A "regular guy" but an "exceptional presenter"!!! :) I really enjoy your content and down-to-earth style! :) You are definitely someone worth listening to :)
Hi, my name is Scott, I also really enjoyed your video’s and really appreciate your information. I also am a newbi. Real newbi. I don’t even have a drone yet they are in the mail somewhere. I have been watching videos for a long time. I am 64 I have st stage 4 Emphasema also 13 months ago I find out I also have stage 4 Sqamus cell lung cancer. I should have been been dead 8 months ago. But I am a fighter and have a wonderful wife that takes such good care of me anyways I want some thing to help me put my mind on something else so flying Drones gives me hope and joy. And really enjoy guys like you thank you so much. I have made some mistakes on Cheap Drones. So it will be a slow start. Because my wife and I are both disabled. So another reason I enjoy your information. Thank you so much Sir God Bless You. Sorry about the long comment I wanted you to get to know me.
At last a person providing a video with great practical suggestions and not a phony wannabee. Excellent video by a knowledgeable person. Thank you. I will be buying your stuff.
Just read it on the insert: discharge down to 40-65% if not going to be used for 10 days or more. It'll automatically discharge down to 65% after 10 days of non use. (P3 Intelligent battery)
Thanks for the post and I'm glad you enjoyed the clip. I have a lot more content posting soon so be sure and sub the channel so you don't miss anything.
I love that you explain the practical uses and benefits of the accessories you mention as it's far more useful than just a video saying get this get that etc and then share affiliate links trying to make you buy them which seems to be what a lot of others are doing or trying to do. I also like that you have experience with using them yourself as it lets you give insight into things to be aware of when using them vs not using them etc, makes it more informative.
I'm new to the drone world and after viewing many different youtube tips I have noticed that your videos are straight to the point and very helpful. Thanks for the tips.
I really appreciate you watching and posting. I'm glad you like the clips and I'm trying to put together content that helps others with their flying. Be sure to sub the channel, I have a lot more posts coming this week.
Very concise comprehensive advice. I especially like the idea of the log book. You not only told about the 10 items, but gave a good and intelligent reason behind them. I'm a soon-to-be Phantom owner, thank you.
Terry, thanks for the post and I'm glad you enjoyed the clip. I am posting a few new DJI clips this week so be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
Thanks for the support! I did this clip a few years back and was just getting started with clips and how no idea back then how brutal some commenters can be. I posted a clip earlier that same week and got hammered in the comments about some small detail and it almost drove me off the platform. Since then I realize that there will always be some level of negativity on TH-cam and have learned to roll with it. I still appreciate folks letting me know they enjoy the clips and it's what keeps me in front of the camera, uncovering new tech. Stop back soon and thanks again! Rick
I appreciate your presentation/teaching technique. You have an excellent command of the English language and your material is all good content and zero "fluff". Thanks for making such informative videos.
Thanks a lot for watching the clip and the post. I love flying and am hoping that the clips I produce are helping others in the hobby. Please be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss any updates and thanks again for stopping by. Rick
I did the numbers on the car charger. A small inverter from Walmart $10.00. Use existing 110 volt battery charger $0. I do like your videos, keep up the good work!
Thanks for the post but you have to be careful with those inexpensive inverters. They don't produce a "pure" sinewave and even though they work for passive loads like lights, they can quickly damage a charger or your cells by letting through too much noise. Your best bet is a dedicated car charger from DJI or the one we have listed on our site. These are specially designed to safely convert the 12v in your car to a charging current for your batteries.
Early inverters output was not clean, however having put these new ones on an "O" scope and seeing a clean output, and they work with TVs, laptops, all electronics I have used.
You didn't mention a folding landing pad, one of the first accessories I bought. Provides a nice clean/flat surface to take off from and to land on. Stops your drone sucking up dust/sand/whatever into the motors. With a P4P and precision landing it provides a perfect high contrast marker.
I just bought my P3 standard and have only made a few test flights from my front yard. I so appreciate your video on how not to kill your drone and the 10 must have accessories. I will continue watching your videos, great work. Subscribing now.
We've recently purchased our first drone , a phantom 3S , and it's fantastic, and so is this video you've posted. Thank You very much for your very informative presentation. Out of your top 10 items, we purchased 9 with the drone. Made sense. Thanks again. Kind Regards from Eastern England.
What an intelligent video! Just bought my first P4 and I added 7 of the ten items he mentioned - now to get the other 3 items, Lens kit, Gimbal guard and oh yes, a Log book... excellent video and I AM subscribed...thanks.
