in 2006, we were moving house, and my mom let us each pick a video game to kind of keep our minds off of everything. I picked Psychonauts, and there hasn't been a day since that I haven't thought about it at least once. it's so, so important to me for so many reasons. thank you for not giving up on it.
I'm in tears. Tim, you had to tell everyone "we're out of money" and then, by some small chance, found a message that saved everything? I can't even imagine what you felt. Psychonauts means so much to me. I played it as a young teen and would recommend the series to anyone I meet. Thank you for everything you went through and your commitment. I hope can tell you this in person some day
I backed Broken Age - known then as the mysterious "Double Fine Adventure" - primarily because of how they had planned the creation of a development documentary. In 2012 I was in my 2nd year as a professional game developer, and at the time I had pitched to my bosses the idea of a character-driven puzzle adventure story/quest series for the MMO game we were making. We had nothing like it in our game at the time, and they loved it. I came up with a character called Mister Puzzleworth who was obsessed with puzzles and who had a sad and traumatic backstory. I remember feeling like I was channeling the creativity of Tim, the Psychonauts team, and all the heroes of adventure games. It was a massive success (within our game and its community) and remains as one of my most proud and happiest accomplishment in my professional career, even 10+ years later. Thank you for these documentaries - it's an enormous inspiration 🙏
Aside from the fact that I love the Psychonauts, I have a lot of respect for Double Fine as a studio, especially Tim. He really seems to care about his team, and the atmosphere/work culture. I also really appreciate the behind the scenes videos this channel has done for so many years, really showcasing how difficult, stressful, and disheartening game development can be. There is a level of reality that I think Double Fine brings to the table not only in their games but also in their behind the scenes videos. For me what makes Psychonauts so special, is that on the surface it's a fun game that anybody can pick up and play, but playing it as an adult you can really appreciate the themes of the game way more.
I literally backed that game so that 2pp would make another documentary. The Broken Age one was, and is still, the most honest look at how video games are made.
never heard about 2 Player Productions before this, but this was one of the best experiences ive had watching any kind of documentary and to have one for such a well known creator like Tim Schafer is insane to me.
The insane thing about their fears with making a sequel is that its the only sequel I haven't felt a hint of it for, and I haven't seen anyone say "they really shit the bed with this" about. Maybe it's just that I'm not in those really negative spaces but I only saw "wow, this is even better than I could have hoped for" "wow, this is the same feeling I had playing the first one nearly twenty years ago" They couldn't have done a better job with it. I'm so excited to finally be watching psychOdyssey.
Psychonauts has remained my favorite game of all time since I was 11 years old and now I’m nearing 30 and Psychonauts 2 is tied for 1st with it. They did an incredible job. I loved every moment of it
There's a couple places I think that sentiment could come from. Personally I loved the game but there's a definite sense that something has been left behind, all throughout it. It's further emphasized by the fact that so many memorable characters from the first game just don't appear, or appear in a highly reduced capacity. There's a segment of the final stage where it all catches up like a ton of bricks. It goes by like it's just a cute throwback if you don't have those old memories ingrained in your head, and the game doesn't emphasize it at all really, but it was the hardest hitting depiction of "going back to someplace you once knew as a kid, but it's just not the same and neither are you" that I've ever seen. I can only imagine the discussions the team had when they made that segment.
I'd recognise that art style anywhere. Take a bow, Michael Firman, for that awesome intro sequence! Also, Tim was just joking, but that muffin analogy of how to design video games made me stop and think, haha.
29 year industry vet here. In the 90s and early 2000s we were kids and worked ourselves to death. And we loved it. We went through the war together. I have strong bonds with those people that will never be replicated again in a work environment. Then - for better or for worse (probably better) lawyers got involved and the industry changed, limiting crunch. But the memories I have from those times are my most cherished. Great job here capturing that vibe.
