Hey Scotty, my father has a 2003 Dodge Durango SLT our engine is shaking it sounds like it one for the cylinders it not the engine mounts and all the plugs have been changed could it be the distributor or should we just junk it for a Corolla? It’s got 163k miles.

Why would that be a problem? People work on cars in the street all the time. Someone even set up a DIY spray booth and did their camper van on the public green here, nobody minded. Land of the free?

I got a 2010 Silverado and, so far, I haven't spend too much on it. I might got one of the few "good ones". I'm not a Chevy guy but, at the time, it was cheaper than Ford (near 5 gran) and Dodge (near 4 gran) from the dealer's lot.

@@slowgoat6089 - Moog is decent, but OE parts would be the best. Hunt around online. Often times you'll be able to find the OE Toyota parts you're looking for for prices that rival the other brands like Moog.
That's a replacement ball joint that didn't break, looks like whomever installed it never used the cotter pin, and the nut loosened, and then finally sheared off allowing the stud to come out of the spindle...too bad someone didn't actually look at the suspension on the car 2 weeks ago when he was talking about how great the a/c was....

A thorough check of the suspension components is so crucial. You could easily end up buying a car for $2,000 and then find out later that it needs another $2,000 in suspension repairs before it’s actually safe to drive.
This exact thing happened to me last week with no warning. The stud on the ball joint broke off. Had to replace the upper and lower ball joint/control arm, cv axle, and the outer tie rod end but the locking nut is stuck on the tie rod so having a bear of a time getting it off.
Anthony, put a jack or a jack stand under the spindle right next to the bolt you have to remove then just hit it with a substantial hammer ( 2 lbs or there about). The tapered part will Usually come right out.

When I was driving a lot on the freeway I saw a lot of this. Cost me over $5000.00 to keep my Buick running it finally fell apart at 127,000 miles. Piece of crap..happy with my Elantra..
i been driving for over 35 years last time i broke down i would say 32 years ago- i drive old cars now one is 21 years old the other 20 years old both run great
Own a 99 Buick Century. Ive only replaced parts on it, mostly due to sitting for years (one owner who passed away-son inherited it , it sat outside) Anyway, all in all my Buick has been a really good car for all that it had been through. What I find interesting is that it is only up to 80, 000 miles now and the motor itself is in really good shape. Replaced a belt and had oil changes..thats about it besides other fluid replacements..The tie rods, control arm, bushing, tires, lug nuts, ect have all been replaced..next struts and motor mounts. However I feel as if Ive recieved my money back already from the poor little thing. I bought it at 67,000 miles and have had it a year driving it almost daily...Ive just been allowed to work on it slowly..it just dont give up. lol
My neighbor has a older Toyota Camry. Looks pretty close to the year the one in this video is. He literally takes pretty much the entire car apart about every 3 or 4 months. His GF has a 96 Honda Civic and he almost does the same with it. It is great having him next door. Every since I bought my 96 Honda Accord, he has helped me out so much with it. It just goes to show you that you can pretty much keep these cars running forever with some TLC and cussing lol
This happened to me on the driver side...luckily i was driving slow...$1300 to fix at the nearest car shop...then 2 months later the passenger tire fell....again...i was just backing out of a parking space so i was driving slow. I towed it to Pepboys ...a new axel and other parts...i paid $1700 there.
I thought you lived in a beautiful neighborhood of low houses. But now from this pov I realize it's your house (and what you see from your garage) what's really beautiful! You have some depts and tall houses on the other side of the street that completely changes the visual!
98 accord 244000mi. I gonna sell it. Front end was squeaky but tight. About to park and show and same thing happened. Exact same damage....sold for 300. Miss that v tech.
Fast Feets Professionally been breaking parts for over 25 years.Restored dozens of classics at my pad and believe you me the neighbors f-king hate it BIG TIME
That's a scary scenario when driving. The exact same thing happened to my Mustang on my way home from work one morning. I called a tow truck to bring it back to my garage at home, replaced the broken ball joint, pulled the fender back out, and went back into my midnight shift. Wow that was was one of the longest days ever lol. I know now any unusual sound coming from the suspension is a clear indicator to search, and repair immediately.
