    If Haskill was there 'since the beginning' and it involved Jygalagg, personally I think it makes the most sense that Haskill was somehow involved in the curse that turned Jygalagg into Sheogorath in the first place.

      He may be like Barbas, Clavicus Vile's dog. Haskill could well be necesary for Sheogorath to exist as he is. Maybe even the key to the curse itself, a kind of 'receptacle' for Jyggalagg's orderliness, or the suffering he feels at Sheogorath's chaos, I'm not sure.
      Of course, if this were the case, one would think the Greymarch would target him more specifically, instead of leaving him almost completely untouched.

    • @TheCorrodedMan
      @TheCorrodedMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      It might be that he _is_ Jyggalag; rendered down into a subservient chamberlain to his cursed self, forced to watch as a madman with all the strength and power he once possessed tears his orderly realm to pieces day by day, free to feel at peace only during the greymarch, when Sheogorath ceases to exist and the Realm of Order returns, if only for a short while.

      I could write an essay about this idea. But simply put could Haskel mantling Shay/Jig be the direct cause of the curse? Like humans are inatly chaotic and possess every aspect Shay embodies, Haskel mantling Jig led to him gaining all the traits of a mortal, as you walk as them, they to shall then walk as you, making Shay come to be and thus leading to all three being present when it all began. Plus Haskel would of gained from who he mantled and given up aspects to who Jig would become.

    Maybe Haskill was a mortal champion, a pawn in the games that the Daedra often play. Maybe he played a key role in the Daedra's goal to turn Jyggalag into Sheogorath.
    I recall in ESO, Sheogorath has you spar with Haskill a bit. Haskill wielded a big hammer..

    • @randomasgray
      @randomasgray 4 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      The spar against Haskill was because the end of your "quest" needed a "boss". The entire Mages Guild quest line in ESO was a satire on questing in rpgs with a huge moral dilemma at the end to test the player and see if they caught the game that Sheogorath was playing. It is why Haskill sighs after being informed to fight you. He knows what it going on and how fighting him is so pointless. It does nothing to change the narrative that was building under the surface of every piece of the chain. That fight was nothing more than a task to act as the justification to reward you. It was the same set up as every quest to gain the book. The point was never to keep the books from you but rather was a distraction and excuse to provide a reward that wasn't really a reward.

    • @randomasgray
      @randomasgray 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ChadKakashi Yeah especially when you pair it up side by side with the Fighter's Guild quest line in ESO, which does follow the story beats of a traditional rpg main quest chain pretty closely. 1 is deconstructing quest chains and 1 is adhering to the established formula. Lots of people miss this fact because they are so wrapped up in what their part of the Mage Guild quest chain is that they don't see what is really going on. And it ends with Sheogorath hitting you with a moral dilemma on picking personal power or saving her from insanity. Logically you only gain from the personal power choice and only lose with the saving as either way you will be given the library perk to be able to see all books you have read in your journal.

When most think of madness they don’t think of order but instead chaos, however obsession itself is a form of madness so it really does make sense that someone obsessed with order still fits within a realm of madness. Irl OCD to extreme degrees is also considered detrimental and a mental illness. Honestly such a little thing I think many didn’t even notice or consider but it’s brilliant, if the writers intended this observation they’ve earned even more of my respect and thank you for making me aware to such a cool and interesting detail.

    My Theory: Haskill is the remains of the Deadric lord of madness that existed before the mantle was passed to Jygalagg.
    We don't exactly know "how" the other Deadric princes cursed the Lord of Order with the Mantle of Sheogorath, but as we've established they cannot truly create things from nothing.
    I suspect they took the mantle from whom/whatever Haskill was and mantled Jygalagg with the domain of madness. And thusly Haskill became a vestige (literally) of the mad god.

