  • How to Break In A New or Rebuilt Engine. This video will explain how to break in a new car engine. It is important to break in a new engine so you get a good piston ring seal and good wear on engine parts when it is first breaking in. This method applies to most cars but there are always exceptions so read your owners manual.

    One tip to breaking in your engine is to change your radio stations. Don't leave any radio station on for more than 25 seconds. If you do this, you WILL cause damage to your head gasket.

      Honestly I bet it really won't make a big difference. So many engines are never broken in properly and have lived for over 150k. I think it's something that you should do, but in reality, if it was that big an issue, it would be put in big letters up front and people would be told more often to do it.

      +Michael Sullivan The interest of car manufacturers isn't to make a car last forever just until the end of warranty. IMO A badly run in car maybe works "well" just consumes more oil/fuel looses some power etc. Dealer can sell a nother car earlier if it ages faster... :s

    Good advice! My 2001 Chrysler Sebring Convertible has 102500 miles, and has been all over North America (yes, Canada and into Mexico too as well as 35 US States). I'm a fan of doing the first oil change at 1000 miles, no matter what the manual says...just because you know it's a new engine and there will be shavings, etc as things seat properly. Best to remove them before they can break something later.

    I just got my brand new Fiesta today, so far I've done 28km on it. These were good tips and some I didn't know before, like having to avoid keeping constant rpm for extended periods. On my old Fiesta I went on a road trip after having clocked around 700km and on that trip I used cruise control whenever I could, didn't know it wasn't good for a new engine.

    • @mmllmmll22
      @mmllmmll22 ปีที่แล้ว

      CruiseControl is better than some Car Rentals. I remember - got Hyundai Veloster with 1.6TGDi from rental, with literally no mileage. Had around 400kms to do. I did a proper "break in". Next day i had to give it back, they even called me & asked if they can send someone to pick up that car. First thing that man did was redlining it at takeoff. Less than 1k km on odo, cold engine.
      Thats why i think cruise control is still ok, because Youre covering a lot of engine loads @ specified rpm.

    Just don't rev up the engine to the red line for the first 1K miles and, and don't brake too hard and you should be ok.
    Everything else mentioned here is optional. Change your oil at around 2K miles, and put full synthetic in. Then, change it every 7K miles and your engine should last a really long time, unless it's a Chrysler/Fiat.

    • @maynardsaints5281

    • @AlainHubert
      @AlainHubert 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      A brand new engine will always have a break-in period, where microscopic (and not so small) metal particles can detach from parts, and possibly contaminate the oil. Having the first oil and filter change at around 2000 miles ensures that you remove any contaminants. Some say that modern engines are built to higher standards and tighter tolerances than they used to, and that's mostly true. So the effects of the breaking-in period might not be as dramatic as say 30 years ago. But why take a chance ? Better safe than sorry I always say. And definitely put synthetic as soon as possible, you'll be glad you did down the road.

    good information, think they usually recommend not exceeding 4000rpm for that first 1000 miles aswell, i roughly change gear between 2000-2500 rpm usually or if I'm accelerating up to dual carriageway/motorway speeds 3000-4000rpm. But we was extra careful during the break in process of our car and it hasn't let us down. 13 years on and it's still running like it did brand new.

    I read about this man who owned a VW Beetle - he owned it from new and he had travelled a1,000,000 miles in it (a real masochist IMO - those old bombs are hell to drive).
    His secret was this; a) when doing a cold start, don't move the car until it's idled for at least a minute. And when it's idling, maybe depress the accelerator a little so it's a bit above the usual idle RPM's. b) take it easy with the gas pedal for the first 15 minutes of driving. And that's pretty much it.
    I have to laugh sometimes. There was this bloke I worked with who owned a brand spanking new utility. He took great care of it in regards to the paint work and body work, yet at the end of the work day everyone is scrambling to their cars and wanting to be the first out of the carpark - he would cold start his new ute and immediately race off!

    The last car I had for over 200k miles on it, I didn't even bother that break-in procedure. I understand that to follow the manufacturer suggested not to change the engine oil unit the schedule maintenance according to the menu. I put 50k+ miles each year for business travel. I turned on the cruise control while the car was under 100 miles and cruising for hours. No problem. Just do not do hash to your new car and keep on time on the maintenance and that's it. Do not abuse but also do not paranoid to just a piece of metal.

    Letting your car warm up for a few seconds has little to do with it being new. Building up oil pressure and getting that oil through the whole engine while keeping RPM low till it happens is important for any ICE vehicle of any age. It's the morons who don't know this who tell you to not let your engine idle before driving in order to save an ounce of gas, ignoring that it's worse for the environment to trash the whole vehicle sooner due to cold engine wear.

