  • My WD My Cloud bricked and had a solid red light for a while. After some research and a lot or effort I was able to retrieve my data from the drive. This video shows you how you can also do it.
    To download the software I used, you can check: www.paragon-so...

    Dude you saved about 15 years of memories for me and my family. The piece I missed myself in this WD My Cloud madness is that this is a UNIX drive (Would have never occurred to me). The fact that you supplied an easy solution to that issue, on top of super clear instructions... forever grateful. Best of luck in everything you do. Signing up for your channel!

    You are my patron saint! I can't thank you enough for saving years of my children's photos and our family memories. This drive has been hiding in my basement for years because I couldn't save it, but I wouldn't part with it. The hours you spent making this video literally changed my life. Thank you.

    You sir are a complete life saver! I can’t thank you enough for putting this content out. I followed this step by step and was able to save 15 years worth of family memories :-). I will add that I am operating on a MacBook Pro so I downloaded the Paragon program that is compatible with a MacBook. I will also add since I am utilizing a laptop, I needed a SATA to USB adapter. If you go this route, ensure that you get the adapter that has a power cord. You will need that added power to actually power the hard drive. Thank you again man!

    Thank you … you saved me countless hours of research in trying to figure this out. I had the flashing red light due to a failed firmware update. For those who followed this tutorial and was unable to mount the drive, I found that it took a few attempts by either unplugging the usb or disconnecting and reconnecting the power. Worked a treat and saved 30 years of memories… thanks again

    Thank you so much for this easy, step-by-step approach to divorcing yourself from WD's Network Attached Storage system forever! That proprietary piece of crap has been problematic pretty much since year 2 I owned it. I will never use one of thier products again. I don't know how many countless hours of research you must've put into being able to map out and find this work around, but there's a special place for you! You are a saint! All my data files transfered sucessfully.
    Thanks again!

    The tips on opening the enclosure were good, I wish I'd known about the credit card trick when mine failed a couple of years back. As for the data recovery, Windows can now use WSL to mount Linux filesystems, so no third-party software needed. Alternatively, as I did back then, you can boot into a Linux Live image such as Ubuntu, it will be able to mount both the old HDD to recover from, and the USB HDD you're recovering to, just drag + drop.

    wow - you saved my day. After my wd live crashed i had no chance to get on my datas. It always showed me that i would have to setup the wd live new and all users had been away. I tried also easeus data recovery, but i got ony an output with 100k of pictures, unnamend and not in the original folders, so i didnt know, in which folder i had sorted them originally. You tip with the Paragon Software saved my day and i could access now all my files within the original folders and names on my wd cloud live. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!

    Great guide, thanks for sharing it with people who might not know. My only critique: Laying the hard drive onto the computer sitting sideways like that is unnecessarily risky in my opinion. If by accident it falls and/or some of the exposed contacts on the drive are shorted by the metal of the case, I would be worried about ruining the drive. I'd recommend at least inserting it into the case properly or maybe getting an external USB 3 enclosure or docking station. Your data is worth that much.

    Thank you SOOO much! Same story as many others. My mother-in-law sadly passed away and there was no more delaying the inevitable task that I had been postponing for a year: I had to get those pictures off the old NAS which had crashed after a power failure. What caused some delay was the fact that I stupidly downloaded the wrong version of the Paragon software so initially the software couldn't find my WD drive. When I figured out that I'd installed the Apple version instead of the Linux version I was very very pleased to recover all those old family pictures. And I'll hopefully score some browny points with my wife!

    Thank you so much for sharing this, I have tried for days and ends trying to install Linux on both my Mac (new Apple silicon) and Windows machines. Each pose huge difficulties because there are dual boot, boot from USB flash drives and various Linux versions. I have not been successful at any without the fear in wiping my hard drives and render it not bootable. I was just about to try VM method but that is the slowest even if it were to be successful, with the amount of files I got, just going to take ages. Like other commented, I have personal files that are stored in my WD for years. Anyway, Paragon software has worked immediately for me. Thank you so so much! 💕💕👍👍

A issue that occurred for me while trying to use software provided was that the app automaticity mount as read-only causing the app to crash file explorer or just not detect the Volumes. A simple fix I found was to just select read only in the app's settings prior to connecting your drive.

    WD MyCloud 4TB NAS older hardware only supports the Cloud OS3 and doesn't support the latest Cloud OS5 software for compatible devices. As the only choice given by Western Digital was to upgrade to a compatible WD Cloud OS5 device. I debated for months to make a decision on my next WD NAS upgrade and disconnected the remote access through the web browser a week ago. Time run out and WD Cloud OS3 only devices' security updates support ended on April 15th, 2022. I wasn't pleased with the choices and the WD Red Nas 4TB hard drive inside the old device is still in good condition. I decided to go with Synology as my new NAS. I bought a diskless NAS that will arrive next week and two 16TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro NAS SATA HDDs that arrived today. Also, I ordered today after watching your video an enclosure for my WD Red NAS 4TB HDD to access and organize my data in the meantime. I already have Paragon extFS for Mac so I am ok on that front to see the Linus device on my Finder window. I can't thank you enough the dilemma of dismantling the WD Cloud and taking out the drive without damaging was adverted and it was a very fast process of about 10 - 15 minutes tops. Clear and Concise. Bravo!!

    This MyCloud is the same as mine, and it’s going out of service with the change to OS 5. As such, after I save my data from it, I want to shuck it and convert it into a regular USB drive. This should help a lot. Thanks.

