Plant lemongrass, rosemary, basil, lavender, fennel and geranium to repel mosquitoes and other insects. In the evening when it's dark, you can light a petromax lamp, it will drive mosquitoes 3-4 meters away from where it is. It's cheaper to repel mosquitoes this way.

Thank you for the tip! Yes I definitely need to plant more herbs like this, luckily we're in bed early anyway so evenings not an issue currently, it seems to be the afternoons are the worst for us 🙈

My how Hudson has grown! What you say is so true. We built a gazebo with fly nets so we can sit outside and not be dinner for the flies. I think the stripey flies are deer flies. Nasty bites! We live near a river too.
Next village to us have weddings on the weekends. You can always tell as the music travels. Lucky we are not too near to be bothered much.
And I lost the battle with the weeds too this year. But I find that if you buy wood chips and cover the ground a few inches deep it keeps the weeds down. When I have some veg emerge, I try to surround them with wood chips /sawdust. It keeps the weeds in check and hold the moisture as well. And I can get in the garden soon after a rain.
All the best you guys. Doing a good job.

Great advice on the wood chips, we will definitely look to do that when we start getting to the serious veg patches, for now my little try at tomatoes has been a fun project! We rarely sit outside at all, but one day when we get a dining area sorted shall get the fly nets! Lovely to hear from you x

Hey! Loving your guys channel! Helping me plan my escape from the UK.
There are mosquito and biting fly traps that work off a propane tanks with odour sticks to attract them in. Then it sucks them into a sealed box which you have to empty. Apparently they can clear around an acre of land / 4000 square meters.
My mum and sister light citronella candles here in UK which seems to work, but maybe they aren't as aggressive or numerous!

    • @ourderelictdream

Thanks for being honest about some of the downsides of summer in a hot moist climate. I think to people who have never lived out of the UK and whose only experience of heat has been on holiday, probably with a pool, cold drinks, and airconditioning close by, it's valid to point such things out.
I was speaking to my friend in Malta a few days ago, and he was saying he'd give anything for a few weeks in the UK at the moment because not only is it relentlessly hot and humid there, but they keep having power cuts.
It was actually him who alerted me to the fact that summer in Malta can be very noisy with people partying on rooftops all night. I'm surprised and sorry that this is sometimes an issue where you live. It would be a nice gesture if the partyers invited you as neighbours, even if you didn't want to go.
I was hoping to be planning a trip to BG soon but my house sale has fallen through, so it's back to square one!
Best wishes to you all, and thanks for the video.
A channel I like stars a young German woman called Maya doing something similar to you. I can't remember the name, but "Maya rural Bulgaria" will take you to it.

Hudson is so adorable! I am in Canada and our mosquitoes are mostly a nuisance at night. In the hot daytime, they stay in the shaded areas, which is where we also want to be. We have found citronella wristbands (which we also put on our ankles!) to be effective.

Oh my Gosh ,I remember you guys from the very beginning of your journey in Bulgaria! I am Bulgarian who recently came back from London.Nature here it’s on steroids because of how fertile the soil is plus the climate. I mean when you mix proper South European Sun which shines and shines ……and shines a bit more😂 with that soil-you get every little creature (plant or insects) longing to join and live.😂 Weeds are major here, that is why lots of farmers are just killing them with some not so eco-friendly or ,,green” sort of speak methods. Summers can be exhausting-full of sunshine, heat. I am mortified by the mosquitoes this year, and I mean it. I know they deserve to live but ….no I’m sorry, they need to go away. Not sure if you do watch the news on TV but this year particularly there was a lot of complaints from citizens. It was way too rainy in June ,which was an obstacle for most municipalities to spray around agains those bustards. That is why this year they destroyed our existence. I know that in Greece, which is even more south than BG, the mosquitoes 🦟 are literally out of control and drastically more terrifying because it's much hotter and more humid there. The rubbish dumped in those beautiful, organic forests is something that saddens me and makes me angry. I still don't understand why someone would do that. There are plenty of places for disposing of littering. There are everywhere and must come to an end. Now,about the Guest Houses and partying until early hours my advice would be just call the police immediately. It’s absolutely illegal. Good thing is that police will act fast and they will stop. However, you both look fine and happy and the child is growing so fast and surrounded by butterflies, trees, seasons and a rural lifestyle. Once the house is finalised you'll enjoy it all. You have a lovely and growing community of Brits here. I'm sure they can give you lots of little tips and advice. The number of UK people who are coming to pursue a more simple lifestyle is ongoing. Not only from Britain but also Germans, even Americans are starting to come. I'm sending you lots of love and enjoy the month of August as I'm finding it to be a touch calmer. Hope your tomatoes turn out well too🫶Greetings from Smolyan, Rhodope Mountains ❤

      @yovkoyovkov9005 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@ourderelictdream it is very beautiful indeed. We have several mountain ranges running through the country. They have different characters. Rhodope one is the greenest and it’s famous for its exceptional quality of the air. I think it was scientifically proven that it is the purest, crystal-clean air in Europe, exceeding the one in the Swiss Alps even. It's the home of the legendary and mythical Orpheos. Legends are telling that he use to play on his harp and hypnotise all the animals and people around with his talent. We own a small cottage house here so it's our cheeky escape from the summer heats down in the valleys.
I saw one of the commenters recommend you to garden some herbs 🌿 that will help with annoying bugs.100% will pay off and will work. There is a cure for everything 😃

10:50 "Dumping rubbish in a random spot"-such a habit should go away ASAP! 😮 As I know most villages have got their community Bins emptied weekly? If I were you I would just make a photo, write the location coordinates (via Google) and print it, then report it in the local Counsil(or Община/Obshtina). With their good will they would send some Cleaning trucks 🚛 and people with shovels to clear up the mess....but without any camera monitoring probably the same people will dump their rubbish there again. Anyway, thank you for your enjoyable video! I watched your first epizodes about 'giving birth" and its really pleasant to see your son as a cute toddler! Bless! 😊

so true about parties, but it's not the problem only of popular touristic places. In August most bulgarians/roma people who live abroad get back to Bulgaria for a month and because they have to obey the laws in other countries they try to catch up and simply do whatever they want here. I live in half ruined village with 60-65 permanent dwellers and in August I can't sleep a night because of music, cars and fireworks, which makes my dog very nervous and he barks all night in distress. The mayor has PVC windows and don't hear anything, so don't give a shit (but actually he is just scared of those people).

On Friday there will be a party dedicated to the opening of hunting season, last year those bustards were shooting guns right in the village after midnight, this year I don't know what happens, ready not to sleep again all night l.
