Had an amazing thing last night. My voice had been bothering me for weeks...vocal chords dry and would not work. My band had a show last night and i have 40 songs I sing from Journey to Michael Jackson. I almost canceled. But a mix of hot water, lemon juice and lots and lots of honey did the trick. Made it through the show and actually gained strength as the night went on. One of your videos helped me on this. Thank you!
Dr. Dan, the amount of information and lessons your uploading, plus your way of explaining and teaching give me hope, since I can't afford any singing lessons :) Thank you!
I actually thought I would never hit a decent high note. Once again Dr. Dan has proven me wrong. It's really pretty amazing what a person can do when someone takes the time to show them. Thanls for this vid, it really helped. :)
So prior to being 12 and under, I sang exclusively in the flute head tone range, then around like 13, I was basically informed that that was not proper singing, and I had to sing from my chest/belly. So, for the next 4-5 years in vocal classes and choir, I sang as a super alto, filling in spots for the baritones in our choir because we only had one actual male, and he was technically a tenor who tried to fill many shoes. All the while neglecting my higher range because I thought it was not 'true' singing and had 0 purpose. Now I'm realizing there's a whole vocal world out there (by which I mean in me) that I haven't explored. I don't ever expect to be a soprano, but I might be able to sing along to more songs that I've previously written off as out of my range (haha all of them..).
Thanks Dr. Dan. For about two years, I've noticed I couldn't sing in my falsetto, and it all started when I had a really bad sinus infection. I thought maybe I needed to go to an ENT (there's no pain when I sing) but I'm going to try this and be patient. I get so frustrated because I have a ton of Cobb webs...my falsetto is breathy, the sound goes in out, it cuts off, it sounds like there's a frog caught in there, but my mix and full voice sound just fine. I get frustrated and tend to tense up. Thank you for this. I'll send in a update after about a week.
Know what? You and I speak the same language! Everything you say....each day I watch a new vid....makes total sense, but is explained SO VERY WELL which has not always been the case with the other site I have used as mentioned before. Not giving any names because that is not fair as you will appreciate. If we lived in Oz, I would be rat-a-tatting on your door. Then you would let me out. Seriously though, if it were convenient I would love one to one tuition. We live in rural France and I have tried to find an English speaking (or English by birth for that matter) but to no avail, hence the lessons via the net. Many many thanks once more, until next time!

I have learned a lot with your videos. When I sing with my ukelele, I usually use a lower register, much like if I were talking, but I love my head voice and I'm very in tune when I use it, but some people seem to find it horrid because of not being "very manly", stupid old aeon people. However, since those critics I've been watching videos of countertenors, and instead of being ashamed of not conforming to old aeon standards, I'm proud of hitting those notes.