I make business software (everything happens over HTTP) and my 9-5 is already pretty intense every single day even working from home. I can’t imagine no boundaries around that
Saw this land on my subscription feed, a 42 min video from one of my favourite developers. Then to later finish it and realize, oh dear god there are 31 more episodes between 25 to 90 minutes. Have no words....
When Psychonauts 2 was announced I jumped out of my chair screaming it is happening! My girlfriend still says it is the most excited she has ever seen me. I love both games so much and am thankful for this documentary!
I have never played or heard of psychonauts before this video, but I was so intrigued by the premise I started watching, and I’m captivated. Such a genuine look at game development. Bringing art and ideas to life isn’t easy and I am grateful the industry has people like this in it. Thank you.
I am a child/teen right now and I have finished every Psychonauts game, I'm so happy that one day in the future look back and remember this beautiful life changing game.
I completed a degree in psychology and have now been a cognitive behavioural therapist for the last 5 years, it may not have sold well at first but it got into my hands when I was 10, was a seminal game to me and helped me to realise my intrigue with the different perspectives we all develop through life. So thank you.
A world where Double Fine can continue to make games is a world I want to live in. Grateful that y'all are able to share more of your work and stories with us.
For me, it was love at first sight with this game. It's crazy that people thought the game was too weird, when it was right in line with a Tim Burton-type of aesthetic. Watching this brought all these feelings back, and I just bought the game again. ❤
Infinite respect to these guys for doing what so many of us find so incredibly difficult to do in our lives: take a giant risk on a dream and put in the work and effort until the dream becomes a reality. It inspires and transcends and makes you consider if what you're doing in life right now is really where you want to be. Cheers guys.
What hooked me back in the day - probably a while after launch, unfortunately - and led me to seek Psychonauts out was first learning about the production process - the crunch, the lock-ins - and the people behind the game. I don't know for sure if it was the G4 Icons documentary or what, but it's special to me to be able to see this new docu series now after having been able to back and play Psychonauts 2, and the people are still just as important to me now.
The Psychonauts games to this day are some of my favorites of all time, and the first one aged so well! I played through it as an adult recently and it's just as fun as when I was a kid playing it. Great work guys : )
It's crazy how it feels like I know so many of these folks from the previous docs, like old friends. And after 31 more episodes they'll probably feel like family.
When the game was already out for a while, say 2008, I picked it up finally when I was on holiday in Greece and I brought my xbox 360 with me. As a kid I loved drawing and creating my own characters and cool poses. I was always so interested in the box art for Psychonauts, but I never had picked it up...one day I had the courage to try something new while I was on holiday. Popped it into my 360 and I was sold from the start! the character designs, the color palettes, the gnarly looking style. The music too! very relaxing to walk around the camp site and day and night. There is so much in this game that made such an impression to me back then...it was fun and happy stuff at a lot of times, but also this...dark eerie mysterious edge to it. I think what I most loved is the fact that every level was its own 'game' almost - you keep the basics of platforming and combat, but most of it was always switched up to some other new and fresh gameplay. I thought this was genius! Thanks for never giving up, team. This game made impact on me in my childhood time.
Team Double Fine, your Psychonauts is a BEST game I've ever played! I like it SO much, this is the game i like the MOST. ALL that characters, that sick levels, that story, that gameplay, oh that's stuck in my mind for 18 years and I absolutely LOVE it. Thank you everyone who has been in that legendary team, that videos make me smile remembering what I've felt playing this absolutely masterpiece. I have this game on 4 physical CDs like my rarity item (I live in Kazakhstan and here we have the Buka's localized version (trust me it's absolutely legenday version), i like this localization so much too), and I have the steam version as well. Thank you so much for Psychonauts 2 i have so much fun playing it, but the first Psychonauts is forever and always in my heart Best Regards to Double Fine Team! You guys are the BEST of all time and SO MUCH UNDERRATED but I believe you all!