Still using a 1997 XLT Van with the V10 in it for our church. That Van has around 140k miles on it and still runs superb! Be warned... you HAVE to use the right spark plugs and recommended brakes on them or you will chew through both! They also LOVE to rust along the edge of the roof in that little "trough" or whatever u call it. I had to repair a hole caused by rust and water was leaking into the van. Also, A/C work can be expensive on them.
I'd buy it for a couple hundred. I did the same repair on my Acura. New axel, new outer tie rods, new castle nut and pin, and new ball joints. All with lifetime warranties fixed it right up. 1 alignment later it was driving down the road like a champ. Easy fix for a shadetree guy with couple hours to do. Cost me under $300. Scotty's labor cost is what would cost on this job (charging by the book time for each vs what time it actually took to just do).
I picked up on that also. That is not a normal ball joint wearing out and pulling out of the socket, it looks like the nut backed out. Someone has been working on this thing and didn't put it together right.
I highly recommend those reverse thread sockets (rocket sockets). These things have literally stopped me from scrapping my car after i rounded some bolts. Also useful for removing wheel nuts (also called puzzle locks i think) when you have lost the lock! thanks for the tip about welding Scotty! that's new to me!
Yeah scotty I kept one of those E250 Van's till it had 450k. Drove it over 120 miles everyday till I sold it still running and driving! Friend of mines 03 has over 1 million miles and just put used trans in it to keep doing courier work!
i *nearly* had a same problem with this, thankfully i felt something is wrong with the steering so i checked and found a loose part and took it to a mechanic before its too late
@@nickmccain6598 if there's no play in it, then you might be ok. Scotty mentioned there was play in it before the wheel actually fell off. My Camry has 177,000 miles on it. I bought it at around 124,000. I haven't done any ball joints yet, not sure if the previous owner(s) did. 🤷🏾♂️
I still have my 97 Corolla I put new ball joints struts and tires after I bought it. Some people just don't know. If you do the work yourself you have hundreds!
Scotty I have a 1979 Z28 I bought it brand new in April 7 9 I've had it from day one has got pretty 1000 original clobbers on it and every small paint numbers matching horse meat cleaver he ran to the motor Interiors original BC it's a big red Never Seen Rain never seen snow and this was some money Trans Am as good as with the guys as it is it is it will be worth something
Scotty why do you hate Chrysler/dodge? I bought a 2000 Dodge neon 5 years ago with 29000 miles on it and since then I've driven it all over the country it now has 88,000 miles on it. The AC still blows cold and the interior is in great shape. I learned how to work on cars replacing suspension parts and doing general upkeep it's a very easy car to work on and has never let me down.
In theory. Having a mechanic check out a used car is a good idea. Buuuut. Not everyone is like Scotty. I took my used 1995 Ford bronco to the mechanic once. Did a used car inspection. Paid em to change the oil (hey it was cheap, and I just got the car) and the oil filter. They looked over everything, well at least that's what they charged me for. And gave me a list of "issues". Half the list was fiction, and a scheme. Changed the oil two months later my self. Black as night. And the oil filter was dated for almost 3 years before I purchased the car.... What a scam. Since I've dumped endless dollars in the car and worked on it my self. With help from your channel of course. Thanks Scotty for everything you do and keep up the good work.
This happened to my car. The ball joint slipped out. We were hearing this grinding noise and could not for the life of us figure it out. Luckily my dad happened to have a ball joint kit. I now know how to check the ball joint and tie rod for wear. The wheel was scraped on the inside but still usable. The strut appears to be fine. Been driving on it for 3 months since.
I see a lot of Dodge work trucks that have the lower ball joints fail. A friend of mine who has a Cummins 2500 replaced his at about 80k with high quality replacement ball joints just as a precaution. He plans on keeping this truck a long time.
Scotty been subscribed for years. Love yuh and I cant lose yuh ! So whatever it takes cause after all you are my go to for the knowledge and voice of reason! I gotta show my love and purchase me some shirts . Just been with you since 2012
Many years ago I had a Honda Accord hatchback, and an odd rear upper ball joint failed sitting in my driveway. I didn't do DIY back then. I foolishly used a strong, over-sized spring clamp to hold the parts together and successfully drove it to the shop. Later realized how lucky I was to make it that 8.5 miles driving 45 mph.
i let my whee bearing go super bad on me on my last BMW...was backing out and the whole axle broke off. I thank God it didn't happen earlier when I was on I-5 looking for a job as I probably would have lost my life/ been seriously injured. To replace the wheel bearing was at most $300 parts included, but instead I lost my whole car...lesson learned. Fix the small issues before they become gigantic ones.
