I'm sure you already know this Johnny but there is a huge court case about a hit and run incident near a military base here in the UK. The victim was a British citizen and the accused perpetrator was the wife of an American who was stationed at a base. She fled citing diplomatic immunity and thus hasn't faced trial. Highlights the grey area of jurisdiction with regards to American bases.

Germany used to have 88 US military bases and closed at least 11. Back in the 1980s, I remember driving around rural georgia(USA) and getting lost. I ran into a place that looked like a secret military site. There were no street signs, no life, nothing but trees and an enormous military fence covering lots of land. The military has bases everywhere.

The rest scattered across the border and was HIDING till we recently pulled out. Just like when people talk about Vietnam war they talk as if the US troops were being overrun and lost. The US never lost a battle in Vietnam and had a kill ratio of around 60+\1 but they lost the objective because the VC hid till we were pulling out. It is obvious to anyone doing their jobs, even in administrative positions/clerical, that our government is about to crumble. If you have common sense and worked for the government, you'd realize, it already has. It wasn't uncommon to hear LTC's say they want to get "their share" of what's left of the government before it falls.

Living on a military installation one thing I can see is that the military population largely supports the surrounding economy and boosts it a lot.
Varying from just food, drinking, houses/rent, barbers, clothing alterations, and general shopping these area around larger installations end up making decent amounts of money from all the military personnel and their spouses that live and shop in the area.
On the negative side this military population also brings much more traffic as tons of people are trying to go to and from the same area every day. Also depending on the base they cause a lot of surrounding noise pollution whether it be aircraft, explosions, helicopters, etc.
There are both negatives and positives to living next to military installations
