On the verge of tears, 6 months after being laid off from 3d Realms and completely run out of savings. Watching this, I realize I dont actaully give a shit about my monetary situation, I just miss working at a studio with people I love. That’s straight up all I feel right now. I miss face to face creative collaboration so goddamn bad. I feel like a husk.

It's a difficult industry for everyone right now. I know I'm a faceless stranger and my two cents don't mean anything, but I'm rooting for you. There are teams out there hungry for someone like you. Don't lose hope. Don't stop wanting what you need. Even if it takes a long time, there will never really be a shortage of creative people wanting your input. I believe in you!

I don't think people realize what a gift Psychodyssey is. It shows aspiring developers what working in the industry looks like. It shows other studios how to run a studio in a more humane way. it shows players and critics the amount of work and pain behind every title. But it's also the most wonderful gift for Tim's kids and the entire studio's kids. I don't know about you but I don't really know what my parents did at work. I knew what kind of job they had but I never shared their experience. It's almost like they both had a separate life outside of mine. Thanks to Psychodyssey, all the kids of the people in the documentary will know their parents probably a lot more than any of us.

It's a genuine honor to get a window into this group of people. That being said, I'm so glad Tazio brought up the parasocial relationships that these long-form earnest windows foster. I really admire them being willing to be depicted in this.

It does hurt to see James saddened a bit by his portrayal, when he basically became the audience self-insert protagonist of the P2 doc. Took us through the whole hero's journey with the capstone of this wedding! Congrats! Hope he manages okay with the parasocial following, because he was always such an insightful lens for us watching at home. Plus I always appreciated seeing him in the comments sections for these videos standing up for his coworkers. Really excited for whatever Double Fine's cookin' up right now (is the new project codename Hawaii?)

Gonna really miss Lisette. She was one of the reasons I followed Doublefine years ago seeing as she was one of the first black artists/animators I found on Google; plus she was working for the company that made my favorite childhood game. YES! A surprise another episode! This feels like a family reunion! The docu series was one of THE BEST docus I've ever seen. So engrossing, so fascinating, so human. It explores so many facets of the human condition under stress and leadership. Everyone's personality came thru - I feel like I know these strangers. I literally went and bought P1 and P2 because of this - and I'm so glad I did. Every workplace sitcom has the scene where two of them get married and everyone from the office turns up and one of them officiates. I've always assumed it was completely unrealistic because no one likes and is liked by everyone at work that much. Congratulations to James for doing it for real and proving me entirely wrong.

I desperately hope that Double Fine is safe. The closure of Tango Gameworks earlier this year hit me incredibly hard. I adored 2023's Hi-Fi Rush, which felt like something that could've been made by Double Fine. Considering that Hi-Fi Rush was an award-winning title and was publicly labeled a "success", seeing the studio behind it so abruptly and senselessly shut down has definitely harmed my faith in Microsoft and Xbox. I think it's fortunate that DF is located in the U.S. since the distance to Tokyo seems to have been at least partially related to the closure of Tango. I just hate to see people who are so clearly passionate and talented being dropped to protect a bottom line, especially so soon after they've proven that what they have to offer is so special.
We must protect Double Fine at all costs.

    • @trentrissubsidiary4619
      @trentrissubsidiary4619 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I was also hit hard by Tango’s closure, both due to the success and positivity surrounding Hi-Fi, and losing a studio that had put out so much quality survival horror in an era lacking that genre. But in retrospect, I believe there was one thing that really led to Microsoft’s decision. Once Shinji Mikami became less involved and eventually left the company, there was a real management shakeup at Tango. I think Tango’s safety was at risk the moment he was gone, and Microsoft let them finish their game before closing them down. Whenever Tim is no longer fulfilled by Double Fine for whatever reason, we can count down the days until Microsoft no longer subscribes to the vision of the studio and lets them go. I’m hoping that day won’t come for a long long time. But it’s been hard to predict Microsoft’s path forward. Whenever Matt Booty eventually departs from Xbox, I’ll be significantly more worried for DF’s safety.
Silver lining is that DF will always have a mountain of supporters cheering them on, and I’ll be in there with them.

