This Is the Biggest Danger of Progressive Christianity...

  • As LGBTQ+ activism and acceptance have assimilated into mainstream culture, so have they assimilated into Christianity. Progressive Christianity continues to grow in popularity, and among a lot of places, Progressive Christians have taken to Instagram to share what they believe.
In this video, I look at the Instagram page for "1946 the Movie" (which is a documentary currently being made by Progressive Christians about how the word 'homosexual' didn't appear in the bible until 1946) and discuss what I believe to be the true danger of Progressive Christianity. (Spoiler alert: It doesn't automatically have to do with your stance on homosexuality.)

Nice to see you as a professing Christian witnessing to a biblical Gospel. Love the grace in this video as well as the truth that we are all broken people who need to be continually shaped by the word.

Hi Josiah, long time no see!
I really appreciate your willingness to address such a contentious issue in a respectful way and I like how you emphasized the importance of reading scripture objectively, rather than through the lens of our own emotions or desires.
But, since iron sharpens iron, I would like to offer a bit of a contrarian perspective to help further the discussion.
I agree with nearly everything you said, but I don't necessarily think that the owners of the page are being "irresponsible" with what they're saying.
Many Christians approach LGBTQ youth with the message that this aspect of their identity is sinful and needs to be changed. If not, then they are unrepentant, living in sin, and will go to hell. Many of these people approach God asking Him to change them, but notice that no matter how much they ask, their homosexual urges still remain. This leads them to feel that their very existence is sinful and that God doesn't care enough to help them despite their desperate pleas. After enough of this emotional turmoil, many of these people conclude either that God doesn't exist, or if He does, that He doesn't love them, and they leave the faith in response.
If a Christian genuinely believes that homosexuality is not sinful, and they then seek to evangelize to the LGBTQ community, it suddenly becomes very important to emphasize that Christianity is not as hateful and judgemental as they believe it to be and that God loves and accepts them as they are. I think the owners of the page might actually agree with the points you're making, but emphasizing acceptance may be necessary (at least at first) when reaching out to a community that has only experienced condemnation.
Sorry for the long post, but that's just something to think about. Keep up the great content man!

Joseph! So glad to hear from you!
I really appreciate you reaching out and articulating your thoughts here. I think you make a really good point in saying that emphasizing the acceptance of Jesus when evangelizing to a group that has mostly known condemnation is perhaps the best way to bridge the gap between the two. I hadn't viewed the situation through that lens before. It reminds me of Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 9:20-22 where he says, "To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews." In order to properly evangelize for Christ, we have to put ourselves in the unique shoes of everyone we come across so that we're able to share with them the particular aspect of Jesus they need to hear most. I appreciate you reminding me of that!
I think I become apprehensive though when ministries begin with Jesus's acceptance but end there as well. Regardless of the sin we struggle with, Jesus loves us and welcomes us before we're clean and presentable, and for that reason, I agree that any evangelical conversation should start with discussing His acceptance of us. But attached to His acceptance of us is the new process of sanctification which involves turning from our old, sinful ways of living and following the way He called us to live in the bible. I think some ministries fail to teach or emphasize this second aspect of encountering Christ, which can lead to the misconception that He expects no change from us at all.
Despite my own apprehension of this page's ministry, I appreciate how you are able to give them the benefit of the doubt. I certainly could learn to do that more. I hope my thoughts make for a decent response to what you said, and I truly appreciate you calling me out with love!
I hope you're doing well and to hear more from you in the future!

Thanks Elijah! I'm just trying to speak the truth of God's word with love. I feel like that's more effective for the gospel than just sharing knee jerk reactions lol.
