Today we're doing a quick walk around and side by side comparison of the 2011 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special (V-Rod) 1250cc and the 2012 Yamaha Stryker 1300 V-Twin cruiser. This is not a comprehensive, or in depth, review; rather, a side by side look at the two motorcycles and brief discussion. I do these videos so that interested consumers can get an up close look and see what some of the differences are between the two bikes. Enjoy!

Compare whatever you want brotha, haters gonna hate regardless.
My heart is with the stryker.
i prefer it too
Lol. That's for sure. Cant please em all. Lol.
Stryker for the win in all categories, especially in looks
Fun find. I actually own both these bikes. The v Rod has some great power. I love that it’s designed by porche - I think you can really hear it at the higher rpms. I think the Stryker likewise has awesome power. For me it feels stronger off the line. Both are great bikes. My choice. I like the Stryker better.
Nice! Cool to hear from someone who had both and has put some good seat time in. I just get a taste of the different rides between flipping em on the side.
I now own both as well. My stryker has intake, exhaust, pulley swap and Ivan’s flash. I think my stryker is actually a hair faster than my vrod. They top out around the same. 0-60 goes tk the Stryker. 60-100 goes to the vrod. After that they’re fairly close feeling. I plan to get some videos soon though. Knowing the documentary and history behind the vrod and even Harley itself just makes it cool. Even if the Stryker is cheaper, more torque, more dependable and sounds better.... I still love them both. But if I could only have 1.... Yamaha would win.
Hey Jon nice video imma lil late, but I have a 2012 Stryker can you please tell me where can I find that LED turn signal light. I can't find any that fits. Or what can you recomend me switching those lollipop turn signals to for a sleeker look thanks.
Great or just Good?
You are so lucky, AND you have excellent taste.
I am stryker all the way man. I own one same year and I has plenty of power. And yes is very comfortable.
My brother has a V Rod in his collection. I'd pick the V rod but I'm still loving my Switchback. Nice job.
Another great video bro! I’m lucky to have both in my garage, I have the 2012 Stryker same color as yours but I blacked out all “chrome” parts and 240 tire on the back. My 2012 VROD Muscle is a stage 2. Gotta admit that while the VROD muscle is a beast and a hoot to ride, I always enjoy riding the Stryker much better. It handles great for having that 21in front wheel, and agree that it is much more comfortable than the VROD. Hope you enjoy both!
What’d you have to do to get a 240 tire on your styker?
I bought a Stryker last week and am loving how comfortable it is. I feel like I'm on a sofa when I ride. Love it!
I have a 07 v-star 1300, same animal as the Stryker that came later. Upgraded exhaust, intake, and fuel controller. It's a beast. Gorgeous bike, love it!
I gotta go with the Stryker as well, got a 15,love it will never get rid of it, ride safe bro
V-Rod for the win!
👨👩👧 ❤
I have a night rod and a Stryker. I put about 2500 miles more a year on the Stryker because i enjoy riding it more than the vrod
my first riding big bike is a VROD !.. and i fall in love with this bike ❤️
We work with what we have. Keep up the awesome content and congrats on your new lil dude. Harley all day every day for me.
Nos vemos 😎
The fact that you own TWO of my dream bikes, the others being Vulcans, this is a treat to watch. Japanese Cruisers RULE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I"M 5'6 goin from a 650 vstar to the stryker! Getting ready to testdrive!
I am a Harley Davidson fan ( but now I like Indian more than HD). The power of V rod is awesome. But by look wise, I like Stryker very much. And I think Stryker is more comfort to ride when compared to v rod.
Interesting comparison. Never owned a metric cruiser like that yamaha, so when you started tapping on the plastic parts I was surprised and entertained. It very much altered my perception. I just assumed it was all metal. I hate to call it cheap, cause still looks hella fun... And half the cost of an HD.
