I'm cautiously optimistic about this new edition. The only thing I'm sad to lose is the fighter specific abilities. I don't see the warscroll completely replacing the faction deck (which I wont miss) and the individual abilities of the fighers. So some faction flavour will inevitably be lost, and I fear that will lead to more warbands feeling more same-y.
I am in the same place. I hope they have some abilities on fighters. As I said elsewhere I can't imagine using the Champion without Cleave, or the Harvester without Scything for example.
I think that this changes are a fucking shit. People simplifying everything to make it faster and less thought-provoking, taking away freedom and depth from the game, and eliminating the endless possibilities offered by deck building.
All my Warhammer stuff has been in the loft for the past 2 years after old age arthritis stopped me from being able to glue minis together. However, the Underworlds reboot has made me change my mind. Not too many miniatures to put together, and painting has always been my favourite part; I'll be picking this up and giving it a shot.
Lovely concise rundown thanks. Lots of situational rules gone which streamlines the whole thing nicely. The crit update seems like an elegant solution to that one dice feelbad while also introducing some clever little buffs/debuffs. Did I hear right that if you have a turn left but all your players have been activated you get to activate a player for a second time? If so is that new to this edition? I also think the change in card design is an improvement but also a matter of personal taste. The ploy and objective cards have a combination of photos and edited art to make them dynamic which is arguably a similar amount of creative work involved and very much not a cynical cost cutter.
Thanks for watching! The rule is that once all fighters have charged then fighters can be activated again, though they can't charge again. If one fighter has moved but not charged then charged fighters may not be used again. This rule has been around for a couple of years now but is different from the early days.
Now after a week with it, I'm generally fine with the changes and excited for the new season. The ones I have small to major issues with are: (1) Rolloff (tiny complaint); more dice are just fun to roll, and less likely to tie, (2) Single board (minor complaint); banning longboarding was good but I miss the variability of the slight stagger plus how the battlefield changes with the combinations of four sides of two boards, (3) Crit change (minor complaint); I like going to a success only, but I wish they had implemented exploding crits, just so there's an outside chance of one die beating a four dice roll through an improbable series of multiple crits, (4) Card art (major complaint); it's just not the same appearance and impact, and (5) Units (major complaint); my favorite warband is Rippa's Snarlfangs who are unplayable at the moment.. Unrelated to gameplay the cost cutting is obvious and I find it frustrating that they didn't pass some savings on to us, but that's GW and its not like I need it to live.
Might have to house rule some new rules into the Old 3-4 players game setup. I have a group that loves to play this that way, it's quite a fun slug fest.
Great stuff guys. Can’t wait for the live stream coming soon! I’ve set my reminder 💪 nice one for that!!! Unfortunately I might have to wait a while to get the game as I’ve been very lightly, oh so subtly, just casually hinting to my other half that this would make for an excellent present for someone (I don’t know who that may be) for Christmas! Annoyed may be an understatement if it doesn’t happen tho 😂 fingers crossed
I'm gonna miss the graphically articulated tales such as, "The Whacky Adventures of Mollog and Co", and "Headsmen's Heads: Where Are They Now? (In Space)"
I feel like turns are much better than activations, more simple and natural language. Plus a lot of the time you're drawing a card or something, and not activating anything.
Interesting, I’ve stop with Underworlds long time ago because it was getting a bit too much 😅 Already made an preorder for new edition 😁 Board like arena may be a big thing. Hexes are smaller, almost the same size as Stormact base 🤔
Thanks for that brilliant video chaps - most useful indeed. One question I have as a long-time player - can we use old warbands, such as my ironskull orcs in the new game?
Yes, some of them are part of the 16 and will have purchasable cards, another 13 will be legal for organised play and will have downloadable cards, the rest will also have downloadable cards but won’t be valid for tournament play (but can still be played casually or wherever TOs allow them)
Off the top of my head. Each player may only delve one objective per turn. I can't remember if players are allowed to delve the same objective as each other but you'd need a lot of push tech to make it happen.
But on following turns it can be flipped back by yourself or your opponent (even the same fighter turn after turn can just sit there flipping it back and forth)
we think so absolutely, much more streamlined and intuitive rules vs what Wintermaw had become, also easier to deck build and work out what you can and can't take.
as someone who struggles with the terrible wording on first edition cards even now I have been playing for over a year, I haven't felt the same on the new cards!!
Maybe I misheard in one of the hype videos but I thought they removed lethal hexes and the red hexes are now stagger. Is that true? That seems like a major change but you didn't mention it. I'd hate to see only lethal hexes disappear since they really make the board unique.
DOH, did we not? Yes that is the case. There are no more lethals. Personally, I'm happy with the change. I found everybody just played round them anyway.
Yeah, I can see why they removed it, it was quite a confusing element for newer starters. But hopefully the magicky warbands will still get things on their warscrolls 🤞
Is terrain from 1e able to be used? I enjoyed using terrain as it added more flavor to the board rather than just a few tokens and the models. I feel as if a board with just models is rather bland. To each their own. If I decide to dive into this game again, assuming I can find opponents, I’m only going to purchase the warbands I like rather than getting them all (Seraphon, here I come). Otherwise, I’ll just stick with Warcry and AOS.
You can reuse the terrain but it’s a little large but should be ok. There’s only a couple of blocked hexes on the board though. The good thing about this version is you don’t have to buy any warbands you don’t want any more
I appreciate your attempt at being optimistic, but there are too many things that annoy me with this new edition. This isn't made easier by the fact that some of the changes, in my opinion, are absolutely unreasonable. No point in going into detail, but let's just say that I won't be playing this new iteration of UW, as I don't really care about "streamlining" my games, or having a more "efficient" board, or having less "clutter" on the cards. The fighter and faction cards were perfectly fine as they were. Perfectly fine. What a stupid, idiotic move by GW.
Guess you didn't play one of the countless terrible warbands with awful rivals decks (blackpowder, velmorn etc) Thankfully 1e isnt going anywhere and you can keep enjoying that :)
I don’t think it’s quite fair to say “I don’t like it, so this is idiotic.” It’s cool to have a difference of opinion or to not like a thing. It’s less cool to imply “my way is the only way.” I don’t play a ton of WHU since I only have a limited opponent pool. I enjoy the current edition in the context of it. I am testing the waters to see if he’s going to go 2e or not. I’m super excited for the upcoming sculpts though, which somewhat forces the issue if I want them. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I’m not one of the hype train “new edition woohoo” folks, but I’m also not being sour over it. I might end up sticking to 1e if my opponent doesn’t want to move. We’ll see how it goes
I for one did. I played Ironskulls, Eyes, Velmorn, Blade Coven, (old) Sepulchral, Despoilers and more. I always played with at least 11 faction cards in my 32 cards (with one exception, Wurmspat). So the loss of faction decks and fighter-specific abilities is felt deeply by me. As for the rest of the changes, I either like them or am neutral. I won’t be picking up the starter yet though, as its contents seem aimed at an introductory level. I’ll pick up the Plaguebearers + their Mastery deck and give the new edition a whirl with them.
@@adaml2910 "countless" is an overused hyperbole. And that's were deck building was interesting, combining some faction cards with universal cards. Would be nice if we could get some female or non binary representation on the show. Given over 50% of people who play AOS fall into those categories, it really feels like you’re missing out on a lot of the core audience.
The only limitation we have on coming to the studio/being on the channel is being close enough and willing to give up your time.
