They definitely got out of control price wise. That was about the time I ditched them. More cost and they got too complex for me to enjoy them. Very fiddly imo.
I really like the idea of Legends scale & space saving, as someone who rents. I even bought one thinking it’ll be the start of my Legends journey…BUT when holding a Legends & a Masterpiece Optimus in each hand, there was no contest with the MP in my eyes. The paint, size & the heft stands out when holding them, you also feel like you have to be more careful with them, because Legends - rightly or wrongly - makes me think Hasbro main line sizes & less premium. My goal is to only collect my favourite MP characters in 2 x 6ft tall glass cabinets (about 75% there). I do find myself still looking at those Legends scale figure from NA & Magic Square & admiring the engineering though, haha.
I've always liked that MP's seem to be the same size in my hands as the G1's were when I was 10 years old. I've bought 1 legends figure and liked it, but it's just not the same.
For me, it really depends on which Legends Scale figures as I collect mainly Masterpieces. I was all in on Magic Square but really hated their use of nylon and lack of paint. NewAge only makes some figures that look good while others not so much. Currently, it's more NewAge and a little bit of Mechfantoys.
There are some amazing Legends class figures out there, but Masterpiece displays a lot better. Bigger figures that you can see from across the room and have some solid preference. When you have a bunch of tiny legends figures on a shelf, it is just visual clutter. As an older collector I prefer purposeful displays and not "look at how much I own" displays. Having said that I do have some nice Legends of my favorite characters. They make nice desk toys, but will likely never be the larger part of my collection because much cheaper mainline figures also can make good desk toys.
I'm getting all 3 scales! CHUG, Legends and masterpiece! And in Legends, getting both MagicSquare AND NewAge lines. I might be a little insane. Or the ADHD is talking. Luckily, my wallet earnings do put a cap on me just getting everything, especially when I still get Lego too. Room, what room?
I started collecting masterpiece figures like 5-6 years ago but eventually sold them all when they got too pricy and took up too much space. A year later I started collecting legends figures. These are less expensive and space consuming than masterpieces and they fit better with my style of collecting. Heck, some figures like Ironhide and Ratchet look better than anything the masterpiece line has produced. Even so, I went on a black friday shopping binge and bought 10 KO masterpiece ark crew members for about $300 in total. Can't beat those prices and they only take up one shelf. But basically you can't go wrong with either line. In the end it all depends on the preferences of the individual collector.
Legends used to feel like a bargain to get a representation of a character. unfortunately those days are over. Now masterpiece ko's and some older third party offerings feel like that.
I miss the days of Legends+ (plus), which was essentially, MFT (and other 'brands') would make figs slightly bigger than legends, but would be between $6-$20 each. Ironically, that middle ground size between a legends and deluxe scale would be a comparable size to the G1 toy 😮😊. I think people that abandoned MP for legends _'ruined'_ the price for consumers of legends scale at that time because they represented a large volume of customers that now quickly/readily backed releases of their continually increasing legends prices. Whether it's because they sold their MP collections and flipped that money, or they were excited about more space to fill the now vacated display areas previously held by their MPs, or a combination... they're the catalyst disrupting the prior balance. 😅 ⚖️ A lot is in the timing. I, at times, wonder what 3P figs would've never been produced, companies not made, etc. had SS86 figs been made a decade or two ago.
I started out collecting masterpiece, but I've gotten more into legends over the past couple years. I was beginning to run out of space and legends scale lets me do more with less (space and money). Magic Square is definitely my go to for the reasons you mentioned (better design/sculpt, slightly larger than Newage). The lack of paint is not a deal breaker for me. Also like that legends offers some bots that are not offered in MP scale and in some cases, they are better. I think the MS Bruticus is the best looking Bruticus in ANY scale. Also, although I didn't pick one up (yet), I really like the Newage Omega Supreme. I also really like the MS Devastator. He is my favorite combiner. I held off on the Toyworld version and am on the fence about which MP version to get. I was initially going to go with Xtransbots ( I have XTB Menasor), but I think Fanstoys looks good. However, based on their track record with previous combiners, I'm just scared of how long it will take and how much it will end up costing.
I have Transform Element, GigaPower, and FansToys. However, Newage is totally out working all three in terms of paint options with emphasis on G1 accuracy. Slowly switching over to Legends.
Legends are intriguing (especially their value proposition), but I started with MP and at this point, it's a bad idea for me to start into a "new" scale. Then, you start to think about what MPs USED to cost and stuff like that, and then legends' value starts to lose its shine. Of course, you're not getting MPs for that price now, but the thought is still there. I'm going to state the obvious I think here, but if MP never existed, then legends are a no-brainer, but they do, so no. Also can I just say how annoying it is to see pictures of a new character coming out, only to discover it's legends? I hate that.