David, thanks for the kind words and the support. I enjoy making these clips and have a few more almost ready to post so be sure to stop back soon. Rick
Thank you Rick. I was on the fence regarding passive range extenders, I will definitely give them a shot. I truly appreciate the time you take to produce these videos to share your experiences with the rest of us. Well done, thanks again.
Steve, thanks!. They are a great upgrade for very little money that can have a huge impact on your distance. I'm out of them right now but have an order arriving this week if you can wait. If not, Amazon is a great place to look for them. Rick
I am thinking of purchasing a Mavic, Rick & your presentation here with accessories is outstanding. I like how you discuss the items thoroughly in a knowledgeable way as this aids understanding from a pedagogical way.
Gerat video. I never thought about a log book, especially for someone that has been a hobbyist as myself and want to make the transition to commercial at some point. Thanks for the great video and info.
Through crash testing many different quads, Prop Guards are also crumple zones. Limits damage to motors and main frame or chasis. Propellers are expendable and accepted damage. In flipovers on take offs, they work great to protect props. Could protect people from blades. Advanced designs have a uni-guard or one piece blade guard like a saucer design. Also aerodynamic for fast forward flight.
How about using a power inverter instead of the car charger enabling the home charger for all batteries? You're the source I've grown to admire. Thanks for all you do, you're a natural in this field👍🏻👍🏻
That's a great idea and I just installed one in my Explorer to allow me to do just that. I would caution you that some of the less expensive ones are not great with the power they provide so spend a few extra dollars and look for one that regulates the voltage and provides a true sine wave. Thanks for your support and stop back soon. I'm working on a clip with Phantom 5 predictions next. Rick
When you are a newbie, you see many products and wonder if you should invest in these items and why. This video answered many questions I had about accessories.
Love your approach. Making all of the information to date that you have presented, that I have been lucky to listen in on, very accessible - I am brand new to this hobby and listening in on what you have to say has sincerely inspired me top jump in with both feet. I am a musician and also a presenter and am hoping to have the ability with the drone to capture some very interesting and intriguing performance footage to mix in with what footage I am already able to capture with my regular cameras. Thank you so much for your time, your knowledge and your passion to share with the rest of us. You keep it simple, clear, concise and honest. You are a cut above. Wishing you great and continued success.
Thanks Rick, those are very good suggestions and the friend that I bought from has already started down that path for me. Fortunately for me I am selling the Drone to move up to the DJI P4. The drone I have is the DJI Flamewheel F550 with all the bells and whistles when it came out. I am really looking for more simplicity. I bought the drone moving into a new hobby, but my hobby soon after I bought it became the F-35 and maintaining that beast between all its locations from Yuma AZ to PAX River. I will cut and paste your suggestion to my bud who now has his own successful drone operation in Phoenix. Thanks again Rick.
Good luck with finding a buyer quickly. You're going to love the Phantom 4, its a dream to fly and the video quality is amazing. Let me know if you have any questions when you make the purchase, I'll be happy to help.
Hi there Drone Valley group. I am new to the group and after having watched MANY drone videos, this is the best channel I have found so far. I am an R/C pilot of 42 years and have flown Airplanes up to 42% and Helicopters. I am new to drones ( just purchased a P4P with an IPad mini4) and am looking forward to adding this to my experience. As a LONG TIME flight and safety instructor, I really like the style the information is presented in. I am also a photographer of 47 years which brings me to the real reason for this post. I do not know about the filters that are available for the drones but the variable density (turn the outer ring to darken or lighten the density) for 35mm has a problem with a dark line and in some cases a dark cross will form with increased density. Even the most expensive of them have this issue to some extent. Just something to watch for. It may not be an issue with the cheaper lenses on drone cameras.
Lloyd, thanks a lot for the compliments on the content and I'm glad you're enjoying the channel. I have a lot of fun flying and enjoy sharing my experiences with others. I agree with you about the variable density filter and I normally use a set of ND filters (4, 8, 16, 32) when I'm shooting in bright sunlight to help knock down some of the glare. I'll have more content posting this week so be sure and stop back soon. Rick
I bought a Mavic Pro this week. And I've managed to buy several things from your list just "might be good to have" before seeing the video. I bought the Fly More Combo so I already have car charger, extra blades and extra batteries. On top of that I went online and ordered 4 more blades and I've bought a 4th battery. Also I have placed an order for blade guards. You made a good point. I had thought of them mostly to protect the drone but I will probably have them on more often when there are people around. I also ordered similar range extenders not knowing if they would be helpful or not but I wanted to try.
This video was a huge help for me as I am getting my Mavic Pro tomorrow. I was wondering what I should have in my kit and this was a blessing to get me started. Thanks Rick. Be well and look forward to seeing more from you.
