It is not easy for a parent to see their child cry or hurt. She was crushed for you. But she gave you the truth. Treasure her. You will be great wherever you decide. When I applied to college, I didn’t get into any Ivy reaches and went to my much lower ranked safety school. I was so devastated and thought it would really hold me back. Instead, I got great grades, did a lot of activities and research, made a lot of great friends, and now I’m a couple months away from graduating from a Top 20 medical school. A lot of my classmates are working at companies like Google and Microsoft and doing very well. Where you go to college does not necessarily define your life. I hope you had a fantastic 1st semester at your college and are making the best of your time and college to set you up for success later in life. Channel the frustration of your failures into working towards success and the results WILL come.
Your mom was incredible! “If you don’t have this frustration first, you won’t have the motivation to do even better.” Congratulations on your hard work and I hope you’re enjoying school!
completely agree - this entire process has so much subjectivity and randomness built into it that there are always surprises (both good and bad!) throughout. If things don't work out for your undergrad years, there's nothing wrong with that! you may very well find yourself in exactly the job / career / field you want to be after college (or even find yourself at your dream school for grad school!!)

With your attitude, work ethic and strong support system, I imagine whatever road you're on it will indeed lead to Rome. Starting college in isolation must have been rough. I applaud you and your peers for navigating a truly horrendous time. My daughter will be applying to college in a few years. I may quote your mom when the time comes, because I do believe these bumps in the roads and course corrections make for the most rewarding and fulfilling journeys.
