    Great series guys, really useful for me as a UK modeller getting into US model railroading - it's given me a much better idea of what I'm looking at.

    Thanks for the nod to the DM(/E)30AC. Those were my favorite growing up on Long Island in the early 2000s; most of the trains that ran through my station were the M3/M7 EMUs.

    Dan you are not alone, up until about 2013 I actually thought AC4400s, C44-9Ws and ES44ACs were all pretty much the same locomotive with slight differences.
    I was abruptly shook out of that ignorance when I wrote a rude comment on a video about somebody's collection, not directed towards them, but General Electric in general for making similar looking engines.
    He(the author of the video) explained the differences, and from that starting point I expanded my knowledge.
    Still, they all seem to have nearly identical cabs/noses, and their general shape and size seem to be consistent, similar to the minor differences in ventilation between the earlier EMD models.
    I mean, the difference between an AC4400W and an ES44AC is pretty much the same as the difference between an F3 and an F7, or an SD35 and SD40.

    You guys are right about the head end power equipped sd70s. The only railroad operating such locomotives is the Alaska railroad. They are the only six axle passenger locomotives in operation in the United States. Prior to this, metra had a fleet of six axle emd f40c locomotives from the Milwaukee road. The design was so unpopular, that only fifteen were built between march and may of 1974. All were retired in the mid 2000s in favor for the mp36 and f40ph locomotives. Only two are left in existence, but neither have been seen or used since 2012 for some reason. With the f40c gone, only the head end power equipped sd70s are used as passenger locomotives.

    A note on the AC4400 and GEVO trucks: They came in two standards for the USA, The GE Steerable and the Hi-ad (High Adhesion). The steerable types can be found largely on KCS, TFM, and CSX equipment where hi-ad can be found on UP, NS and BNSF units although all railroads have some of each in their fleets

    Thanks guys being in the U.K. I'm finding these videos invaluable I have changed from modelling British railways which are easy to identify as the class of loco e.g. a class66 has 66 which prefixes the loco number.
    This has helped so much with the U.S. system as I knew nothing of your numbering system. I am in the process of planning an n scale layout which I will hopefully get started this year. Thanks again.

    Slight correction the Conrail standard cab sd70 and the sd70macs where built to NS and CSX specs because the orders where changed after the buyout. Because up until then, the sd70/sd70mac orders were originally for sd80macs.

    This series is awesome! I'm a huge fan of Alaska RR and all of us ARR modelers are chomping at the bit for any model manufacturer to create an SD70MAC with HEP. The ARR 4300 series units have never been produced by a model manufacturer and Athearn Genesis has done several runs now of the 4000 series which is just the regular MACs. I love your 101 classes and I'm basically binging on them during a break from nursing school. Thanks for all of your hard work!

    interesting note: the SD70mACs that were built for the Alaska railroad were built well after SD70mAC production had officially ended, & were also built to Tier 0 emissions standards long after Tier 1 emissions standards had gone into effect. & I'm not sure but possibly even after tier 2 standards had gone into effect.

    Awesome episode!
    The SC44 and F125 officially enter service starting in July/August 2017.
    The ET44 started production in 2015, and the SD70T- 4 started production in 2017. Just to make it even more confusing, UP classifies then currently as SD70AH, which they also have second gen. SD70s called SD70AH.

    Speaking of Canadian National's "cowl" locos like the GMD SD50F, SD60F, the GE C40-8M and the Bombardier HR-616 the hood wasn't completely full width, by the cab's rear the hood tapered inward and their was a small window on each side that gave some rearward visibility. This hood taper was called the "Draper Taper" named for it's designer William Draper.

    UP upgraded a number of their older GE C44-9Ws and AC4400s to ES44AC standards and renamed those units C44ACs. As a result, new ES44s and ET44s were redesignated C45AC. CTE is an abbreviation for Controlled Tractive Effort, a software upgrade unique to the UP. Both EMD and GE use H to indicate locomotives that have been ballasted for additional weight. And in both manufactures cases, the "C" in AC gets dropped from the nomenclature. Hence, SD70AH or C45AH. BTW, the -2 in SD70M-2 represents Tier 2 emission standard compliance.

      I can understand how a layman might think all those model names can be a bunch of gobbledygook, but there is method to the madness. Even EMDs penchant for using numbers that don't accurately represent horsepower served a purpose initially. They used higher numbers than their competitors in order to make their locomotives seem more powerful. No one was fooled, of course, but the GP30 established a paradigm that couldn't be reversed, so onward and upward the numbers went with increases in horsepower.

    Great coverage guys. The Amtrak P42's by the way are numbered 1-207. The P32's are 700-717 and used in New York on the Empire Corridor and into Vermont on their Ethan Allen trains. They are used for going into New York Penn from Albany and for a few weeks this summer they are returning to Grand Central due to track work in Penn Station.