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. I love flying and am having fun doing these clips. Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss any new ones and welcome to the family! Rick
I just got my drone and have been watching all kinds of videos. Yours was informative, well-produced, interesting, and you got to the point! I'll be subscribing now
This video is what I was really looking for, informative, understandable, and very helpful. I'm not much of a newb when it comes down to the subject of drones, but I always pick up a thing or two from each one of your videos.
Thanks a lot for posting the compliments. I really enjoy flying and sharing what I can on the channel. Be sure to stop back, I have a few new Mavic clips posting this weekend. Rick
Fantastic video! I have reading, and watching videos on drones for two weeks for beginners and what I need eventually this is by far the most informative video I have seen so far, ty for taking the time to help a beginner like my self. Keep the videos coming.... I subscribed
Another informative video, professionally presented with great ideas. Sorry for being redundant here...Especially important is adding a filter to the front of the lens, clear glass, haze, neutral density, or circular polarizer (great for sunny days as it cuts reflective glare and some haze, and is especially useful when near water and it adds contrast). ALWAYS have some kind of filter on to protect the front layer of lens glass. Filters are a LOT CHEAPER than lenses.
Barry, thanks for the kind words and I am working on an updated version for the Spark and the Mavic Pro so be sure to check back if you fly one of those copters. Rick
Hey Rick, thanks for the great recommendation and use-case scenarios that you provided for the folks at Microraptor for their fantastic case. For my P4 and six batteries, I got the hard case with foam that also came with the soft backpack. Gives me a nice spot to store extra sets of blades, the controller, tablet slot, memory card slots and so much more. A bit of an investment, but really not much more than some of the others I was considering in the $180-200 range and and the Microraptor one offers so much more. These guy owe you a beer! Thanks a bunch. Happy flyer here!!
I fly a phantom 4 advanced +. I would have added to the list a lanyard for the controller. Not much worse could happen than dropping the controller either in flight or not. Was the first accessory I bought. It should have been included with the drone. Great video.
Brian, thanks for commenting and watching. I'll be posting a few clips a week on all aspects of quads so be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss any of them. Rick
Got my iPad shade today and it works great with the anti-glare film for flying my new Spark! Flying over water is a concern so I bought a Getterback but it is to big for my lil Spark but seems to be perfect for the Mavic Pro. No one has a gimbal guard for the Spark yet but it and the signal extender are next on my list of must have accessories! Oh yeah, the DroneKeeperMini is another must have for location help in Finding a down drone! Got two on order!
Newbie here. just received a mavic pro from Santa and I've been scared to fly it. Lol for now I'm watching as many videos as possible to gain some perspective and knowledge on it. I've never flown before so I guess I'm just afraid of losing a thousand dollar drone on my first flight. Lol. thx for the videos. There helping a ton! Michael
Mike, thanks for the post and I know exactly what you mean about being a little scared to take the quad up. It's amazing technology and seems so fragile. The best advice I can give you is to fly it low and close for a long while in a very open area until you get used to the controls. The good news is that the Mavic Pro is a very smart drone and will do most of the flying for you. Once you get accustomed to the basics, start flying higher with wider circles. The best part about this hobby is that you can get used to the quad at your own pace. I have friends that still refuse to fly over water or near trees and that's OK. They love flying as much as I do and just have different comfort levels than me. You'll get there eventually, the key thing is that you're having fun! Thanks again for the post and be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss any updates. Rick
Rick, Thanks for your professional advice it has definitely helped calm me a bit. I'm definitely having a ball learning all about the hobby and I'm so excited about piloting a drone and getting good at it. I'm the type that has to master things no matter how much work, cost or sacrifice. Lol lol. That's both good and bad. Lol. As you probably already know. I'm from south Philadelphia so there's not a lot of wide open spaces where I live but I am within 15 min of grass and trees. Man, You guys take that stuff for granite. Lol. All I see is asphalt and concrete not to mention plenty of cockroaches, mice and the occasional rat from time to time. Lol lol I'm looking forward to posting my first flight or maybe second since my first will be very boring for most you guys... not for me. Lol. Thank you again for the advice and all your work on your channel. If you can point me to a good drone hobbyist forum I would appreciate that very much. Thx Michael
Great video and great accessories I did not know existed. Definitely getting the range extender, lenses and prop guards. Question on the gimbal guard: seems this might interfere with a photo/video of the camera pointing straight down. Does it have an opening for the camera to obtain a clear unobstructed view pointing straight down?
Thanks for the compliment and you're going to love that quad. It flies like a dream and captures some amazing video and pictures. Good Luck with it! Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything we post. I have a lot of new material I'm working on.