Hi Dr Dan you are so helpful with the "How to practice" the importance of time and patience. I feel I'm getting to know my voice. I'm 68 and still want to sing.
this is so surprising ... I have been using weak falsetto since my adult voice developed and never did I felt the true meaning of head voice... now, I usually acquire "klang" , which means resonating, ringing quality of sound, "placed" above the palate, making it slightly nasal, but this... whatever it's called, it feels like a wave, a cone vibrating inside the mouth, behind the teeth... you have released the Kraken, Dr Dan! 😄
So I've just recovered from a nasty case of laryngitis and I can sing in my alto range but I can't sing anything above a C5, it comes out squeaky/whistley. It's hard to flip into my head voice. Would these exercises help me get that upper range back? I'm willing to try anything. *Update* : It's been a while since I posted this comment and let me tell you, these exercises were a GODSEND. I would do them in the shower like he said and it was like butter on my vocal chords. Within the span of at least a year since I watched Dr Dan's video, my voice fully recovered. I would do those exercises everyday, some times in the morning or afternoon. And I started drinking throatcoat tea which is a must for any vocalist or casual singer. It tastes strange if you're not a fan of licorice but think of it as WD 40 for your throat. Dr Dan saved my throat and I got my upper range back (highest note being an E flat 6, F6 after warming up).
Strengthening head voice is one thing but how would you make sure the singers aren’t actually starting in their falsetto which can’t connect with the rest of their register? That’s the trouble I’m having with my high school boys. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt you're responding to comments on a video this old, but I'm a counter-tenor singer and I have no problem singing in my upper register and transitioning upward. My struggle comes when I try to come back down to the lower register. If a random commenter could help at least that'd help me out a large some.
What if upper register: (flute, semi-flute, soprano, alto soprano) are my strongest voice registry (Imaginary, Evanescence; All I Want, Kodaline; Foolish Games, Jewel; Chipmunk songs, etc.)? But I can also sing some lower octaves: such as the one in Dock of the Bay (Otis Redding) w ease, but transition at "Looks like nothing's going to change" is a little challenging, but can be done & Give Me One Reason (Tracy Chapman); but the lower keys/octaves in It's Your Love (Tim McGraw, challenging but can harmonize with male singer, with little strength in pitch) & Try (Pink; very, very difficult; flat (in the sense of no range/movement in pitch) alto; difficult pitch to stay in esp. when someone is doing a falsetto harmony in the backtrack at the same time; voice wants to jump to flute) & You and Me (Lifehouse; flat sounding baritone??? vibratto) switching to higher key midsong at "Everything she does is beautiful"...I did manage to keep on pitch in key there, difficult) are difficult, a little weak & there is little movement in that register to go higher or down lower & hold notes. I find coming from the lower octave that it wants to jump pitch, but still on key (at times), to shift completely to my higher register without strength in voice instead of smooth movement to a higher midrange or finding a midrange key that's a/n semi-octave/octave higher to hit the just higher octave than male singer instead of having to go lower than male singer (You & Me; odd vibratto in pitch, but on key, can't hold notes long). Have difficulty harmonizing with baritones: (I Can See Clearly Now, Johnny Nash) I can get into the lower register to harmonize with semi-baritone/alto, not his lowest key, but coming back up to "Look all around, there's nothing but blue skies, look straight ahead, there's nothing but blue skies" it switches to highest register without strength & body. (In essence, where's my midrange vocals?) How do I fix this? I have some vocal range in the lowers, but I need to find my sweet spot & practice from there, but have no instruments or much money. I want to learn harmony w lower octaves (never had enough choir training in harmony [one semester]), but be able to stay comfortably in that pitch/register with smooth transition up & down to where I'm not going to wrong pitch not necessarily always off key....Just so you know Try, You and Me, I Can See Clearly Now & It's Your Love were all invitation duets with my intent to harmonize with the inviter on the Karaoke App. Am I asking to much of my voice? Could I share those songs to you through a private msg of some sort and get a list of the online lessons you want for me to do to improve my tonal quality & range? I need a lesson plan, please. I know I'm not completely hopeless in singing ability. I'm most certainly not tone deaf. But my voice might be more of a small voice not necessarily robust. It depends on the song (Imaginary of Evanescence is robust. It seems most altos & definitely baritones suffer, though. I think base is beyond my range. My hope is too improve vocal strength & power. My handle is different to my real name in that Karaoke App...I like privacy...