Most people change those covers and intake anyway. Talking $50 covers and no one ever keeps stock intake even on Harleys. There is some.Strykers that come.with the billet covers as well. Wouldnt.kee me from picking the more reliable and stylish Japanese bike. You could get.a warriorand stryker.for the price if the vrod. If you want a really fast cruiser get the Yamaha again with the vmax.
The night rod you have here is the older model with the 1130cc motor. The updated model with the more angular rear fender, and smaller headlight visor has the 1250. The difference isn’t super noticeable. I had a 2014 NRS. Thing was a blast!
Thanks for the info. I did some research but all the sites have different info. Lol.
While you're kinda right, the 1130 was from 01-07 and then changed to the 1250 up until 17, so Jon is right with his specs. Another fun fact is that Porsche designed the engine in Germany,, with the assistance of Eric Buell and fellow HD Engineers. Great bikes
Jon’s videos are classics
I love the looks of both bikes!
I hate that asian cruisers have this stigma here in America that they're not true cruisers unless they're Harleys.
Harleys are also made with asian parts, just FYI. China, Japan, Austria, Italy, and Mexico is where they get their parts from.
Either way, when it comes down to it, I would rather own a Yamaha than a Harley. No crazy vibration or overheating issues when city cruising.😎
This is why I love your chanel you compair anything and I love it
Thanks, brotha! I appreciate the support!
Beautiful video powered by some fact based comparisons. I just sold my voyager 1700 and these days looking for a chopper like vrod Stryker or a fury. Your video has addressed most of my queries concerning the mentioned bikes and I now see myself better positioned to decide which one to go for.
You have just won a loyal subscriber 😊
Thanks, man! Glad the vid is helpful! 💯🤙
Corbin makes a custom seating with two back-rests and panniers for the Fury, Honda's Striker; so that would be quite an amalgam of priorities, a chopper loaded up with bourgoise highway travel specs. I looked it up because I was thinking about what it really means for a person's back on these chopper style bikes for hours at a times. Me, no toasted leg please and sit me either upright or against something until I know better.
Got my vrod pretty cheap used with good miles coming from sports bikes to this helped ease the pain of slowing down a bit lol and it's a fun bike for spirited riding still
Exactly! The performance cruisers definitelyfl fill a niche!
Love that stryker looking forward to get one for the next summer
Had a Victory octane which is pretty much an Indian scout. Sold it to get the Stryker..best decision ever. I'm in love with everything about the Stryker and currently in the process of modding it out lol
Cool review! When i was in the market my choices were between M109R BOSS and VRod Muscle. I ended up picking up the Suzuki for various reasons, but it's good to see comparisons of bikes i haven't considered!
Thanks, brotha! Ride safe!
love my yamaha stryker going on 3 years now been to newfoundland and back great ride
I own a VRod. It is a great bike, so fun to ride, fast, and historically super reliable.
Many people worry about the plastic fenders, or engine covers. Why? Actually plastic is much better to cut weight. There are high tech plastics even stronger than steel. Some of the Harleys are unnecessarily heavy. I know you can't customize plastic much, but after you paint it, they exactly look like a metal. I wish my FAT BOB has some plastics to cut the 320 kg
Agreed! Best part about my Buell being all plastic, no rust and scratches buff right out or if the color is fading you can buff it down to renew it. I think HD used metal because plastic feels cheap and doesn't hold rigidity , now carbon fiber would be a game changer. Just my piss poor $.02
You make a great point. The top tier super sports have all plastic fairings. Lol.
Great comparison as I own a vrod and my buddy is looking at a Stryker. Just shared it with him.
My vote for the Stryker, better looking more reliable.
two of my favorite bikes. had a stryker, always wanted a vrod. stryker was a lot of fun. my first crusier and didnt want to spend all that money on a harley. now I have a roadking, but wouldnt mind getting another stryker down the road just for fun.
Thanks for the info brother, I’m buying my first bike and for some reason at 5.6 l always get back to the Yamaha Stryker
Enjoyed the video. I have owned both. I love the power of the VRod, but would choose the Stryker for the comfortable ride.