Coming back to my own game studio workplace after COVID, it's also never been the same, and we're years past the time where we could first come back. It's lonely, empty many days, and the in-person creative collaboration can't totally be replaced. It was interesting to see that reflected here, and to know that even if some studios have found their footing again, that I'm not alone in feeling this.

There's a certain grace in which the characters and conflict is portrayed in this series that is often not seen in this media landscape of sensationalism. I wasn't expecting one final episode for unpacking all the... _everything,_ but it was very needed and very welcome! Having it end with the game shipping made sense for a story about the making of a game, but that's not _really_ what psychodyssey is, when you think about it. It's about DoubleFine. With the benefit of hindsight, _of course_ it had to end here instead.
I'm excited to hear about whatever else they have cooking! :)

I missed my chance to just try to get my foot in the door. Another regret for the list but it's great to see them doing well so far under Microsoft. The original Psychonauts is one of the pivotal experiences in my life that pushed me to understand I.T. and it pushed my studies in the field. As an almost 30 year old professional in the space now it is very interesting seeing the processes and experiences of developers of living art and how similar they are to the men & women in Cyber Sec. There is a massive tone of lament in this but I hope all of your devs, leads, creatives, etc. understand these things are part of the human experience part of the art. Psychonauts 2 has been one of the few games that lived up to the original title and was a proper follow up, and you all did beyond an amazing job. The team past and present at doublefine created a living work of art that will be loved forever, played replayed and cherished and it will bring joy, distraction, admiration , inspiration and many other things to people who will never express it out loud or to your team. Your work will touch others as it has touched me, what it will inspire and lead to will change person to person but don't overlook your great contributions through your work.

To be completely honest - the first Psychonauts game was the game that stuck with ne the most, along with Shadow of the Collosus. The memory of that exploration is so vivid and nostalgic. You have that gift double fine. Instantious mastalgia with humor to boot!❤

I loved everything about the documentary, the ups and downs, I usually watched/listened to it while I was working at a videogame studio and I wasnt really well during that time, so the documentary really helped me to continue and give it my all, sadly got laid off together with basically all the art team and currently looking for a new chapter. I wish someday I could work at Double Fine, maybe because I live in Europe that might be a bit difficult, but you re up on my list of studios I wish to work in someday so keep up the good work and looking forward to what the future brings, I also hope we see more documentaries.

The whole documentary was a wild ride, and one that I saw myself in over and over. Thank you DFP for capturing something that felt authentic to the experience of development and trying to create something amazing out of ones and zeros (and a whole lot of heart). Psychonauts 1 and 2 are amongst my favorite games (I really need to get a PSVR to give ROR a go!). Love and luck to all involved

When playing i just didnt want it too ever end. Every emotion felt through it and it was straight fun with laugh out loud moments. My 5 year old step son enjoyed it with and in his opinion "best game ever". Thank you!

Thank you so much for this unforgettable journey into showing how diverse people are making awesome stuff together, with their own values, company culture, collaborating and fighting the good fights to make somebody else's favourite game in the end. What a wonderful genuine story about the ups and downs in working in this company.

What an absolute treat. To be gifted with the perfect conclusion to one of my favourite video game documentaries for a game I’ve replayed too many times out of the blue. Felt great to see what everyone felt about the game being out and seeing the success while reflecting on the documentary itself. Thanks so much 2PP and Double Fine! 😊😊😊

Very emotional, my hats off to everyone involved with the production of this and to the DoubleFine studio. Documentaries like these help folks feel closer to the things they care about, and this helped us feel closer to some of the games we care most about. Excited to learn about the next projects that is being made!

The gift that keeps on giving. Thank you DF and 2PP for your incredible work. I toyed with wanting to get into the industry for a few years before I saw PsychOdyssey & DF Adventure but watching those cemented it for me. The DF vibe is special, even when things are bad. Can't wait to see what you've got cooking next.

    Wow. Just, wow.
Thank you so much to everyone involved in the making of this documentary. I am not exaggerating when I say I think this should be a compulsory watch to anyone who wants to work in the creative industry, games or otherwise. From a personal side, this doc has helped me so much as a university student in understanding what it is to work on creative projects as part of a team. And yeah, things aren't always sunshine and rainbows, but so is life.
Thank you again DoubleFine and TwoPlayer Productions for your willingness to share your journey and experiences. Best of luck with your future projects!