    The San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad use to run 2 SD-90mac locomotives, and they would always spread the rails apart on the curves, and the San Luis & Rio Grande kept having derailments on La Veta Pass until they decided to only use the SD-90macs in the San Luis Valley.

    I know this is an introduction series and you did mention T3 locos for a moment, but I would really appreciate you guys showing the difference between the T2 and T3 SD70ACe and ES44. The only real difference between the T2 and T3 SD70ACe is the T3 versions had 6 steps up to the porch unlike the T2 versions had only 5. T3 ES44 had more grill opening on the radiator aecsuon on the back that also extent more forward then the T2 ES44. Also the T3 ES44 dropped the large grill opening on the front sides of the radiator section for 3 smaller, tall, vertical grills. I didn't look any of this up. I have just noticed it over my 10 years of modern railfanning, and I think many other people would aspirate to know this as virtually no info about these changes exists online.

    Another spotting feature of the P40 and the P42 is the flashing lights above the cab windows on the early P40s. It was an attempt to imitate the bell lights on the previous F40 units; However, sometime between 1993 and 1994, they decided against the lights on the newer models. I believe the bell lights were meant to distinguish which locomotive was ringing. However, since the P40 and the P42 had ditchlights, I assume they found it redundant, so to keep from having more things to be replaced they removed it.

      Thanks very much for watching. I heard about the kerfuffle on Reddit, as my wife was trying to help out with providing other audiences exposure to our videos in order to promote the hobby and make it more accessible to all in as many places as possible. It's too bad that there are moderators in groups who are more interested in controlling people than they are in achieving the goals of such groups. Big egos with little minds seem to be very prevalent these days.

  • @willausterman3104
    @willausterman3104 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Many of Norfolk Southern's dash 9's were the C40-9 not the C40-9W. The "W" is for the wide cab which NS did not order until forced to by the FRA. The standard cab C40-9's are rare to see nowadays and will all be rebuilt including with a new cab. No model of one has been produced, they must be kit-bashed. NS loved their standard cabs.

    I afraid that even after watching this, with the exception of the long narrow rear hoods of the EMD sd60 and sd70, all these look pretty much the same to me. I'll need to watch it again several times to train my eye, I guess? (Or, just stick to the 70's and 80's.. :P ) That's not any fault of your presentation, (just my bias) which I thought very thorough and well done. A wonderful series. I'd double-thumbs-up if I could.

    SDIY talk to the guys in Chino who run the switching for industries here and they say those engines are piece of junk they said they don't give enough power when needed and not enough when full power is given they say it's a great idea of an engine but they wish they could turn on the engine when they needed more power to get out of the way of the crossing or to be able to move a little quicker so when you're hauling one box car the engine goes really slow compared to hauling eight box cars to 22 box cars

    In the end of the video, you show the Siemens SC44, where the engine has a "Catrans" logo on it. I was surprised and thought this would under "Caltrain" and not "Caltrans". "Caltrans" is the CA DOT that maintains roads. I know Caltrans probably gives money to rail programs, but I did not know they were in the actual in the business of rail and thought this would be under Caltrain. Any thoughts?

    • @tsgmultimedia
      @tsgmultimedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Caltrain doesn't have any Chargers. They won't get any, either, as they are moving to electric motive power. The new Caltrain commutes will be Stadler EMUs. I saw them being built in Utah in 2019. The Caltrain line now has overhead catenary wires all the way from San Francisco to Tamien station in San Jose.
      The Caltrans-branded loco in the photo is from Amtrak California's Capitol Corridor service.

    Why the hell do railroads rename their things? Like I think CN ES44ACs are EF-644Ts

    As I recall a few Years ago for fuel economy the Era of bigger and bigger single power plan units was being phased out in favor of engines with multiple power units so if all the power was not needed units could be throttled back had this trend cought on

    If you can see the name of the railroad and the number of the locomotive, you should be able to find out what it is. I understand that that is not as nerdy as being able to identify on sight, but good enough I think.

    The gensets were horrible. I think the only road that still uses them is UP. They would have problems with the genirators casusing the other motors to not turn on when more power was required.

    23:41 The Dash 8 looks like it has 4 axles and the Dash 9 has 6. Thats what im seeing

    • @tsgmultimedia
      @tsgmultimedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a stupid comparison that we shouldn't have included because the dash 9 is a "C" (six axles) and the Dash 8 is a "B" (four axles). Dan did state that they're two different size locos but this probably should have been omitted to avoid confusion - especially since MR101 is intended to be for beginners.

    I can't get a good wander for this, if a diesel locomotive spins an alternator to produce electricity, then why does more hp help?

    • @jonathonmccunnm5415
      @jonathonmccunnm5415 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fastest is can spin that alternator the more power or the bigger the alternator the more hp it takes to get the power out of the alternator. Only reason I can come up with this is I was an alternator and starter rebuilder for almost 20 years .
