Welcome to the coastal vineyard village of Sao Mateus, best known for the vineyards, adegas and one of the most important religious feasts in the Azores.
This quaint village located on the south coast of Pico Island, lies between two of the main towns/villages of Madalena and Lajes.
This video is about giving you a small glimpse and feel to what this special village has to offer, here you can experience both the countryside & the coast. The best of both worlds.
We feel that this peaceful friendly village is not only worth visiting, but also a great place for those who might want to live on an island(full or part time).

I really liked the phrase: We can leave a place but that place doesn't leave us. And as age advances, it becomes imperative to return and return to the place we started from. And where in a way we were happy. Many of us have been happy with very little. Today we may have enough but it is in simple things and with simple things that we are happy.

In the Azores, which are a group of isolated islands in the middle of the Atlantic, halfway between Europe and the American continent, where a unique people live in the world with a deep spirituality where the cult of the holy spirit prevails intact to this day, which says a lot about the spiritual devotion of the people of the Azores. The church of "Our Lord Good Jesus Miraculous" where I have been also makes us shudder inside for those who are believers and have faith like me. Good morning. I remind you that I have known the Azores very well for many years for professional and leisure reasons and all the islands except Graciosa and Corvo. I have always been impressed by the "soul of the Azorean people" that goes back to its Ancestors where, for example, even today, after all this time, it still resists and I believe that the Cult of the Divine Holy Spirit is unique in the entire world. This says a lot about the Fiber and Faith of a People. Also the Pilgrims who around this time of Easter travel to some of the Azores islands, for example in S. Miguel, under deluge rain for days on end to give testimony to their unshakable Faith!!. What admirable people!! In S. Mateus I never miss a visit to the Church because it is dedicated to the Holy Miraculous Christ, from which I even brought an image that is here in my house. When I'm there in Aldeia da Fonte I go to the Church of the Silveira as it's the closest to Aldeia da Fonte. I loved His reference to His ancestors who are all buried in the same cemetery next to the Church of S. Mateus. This reference really impressed me for personal reasons. I also know from personal experience and for reasons of faith that those who have already left and are in the afterlife but present in our hearts are protecting us from there.@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
@@user-pt2fo6le5y I understand and appreciate you sharing your warm thoughts. I too have an extremely strong connection to all that is here, either in the present or in the past. I was born here, returned year after year with my parents. On most of our videos, I give thanks that I am part of this lava vine fabric. I also acknowledge how lucky and thankful we are. I also give my gratitude to my father & mother, and their parents, and all connected through them. One of the main reasons we decided to have our Pico channel is to share the love, energy, respect, spirit and passion we feel for this very special place. The other side of the coin is that in honesty, we also have to share the imperfections, and that is why we had to do this video. We can't always look away, this is our own experience. Take good care!
Sao Mateus is my favorite village. I have some precious friends living there.

I have a friend that was from Toledos,Madalena and lives in Pico.He was my friend when we were serving the military in faial on the 80s.And the weekends when i was out of service,i used to take the ferry to Pico!!🇺🇸🇵🇹❤️

Friends ask me why do you love Pico so much because I was born in Terceira and lived there till I was 8 yrs old then I moved to Pico where my parents are from and lived there for 3 yrs I don't know why why I have this attraction to this Island, when ever I am there I never want to leave and it is all I think about is Pico. Hi Carlos. My Portuguese language is not as good as my English but I enjoy and appreciate you speaking in Portuguese at times in your videos. Born on Sao Miguel, Parents immigrated to Canada like many. Enjoy your videos and plan on visiting Pico, Faial and Sao Jorge hopefully sooner than later. I fell in love with revisiting my birthplace after more than fifty years absent. I feel more people should explore more of the other Azores islands other than their own home island. They are truly unique and share a very common bond of the people.
Many of us from the Azores have a lot in common, important to stay connected to our roots. We want to visit a few of the other islands, maybe next year. Take care!
