured. He could still prove that line of thinking is wrong, but we will see). If no one can step up, then the team is going to have to dump the process (within reason) and find 'The Man' at whatever cost if they want to win sooner rather than later. OH!!! And let's try to keep Embiid close to the basket. He is not a good 3-point shooter and really should leave that to other players.

This is just so smart but requires a lot of coaching. Embiid didn't suddenly discover how to pass like Jokic. But anyone can run a pick and roll with enough coaching and this is essentially inverting the pick and roll, turn it into a 3 man game where embiid knows who he can pass/handoff to if he decides not to attack the basket or shoot. Less physical work and easier than isoball.
no hate to Harden. Best outcome occurred. he could have left for nothing and instead forcing his way out made sure they didn't sign him to a ridiculous contract and they got something for him, and Maxey also absorbed his ridiculous step back 3. Also a lot of this is Nurse, a lot of it Harden, but also a lot of it is not having PJ Tucker on the floor.

This should be an even bigger deal for Sixers fans. They sat through talented rosters with not only Doc on the sidelines, but frikin Brett Brown. Nurse has certainly showed in his career that he's done less with more. But if the goal is the Finals, Sixers FO should give Nurse a LOT more to work with.

As a diehard Celtics fan who enjoys good basketball…..Philly this year plays good basketball. I love Maxey and hopefully we get a great series against them in the playoffs (with the Cs winning of course 😂)

Embiid is < Jokic but this is still a breath of fresh air IMO. They need one more piece. Not saying big three but they need a guy to get minutes and play defense. Plus with the death of "time management" the teams that can consistently move the ball quickly are going to thrive. These old teams will all be out of gas.
I mean if they are gonna copy the Nuggets, they might as well get the role players right. They need an Aaron Gordon like big wing whose versatile and can get above the rim scoring looks so its not just Embiid screening with guards. They need good veteran 3&D players who can help switch Embiid off unfavorable matchups in the playoffs. I hear Bruce Brown was signed to a friendly 2 yr/ 22 million deal by the Pacers. If the Pacers are still under .500 by January, maybe Morey should make the call.

@@JBYHIFI I think a scrappy small back court scoring team like the Hawks/Cavs is a good test for this years' Sixers as a round one opponent. Its always a good metric for efficiency if the Sixers as a whole can play to all their strengths while taking away those teams' options.

Yeah Nurse basically just turned them into the nuggets east in terms of playstyle. Even down to Tobias taking smaller guards down to the post on switches and allowing Embiid to throw the entry just like Gordon and Jokic. As a nuggets fan it's damn smart. I don't think Embiid can pass like Jokic though, on the other side Jokic isn't Embiid on the defensive end. But regardless, until Embiid brings his punk ass back to Denver I don't wanna hear it.

If you watched the Nuggets playoff run last season, Jokic certainly wasn't like Embiid on the defensive end. Because he played the drop coverage, the screen games and the switches on smaller players better than I've ever seen Embiid. All the way to win a chip. Stay watching regular season ball scrub!

I believe that Kawhi and PG have a PO each this off-season. There's no guarantee they r staying with the clips or together.
Nick Nurse does well with elite athletes plus to some level he is good at developing players.
