Miss Carter had such a unique instrument, it's a shame that the mainstream didn't have the common sense to promote and appreciate her.

"Fats" must have been delighted when he welcomed Nell into his heavenly studio. Sad to know they are gone, but can you imagine what music must be shaking the rafters in heaven?

Interesting that Nell could transcend the overweight woman negativity, and made it a real asset in her performances. The music she performed was, no doubt, part of that greatness, but who can deny, as an individual, Nell hit the heights by virtue of her talent and abilities alone!

Nell Carter was simply fabulous in Ain't Misbehavin'. But, can Ain't Misbehanin' really be considered a musical? Although each song tells it's own story, the show in general, has absolutely no plot, unlike a true musical. So, I can't categorize it as a musical. It's a stage revue of Fats Waller tunes.

+Nacho Mamma How *you* consider it is irrelevant. Professional theater organizations in the US and UK categorized it as a musical,
Ain't Misbehavin won the 1978 Best Musical Tony Award and Outstanding Musical Drama Desk Award. Nell Carter won the Best Featured Actress in a Musical Tony Award and Outstanding Actress in a Musical Drama Desk Award for her performance in Ain't Misbehavin, and Richard Maltby won the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical for directing Ain't Misbehavin (it was nominated for and won many other awards)
In London, Ain't Misbehavin was nominated for the 1979 Musical of the Year Olivier Award (it lost to "Songbook").

Before the 70's, musical theater generally fell into two types: the story-driven musical, where the show told an overall story, and the musical revue, which lacked for story and showcased individual songs, usually of a certain kind (such as the songs of a single song writer, etc.) The musical as you've described it--where the book was pretty cohesive with the music and told a story--didn't really exist until Show Boat (1927). Before then, most musicals were revues, growing out of popularity of vaudeville shows and featured no plot at all or just enought o thinly connect the songs and big dance numbers (No, No, Nannette, Ziegfield Follies, Shuffle Along, Funny Face, etc.). Even after the evolution of the story musical (post-Show Boat), revues remained incredibly popular (and still exist today on Broadway; Shuffle Along was just revived in 2016, for example). So, the musical revue is in fact the oldest of the various types of musicals.

Actually not all the songs are by Fats Waller. Some were written especially for the show. Musical Revue/Musical Theatre ...it's a fully staged, orchestrated and costumed show with music that tells a story representative of an era. xoxo :)
