  • Joel at Earth Tools walks through the assembly procedures for the PTO engagement system in a BCS walk-behind tractor equipped with taper-3-jaw type PTO shaft. This video depicts the "redesigned" PTO slider & gear system that was introduced in 2012, and is sold as a replacement for all models with this PTO type.

I just did this procedure last week. Thanks for posting all the videos! I spent some time talking to one of your employees (I think named Christian?) who was very helpful. After disassembly and talking to people at Earthtool, I ordered my parts and the pliers and received them VERY QUICKLY.
A few observations from my experience:
    1) Don't even THINK about trying to do this without the special pliers, I just don't see how it could be done.
    2) The pipe shown is 1 1/4 black iron pipe. Pipe is measured as inside diameter and 1 1/4 inch is not common, but is available. You may have to get this at an old time hardware store or from a plumber. It is the type of pipe used for gas lines. I think the one I bought was 12 inches long.
    3) Although Joel did this by himself in the video, and I was able to eventually do this by myself, it would definitely go easier with two people, with the 2nd person placing and holding the pipe.
    4) I had a few misfires when striking the pipe with the deadblow hammer I was using. I ended up switching to a very small sledge type hammer and got it the first time. The striking force doesn't need to be great, but does need to be "decisive".
Thanks again for the service and for all the info you put on youtube.

It is possible to get the balls and spring in position without special tool... but rather difficult... place pto shaft snugly in vice (but not too tight) slide front cover over shaft just enough to expose the hole where the spring and ball go and allow front cover to rest on vice jaws... with a pair long needle nose pliers depress the balls into the hole and lightly tap on the drive side of the pto shaft (that is facing up) until the balls are retained by the bearing... install c clip and slider gear on pto shaft... place a large socket or piece of pipe on top of the slider gear by sliding it over the shaft... remove shaft and front cover from vice and flip over so implement side of pto shaft faces up and place socket or piece of pipe on top of vice jaws so drive side of pto shaft hangs between the jaws(remember to keep holding everything together on the shaft while flipping it over or the balls will pop out) ... tap implement side of pto shaft until c clip seats...check c clip placement by gently tapping on pto drive end of shaft and looking for movement.
Doing it this way will work but will likely cause you some amount of frustration as it did me... so is the joy of owning a BCS...