Thanks a for the compliment and I'm glad you enjoy the clips. Hearing that folks like the content really inspires me to keep doing them. Be sure to throw me a sub so you don't miss any updates. Rick
Some good advice in this video, however you'd do well to read up on filters and their intended purpose. Specifically the difference between ND and a circular polarizer.
Very nice high quality video. I have a few of the items you mentioned and learned about the gimbal guard. Could have used that while landing on a pier and the legs went through the boards and mashed the gimbal.
Thanks for the comment and I had a similar experience when landing on cobble near the edge of a stream. One of the rocks was sticking up higher than the others and almost dinged the gimbal. The guard helps a lot to prevent this type of damage. I appreciate you stopping by and hope that you'll consider subscribing to the channel Rick
I'm glad you enjoyed it and I am working on another one as an update with some of the newer accessories. Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
Oh, one more thing about the lens kits (and I apologize if someone has mentioned this already. I didn't read through all the comments first). Technically what you were showing were "filters" and not lenses. and it looked like you were showing Neutral Density filters (commonly called ND filters). It sounded like you were saying that they changed the "quality" of the light, and actually, they only change the brightness of the light (in essence, making it darker). Hence the word "neutral" in the name; they aren't designed to change the color and affect the light other than making less light reach the camera sensor. The reason people use neutral density filters is so that they can achieve a "film-like / cinematic" feel to their video. They are trying to shoot at 24fps and have a shutter speed of 1/50th of a second, as that most replicates the frame rate and shutter speed that movies were shot at. The problem is, on bright days, it could be hard to get your shutter speed as slow as 1/50th of a second. There are other filters that are available that could change the quality of the light, such as a UV filter, or skylight filter, or a warming filter, to make filming in mid-day less blue colored (I suspect most people take care of this during post production and less so when actually filming). Another thing is that if you are adding weight to the front of the lens, then I believe that you are throwing off the natural balance of the gimbal. With the aircraft turned off, the camera should be balanced naturally; you move the camera with your hand and it stays in that position, neither tilting up nor down. By balancing the camera the gimbal motors will only need to put in minimal effort to keep the camera balanced during flight. By adding weight to the front of the camera, you will be making the gimbal motors work a LITTLE bit harder since you have thrown off the natural balance of the gimbal. It is probably insignificant, but maybe it would cause a slight extra battery drain since the gimbal motors have to work slightly harder to keep everything balanced???
Yeah, what you said, buddy. Obviously. None of these guys. Have any real experience as, professional, photographers/cinematographers/videographers. And some of those neutral density filters are adjustable by rotating a ring. Yeah that's called a polarizing filter. And the neutral density of that. Generally is between 2 and 4. What blows my mind. No mention of skylight or UV filters. So many of these videos could use a UV filter. Or a polarizing filter. And most of these guys are clueless dummies. So this guy uses a clear glass filter instead of a UV or skylight filter. Go figure? I mean, hello! Pick up a book on photography! Before you decide you want to shoot commercially with drones. Like Jethro the brain surgeon. I don't think there are any brain surgeons with the name of Jethro? I wouldn't go to a brain surgeon with the name of Jethro. And I had to have brain surgery! 14 years ago! And an actual neurosurgeon did that. Not Jethro. Not Jethro here.
Peter, thanks for the post and I like using it so I can remember where and when I flew in case I want to head back there again down the road. Something so retro about using a pencil and paper to record the details too.
Thank you for this info! I am starting to use my P4 commercially and can not allow myself any accidents or conflicts with my customers just because I don't have some of this small things in my working box...
Peter, I agree that if you're doing this commercially a few of these accessories are "must have" upgrades for the drone. I appreciate the post and hope you sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
Great info. Thanks so much. Funny but I just bought a p3 standard and I got most of the stuff mentioned except for the carbon fiber blades and the lens nd 4. Will look in to that today. Awesome info. Thanks again.🙏🏾😊👍
Excellent video, thank you. I’m now going to use the prop guards on my new Mavic Mini. Please do an in depth video on how to use the Kittyhawk app. Many Thanks
Welcome to the family and I hope you get a lot of time for flying now that the weather is starting to improve. Be sure to stop back often as I'll have a lot of content posting. Rick

I started flying my 1st drone, potensic in Dec 2023, I've instinctively done many of ur topics.
I agree with every bit of what you list. Great job.
just watched this video 5 years later, great video rick. luv from uk

Rick
Great Video. learning so much on TH-cam.
Great stuff. I am a brand new Phantom 3 owner and I appreciate the tips. Video is excellent and well done. Thanks!
