We were lucky to get in on this stuff when we did. Years back I remember thinking how lucky the old farts were talking about $100 K98K rifles and $75 M1 Garands. Didn't even realize at the time at $59 for an M44, $600 for an SVT40 on surplusrifleforum or $250 for a K31, just how lucky we were. These new kids.. grinning as they hand over $800 for a k31 now. $400 for that same M44. Sucks to lose stuff you like, sucks even more trying to get it back with todays prices. PS, that Krag you had was amazing, can't believe you sold it. That's still the only Krag Jorg I've ever shot.
@@MikeB128 Just bought a Dutch Beaumont for $375 less than a week ago. The same shop had 2 Krags that I'm going back to get. I love both your channels. Thanks again, Gents.
I sold an M44 last year for $400. I just threw up a price so I could come back to my expected sale price of $250. Kid came and handed me the sticker price and left happy without trying to haggle. I thought he was nuts! I hated shooting that thing.
I could tell this was a hard video for you to make. I regret selling a 1917 mk III* about a year ago. I needed the cash and had two mk.III* rifles, I wasn't going to sell the other because it was my grandfathers rifle. The one I did sell was in nicer shape for an smle and had the Austrian police stamp on it which I haven't seen on many rifles.
I was lucky to find a sporter krag 1898 for 200 bucks cause the seller was a elderly man who didnt know what it was. Yea its sporterized but its still a krag
I inherited a Springfield 1898 that appears to have been professionally sporterized. Bishop stock, replaced sights and about a 23” barrel. Though about selling it after 2 years of trying to find ammo but decided to take up reloading instead. I’ve put about 80 rounds through it now. It totally spoiled me on how smooth the bolt is.
I have an Hakim and you're 100% correct, so fun to shoot. Can't believe it's 8mm with so little recoil. Sorry to hear of yours, but I respect you for being a man of your word. If you're looking for a rare bird, I know of a Rasheed.
Ah, thanks, but currently I'm halting all non-necessary purchases to get debt paid off. Maybe in a couple years I'll start again. A hakim will be mine in time, and yes, they are fun to shoot with zero recoil but GODDAMN are they loud.
Oof.. a friend of mine sold 2 Pythons, sequential numbers, display cases, dirt cheap... less than a year later, Call of Duty featured one, prices went up and he cried himself to sleep....
A wealthy collector I spoke to once at a gun show lamented, that when he was young, in school obtaining his professional degree, with little money but some occasional free time, he scrounged to obtain marginally conditioned, historic firearms, often hunting through piles of loose cartridges to get a few to shoot, dreaming of the day when he could financially enjoy his interests. Years later, owning several businesses, employing many people, he can purchase the historic guns he dreamed of when he was young and poor, with the irony he's so busy he has little if any free time to enjoy them.
Im glad that I am coming back to listen to your experiences and advice. I watched you a few years back but I couldn't buy guns at that point so all of the advice fell on deaf ears because I was ingnorant. I have sense started a small collection of firearms and only regret 1 purchase. That being a CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1 Carbine. My thought behind that purchase was "I want a 9mm carbine that isn't an AR platform" and the CZ stuck out to me and I i bought it instantly. I wish i would have used that $1000 to buy one of the 2 SMLE mk4 rifles they had for sale instead.
National ordinance has screwed over many a guy, some of their receivers are forged however, I’ve seen an all usgi m14 built on a national ordinance forged receiver and man that thing was a great shooter. I’ve heard of people purposely buying them smashing the receiver and parting them out at profit however.
depending on what they're using, NO guns are fine. Some are just refurbed and refinished milsurps, like a lot of Spanish M43's just get re-blued and stocks refinished, they're fine guns.
I can sympathize. In my case, it was a divorce which robbed me of my Garand, 1903, (2) M1 Carbines, M1A, Russian SKSs, Swedish M96, and a myriad of other items. Sadly, at that time (2001), they weren't in super high demand. Today it'll cost me twice what I got for them all to replace them. Regarding your #5 pick, did the Chileans have a contract for those as well? I thought it was just Colombia. I have one, and they are AWESOME!!! They're like a blend of Mauser and Mosin. The windage adjustable rear aperture sight, muzzle brake, and recoil pad make them really cool oddballs.
Also got burned on a Nat'ord. 1903a3 though it was on gunbroker and was mislead based on the pictures. That also taught me my lesson on doing your research.
Yeah man, it happens. It bothers me but more towards myself than anything because of what you said: Research. It takes time and when you're young, you feel like there's no time like now.
My Grandpa has a 1891 Argentine mauser. He traded a colored t.v. for it back in the 80's. The only problem with it is that it is sporterized. Other than that it is all original.
If you dont mind me asking, how did you get into financial trouble? As a young milsurp collector, i would like to know what to avoid in life so i dont ever have to part with my beautiful firearms.
There was a gun store near where I grew up that had some cool stuff. I bought my k98 there when I was 19 and some other stuff. They had a krag there to. I didn't know what it was at the time but i remembered playing with it and liking its odd magazine. That store also had a flint lock musket to. I didn't buy them but i remembered they guys there would let me play with their toys. I probably bugged the crap out of them to be honest with you. But hey I did give them a few hundred dollars because of my purchases. Also I was broke as shit back then...well still am but not as much.
Mike I had plenty of mint, and I mean mint surplus stuff, some unissued. All gone now for the same reasons as you. I really respect your honesty most people wouldn't open up in front of the world like you do. Back in the late 80's early 90's I'd get K98 and SKS's for $60 to $80. Yep and I sold them off because like you I needed the money and had "priorities". Wel they're gone and I'll probably never replace them, no way in hell I'm paying today's stupid prices, it's just stupid dumb even though I can afford it I just can't bring myself to fork over that kind of coin. It's over and I accept it. Not to say I won't purchase any surplus ever again, sure if the price is reasonable. Until that time I'm sticking to modern stuff and stuff that isn't mainstream yet, just as good but at sane price points. Thanks and keep doing what you do 👍.
Hey Mike great vid. I just found out your channel and ive been binge watching for a weeks now. I only got seriously into milsurp for about a years but technically ive been collecting (without realizing it) for way longer. What actually brought me into milsurp is actually my greatest mistake. I had a friend who sold me 2 german gun that is dad gave him. He never actually tried them cause they were looking old and he was scare of one of them blowing in is face. So, got both rifle for 250$ total. I honestly believe those rifle were probably worth 400$ at that time. Turn out, one of them was a kar98AZ 1917 all matching and original and the other one a g98 1913 not matching. So at one point im thinking about selling the g98 beacause I dont see the point of keeping them both. So I made a post on reddit and ask for help with valuation, Numbers were all over the place, some wouldnt give me 200$ for it and other 1400$ if I were in the state. Ended up trading it for a bulgarian refurbish svt40 with parade bayonnet and 200$ on my side (im canadian so svt are still going around 900$ CAD). Note that the g98 had alot of issues, it was sanded , electropen on the barrel, had a kar98 bolt, not matching, and missing one spring for the lange vizier. But for a G98 its was in pretty good shape overall. I dont even know if I could get another one like this ever. I later found out a big collector of mauser who could have provide me the right bolt and screw for cheap. Ive been routinely checking gun sites and not once ive seen one pop up except on auction site and they go for insane amount of money. Today I deeply regret this deal but Its part of the learning and its what really got me into milsurp. At least I kept the better one. Heres the g98 imgur.com/a/4h4VEol

Again, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. At any rate, a great list of firearms, some of which I wish I had.