Psychonauts 2 is easily my favorite game of all time!!! My father had the original Psychonauts on his laptop and I remember me and my siblings playing hours of it at our kitchen table. The first game was amazing but the story, characters, and gameplay of the second one just blew me away! Played it the minute it launched!!
i was born the EXACT day the first game came out, i didn't grow up with it, but when i found the game and went into it, it fit with me just right, and it deserves the reputation it has even after 17, and rising, years
Me too, my dad was the one who showed me their games when I was little. I remember my dad giving money to some of their kickstarters and watching him play their games until I was finally old enough to play them myself.
A 23 hour documentary, f*ck yea dude! The rollercoaster of emotions already just getting the first game out is rough, then to do it again for a sequel. Good job Doublefine team, you guys are a shining beacon of creativity in the high budget indie space now.
I know that I'm a little too early in this series to comment about Psychonauts 2 but this game truly saved some part of me when I played it and I'm extremely grateful for all of you guys that you pushed through and turned this gem into a real thing. Also: I love this format of documentary.
The opening in this doco is absolutely incredible, I had to come back now after finishing the series just to listen to it again. Especially after the journey this doco took me on, this intro hits so hard.
I never had the chance to play this game growing up but I recently got into the series this year and my mind was blown. I 100% both games and was OBSESSED for a few months. This game inspired me to draw fanart, watch other gameplays, and finally watch this series. Everyone's hard work definitely paid off in making this a memorable and amazing game. Thank you for sharing all these amazing clips and giving us a whole new outlook. :)
Honestly what an emotional rollercoaster, I am only getting round to watching this now and it is so beautifully edited and put together. As an original backer for Broken Age, the Double Fine Adventure! was exactly the same and I loved every minute of it. I love how everyone gets into the weeds on everything, mixed with the archival footage it just feels amazing peering into the ups and downs of the game development world, it has always been a genuine dream of mine to work for a place like Double Fine - maybe one day if I ever miraculously bump into one of these talented folks I will tell them of what all of their games have meant to me growing up. Glad to count myself as one of those sales of Psychonauts when it released on Xbox way back in 2005.
What’s funny is she said at the end that some people won’t connect with it anymore and now that it’s been out for awhile I could argue that even MORE people connect with this world now than before and the people that loved Psychonauts absolutely adored Psychonauts 2. Some even more so.
I have been waiting for this for sooooo long and praying to see it every week since I became a massive fan of the Double Fine Adventure, Psychonauts 2 and the studio in general. It doesn’t feel real to casually check once again and there be SO much to watch. I feel like Helmut felt… but without the panic attacks. Thanks you 2PlayerProductions and of course Double Fine
Tim starting his own company must have felt amazing. The amount of passion and dedication put in all his games is amazing. To live and bleed these games. The incredibly talented team make these games so amazing. When I first played psychonauts I was amazed how different and amazingly creative it was. The unique characters. How it transported you into another world. I was so excited hearing about the second one. Definitely an another amazing game. I love watching these documentaries about how much involvement it takes for these games and the challenges they face making the games based on the technical limits at the time. Also how rewarding it is at the end. As a 3D artist these are inspiring. Psychonauts Like Myst or Another world changed gaming.
Yes! I’ve been waiting for this! I loved the Broken Age doc. Watched it all on TH-cam and still bought the physical copy of it. Hoping this will get a physical release too!
As someone who backed Broken Age and loved the Documentary, I've been waiting a long...long time for this. Seems as per usual Double Fine makes the wait worth it.
Thank you for this. I've watched DFA several times (was watching episode 5 again earlier actually lol) and to find this an hour ago has made me so happy. So excited to watch all of this!