I had a 2006 Warrior and sold it to buy a V-Rod Muscle. I couldn't imagine going to a slower bike like Stryker after owning a Warrior.
Night rods from 2012 and up have the controsl a little closer to the rider. I'm 5'7 and test drive a 2011 NRS and the controls were to far of a reach. Ending up buying a 2012 NRS and it's very comfortable.! I'm from Phoenix and love the channel Jon
Thanks, brotha! I actually have a 2012 sitting in the garage at the moment. I hadn't noticed the difference but will have to check it out again. Lol. Ride safe!
I had a buddy that had a Stryker, they're pretty awesome, but even with a tune my Vrod left him in the dust..but it's not always about speed and they ride really well
Metrics motorcycles is more reliable, than imperial. This is my personal opinion. I love Japanese motorcycles.
The Japanese bikes tend to be more dependable and durable versus Harley Davidson. History has shown that.
Good comparison. Good video. Trying to find out all I can about the striker
Loved loved my night rod special, just an AWSOME bike. Once I started riding any kind of distance it just wasn’t too comfortable. But damn fun to be on.
I would like to see you test a Street rod one of the forgotten vrods.
I'll have to look into the street rod. Is that the one that came with inverted front forks back in the day?
@@JonsMotoGarage street rod isnt apart of the vrod line. It's a 750cc
Dude I love the V-Rod" it's got plenty of power especially on the interstate, I think the striker is a good looking bike" I've personally never ridden one" but maybe I will run across one for sale and take it for a ride.
I just have to ask you about a Vmax and get your personal opinion on it.
I have been riding or driveing anything and everything with wheels on it" since the age of five, that's when I got my first Motorcycle it was a little Honda CR60R and I had to use a milkcrate or steps to get on it. I was racing my Kawasaki KX 250 on local tracks when I was 13 and thought I was going to go pro" but my family's construction company went through a tuff time back then. I got my first Street bike in High School" even though I was already riding my Father's Goldwing when he was out of town when I was 12 lol . My first Street bike was a Brand new 1987 Yamaha FJ-1200 , I loved it until I got out run by an 86 V-Max " and the guy riding it was my best friend that Everyone called Big Bobby" he was 6 foot 7 380 lb, at the age of 17 , we had been playing on the same football teams since Pop Warner that's why I New how big he was. Dude this guy was the baddest mother f**** in the state of Georgia on a street bike" we would all go up on Sand Mountain to ride it had the best curves you have ever seen' and before Big boy got that New V-MAX I would leave their ass in the dust, those were some great memories" they'd be about 5 of us rideing.
I finally got my VMAX after I graduated from high school, my father wouldn't let me get one until my Mother and him ask what kind of car did I want as my graduation present and I said I want a Brand new Yamaha V-MAX and that's what I got. After we played around on straight a ways in which case I was smoking his big ass, we get up on the mountain and he still got me, this guy could do a power wheelie at over 100mph, I was good on my FJ hell I would torque it up in 2nd and go through the gears on it, but that Dam V-max just had so much more torque and at higher RPMs. Sorry about telling you my life story I just thought that we had a couple of things in common, I know you have already ridden a V-Max , but have you ever owned one?
Those sound like fun times! The vmax has been high on my list for a while now, but I've actually never ridden one. I've come close a few times to going out to see used ones but the deals never planned out. Sadly, they seem to be getting more and more expensive and harder go come by. But no doubt I'll get my.hands on one soon enough. My riding will never be nearly as crazy as the stuff you guys did back in the day. But I hope to get the vmax at least up on one wheel. Lol. Thanks for sharing, brotha!
I have vrod..balanced blueprints stroked ported polished heads..stainless valves..191 rear wheel.hp..131 torque. Bought it cause I had to..beast of a Harley..