Fewer true things have been said when it comes to Transformers "scale means different things to different people." I only have a few MP figures and they scale really G1 'toon nicely in bot mode but I have a few MP trucks bots with my modern CHUG (SS86, Siege, Earthrise) car bots and they scale closer to real world trucks and cars. The LazyEyeBrow has a nice scale chart on his website I look at quite a lot. I would love to get some more Legends figures but they sell out really quick here in Australia and are very expensive (understandably.)
OOF. Tough for me. I started collecting Legends(Newage) during a MP dry spell in the middle of the pandemic. I thought it would be cool to display my MP figure in bot mode next to their legends scale counterpart in alt mode. I still like this idea for a display but it's A LOT of figures. With how good legends are becoming I'm tossing around the idea of unloading my MP collection except for season one characters and go all in on legends.
I collect both, but only the designs I think are worth it, and prefer newage over magic square but I’m open to the best effort. One problem I have is I don’t have enough time to open every toy I get and some sit misb for years before I get around to opening it. Sometimes I decide to just keep it misb. I recently bought three versions of the newage swoop because I thought they were all so good, but I only,y opened one.
Ultimately when it comes down to is a question of what your taste is. One of the things that I think of is how expensive some of these guys have gotten. A good example of this is that I have a XTB Artfire literally sitting in front of me right now, and I can't imagine how much he is going for right now if you actually wanted to get one. When I get a figure I usually get two. One for show one for blow. I remember he was almost 200 bucks when I did get him (so a total of 400), I can't imagine how much it cost now. I generally like the comic / toy look more than I do the cartoon. I think what is the death nail to the series / transformer collecting is when you only have one style to choose from. But keeps the franchise and collectibility going is having a selection of different genres are styles the choose from. That way people have multiple angles they can go when they want to collect something. One factor too that's usually not addressed, is that things are still like hell in China.... since that's where a majority of these things are made, that's a factor as well. I've got to the point where I started to scan and make my own transformers because there's certain figures I would like, but they're not being made. Or I don't like the style that's being released. I just got myself a earthrise Cliffjumper for example, and I'm reverse engineering it, mixing in some elements from mmc's version of cliffjumper and a little bit of the first MP bumblebee into a design that I like. The nice thing about a lot of the newer technology, especially resin printing is that you can produce some really durable parts now because of advancements in the technology in the chemistry in the new resins. Though it's cheaper to injection mold it. I have a smelter where I can make blanks, but I have yet to come across a CNC that's able to produce molds that I can use in a injection machine. I still say the next step in collecting is collectors actually producing their own figures. In time I see that being a thing....
Legends are great, but just too small for me to handle. They always ended up feeling fidly to me. If they were Mainline size maybe, anything smaller is too small for me to enjoy. Sold my Legends off and don't collect Mainline anymore. I'd say I'm focused on MP, but my MPs are almost "complete". As great as legends are they don't pose or display as well as MPs do. At least I could never get them to, nor have I seen it accomplished.
My 2 cents that doesn't matter MP display better of course as a stand alone piece. But dispplays are better with themes/stories and legends works obviously better.
Having delved into both scales I finally decided to stick with MP and I do usually go with KO's for price reasons. After time I noticed that I preferred how the MPs displayed better and was picking them up more to fiddle with. When I stand back and look at the collection the Legends start losing their details. Transformation feels too small to enjoy moving hinges and flaps that tiny. That saying of giving legends a pass because of the size when alt modes look incomplete I couldn't agree with
I moved to the WFC/Generations Selects/Legends/SS86 figures. They're more reasonably priced, much much less finicky, fewer fake parts (MP 44 Prime, collapsing the entire cab into his legs), and they usually have cool blast effects. And, Toyhax makes them look more G1-esque as I've wanted for years. So, these are the ones I'm putting on my library shelves with backgrounds and lighting to show off.
Value for money you can't beat the Mainline. What put me off it was exclusives of marque characters, and short packing big names like Tarn. It got to the point if I can't have all the characters I want at msrp what's the point of a solid budget line lol. I dropped it like a lot of collectors have. Not because it's not great, because it became a pain in the @$$ to collect. Easier to get the latest Fanstoys figure than Legacy Cosmos...

I've only picked up the different versions of Jetfire from both NewAge and Magic Square. I'm still an MP guy. I think Legends is just too expensive for the size. Hasbro is totally missing out on this market by not mass-producing high end figures at this size with the same quality and accessories as NA and MS but at a more affordable cost. I’m 💯 precent in on MP for my collection. Only legend scale that I will own will be the combiners and that will be for Magic square only.
Well, my days of “collecting then all” are over. But I’m geared for legends with MP cherry pics.
Mps scale is just a better display value for me. Legends price point wayyyy to high.
Agreed, I looked into switching to legends scale but they were almost as much as a masterpiece scale figure.