As the balljoints lacked of inspection on 2008 Nissan Versa, the right side one popped out in November. That pulled the right drive shaft apart. I had to replace both control arms and the drive shaft on the right side.
My 94 Buick LeSabre did this to me and left me stranded in the middle of knowhere in Montana. South Dakota was my destination. It was a very sad day considered the engine was well kept
Appears to be a setup for a video to me. A cotter key and big nut just do not come undone and ball joints can be a pain to get out anyway. Perhaps a previous owner wanted to replace the lower ball joint and did not have the tool, then is a flash bulb thought...removed the key and nut and drove to hit every pothole he could. Then again it could have been that cat from Chrysler.
Yikes. I had this happen a few years back. It started with just a squeaking sound. I ignored it, and sometime later, the right lower ball joint failed.
You could get ball joint, axle shaft & strut assembly for a hair over 100 bucks online but the other side will need it as well so it's over 2 bills for parts only.
Scotty I have a 1984 Cadillac Coupe DeVille and the oil pressure light is always coming on but the oil light goes away when I step on the gas it turns on when it idles and when I come to stops I change the oil sending unit the the suction pump are the oil pump and suction pump the same thing or two different things it drives good it doesn't overheat or make any type of noise in the engine what could this be Scotty
Even the cat ran away from that one. I took one look at that mess and knew it was a total suspension rebuild right away. A friend of mine way back in high school had a 1977 Trans Am and he drove that thing like he stole it. It had just the base 350 with a 4 barrel but it was indestructible. It took everything he dished out on it.
It would be cool if Scotty had the connections from being in the biz for so long to find someone to pass this great vehicle on to , like someone in training who has the resources and wants to work on it, instead of having to scrap it. Thanks for the helpful video that’s an especially good alert/reminder to FWD/AWD vehicle owners!😐!
Ive had a ball joint come out before, it is a scary experience, especially knowing that it could have happened on the highway. There is no warning, only a small wobble that only a mechanic can find when checking for it

Scotty, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
This happened to me on the driver side...luckily i was driving slow...$1300 to fix at the nearest car shop...then 2 months later the passenger tire fell....again...i was just backing out of a parking space so i was driving slow. I towed it to Pepboys ...a new axel and other parts...i paid $1700 there.
don't you have your suspension checked out??
Drive till the wheel fall off literally
I thought you lived in a beautiful neighborhood of low houses. But now from this pov I realize it's your house (and what you see from your garage) what's really beautiful! You have some depts and tall houses on the other side of the street that completely changes the visual!
That's what I call getting your money's worth!
Ride it til the wheels fall off😎🔧
98 accord 244000mi. I gonna sell it. Front end was squeaky but tight. About to park and show and same thing happened. Exact same damage....sold for 300. Miss that v tech.
WOW!
This is where it's good to know how to fix it yourself😁
Being from Quebec/Canada, when Scotty mention Montreal or Quebec I like it :)
Or Ontario when he mentions the Toyota plant in Cambridge Ontario
Great job Scotty I'm your true fan from Jamaica 🇯🇲
hello!
Hi scotty I have a misubishi galant 1991 it shut off sometimes wen I turn on the AC..
If you go to junk yard you could probably get the parts for like 100 bucks you could put it back together in a weekend or 2
2:28 Corporate "FAT CAT" working for Chrysler sabotages Toyota, runs away from scene of crime.
Sad. We had a Camry of that same vintage. I LOVED that car, a '94 V6 LE. Try to encourage them to fix it. it sounds great.
Your neighbors must be watching you like, "I've been waiting 50 some odd years for this guy to not give two craps about cars. And I'm still waitin!"
witheredandobsolete
All of them want him to move away.
I wouldn’t want my neighbor working on cars next to my house
@@fastfeets2695
if his neighbor needed their car repaired, they wouldn't want him to move away, they would want him to come over n fix their car.
Hey, wait a sec, didn't Scotty inspect this car for the owner a few weeks ago?