When I work on improving my head voice I often run into problems with diplophonia. Have you ever heard of this happening? Why is this happening? Is it a result of my upper register not being strong enough? Is it my lower register trying to take over?
I really really need help.. I'm worried to my range.. I'm in a Baritone range.. G2 - G6 upto A4 But i sound too nasal.. My breathing is also terrible.. I barely support those notes. I always strains.. Now when i'm singing my throat easily to dry and pains. It really ruined my voice
I only watch 3 vocal coaches on it and they are dr. Dan, Chris liepe who is amazing and Ken tamplin but he's at the bottom of my list only bc his style is not really my taste but good in his own right
Hi, Dr. Dan. I just have something to share, and I need help about this. I don't know what to do, I can sing in tune, it's just that whenever I transition from one note to another (or one octave to another) it wouldn't sound right. When I do the Do Re Mi scale, things could go wrong when I lower my voice (or the tune.) I'm sorry, i'm not quite good with music terms, i'm just a beginner. Hope you can help out! :)
how were you able to control the volume like that? between G4 and B4#, i have to increase airflow to reach those notes, which increases volume. and trans into falsetto from C5 and on. (male btw)
Ankit Udawant Well, I’m a baritone myself, and on some days I can work my chest down to D2, but normally, it only goes from F2-G4 On extreme days and with proper technique, I can hit A4 Here’s where things get interesting I can switch to head voice, and I can sing as low as A3 and up to D6 My whistle register isn’t reliable, because on some days, I can whistle up to the 7th octaves and on other days, I can’t hit above C6, so I normally don’t use whistle to prevent damage
getting really confused about head voice...I can't differentiate falsetto and head voice..I try doing to ah sound and I feel no resonance... I tried doing the eee sound then I suddenly felt vibrations mostly in my nose and everywhere above... I tried doing lip bubbles but there is still that break and I can't remove it..please help and give advice
Hi Dr. Dan, I tried doing the exercise but whenever I transition from one note to another, usually when I go down, my voice starts to 'collapse,' it was kind of like cracking. I would like to know, how can I fix it? Thanks in advance, good sir.
But my voice strain when I am transitioning from head voice to chest voice. I don't even know if I'm on head voice or falsetto but when I feel I can't lower any more, It cracks and goes to a very very low chest voice. Do I not know how to transtion my head voice to chest voice or I'm really not doing head voice but rather making a falsetto? Pls reply Dr. Dan I'm male so yeah
I really like your channel and think it is very helpful! I just have a question: I want to be able to sing in my upper register without being tense and having constant fear of cracking. What do I do? I don't want to live with this burden my entire life.
Hello Mr. Dan I already missed your videos and I am trying to watch them back, I have a question about the head voice, head voice is used for the high notes, how about the mixed one? Also, I've seen a friend who sings we'll always love you with his head voice in the part ( and I always love you....) when I tried I didn't like the sound of my voice in, and then I tried with mixed and it was fine, so I use always head voice to sing the high notes like in this song? 😮
Dr.Dan I love your videos and you've earned my business. I do have a question though. After months of practicing technique I've developed the ability to siren from bottom to top and back again smoothly. I can do it on ah, oh, ooh, ee and eh. When trying to sing in my upper register though it doesn't sound good at all. Kinda squeaky falsetto ish. Stronger than falsetto but stlll a bit like Mickey Mouse. My mix area is smooth and sounds like a baby crying. I've discovered that my chest voice has a nice bright almost sweet timbre as I mix the resonance. My question is about head voice. I've figured out that my head voice is really weak. The further I mix into it the weaker the sound gets unless I make the cry sound more pronounced.. Out the other side into pure head it's ear piercing at the top end but as soon as I try to say something it sounds like a cartoon character. I 'can' make a stronger sound but I have to strain. I end up squeezing my larynx and gradually choke myself until I can't sing and then have to take time to relax it all to try again. I think it's that I am not getting cord closure unless I squeeze my larynx. No matter how much I try I can't seem to fix it. The last week I've been doing an exercise using my breath, starting at a low note and saying uh. Closing the cords and pushing upwards into compression and letting it go into the uh sound. As I go higher I cannot create the solid uh sound. It sounds a bit like a ducks quack as I open the cords rather than that crisp uh with a bite. What do I do to work this problem?
This may be due to your voice classification. For example, Tenors can find it difficult to develop a stronger consistent falsetto. I encourage you to continue developing each of your registers in isolation...and then bring them together with work on your transitions.
I can go down to an E2 and to an D2 with Vocal fry, but I can belt to an D5 pretty easily, and I can sing in full Chest voice to an D4 to D#4, my highest Falsetto note is a G5, what voice type am I, a baritenor?
I remember when I started studying music, my singing "teacher" just focused on my chest voice and my lower register, kind of trying to make a mezzo out of me, while the chorus teacher saw a potential soprano in me... The result? A very insecure me with lots of insecurities at singing which is the main reason I study music 😒 oh, but with a hella good lower register in my voice 😒😒😒
doc,why if i sing in head voice my voice sounds raspy and can't get the high notes.but if i sing with my chest voice,i can hit high notes d5.but when i sing in head voice,i can't reach that notes.why? please help doc.and btw i love your singing teach

Hi, Royalena Fortney. You may find my online singing course helpful - drdan.co/onlinesinginglessons. Feel free to check it out sometime. The first module is free to preview!
Awesome!!👍👍👍
When I work on improving my head voice I often run into problems with diplophonia. Have you ever heard of this happening? Why is this happening? Is it a result of my upper register not being strong enough? Is it my lower register trying to take over?

