    ✨ My favorite kitchen tools:
    Sprouting jars (I was really surprised at how well these worked!) amzn.to/3NHX8r2
    Unbleached cheesecloth (If you prefer the jar & cheesecloth method) amzn.to/3NOQkbn
    Alfalfa sprouts: amzn.to/44wBaxd
    Mung beans to sprout: amzn.to/3Bf0bPW
    Black beluga lentils to sprout: amzn.to/3HPnqEa
    Green lentils to sprout: amzn.to/42ynP5M
    🌱 Directions for sprouts:
    1. Rinse & drain: Measure 1-2 tablespoons of seeds or legumes into a clean jar. (FYI 10g of alfalfa seed = 75g of sprouts.) Rinse & drain all seeds/legumes before using.
    2. Soak: 8-12 hours for lentils or mung beans, 4-6 hours for alfalfa seeds or the sandwich blend that I used in this video. (I like to soak my sandwich blend seeds in the afternoon and then drain just before I go to sleep. The lentils & mung beans I soak overnight and drain in the morning. I find this schedule works well for accommodating both types of sprouts.)
    3. Drain: After soaking, drain the soaking liquid and rest jar in downward facing position so any other liquid can drain out.
    4. Rinse & drain 2x per day (morning & night works best).
    5. After about 4-5 days you will start to see full-grown sprouts! You can eat them at any time after around 4 days.
    6. Store: Once sprouted, keep sprouts in fridge in an air-tight container. I like to use a bit of paper towel at the bottom of my tupperware to absorb any excess moisture, but this is optional.

    Should we keep the jars in sunlight?

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Keep them out of direct sunlight at the beginning, so a shady spot in the kitchen works well. Otherwise they get too hot & dry. 🤗🤗 On the 4th or 5th day some people like to put them near the sun for a little boost, but that’s optional. 😄

    Sprouts are so underrated! Always wanted to grow my own sprouts, the ones in the grocey store are expensive.
    I never knew how to begin, so I am very happy with this step-by-step guide. Thank you!

    Yay, now I finally get to ask my one question about sprouting. I noticed that when the sprouts are done, you did not remove the seeds. So, when you go to eat them, are the seed hulls crunchy or chewy? I don't ever remember seeing the hulls on store-bought sprouts. Then again, I don't really buy sprouts. :- ( LOL.

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      😄😄 Actually, I notice a lot of the hulls naturally pull away from the sprouts. So when you go to remove the sprouts from your jars, you’ll notice a lot of hulls left in there and I just rinse them out and add them into the compost bin. If you do get some mixed in with your sprouts, I’ve seen a hack where you can put them in water and the hulls float to the top…. But I haven’t tried that! I don’t mind if I get a few mixed in.. I guess I’d say they’re crunchy, but so are the sprouts. 😆😆

    Have you ever tried growing broccoli sprouts? I think they are the only type I would consider growing because they’re so expensive at the store and the health benefits are so great.

    • @LetsEatPlants

      Yes! I bought a bag of Mumm’s (same brand as the sandwich booster in this vid) but they weren’t my favorite. 😆😆 You’re right though, the health benefits are great! If you buy them it’s the same process as shown in this vid, just double check the soaking time. (It’s probably 4-6 hours.)

    I have been enjoying growing jar sprouts of all varieties and micro greens for many years here is Ontario Canada. This is how I make my salad every day. They are not an addition for me, they are actually a staple. I started by using a used sauerkraut jar and a piece of nylon window screen and an elastic band. I now use jars specifically for sprouting. Seeds are also available in bulk from Mums seeds or Sproutmaster right here in Canada. 🌱💚🇨🇦

    Very curious about which sprouts need that blackout sleeve!

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find that mung bean sprouts like darkness, but I actually used the blackout sleeve for 3 days on the alfalfa blend seeds and a tea towel to cover the mung beans & lentils for 3 days because my jars were very close to the window!! If you’re in a shady part of the kitchen, you probably don’t need the blackout sleeve (except maybe mung beans which like it very dark). I’ve read the sprouts like a little light on the 4th and 5th day. 🤗🤗 I do think it’s a nice option to have though!!

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, as I’ve grown them with and without the blackout sleeve now, I wouldn’t say I noticed much of a difference (these sprouts are just so darn easy to grow 😂) so really either way should be fine!

    • @paullemay3218
      @paullemay3218 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually bean sprouts used in Chinese cuisine, grown from mung beans , require darkness to keep them white in colour and to keep them from becoming bitter.

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Terry! Excited for you to start! 🤩🤩 As I understand it, microgreens are usually grown in soil and take longer to harvest (around 7-14 days). I’m not sure if you could sprout them in a jar! Some varieties of microgreens are radish, arugula and kale… so I don’t think they come from beans… but someone can correct me if I’m wrong here! 😄😄

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wendyfilice7101 Correct! When you remove the sprouts from the jar you'll probably see quite a few hulls leftover and I just rinse those out from the jar and compost them. You definitely can soak yours to get any extra hulls off, but I haven't found it necessary! Personal preference I suppose. 😆😝