When I heard "...Mildly pleasant." all I felt in my head was the echo of Ford Cruller's voice... The price of Double Fine content becoming a major hyperfixation if not special interest, I guess. 😔 ...Goofing aside, (if I dare say that) I am absolutely loving this series & definitely showing this to my fiancé when he gets back. We're both becoming die hard fans of Psychonauts- & possibly slowly but surely Double Fine as a whole- so I just know we're gonna have a blast going through this series. (Love seeing content from your other works as well like the hexipal stickers haha)
Just finished the entire documentary. It was so good im about to watch the entire thing again. 2 Player Productions thank you for this instant classic. Very inspiring to watch as an aspiring game developer.
I am so grateful for Double Fine Studios making it through the hard times and keeping the faith. Me and my friends to this day remember spending many nights playing Psychonauts together as kids. To this day, PN 1 & 2 are my favorite games IN THE WORLD. And I have played A LOT of games.
I just want to cheer for the whole team and to say "Thank you for all your hard work and crazy ideas!" I have a deep respect for Double Fine as a game studio because they always make new and crazy stuff. Not every DF game is successful I would say, but even if some of them fail quite dramatically, the others are still masterpieces. And the most valuable for me is that DF always experiment, always goes for something that blows your mind. Guys, you are the best! Thank you from the bottom of my hearth.
The only reason I learned about Psychonauts back in the day was because an errant search on what Richard Horovitz was doing post-Zim led me to a pre-release article showing off a still from the El Odio fight. I was enthralled by the caption, which was (paraphrased), "Raz flips out of the way of the bull's attack and takes a moment to admire its stunning high heels." Which was enough for me to pre-order it (it's the first game I remember receiving in the mail, actually, back when that wasn't really the go-to way to buy games). For a long time it felt like an obscure gem that was pretty much just for me. My birthday gifts that year were all coordinated among my friends to be from the Double Fine store, too-- I remember all of them being utterly tickled that the invoices had "Thanks for the smiley! :)" written on them.
What a nice gift from you guys for my birthday. I lost the count how many times I watched the double fine adventure over and over. Following you guys filled me with extreme amount of inspiration and determination towards my goal of becoming an indie developer. Once more thank you so much for being you.
I know of Psychonauts, but have actually never played it. But I love Double Fine! I remember watching the series on the Amnesia Fortnight dev videos and then downloading the POC/Demos on steam. These documentaries on game development are so endearing and incredibly important for us gamers/consumers. This is just so cool and fun to watch!
I don't think this is hyperbole but from my experience of being a backer of various Double Fine projects over the years and seeing the incredible documentaries they put out (oh, and the games of course), the pairing of 2 Player / Double Fine is the gold standard for gaming documentaries. Incredible.
Psychonauts is the only game that I replayed more than 3 times and each time I find new things I enjoy about it. It always felt special and I still can't believe that a sequel was made. I'm really grateful to Double Fine for crafting so many incredible mindscapes in both games.
Psychonauts 1 and 2 are both fantastic games! I’ve played them multiple times, even in recent days 👍 Thanks for all the hard work! Let’s hope for a third one as well 😍❤️🏆🎉
Psychonauts is so important to me, and I didn't mind waiting so long for the sequel. It was worth the wait. The original takes stereotypes about mental illness and uses them paint a humanizing picture, and the sequel blew it out of the water by doing even better. More nuanced, more emotional, more sensitive. 10/10, should be required literature for everyone in the human race.
I appreciate and admire you guys for making these documentaries for your games and upload them for everyone. Very informative, inspiring, and entertaining. Wanted to thank you for that
Yeess!! So hyped to watch the bts for Psychonauts 2! The doc for Broken Age is one of my favorite pieces of content of all time hands down. The crew did such an amazing job capturing the process and reality behind creating games. So stoked to watch this unfold!
Psychonauts is not only my favorite Platformer of All Time but also one of my favorite games of all time period. still remember watching gameplay of it on Xplay in '05 and being mesmerized by the gameplay of it. when i found out you guys were doing a sequel i couldn't believe it. was even happier to see the PSVR game that was a prologue to P2. hope its development cycle was a lot easier than the first one (got my fingers crossed for Psychonauts 3 tho)
I'm here after randomly continuing my Grim Fandango remastered playthrough from 6 years ago. A treasure trove of knowledge and perspective on game development that needs to be seen by everyone today.