    • @Branman345
      @Branman345 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Stinky Cheese In most cars you don't even need to idle them as long as you use to. Most cars now adays suggest you don't it causes more damage to the engine. Always a debate in my family my grandfather worked for the automotive industry and he suggests that you let it all warm-up, but you can do this too by keeping the RPMs low and actually driving the car it helps a bit more. I hear what you are saying, though.

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Show me a single vehicle manufacturer statement that letting a car idle causes more damage. The ONLY negative thing about letting it idle for a few (minutes at most, but I'm talking about tens of seconds) is that it will use a few teaspoons of fuel, BUT that's not necessarily even true because if you try to drive while the old is colder there is more drag and more throttle is needed for any particular RPM and resultant vehicle speed.
      No, there is nothing about newer vehicles that make them need to idle less. They still should get the oil circulating before stress is placed on moving parts. Perhaps you only mean engines with fewer miles on them will run better at idle, so a newer vehicle will on average have an engine with fewer miles, but also that in the past 20 years vehicles have moved to more using 0W20, 5W20, and 5W30 (including synthetic) oil instead of 10W30 or 10W40 dino oil which even with the same W(n), flows worse when cold.
      You don't need to let a car completely warm up, just to get the oil fully circulated and be using the correct viscosity for the temperature. You cannot drive a cold engine and keep the RPMs or the stresses on it nearly as low as just idling in park. Driving it does warm it up faster but puts more stress on it while it does so.
      A more reasonable amount of time to wait after starting the engine is 20 seconds. This is not much of a burden if the first thing you do is start it, THEN put your seatbelt on, then adjust radio or A/C or defogger, look around for pedestrians, and away you go.

    • @1CoLoRz2
      @1CoLoRz2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This USED to matter. When cars were carbureted, they had very poor fuel atomization when cold and that would cause gas to stick to the cylinder walls, thus cleaning the oil off them. But with modern fuel injection this is no longer an issue. You still want everything at operating temperatures before beating on you car, and you still wanna give it a few seconds for oil to be pumped through everything. But after maybe 10 seconds it's better to drive your car, so it get warmed up faster. Just don't drive it hard.

    • @emilmuhrman
      @emilmuhrman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stinky Cheese The car take more damage when it's running cold. Idling till it's warm takes longer then when driving thus cause more damage. But a few seconds is good, so oil pressure builds.

      You are making up nonsense. It's a fact that cold oil flows less and provides less lubrication the higher the RPM.

    This vehicle has a clutch. The ford 6 speed power shift uses 2 3-speed transmissions in series, and a dual clutch assembly. One does 1-3-5 and the other does 2-4-6.
    The transmission is operated by electronic shift forks, and a transmission control module. Efficiency is increased through a direct mechanical connection, as there is no torque converter used during acceleration unlike a standard automatic.
    Otherwise everything in this video is correct. It's a common mistake people make with the Fiesta and Focus. It's literally 2 manuals operated by a computer.

    Your dad's car has 300,000 miles on it because it's your dad's car and he drives it like a dad. By the way, I always say, no one ever damaged an engine because they changed the oil too soon. But if the manufacturer puts special additives in a new engine, maybe you do need to leave it alone if you can't get the same oil or get the additive package separately. I would guess the new engine additive package is irrelevant after about 4000 miles anyway. At the most.
    New vehicles are $20,000 and up, with the emphasis on the up. If you get your first your first oil change before the recommended interval, get it at the dealer to protect your warranty.

    Just a small suggestion: If we talk in general, not only about brand new engines, it is always good for the engine to let it work with no load for a while after you start it. Not only 15-30 seconds but even a couple of minutes. It's not only for the oil to reach all of the parts but also the temperature of the engine especially in very cold weather. Having that in mind - when you start driving, you should also avoid hard acceleration and pumping out the top performance of the engine before it reaches at least 60-70 degrees Celsius.
    Very good video. I have noticed that most of the people really don't know how to treat their engines so thumbs up. :)

      Definitely true in the winter I acually never drive my car until it reaches operating temp well at least the water gauge bc I just don't like the idea of driving a cold engine bc the oil it thicker it's just not good and in the summer even when it's 100 outside I let the car warm up about half way and still don't go past 2,500 rpm till a good 5-10 minutes after the water goes up to operating temp. And I'm 17 a guy I just know a lot about cars and it hurts me to push an engine when it's not completely warmed up but after it warms up a little redline doesn't hurt once in a while😋

      +Damian Jasiulewicz redlining can do all kinds of things... Car has 10,000 miles on it and runs like a champ with 18psi of boost. I guess you would call it a hard break in. Changed the oil at 1,000 miles to get the bigger particles out of the engine then from that point on drove like normal. So far all good. gets around 28MPG and runs smoooth as a glass.