    • @johnm2012
      @johnm2012 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The old MyClouds are still usable. They just aren't supported any more and there are no further updates to the firmware. That means they will be vulnerable to attacks if the sharing over the Internet feature is enabled, so they've turned that off permanently with the final update that was sent out earlier this year. They are still fine for use on a local network until the drive itself fails. You can connect an external drive to the USB port and set it up as a safepoint using the MyCloud control panel. The external drive can be NTFS formatted, if you want, which makes it easier to read using a Windows PC. Setting it as a safepoint will make a backup of your files and keep it up to date every night. Then, when the internal drive eventually fails you can use the backup to recover your files. The original MyClouds aren't made any more. They've been replaced by the MyCloud Home, which isn't as useful. It isn't a proper NAS and doesn't support the SMB protocol. It only works when connected to the Internet. So the old MyClouds are worth hanging onto. It is possible to replace a completely failed hard drive with one of the same size or bigger - there are detailed instructions for installing the operating system that the small ARM-based computer board needs on the WD support site. You can then restore all your data from a safepoint drive and have the unit working again.

    Great video, thanks for taking the time to show all the details. It was really useful. For me in particular, the way to actually open the drive was the part that helped me the most.
    I should add that an alternate way of doing this is to simply attach the extracted drive from your WD My Cloud to an external hard drive enclosure which you may buy cheaply from Amazon, Ebay, Bestbuy and other places. Then plug it into your computer. That's less troublesome than attaching the WD Red Drive to your internal PC connectors. (Be sure to pick an enclosure with the same type of connector as the one used by WD My Cloud.)
    Also, as an alternative to the software you used "Linux File System for Windows" by Paragon, You may simply use any of the Linux distros available and then use the Live CD feature which is available on most to access the content of your drive.
    Greetings!

    Keep ALWAYS an updated BACKUP of your critical HDs in a DIFFERENT UNIT that is NOT ALWAYS plugged on your computer (an external device, for virus issues). If possible, 2 external units, and alternate their use. You’ll say: it is expensive and time consuming! Think of this: how much would you pay and how much time will you want to waste if a critical error happens to your ONLY copy? I have passed through this and I can tell you that it is no such thing as an expensive backup.

    Thank you. Your video was spot on and saved me time and money in retrieving data from a malfunctioning MyCloud NAS. I think a lot of PC tech is scammable because the companies don't support their products in any real fashion, except for replacing equipment that never really worked in the first place. There is no perfect solution, even to the cloud, but I am considering an all of the above approach to backing up data. Quick questions, does anyone know of any backup software that allows you to run multiple different backups automatically?

    What cables do you use if you don't have a tower/desktop computer?

    • @nikunjmuglani
      @nikunjmuglani  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, if you don't have a desktop and are working on a laptop, you might need a case for the 3.5 inch drive. That's going to come with a small power adapter and a USB cable to connect your drive to the laptop.
      FYI, over USB, the transfer speed is going to be super slow.

    great video, however I have a question @nikunj muglani, if I just wanted to reformat the drive and didnt care about restoring any of the data on the drive. What is the exact instructions do to so, I have a 4TB drive. I was able to take it apart and put into a case, after plugging it in, it is asking to reformat and comes up with multiple drives so wanted to make sure I do it correctly.

      Use disk management on Windows to format the drive and create a new partition.
      This might help: support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-and-format-a-hard-disk-partition-bbb8e185-1bda-ecd1-3465-c9728f7d7d2e#:~:text=before%20you%20begin.-,Open%20Computer%20Management%20by%20selecting%20the%20Start%20button.,format%2C%20and%20then%20select%20Format.

    Hi, Thank you very much for this sharing ! like you my WD My Cloud is briked with a solid red led ... The NAS drive is ok just the WD mother board after several reboot seem not able anymore to start the drive ( if we listen a little bit the HD noises it is trying to start in loop...) my question is after your backup, did you try to integrate your Red NAS drive in an other NAS system ? what is your recomandation ? it is a pity to have a so good NAS HD with a system down certainly due to a planned obsolecence

      I was thinking of building a storage server for myself and using the drive in it but wasn't able to find the hardware I needed for cheap. There was no point buying new hardware for an experiment that might fail so I ended up installing the drive in my PC permanently.

    I managed to read the WD hard disk on my Windows computer after installing Paragon software as per your advice. Works well. The only problem is that the file structure of the hard disk is a bit weird and eventually I can find the folders where my files are stored. I tried to move them back to my Windows computer but somehow quite a lot of files with long file names can’t be copied or moved. Is there any limitation in the Linux file system Vs Windows? Any tweak I can do? Kindly advise.

    Once you have copied the files over can Windows read them or do you still need Lenox to read them?

    • @nikunjmuglani
      @nikunjmuglani  ปีที่แล้ว

      Once the files are on your local drive, Windows will have no issues reading them, if they are still intact.

    Why doesn't WD tell you about this ? I am so angry that the lack of support for the WD Home Drives ... I appreciate the software tip . Western digital has stop the main app (WD Discovery) from working. THIS STINKS >>. I appreciate your information. I have read that this box is a Linux box ...and it can be accessed using SSH with root access ... ... I'm looking for a way to make /hack this into something easier for hosting the drive. I know with Linux you can often do the impossible .. I still think WD STINKS ...least their customer support