This is so well made. It's awesome you have so much footage from the team. The story is pretty inspiring, I like that it was more about making a good game in the eye of the team rather than all about the financial success of the game (not that it's not important).
Psychonauts 2 is truly one of my favorite games ever, and I'm so excited to see behind the scenes of how it all got made Still salty there's no manual save system though. I have a save slot for every level in Psychonauts 1, so if there's ever a specific brain I want to play I can just go to that save slot, play through the brain, and quit without saving. Makes replaying so much easier and fun. Alas, in the age of auto saves I have to replay 60% of the game to get to the part I want to replay, so i don't even bother most of the time. Bring back manual saves! But truly a great game. Such a great story and cool powers and awesome visuals and perfect comedy. Thank you, Psychonauts 2 team!
Truly an inspiration. I'll be following this series very closely! I love everything about the culture and passion that Double Fine has. You guys are amazing.
Oh I heard about this on the Gin&Juice Podcast and I can't wait to dive into this! I love watching journeys unfold in real time like this! My son is sooo into gaming and tech...maybe I can impress him by learning something from y'all! 🙌🏾🙌🏾
I remember playing the demo for this game, and wanting to play the full game, but my parents wouldn't buy it for me. Glad I got to play it before the second game came out.
I know this is largely a repackaged edit of the "how doublefine was formed" episode(s) done for the Broken Age documentary series, but it kind of hits harder here knowing that the sequel *did* finally come. Even back then, even though we were excited for a new adventure game, Psychonauts 2 felt like it might never come. Sure, it had a code name, but how far out was it? How many years would we wait? It felt so far away and maybe Double Fine would never make it as a company. So, I'm glad y'all documented it back then just in case it didn't happen, and I'm glad it's here again because it did happen.
Love you guys, really cool emotions and all these 2000s development recordings, thanks to team for documenting tons of that and to everyone from the team who okay with sharing it all with us, outsiders.
in 2006, we were moving house, and my mom let us each pick a video game to kind of keep our minds off of everything. I got the game in an unofficial bundle at my local game store the guy just gave me the game for free

Omg awesome! I cant wait to see the behind the scenes of this crazy masterpiece.
I know that I'm a little too early in this series to comment about Psychonauts 2 but this game truly saved some part of me when I played it and I'm extremely grateful for all of you guys that you pushed through and turned this gem into a real thing. Also: I love this format of documentary.
Psychonauts is a masterpiece and inspired me to make my own video games. Thank you for your hard work on the game and this documentary!
respect and congrats on all the success!!!
Thanks Tim for being such a awesome person, Grim fandango still is my favorite, best art style ever.
Beautiful. Thank you so much for putting this out for free.
This whole series is on par with the best Ken Burns documentarys. The best thing I saw in years. Thank you for this!
What’s funny is she said at the end that some people won’t connect with it anymore and now that it’s been out for awhile I could argue that even MORE people connect with this world now than before and the people that loved Psychonauts absolutely adored Psychonauts 2. Some even more so.
Psychonauts is fucking amazing. Everything that doublefine makes is like stepping into a DMT trip. Never normal and boring.
Just watched the first episode and I can already tell this is going to be really special.
This was so wholesome; you and your team have been a huge inspiration on my life. Love you all, thank you for everything.
When I heard "...Mildly pleasant." all I felt in my head was the echo of Ford Cruller's voice...
The price of Double Fine content becoming a major hyperfixation if not special interest, I guess. 😔
...Goofing aside, (if I dare say that) I am absolutely loving this series & definitely showing this to my fiancé when he gets back.
I just want to cheer for the whole team and to say "Thank you for all your hard work and crazy ideas!"