I'd like to see the vrod vs the low rider s
Great comparo.I have own 3 V-ROD's in the past and the Stryker is a model that I am very interested but I am on the fence because both models are now discontinued. What about if you need an engine part?
Yeah, not sure on replacement parts for the stryker. That's the nice thing with Harley. They've been around forever!
MoCo's are required to carry and support all oem parts for at least 10 years after last manufacturing date. That being said, I don't have a Stryker but one of my favorites in the stable is my 05 Buell xb12r and though discontinued I can still find all OEM parts and aftermarket without any problems. Sure you're limited in the aftermarket world but there is always someone making parts, don't let that deter you.
I still get OEM parts from places like Partzilla. They were manufactured for years. Not too hard to find parts.
Getting the v rod and I have a warrior so I'm really hoping for a good highway cruiser.
No doubt you'll enjoy it! Although, may be a bit too similar to the warrior as far as the ergonomics.
Thanks for this. I'm a noob to the bike world. Got my 2018 indian scout sixty last year. I have all if 6200 miles of experience. Interested in checking out other bikes, more cruisers than anything. Triumph Bonneville bobber has my interest as does the M109. See ya soon.
Which one is more comfortable for riding 2 up? I assume the Stryker based on the seats. 🤔
Harley’s definitely mastered the art of making a motorcycle feel expensive, their build quality is very premium feeling. Yamahas are decent motorcycles though, if you’re on a budget and just want 2 wheels there’s nothing wrong with them.
I like them both, but as a short chick, I'd have to do a lot of modification in order to be able to ride either. I wouldn't mind seeing some videos highlighting some decent cruisers for us vertically challenged folk.
I’ve got the Stryker and I’ve test ride two vrods and still have a huge crush on them but they just didn’t feel insanely faster than my stryker. That was getting off the yamerhaw, on the Harley and back on the Stryker. And I personally dislike the tone of exhaust on the vrod. I also dislike the finish on the vrod motor. But who, how and why it was built fascinates me. And I absolutely live the style. I just haven’t been able to justify the $ it’s cost to get it but hopefully soon. My stryker is custom painted with the warshark paint and to look like plane panels, headlight swapped and 240 on the rear. The Intake, exhaust, tune and pulley swap on the Stryker makes a huge difference in speed. And it has the amazing tone and seating position. While the vrod has me crushing hard the Stryker is just too perfect to dislike
Well I ended up getting me a night rod. Right after I got the Ivan’s flash on the Stryker. I definitely feel like the Stryker is faster. The vrod had a better mid-top end but the low end goes to the Stryker for sure and the mud is very close. I love both and am blessed to even have to compare the two, but the Stryker is so much more of a muscle bike than it’s given credit for.
Great comparison video 👍🏻 love the V Rod... just subscribed
Thanks, brotha! I appreciate the support!
Dang!!!! Those sound like massive engines.
Oh and Dooood!!! I think the V-rod would have been better compared to the Honda Grom. ( and don’t tell me you don’t have one of those in Jons moto garage ) 🤘
Hahaha! I should totally do a honda grom vs vrod!
Vrods here in Australia are selling for 30K plus, it's insane.
I got a murdered out nightrod and wouldn't trade it for the world but that is a sexy bike! The Yamaha isn't bad either..
There is a learning curve on the Stryker, when you hit 60 you should be in 2nd and holding on cause about a sec after hitting 3rd you'll be at 85..........and when yoou can't stop doing this you decide to get rid of it cause you gonna lose that license
never rode a V-rod
I put a 240 on the Stryker, slowed it down just a wee bit, but opposite what everyone says, it handled curves way better than the 210.
Love those videos🔥 keep doing them!!!
Is the vrod faster than the fatbob 114?
Alex yes
Quite certain the vrod is faster than the fat bob. But fat bob is probably a lot more comfortable.
I was going to buy a striker but now since there’s so much plastic on it I think I’d rather have a Harley it sounds a lot better
Like your vids but I think it would be helpful if you added the "average" or "blue book" value of the bikes when doing a comparison video.