Diplophonia? Might need to visit a throat doctor to make sure it's not vocal fold paralysis...
I really really need help..

I'm in a Baritone range..
G2 - G6 upto A4
But i sound too nasal..

Hi, Dr. :)
I've been struggling with this for a very long time, but not anymore. I didn't even know my voice was breaking 😂 thanks, Dr. Dan!! Cheers!
how were you able to control the volume like that? between G4 and B4#, i have to increase airflow to reach those notes, which increases volume. and trans into falsetto from C5 and on. (male btw)
LuckRenewal, it all comes down to practice. Keep working at it...within the natural boundaries of your own anatomy.
my lowest note is D#2 and A4 with chest voice. With my falsetto I can go upto G5.What is my Vocal type?
Most likely, Baritone.
Dr Dan's Voice Essentials how much I am lower to have range of a tenor?
Ankit Udawant
Well, I’m a baritone myself, and on some days I can work my chest down to D2, but normally, it only goes from F2-G4
On extreme days and with proper technique, I can hit A4
Here’s where things get interesting
I can switch to head voice, and I can sing as low as A3 and up to D6
My whistle register isn’t reliable, because on some days, I can whistle up to the 7th octaves and on other days, I can’t hit above C6, so I normally don’t use whistle to prevent damage
I don't even know how to access head voice all I know is falsetto so maybe this will help me??
getting really confused about head voice...I can't differentiate falsetto and head voice..I try doing to ah sound and I feel no resonance... I tried doing the eee sound then I suddenly felt vibrations mostly in my nose and everywhere above... I tried doing lip bubbles but there is still that break and I can't remove it..please help and give advice
Dr Dan's Voice Essentials nooooo...I cant afford a lesson..but in my school...they teach vocals and has a music course..would that work?
I think falsetto is more airy, while headvoice is much stronger and louder
Is head voice by your definition a mode 1 or mode 2 sound?
Thank you
You're welcome Dipen Basumatary. Thanks for watching.
Your video really good and easy for me to understand, Thank you. Dr.Dan
Btw My name is Dan too.. 😄
I'm glad you enjoyed the video BENALOGY. Thanks for watching.
Great stuff
Could someone help me with learning how to sing, like where do I begin? I’m so confused
Hi Dr. Dan, I tried doing the exercise but whenever I transition from one note to another, usually when I go down, my voice starts to 'collapse,' it was kind of like cracking. I would like to know, how can I fix it? Thanks in advance, good sir.
OK. Do you best to 'reduce' the air pressure as you approach the transition point. Remember, it can take time (month...not days).
I will keep that in mind, thanks! :)
Dan
I'm male so yeah

6 minutes in, my voice.. only air comes out, and SOME tone if I push... can you recommend an exercise to at least GET to your 6:00 mark? Thank you!

What do you mean by a "weightier" sound? Do you mean the point where I feel like my voice is going to break or crack?
Some clips of him singing sounds like Drew Monson!
I hear roughness. like breaking when i hit head voice how do i treat it?🙁
and also i can't do transition from head to belt or belt to head voice.🙁
Useless Dude, the following video may prove helpful - th-cam.com/video/3lcilJ-UKXg/w-d-xo.html
why does voice crack by shifting from chest to head voice???
In short, you switch registers and the vocal chords need to readjust
Josh fernandes you can work on removing the crack by doing vocal slides between your registers.(start soft , it’ll allow you to avoid the crack)
I can go down to an E2 and to an D2 with Vocal fry, but I can belt to an D5 pretty easily, and I can sing in full Chest voice to an D4 to D#4, my highest Falsetto note is a G5, what voice type am I, a baritenor?
DJ FuSixx more than likely
You are a super high tenor. I'm a low bass. We should start a band together
can you help my voice just cracks when I try to sing in head voice even at low volume.
I'll comment for sure if I would get to know its helpful 😊 hope it is.
doc,why if i sing in head voice my voice sounds raspy and can't get the high notes.but if i sing with my chest voice,i can hit high notes d5.but when i sing in head voice,i can't reach that notes.why? please help doc.and btw i love your singing teach