I have a deep respect for Double Fine as a game studio because they always make new and crazy stuff.
I was enthralled by the caption, which was (paraphrased), "Raz flips out of the way of the bull's attack and takes a moment to admire its stunning high heels."
Which was enough for me to pre-order it (it's the first game I remember receiving in the mail, actually, back when that wasn't really the go-to way to buy games).
I absolutely love your documentary content. I got so excited seeing this was all released at once!!! :)
Wanted to thank you for that
OMG I can't believe you documented all of this!!! I'm so hyped. When I grow up I wanna make something awsome like this too!
This is so nostalgic having watched the Broken Age docs in high school. Love everything you do!
this is just as great as the broken age doc was, fantastic work
Absolutely amazing documentary. Thank you to all involved!
Thanks to tim, I have would've never played brutal legend and psychonauts. Thanks tim, for the memories ❤
PsychOdyssey is the 'Get Back' of video game documentaries.
Yeess!! So hyped to watch the bts for Psychonauts 2! The doc for Broken Age is one of my favorite pieces of content of all time hands down. The crew did such an amazing job capturing the process and reality behind creating games. So stoked to watch this unfold!
You've added another game for me to play every year thank you very much continuing the story
Oh man Brad Muir! Miss him popping up on Giant Bomb. Such a heartfelt dude and a great presence.
I'm here after randomly continuing my Grim Fandango remastered playthrough from 6 years ago. A treasure trove of knowledge and perspective on game development that needs to be seen by everyone today.
I am super happy that two player productions is back!!
I loved and still adore the original game, and I'm glad to have helped out fund the Kickstarter campaign for the sequel, which turned out awesome.
This is so well made. It's awesome you have so much footage from the team. The story is pretty inspiring, I like that it was more about making a good game in the eye of the team rather than all about the financial success of the game (not that it's not important).
Psychonauts 2 is truly one of my favorite games ever, and I'm so excited to see behind the scenes of how it all got made
Still salty there's no manual save system though.
Truly the spiritual successor to all the great games Tim worked on.
Okay, makes me wanna cry in 0:28 already.
Just with the "What's next" "Psychonauts 2"
Psychonauts is easily one of my all-Tim favourites. I loved the sequel and hope we'll see more from the series.
This is a great start to the doc. I knew I'd enjoy watching the process, but I'm hooked now
Truly an inspiration.
This is such a nice surprise!! I love documentaries about game dev!! Thank you for making such charming games! :D
I remember playing the demo for this game, and wanting to play the full game, but my parents wouldn't buy it for me. Glad I got to play it before the second game came out.
Nice to see Scott "Math is the Worst" Campbell haha
I know this is largely a repackaged edit of the "how doublefine was formed" episode(s) done for the Broken Age documentary series, but it kind of hits harder here knowing that the sequel *did* finally come. Even back then, even though we were excited for a new adventure game, Psychonauts 2 felt like it might never come. Sure, it had a code name, but how far out was it? How many years would we wait? It felt so far away and maybe Double Fine would never make it as a company. So, I'm glad y'all documented it back then just in case it didn't happen, and I'm glad it's here again because it did happen.
I love DoubleFine, thank you for inspiring me so much!
Love you guys, really cool emotions and all these 2000s development recordings, thanks to team for documenting tons of that and to everyone from the team who okay with sharing it all with us, outsiders.
Excellent first episode - looking forward to watching more.
Excited to go deep with this one and already finding it fascinating
A masterpiece genesis, love you guys!
This is just what I needed, it feels like new psychonauts content just keeps popping out of nowhere haha
What an eye-opening, inspiring, and-at times-infuriating story. Thank you
Beautiful. Thanks for making this (plus the games!).
Oh I am SO excited for this documentary. I was equally excited for, and pleased with, psychonauts 2
"What color is the sky in your world?" is what Frasier asks Cliff in Cheers.
Such a talented team!! Thank you for making one of the most unique games of all time