Excellent comparison. Love the V Rod..
you need to look at your camera that everytime you do close ups it's blurry. hell the whole time you did it is blurry.
Good review man 👍 I'd pick the Harley for sure , what is that straight bar going up on the right side of the engine . Being around the import bike , I never was thrilled with the plastic chrome or the fake looking parts that are just covers
evil_muscle muscled The strait bar is a coolant pipe.
That straight bar is a cover over the water cooling pipe.
Love my purchase bro appreciate it!
Heck yeah! Glad to hear you're digging it!
Torn between the 11+ vrod series or a yamaha raider. I come from sportbikes so id like something fast-ish but alos comfortable for toruing but good in corners. Not sure which?
How was your ankle on that V-rod? That pipe always heated my leg uncomfortably and I wear over ankle boots. I'd probably be nursing burns in those tennies.
I had two VRods and I took the Srtyker, the Victories, and the warrior to school. I promise the VRod will smoke the Warrior they would hunt me down to run and it didn't go well for them . At 5 grand tha VRod will pull like a train and the front tire gets real light....... That Revolution engine was a monster!....Ride hard or stay home😎
Stryker sounds beastly but I’m biased towards the Nightrod.
How is the raider vs the warrior for power? I had a warrior a while back and bought a stratoliner 113 now wishing for that same feel.
Raider, from my recollection, is about the same as the roadliner/strat. Warrior seems to have better handling and be a bit torquier, but that's just from memory.
Why did you choose the rod?
I thought you would use a raider for the comparison.
Hey, I'm looking for a beginner bike and went to all the shops nearby and could not find anything that fit me. I'm 6'3 / 6,4 (in between ish) and weight about 300 lbs. I'm 20 years old and looking for a first bike. There is a 2016 Yamaha Stryker with 2000km for sale near me. Would the bike be a good fit. Are parts easier to find. Is it reliable. Will I make the bike look like a grom? Thanks
v-rod is a pain in the ass to find decent bags
I like the VRod engine but that seating position really sucks for a performance oriented bike. That engine in a Livewire chassis might be fun though.
I think you've been ahead of the game for a while now. Lol. After you mentioned that the first time (with the talk about the challenger), I thiugh a bit about it. Realized Harley has had that engine in their arsenal this entire time - they just didnt quite nail it with the overall bike.
The engine was originally designed for the Buell but was too bulky for the sport frame hence why the V rod was born and believe it or not the forward leaning will help you in the corners having more control over the bike and it actually works but you have to deal with the straights. Eric knew what he was doing and had his hand in the design.
@@getoffmygrass6974
Actually the engine was originally designed for the early 90s VR1000 AMA Superbike racer. It did pretty good one year, both bikes cracking into the top 10 in the Daytona 200 until both engines blew up spectacularly with flames coming out of the tailpipes. HD got Porsche involved with further development to make a production capable engine out of it. I was excited at the prospect of a sport HD. And then they only made the VRod. I like the early ones but the clamshell feet forward position is just horrible. Not a sportbike at all, just a cool engine in an otherwise goofy but very well made machine. The large back tires on the later VRods made them even goofier, the early ones had proper sized sportbike tires. It IS an awfully heavy engine, something Buell wouldn't want. His final Rotax engined bikes were pretty nice but feel like they are made of 100% plastic and potmetal.
@@upsidedowndog1256 I didn't know about the AMA days and actually own an 05 xb12r, incredible bike but high maintenance. I also loved that porsche had their hands in the design. The things HD could've done if Eric was still there
@@getoffmygrass6974
I totally agree. I had hoped Eric was onto something with his last bike. I always wanted a true American sportbike, something for which no excuses need be made. HD messed up by killing Buell in my opinion but in those days of Obama's stagnant economy I can't say I totally blame them. Their decision to kill the VRod AND the Dyna? Utter lunacy for which there are no excuses for. Hang onto that Buell if you can. I think they will gain in popularity and value someday.
