    I waited 2 years for Starlink in my remote area. Paid 599 and paying 120 since I started 14 months ago. It was, and is very reasonable as far as I’m concerned. Reductions in the monthly fee? Sure, I’d love to see it, I think 99/month would work well for all.

      I used to work on Jan Mayen in the Arctic, 20 years ago we had a 64kbit connction with >500ms latency.
      Now they have both Starlink and Oneweb. It has been a total game changer.

    20 miles SW of Seattle ... lucky if it gets over 100mb down / mostly between 50 and 75 now [daytime hours to 11pm] - upload is all over the place - 4 to 25 - latency is all over the place too. I seem to get one Starlink update a week now. WHY? you know THE WHY? thanks for the videos Joseph - #1 source of dependable information about starlink🤙

    The improvement by moving the sats lower is just two milliseconds or so, but you also will get a better signal strength and that means smaller portable dishes, and improved signals to cellphones. The infrastructure on the ground is what can shave off even more latency.

    Compared to the late 2022 waitlist times, the service has definitely getting better over time. I've been getting consistent 150 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up with average latency in the upper 20's during Netflix hour. I would love to see them up their upload speed game maybe somewhere in the 50's? Just having the ability to get non-terrestrial broadband just about anywhere around the world just by pointing dishy towards the clear view of the sky and it takes it from there is quite amazing.

    With closer POP stations will also help with location as well. I am in SW FL and my station is located out of Atlanta, GA like you said yours is & it would be nice to have a location of close to my area and not in GA. Shortly after I got Starlink my location changed for about a week to Miami, FL but after an update it went back to Atlanta, GA. When it was in Miami I noticed a nice little bump in speeds and latency.
    Do you think we will get a POP station in FL to help with location and latency? I hops so....

    Excellent video today on starlink speeds and their goals for improving latency. We live in a rural area in southern Indiana. My download speeds lately have been around 100 mbs and upload between 10 and 20 mbs. Latency between 30 and 40. This afternoon however download was only about 50 mbs for 3 tests, upload was 10 to 20 mbs and latency was 30 to 40 msec. Disappointed with low download today but I haven't seen it that low for several months. I've never seen download over 150 mbs or upload over 25 mbs or latency below 25. Could be the fewer number of satellites traversing our part of the country? And congestion that brings. But we are still pleased with starlink! Thanks for your videos!

    Even though I'm not a starlink customer I'm still keeping an eye on its progress because it's getting better and well if it gets better than my fiber where it's faster down and up plus has a really low latency ping then I might switch over unless Google fiber finally gets here which they sent me an email saying they've started expanding again and they are coming to my area just don't know when

    The main improvements I have noticed is latency improvements. Starlink has become significantly more enjoyable for gaming. Specifically rocket league seems to be really sensitive to latency and starlink was nearly unplayable for the first year of owning it. Now I can at least play and its fine about 85% of the time. My speeds have been staying roughly the same. Generally around the 100mbps mark. Although there are times when downloads go near 300.

  • @ameador01
    @ameador01 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You have a logic error in saying that latency is significantly impacted by your base station being 700 miles away. Assuming the sat is above and likely somewhere in between your terminal and the based stations, just calculate the difference in distance/time for the sat to communicate with either. You're only talking about a difference of a ms or 2. The bulk of the latency is probably in the sats themselves (data processing and on board network) - and most likely at the ground stations themselves.
    I run a WISP. My systems only add a few ms in latency - but my fiber uplink adds 15 to 20ms. Thisnis forna fiber DIA. Nothing I can do to improve that without some other fiber upstream - which I don't have access to. Now, I'm sure Starlink is using ground station locations that have optimal fiber uplinks in terms of latency - but - maybe not? I can't imagine the sat's on board networks are adding much latency - but perhaps the older sats with the fast customer acquisition is overwhelming them and adding more latency than preferred - thus the effort to improve the newer sats to battle this issue. Maybe a similar issue at the ground stations, but obviously a much cheaper easier fix than new sats. In any case - distance to ground stations in relation to customer terminals really should have barely any impact. Radio comms from sat to ground vs laser comms between sats will literally add more latency to the net traffic as no matter what it still has to travel from terminal to sat(s) to ground terminal and back. Throw in more sats in that path, and it will add more latency. The only way that will improve latency will be by bypassing slower/congested ground stations with ones that are faster/less congested but only if the added sat to sat latency is less than the difference between those ground stations.

Back in Tetris days, I got carpal tunnel... and that was the end of that. ;-) I'm a retired software dev who worked on state of the art stuff, which basically means stuff was dumped on me that had never been done before so there was nobody to ask for help... and if you don't succeed, the company fails (and... thanks alot! boss... for the intense and constant sink or swim pressure).
      Now... writing games... that would be fun. ;-)

      Infinite for the most part.. When looking at a diagram of 6000 satellite orbiting around the planet it looks like there is no more room. If they were to show the exact same image ( TO SCALE) the satellite would be smaller than a single pixel, not even viewable as to the magnitude of space from LEO to GEO.. Hope that helps.

    Hey J, subscriber here, love the channel. I live in the appalachian mountains and I have both a Starlink gen 2 and gen 3 system on the property in different locations and I just can’t find any place that I don’t get obstructions even though I seem to have an open sky. I’ve heard from others that this is a common problem. Is there anything I can do?

      @gstar7686 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Starlink requires a clear sky to the north. If the app shows obstructions then you either need to cut some trees or get the dish up higher.

      We had a channel member place his Starlink at the top of a 70+ foot tree and it worked amazingly well.

    Speed has decreased to about 20 download, 9 to 10 upload, and definitely lower latency running around 30, but definitely slower download speeds.

    My download speeds have gotten slower. My upload speeds have gotten staggered improvements. My latency has been unchanged and my ping has become better. My jitter is maintaining 7.
    So there are other factors to consider but this is my current setups experience.

    Speaking of the terrestrial aspects of internet performance, I assume ATT copper lines comprise the majority of that network and we know how unreliable that is.

    I misdiagnosed my starlink performance. When I check my speed and everything on my phone it was fine. But on my old Smart TV it seemed to be lagging,pixelating. Turns out that my old LG Smart TV has not updated in many years . Apparently it's obsolete. So this could be misconstrued to be a problem with the starlink when in fact it's not. If anybody knows how to update of perfectly working LG Smart TV. I'm all ears.

    FINE!, But now ask the questions, WHY would anyone switch to starlink besides the ones that have no other option...of course. Now I get 646 mb download and 514 upload with 5 to 6 ms latency....with half the price of starlink...Don't get me wrong, I like all thins new Technology, but not up to par with current conditions..

    Hi, slightly off piste question. We are hearing that Elon is looking to block Apple device on the Starlink service. Don’t believe this but have to ask. Is this something that you guys have heard about?

    • @jcristina
      @jcristina  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Honestly.. It has to do with Apple forcing their AI into all their product which is a conflict to "ELON" privacy policy.. Not sure how this will play out.. I'll be watching.