    So . . . what would happen if someone tried to mantle Sheogorath while he and Jyggalag were still united as one?
    Here's my theory for Haskill: When Jygg was first cursed to become Sheo, Jygg didn't turn immediately (just as Sheo doesn't become Jygg all at once). As madness set in the Lord of Order sought desperately to find a way to forestall or escape what was happening to him. He no doubt understood the nature of the curse, being who he was, and so sought to use his insights of its nature to his advantage.
    Jygg sought out a mortal to mantle the Mad God he had not yet become, likely hoping that he could cheat the curse in this way. He found one and set about the process... however, as his immaculate mind slipped into lunatic anarchy, he missed a critical detail: how the curse and the mantling process would interfere with one another. The man we now know as Haskill no doubt did mantle the still-unfinished Sheogorath at least partially... but any curse that can turn a Prince of Order insane is surely enough to play merry havoc with a mortal. I theorize that in Haskill's case, the curse caused his nature to "flip" -- instead of a mad man becoming a mad god, what we got was a demi-daedra obsessed with orderliness to the point of absurdity. His creation would have linked him inexorably to his master... but his master was no longer who he once was, and so Haskill's tangled pseudo-mantling knit him to the will of madness instead of order. Just imagine it: being order-obsessed and yet unceasingly loyal to madness as a concept. If that doesn't sum up Haskill in a hand-basket, I don't know what does.
    This theory meets all the criteria: he was there "in the beginning" with both Jygg and Sheo (the beginning of the cycle of the curse, that is), he mantled Sheo and was then separated (incomplete mantling effected by the curse), and ultimately became a daedric remnant.

    • @logangoerks236

    • @MaxM227
      @MaxM227 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@diosoth A very old comment but I’ll drop my thought.
      Jyggalag stated he has never been beaten in combat before the CoC which seems key to finishing the mantling process.
      So it’s also just as likely Haskill could not defeat Jyggalag in combat and was thrusted out from the pseudo position of Sheogorath after Jyggalag returned to the station upon that Greymarches completion.

    Haskill: The contingency is a remote one, sir.
    Sheo: Never mind. Let us suppose it.
    Haskill: Very good, sir.
    Cheesemonger Extraordinaire: Let us now suppose that you biffed that tiger senche. And let us further suppose that word reached its mother that you'd done so. Now, what would you expect the attitude of that mother to be?

    its funny how jyggalags own chamberlain went insane due to the overwhelming sense of order his late master had, further adding to the dichotomy of the shivering isles. how constant order can break the mind especially order without purpose

    Haskill might be an eternal part of the realm of madness because Order is ultimately the highest form of madness. For what could be more mad then to attempt to sort madness? To bring together randomness, insanity, and spontaneous and force it into a pretty order, would take quite the madman.

    Hes not that organized. If you complete the shivering isles main quest before you complete the sheogorath shrine quest back in cyrodiil. When you make your offering. He remarks that praying to yourself, to give yourself a quest is your business. Since youre the boss. Upon completion he remarks that you probably didnt need to go through all that. And that he shouldve remembered to just give you wabbajack.

    Perhaps Haskill was the means by which Jyggalag was cursed with madness. The other daedra pushed a mortal to seek perfect order in such extremes that it became a form of madness, mantling Jyggalag while also cursing him with madness creating Sheogorath

    I always looked at Haskill as being the tiny shred of Jyggalag that remained within Sheogorarh and, conversely, that obsessive shred of madness within Jyggalag do it's possible that it's that tiny speck of both that Haskill retained from his enmantling.

  • @kaimagnus5760
    @kaimagnus5760 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm more interested in WHAT Haskil is than who. My personal theory is that he's kind of an ancor point. When Sheogorath is in charge he is the small piece of order that keeps the chaos held togeather and during The Grey March he's the small fragment of Chaos that stops The Grey March from completly destroying everything. Thus how he was there "From the begining".