    Don't let it idle!!! because the rings are not fully sealed, so the fuel isn't fully compressing and incomplete combustion but at higher rpm there's more heat and less blow-by. So you should drive it right after start up, oil will have reached everything by the time your hand moves from key to gear selector. For the same blow-by reason, don't run it at high loads, but higher rpm is okay. Shift later than normally, so it's not under as much load at a given rpm. After a few hundred miles it's okay/good to rev it up so the engine wears in at those rpm and not just low speeds. FYI the manual says don't drive fast, that means don't accelerate fast (thus putting too much load on the engine) your actual speed (mph) is irrelevant, especially considering many new cars run at less than 2,000 rpm at 65mph. Just don't use cruise control, vary the speed.

    I brought a 1.4 TDCI Ford Fiesta in England back in 2002 brand new only 60 miles on the clock. I drove mine like I rob the bank everyday I would race my friends 2 litre GTI Rover and my other friends 325 manual bmw witch was also turned up for more power. had no chance in hell of ever winning. we driving to Glasgow nightclub doing 90 to 100mph most of the way twice a week coving 450 miles each time. also driving around town centre doing what guys do! I had the car for three years covered 165000 miles. my car ran like a dream no power loss at all. only problem I had was the injectors corroding due to me using illegal diesel it's called red diesel in England what farmers use in their Farm vehicles. then it was stole in 2003. I believe your car will get used to the way that you drive because it clearly worked for me. and if it does not work for you fuck it is under warranty.

    I am so glad I was able to read all these comments about break ins. Just bought a 2015 Callenger Scat Pack. Was trading in my leased CTSV for it. But before I did, I wasn't cinvinced I would be satisfied with the Challenger after having a supercharged car. So the dealer let me take it home to test drive it. The Callenger had 200 miles on it and for about an hour I was tearing it up to see what it could do. I even red lined it off red lights on the highway.
    I ended up buying it and then reading the manufacturer's recommended 500 mile break in. I was very worried afterwards that I may have done a bad thing. But I feel much better after reading all the comments. The car was fully warmed up during my testing.
    One last thing. Bought a new dirt bike in the '90s. I really babied it for the first 20 hours of riding. Then I started riding it hard later, on the pipe all the time. Was practicing starts before a race, and the motor seized. I trully believe it was because I babied it and then when I rode it hard, it seized it. I'm no engineer or mechanic - that is just my impression from my experience.
    Thank you all for even the most conflicting post. :)

      Alice Porter I am glad you have some peace of mind. What does the owners manual say to do for a break in? And congrats on the new Challenger Scat Pack!

    • @aliceking8486
      @aliceking8486 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It said no hard acceleration for 500 miles, something like that. I just happened to find it on a piece of cardboard paper with all the manuals, not actually in the manual. That's why I got worried.

      ChrisFix When my parents bought their new Corolla a couple months ago the dealer told them most new Toyotas do not have a break in period. My dad and I have a hard time believing that though.

    I disagree with the cold start. Idling a cold engine is a bad idea. You must get some load on the engine to heat it up as quickly as possible. Of course racing away with a cold engine is also a bad idea, so it is a fine balance. My idea is, just drive away slowly after 2 sec is the best and take it easy on the first 5 miles after cold start. Also I would like to know why you have to vary speeds when breaking in engines?? I always drive moderate constant speeds and long, long trips when I break in engines. The reason is, that engines then operate at constant load, and that is minimal stress. My cars last for 200.000 miles with no problems to the engine whatsoever. Sold them because of other reasons.

    • @giovanni233
      @giovanni233 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ronald de Rooij the reason is what??? you stopped suddenly at the end the reason it what?

    • @KiwiPowerNZ
      @KiwiPowerNZ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ronald de Rooij Running the air condition on high warms the engine up quickly. Puts a 3 HP load on it and also the condenser and fan is blowing warm air across it from the moment the compressor kicks in.

    Nice one. Essential tips for anyone getting a new car. Also it surprised me to see the Fiesta as a sedan! In Europe we get it only as a 3-5 door hatchback supermini with either a 1.0L gasoline or 1.5L diesel engine, both turbos and both only with a 5-spd manual gearbox (at least where I live, automatics have to be ordered and cost more). Keep up the good work!

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +andrew7720 Thanks a lot! That is interesting! These 4 doors are pretty common here in the US and it is almost the opposite with auto vs manual. It is hard to find a manual one of these because everyone wants the auto.

    • @andrew7720
      @andrew7720 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed. I am aware of the the differences. What I am looking on the internet and cannot find in detail is a very detailed comparison between the automotive trends, laws, cultural differences etc. betweed US and Europe. The seem to different and I would like to see a direct comparison between them. Unfortunately, for it to hapen it need someone with extensive knowledge in local laws, cultural differences and preferably to have lived on both continents The other way I think this can happen is to have 2 people, 1 in each continent to put up what the know and then to collect the data. It would be, is I see it, an interesting topic.