That's what I was thinking. If not it looks just like that one
@@midnitestate I think it was a Corolla, but I would have sworn he also checked out an old beater Camry for a customer recently.
Where is the nut on the lower ball joint?
I picked up on that also. That is not a normal ball joint wearing out and pulling out of the socket, it looks like the nut backed out. Someone has been working on this thing and didn't put it together right.
Scotty probably doesn't want involvement if someone identifies the last mechanic to work on the front suspension and there's litigation.
My dad used to have a Toyota Tacoma and the ball joint came off while he was driving, bought it used and it was well taken cared off.
Oooh, scary! Just imagine that happening on the highway! Then you would really be in trouble!
That Camry just wanted to be back on camera with Scotty again.
Yeah scotty I kept one of those E250 Van's till it had 450k. Drove it over 120 miles everyday till I sold it still running and driving! Friend of mines 03 has over 1 million miles and just put used trans in it to keep doing courier work!
Lol I remember seeing this car in a previous video. 🤷♂️
Good thing it's now going
That happend to my moms 1999 Honda Accord coupe v6... I was 5 I will never forget how much it scared me. There is still a groove in the pavement
Previous owner probably hit a curb while talking on the cellphone. Also his suspension isnt OEM.
i *nearly* had a same problem with this, thankfully i felt something is wrong with the steering so i checked and found a loose part and took it to a mechanic before its too late
This car again..😂😂😂
Loose Nut Case 😂
How many miles are on this gem?
@@nickmccain6598 I think it was almost 250,000, if I remember correctly.
@@poldariser8686 and I thought I waited too long to replace ball joints at 130k
@@nickmccain6598 if there's no play in it, then you might be ok. Scotty mentioned there was play in it before the wheel actually fell off. My Camry has 177,000 miles on it. I bought it at around 124,000. I haven't done any ball joints yet, not sure if the previous owner(s) did. 🤷🏾♂️
Nice to see that you are willing to help a guy out with an older car ... you are still a good dude friend ...
What mechanics won't tell you, cars are always a money pit for the most part. 😁
It's said that having a car is the same having somebody sick in the family. (Talking $$$).
Ah, nobody told you that, there is no freedom on earth... And when you buy something, you not own it, but the thing you buy owns you!
I still have my 97 Corolla I put new ball joints struts and tires after I bought it. Some people just don't know. If you do the work yourself you have hundreds!
So once you get a hoopty car up on a jack, do you now say "that car's all jacked up"?
Was it a loose or missing ball joint nut that let the joint pop out of spindle because the joint was not broken.
Hi Scotty, you're the best!!! 😃😃😃
hello and thanks!
Both vehicles I bought used I did balljoints and tie rods first thing. Never had issues, and I know its good to go!
That poor cammy, can only imagine how the previous owner lived their life.
They didn't care because it's a Toyota you don't fix'em. Sorry way to think of a vehicle.
That Camry is too nice to go to the junk yard
right. people in the rust-belt would love to have that car. it would get fixed.
The trick with the long screwdriver (or anything you can fit) on the brake pedal is also a way to check your brake lights.
Rev up your endless money pit!🚗💨
Time to go outside and redline the old Dakota.
Rev up your clunkers
Scotty why do you hate Chrysler/dodge? I bought a 2000 Dodge neon 5 years ago with 29000 miles on it and since then I've driven it all over the country it now has 88,000 miles on it. The AC still blows cold and the interior is in great shape. I learned how to work on cars replacing suspension parts and doing general upkeep it's a very easy car to work on and has never let me down.
"Commence the wiggling !!!"
I miss the Old Prospector
@@jamespfitz ...he comes complete with night vision goggles !!!
Jam/weld the old drive shaft and convert it to 1 wheel drive.
My friend once had brokend driveshaft and that was how he got to mechanic.
And before you buy a used car, DON’T take it to Firestone.
Chuck Finley or Midas ...not Ever!
Also, AFTER you buy a used car don’t take it to Firestone!!
Thanks Scotty for everything you do and keep up the good work.
junk yard, shows chevrolet dealer image hahaha
Literally.
Just buy cheap parts from 🇨🇳 installed it and keep driving for another year.
We don’t do that anymore. Quality parts, from reliable sources.
China can suck it.