    • @ingonyama70
      @ingonyama70 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I'm thinking. Haskill seems like a kind of halfway point between Sheogorath and Jyggalagg, so it actually makes sense that he'd be the axis around which the whole curse revolves.
      Daedra can't create or destroy, so we can't just blink him out of existence. After the Hero of Kvatch mantles, I assume Haskill either stays around for the transitional period and then returns to wherever he came from, or Herogorath just decides to keep him around because we like him.

    I think that Haskill and Dyus are both similar to Barbas. Sheogorath and Jygalag both wanted and right-hand man so they took a little bit of themselves and shaped it into a unique Daedra suited to their purposes.

  • @fireblast133

    I remember a fanfic I read once that said Haskill was a dragon, one that gave itself up to the mad god to allow the others including Alduin to pass through the shivering isles on their way to mundus, as tasked by Akatosh, before Alduin's descent into tyrannical rule. It was kind of an alternate story to Skyrim, where Alduin had bested the Dragonborn.
    Sheogorath wanted mortals to survive so he could continue to be entertained, so he ferried them through, and tasked Haskill with defending the gate, allowing Haskill to unleash his full power there (a Dragon empowered by the mad god). (Part of the theory why he usually acts amicable to the player, as they are usually the only thing keeping mundus safe at such times, so he gets to keep his entertainment. You're already doing him a favor carrying out your destiny essentially.)

    Because nobody can become Azura, nobody can become Dagon, nobody can become Mephala.
    But Champions taking up the mantle of 'become crazy (with power)'?
    Voluntary?
    That just reeks of Daedra.

    i like to think hes the literal shadow of sheogorath, the broken remains of a cursed god of order, the one peice of him that will never go away. Like jyggalags power was doomed to chaos, and haskill is his broken consciousness watching it all happen over and over again...
    the greymarch, the jyggalag we fight, the sheogorath we meet is just his thoughts going in a mad endless loop, while haskill must always be around to tidy things up and serve.

    I have a feeling that Haskill and Dyus were one once. And that mortal mantled both the MadGod and Jyggalag as part of the deadra princes curse upon him in a forgotten Kalpa, a kalpa home to Mytheria. After taking on the role of two Gods, both intrinsically opposite yet with eerie similarities, he became split as a result and became a Vestige. His Anuic Animus now corrupted by Padomaic Vestige/Chaotic Creation mixed with the curse placed upon the original split him into separate entities as a result.

    This is probably a stretch but could he be a vestige of the prince of order? But one created right before the curse and brought over to madness? Or perhaps a vestige that Sheogorath keeps around because there's that little part of him that's still the prince of order?

  • @fingerboxes

    Maybe Haskill was a previous attempt at breaking the Greymarch but he wasn't actually strong enough so instead of breaking Jyggalag and Sheogorath apart he ended up just getting shattered himself.

    And what if Haskill is a dormant part of Sheogorath? What if he is actually Jyggelag watching over Sheogorath and his realm (keeping it in order) in waiting for a champion who can mantle the mad god aspect of Sheogorath, so that Jyggelag can break free and become himself again. As an advisor of Sheogorath he can both be the voice of reason and advise him to summon a champion in order to break the cycle of the Greymarch,

    Given Sheogorath's tendency to will things into existence on any and all whims, it may be more likely that the Haskill we meet is something akin to a clone, a duplicate of the Haskill that mantled, rather than the 'original.' Since mantling would suggest the original Haskill ceased to be, with Sheogorath entirely supplanting him in body and soul, it's entirely possible that the Madgod had what we might call a pang of nostalgia upon the mantling, in the process willing a version of himself back into independent existence, but as a daedric vestige since Haskill's soul was now Sheogorath.
    For that matter, Dyus could be a similar case, with Jyggalag manifesting a vestige duplicate of a mortal that mantled him as a means to first keep his library, then manage anything he didn't feel like dealing with. In this case, both Haskill and Dyus would technically have always been vestiges, never having been the Haskill and Dyus who existed prior to mantling, but would rather be replicated manifestations of those effectively-gone former-mortals.
