  • It's August 1995 and i'm riding on the loco hauled workings along the North Wales coast. The booked 37/4s were suffering low availability and 31s were helping as seen here with 31 405 on a Holyhead train. There's a couple of class 37 hauled ballast workings to & from Penmaenmawr, a class 56 Grid running light engine , 37/4s on Regional Railway coast workings and a Valanta powered Inter-City 125 on a Holyhead to Euston working. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

That was a heck of a ballast train for a single 37 to be working, no wonder it was fighting for grip pulling away from the signal stop.

Yes, you had to pull away very carefully with English Electric traction otherwise they over-load and stop with a bang! Class 47s had superb Load Regulators and you could wind them up full without any problems.....

Loved that. Lived near this line all my life and remember these services. Before I had a car I used to travel on them.
Ironically they have just restarted the ballast trains from Penmaenmawr with GBRf.

Excellent archive footage once again 👍
I spent many hours on the North Wales coast in the 1990s when the 37s were working passenger services

That brought back great memories. The North Wales coast was easy for me to get to and I spent many happy days with a day ranger travelling with 37's along the coast in the mid - late 90's.

Thanks Soi. Two more of my models feature in this video, 37414 and 37429, both in regional railways livery. Had them both for haulage, probably between Chester and Crewe. Wierdly it was cheaper to buy a ticket to Chester from Blackpool North, than it was to Crewe. I'm just to young to have got the 31's on the north Wales coast. The regional railways LCHS was all 37's by that point, appart from for failures.

Yes, on the May 95 timetable change the booked 31 workings were finished. But the booked 37s were failing and all sorts of traction helped out including ballast pool 37/4s, 31s both 0s and 4s and res 47s plus even a couple of 47/9s......

Superb! They certainly knew how to sweat the assets back then.So much for the misconception of good old BR being a monolithic & inefficient corporation.

BR did very well at making every £ count! By the late 80s it was a well run lean operation. After privitisation the railways had 4 times the amount of money thrown at it and very little ever paid its way again!