Did you ever try an old school honda magna?
I still haven gotten a chance to. But it's on my list.
@@JonsMotoGarage I haven't tried one yet.
Why do you prefer the harley if the riding position is so uncomfortable? Looks is not everything.
Has to do with the performance/fun factor. Stryker takes the win for comfort in my book.
It's not uncomfortable to everyone and if you ride the bike the design has a purpose, it will automatically put weight on the front and make it easier when cornering, you'll feel more control over the bike, rather than when leaning into a turn and the handlebars are in your gut. I thought it was total bs myself until i tried it, sure as poop, yup!
The v-rod motor is from Porsche so it's not a harley v-twin. I have a burnt orange muscle and it is a beast. That 240 back tire can take so hard launches!!
It's actually a reworked Harley race motor. Porsche was brought in for tips (I'd assume a lot of it for the liquid cooling,) but they didn't build or design that powerplant.
Hi I like that , I like to see v rod and m109r if you can thanks
Thanks, brotha! I dont have the m109r in the garage anymore (sold it a while back). But I have clips of both that I can probably throw together. Great idea!
Okay thanks
In Australia you can buy 3-4 yammys for the nightrod
You pay for what you get
@@maxheadroom8097 you get under engineered technology that's decades old, over priced, under performing... But because it has a particular badge on it people "have" to buy it 😂 don't forget your "American eagle" is somewhat put together in US out of parts completely assembled in China and Mexico. Just admit, you have been taken for a complete ride.. If you can't - let that cognitive dissonance kick you in the pants "... N.. No it's not..."
Stryker, good looking bike!
I’ll go with the night rod
As long as wind blows and the motor thumps we all winners aren’t we
Well said!
Rod. Love em.
stryker all the way..i like the engine better and the style better(also i cant stand the scoliosis seating position of the vrod....i already dont like forward controls but then if you make me stretch forward up there too to reach the bar im out)
2:15 ofcourse you can compare those bikes, both has the same Orange colour ! LOL
Notice reliability was mentioned metric bikes are know for reliable the Harley not so even the vrod which is designed bye Porsche doesn't have the reliability as the metrics
Can’t please everyone.
dude you should have compared this bike with another bike lmao!
Hahaha!
jjohn should find a zx12r
Why even bother having any speed comparison of any cruiser in the first place? So that guys with heavy pigs can have dreams of going faster than a sport bike?
Hahaha!
Just hope the right V-Rod doesn’t roll up next to you
@@jfisher99999 Well, I'll be laughing if one does because it takes H.D. to make a 1247cc bike to just barely beat my 700 in the 1/4. I seriously doubt the rider will get a good enough hole shot to take me, either.
Saxon everyone has different needs. I had an 07 R1 that would pound out that 700, but do you see how silly of a comparison that is? I can ride the V-Rod all day long, have the wife on the back if she wants to and it’s still a fun every day bike that has some good power. Nothing else compares in the Sport Cruiser segment
@@jfisher99999 I know there's no comparison, you're preaching to the choir but when you brought up "one rolling up next to me" you involved my bike so you brought on the so called, "silly comparison" yourself, not me.
Harley is really a Porsche engined machine
Harley all day
Stryker all the way!
5:25 And that, ladies and gents, is why Harleys have always been priced the way they are
That Stryker is just slow because I've 1 that's a 2011 and all blacked out and she will walk the dog on both of them. I'm not saying it to be that kind of guy because I'm not that guy but it TRULY will. I bought my Stryker from someone and she is SUPER FAST!!!!!!
Stryker all the way
Yamaha 💯 beaucoup plus jolie et surtout beaucoup plus fiable,j'adore mon 1854cc c'est une bête de performance 😉😏
Stryker all day
V-Rod
🤠👍
Yamaha rear light stolen from 2003 R1. 😂
Yamaha Stryker will win..