I'll be subscribing now
Thanks for the post and I am so glad you're enjoying the clips. I have a lot more content coming and appreciate your support. Rick
Just got my Mavic Pro yesterday. Very helpful. Thanks for publishing Rick.
very helpful just learning and trying to figure out what I need when I do purchase my first drone Thanks
Great info. I'm glad I have ordered most of these parts,,,mainly because I determined I would need them. Thanks.
Great informative video . Us newbies appreciate you.
I'm a beginner and just wanted to say thanks for the great advice. Greetings from Australia! :)
Very informative, thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
Steve, you're welcome and I'm glad you enjoyed the content. Be sure to throw me a sub so you don't miss anything. Rick
Accurate fast and well presented ,I always enjoy watching your videos ,keep up the good work
This video is what I was really looking for, informative, understandable, and very helpful.
Rick
Thanks for making this video. I just got a phantom 3 standard and I want to protect it. Great info.
That was the most informative video I've seen yet. Well done.
Fantastic video! I have reading, and watching videos on drones for two weeks for beginners and what I need eventually this is by far the most informative video I have seen so far, ty for taking the time to help a beginner like my self. Keep the videos coming.... I subscribed
GREAT VIDEO!!! Thanks so much... I'm new to the drone world and your video was GREAT!!!! Thanks again!
Bill, thanks for the support and the comments. Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything and welcome to an amazing hobby!
Another valuable presentation. Thank you.
Barry, thanks for the kind words and I am working on an updated version for the Spark and the Mavic Pro so be sure to check back if you fly one of those copters. Rick
I always appreciate your uploads. Very informative.
Terrific information. Thank you!!!
I fly a phantom 4 advanced +. I would have added to the list a lanyard for the controller. Not much worse could happen than dropping the controller either in flight or not. Was the first accessory I bought. It should have been included with the drone. Great video.
Thanks for the info! I'm new to all of this.
Awesome video! You have a nice approach. I'll be back for more!
Thanks for the tips :) Waving from The Bahamas !
Thanks for the time in making this video, very informative for this newbie
Very good job as always Rick good info
Thx
Michael
Good information and presentation
Blue skies
Great advice as I am just starting out on Drone Flying.
always clear and relevant informational videos...keep em coming!!!
Hello Mr....in process of buying a (PHT4).... Love your advice & info's....Thank you for sharing...
Thanks for the compliment and you're going to love that quad. It flies like a dream and captures some amazing video and pictures. Good Luck with it! Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything we post. I have a lot of new material I'm working on.
you seem like an absolute legend of a dude!!! love the videos, so helpfull and interesting, keep it up!
Great information! Thanks for putting this video together!
Great video. If only you realize how much I have learned and gained from your sharing! Keep up the good work.
Dean, thanks for saying that and I'm happy I can help a little with your hobby. I have a lot more content posting soon so be sure and stop back! Rick
Very nice and simple advice! Thanks.
Good video, very informative!
Another informative video. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. It was very helpful and informative.
I'm glad you enjoyed it and I am working on another one as an update with some of the newer accessories. Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
Fantastic useful advice!
Excellent video!
Rick is the man. My new best friend that I have never met. Lol
It is probably insignificant, but maybe it would cause a slight extra battery drain since the gimbal motors have to work slightly harder to keep everything balanced???
weigh the lens , add equal counterweight to rear of camera, blutak works well. us selotape to secure if needed. rebalance achieved
Love your channel. Looking forward to you doing a video on recommended accessories for the DJI Spark.
Super Nerdy that you said a log book is fun to use... however I would have to 100 percent agree with that statement !
Rick
For the Mavic Air I suggest a MicroSDHC to USB3 adapter, and a pair of tweezers to remove/replace the card into the drone.
Just ordered two screen hoods for my tablet, great advice.
Great info. Thanks so much. Funny but I just bought a p3 standard and I got most of the stuff mentioned except for the carbon fiber blades and the lens nd 4. Will look in to that today. Awesome info. Thanks again.🙏🏾😊👍
Regular guy helped me out.. thank you
Excellent video, thank you. I’m now going to use the prop guards on my new Mavic Mini.
Please do an in depth video on how to use the Kittyhawk app. Many Thanks
Liked the Tips and the explanations..
Thank you...Keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching and posting. Make sure you sub the channel so you don't miss any of the content I'll be posting this week. Thanks, Rick
Love the video! Thanks for sharing the info.
Thanks for the great video, sage advice for someone new to the AP platform!
Welcome to the family and I hope you get a lot of time for flying now that the weather is starting to improve. Be sure to stop back often as I'll have a lot of content posting. Rick
Looking to become new droner. Your video was great and very informative.
