The first known evidence of the written Chinese was on pieces of bone from the Shang dynasty known as the Oracle Bones. They'd use animal bones or the shells of turtles to carve in each character. They would then heat up the bone until it cracked (if you've seen Avatar the last airbender this might sound familiar).
