  • My brother has owned this bike for about 5 years and has done everything with it. After one last crash a few months ago, the cranks finally bent and we decided to give it a complete overhaul of parts for the next season. I can already hear the comments that are going to be posted under this video.

I ride pretty much everything on my £800 27+ hardtail. Its amazing when you see people back off from stuff because they have "the wrong wheel size" or "the wrong sus setup"...sod that, just ride it. Watched a GRBM vid recently where they said "you have to be careful on a hardtail here.." and I'm like, what? just roll it normally, I'd not even slow down for that....people used to ride this stuff on fully rigid bikes for fucks sake.

Would you believe that for the last six months I have been riding a stumpjumper fsr xc from 1998 that I got for free and is incredibly fun to ride? All this while a simplon gravity carbon 2011 which cost almost 4k euro back then is gathering dust waiting for parts? I have fun riding all my bikes everywhere. In fact I tend to dislike modern lightweight xc bikes. They are too light and I barely touch the ground when going downhill fast, lol.
Bikes are too specialised now, we have gravel, xc, downhill, enduro, freeride, dirt, trail, etc. When I was in highschool I had one bike and used it for everything from 100km trips on dirt roads to trail or just going downhiil through a forest with no roads. Those were fun times.

I have a £600 bike. It's the single most expensive thing that I have ever owned that is just for me. I love it to pieces, I spent a long time researching the best I could get for my money (I know I could have gotten a better bike for that money if I'd bought a used one but I just wanted a shiny new one!). I had dreams of all the places and trails I was going to ride it but, honestly, when I got to these trails and saw some of the riders and their bikes, I was embarrassed. I definitely felt like me and my Cannondale Tango didn't belong there. This video has given me a real boost! I have a good bike, I take good care of her and she serves me very well. She deserves to be used and when we do get on trails she responds well with all of her 'entry level' components and having a complete noob for a rider. You've given me a new found respect for the 'little' bike that takes me to work every day and gives me immense pleasure at the weekends. Thank you!
(As a reward for her hard work she has been completely stripped down this weekend and cleaned, greased, bled and loved to within an inch of her life! I think she's grateful- my bottom bracket definitely sounds grateful, anway!!)

I faced the same than you. I started with a very cheap $550 full sus from a local brand, and I always felt bad when I saw other people's bikes. Then, as I started improving as a rider and started to love the sport, I started saving and replacing parts, one at a time. After two years I have a bike I love with every piece of my heart, which has given me lots of good memories, helped me make new friends, see new places I never imagined and it's something unique everyone looks at.
There's no shame on being different, be proud that you actually are :)

I loved this video. You just made my day. I just smashed my rear derailleur on a rock a week ago. It broke the hanger and wrapped through the chainstay. I just cut my chain and finished the ride in 6th gear. 17 miles including bombing downhill with no chain. It was a total blast. When I got home I decided to upgrade to a 1x10 because my rear chain rings were toast from the chain bouncing around from 6 to 8 and back. I asked for advice and most of what I was told was that my 2011 Giant Revel 0 ($700 new) was trash and was not worth upgrading. Its crazy that I should need to spend $1500 more to keep riding when all i spent was $40 on a used Praxxis 11-42, $15 on a complete used x7 drive train, and $15 on a new narrow wide 34T front sprocket. The down side was that I had to buy a $18 jockey wheel and a $20 mount for the x7 shifter. All in all it was a cheap fix. So $140 including the new derailleur hanger. I say money well spent.
Hell, I just spent more than that on my new treads; that I made tubeless by cutting the shrader valve out of an old motorcycle tire and some gorilla tape. Now Im off to find some new take off hydraulic brakes that are not up to snuff for someone else. Thanks again for the smile.

I love your point! I started on a Trek bike just like that and did the same thing: I learned to bike on it, ended up taking it on some crazy stuff including a lift-serviced bike park, jump lines, crazy off the grid natural trails. I took it on the same drops and jumps my friends did on their expensive full suspension bikes and my entry level bike handled it all! Even a basic bike like this is built like a tank nowadays and can handle all sorts of abuse. Just get out there and ride!

This is the same exact mountain bike I own. Bought it new in 2013 as my first mountain bike. Have raced 2 years of XC mountain biking with it in high school plus more. As of recently I took it to Dupont State Forest and Pisgah! The upgrades I currently have on it are tires, hydraulic brakes, and a RockShox Recon Silver fork. I have gone through a derailleur and a rear wheel in time with the bike. I will say that I'm now ready to give this thing a new home and upgrade to a new, lighter bike with a 1x setup. I don't plan to upgrade it any further. I will be sticking with the 29er hardtail style though.

I put a wider handlebar and shorter stem to start off with and then I got the same rockshox 30 fork. The bike had hydraulic disc brakes already so I'm good in that department. A good set of tires made a huge difference as well. Next up is probably the same drivetrain as you used there, but like you said I'm gonna wait until mine strops working properly, no point in upgrading now since it shifts perfectly.

Jason W we bought my Wife the catalyst recently as newbs and realized its not even a Trail rated bike, the forks literally have a sticker saying don’t take it on trails, the derailleur is same and not at all Trail rated, we would have to spend around $600.00 to do what this guy did in the video to upgrade the bike, so instead we found a new bike on a great sale, normally $950 we paid $600.00 , it was a no brainer and now we have a bike with parts just as good if not a bit better than the upgrades in this vid and also a left over non Trail rated bike to sell.

Love it! That's how I always do bike stuff. It stems from my box days where you buy a complete, upgrade it as you go along until you pull the trigger on the frame you want. It helps distinguish your own bike from others who bought a complete that's spec'd with good stuff out of the box.
      Keep bikes interesting!

    • @teamramrodmtb
      @teamramrodmtb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's also one of the best ways to get the groupset components that you want. Looking at hardtails I wanted something with Deore and/or Altus components, and an XC30 or air fork. I was going to buy an $1,100 hardtail to get what I wanted, but the bike shop that dealt them went out of business suddenly. I ended up settling on a much cheaper Fuji Nevada, which has the Deore and Altus mix going, but cheaper front fork and it's a 3x9. While the drivetrain shifts good I might change it for a 1x10 when I wear out the cassette or damage a chainring. If the Suntour XCM fork starts flexing at all I'm going to put an XC30 on it. But actually the XCM seems pretty decent so far, but any of the lower end Suntour forks are pure garbage.

That turned out real nice, I started with a rigid steel single speed and did great many miles on it including a 215km XC Marathon. After a nasty accident while bike commuting I bought a geared mountain bike, a 2013 Kona Kahuna, as I was advised by my doctor to not push it too hard with the single speed. I still own that bike and the only thing left from the stock build is the frame. As parts started to wear I upgraded them for something better, I did end up spending a lot of money on it, but that bike has been my trusty mtb steed for many years, the frame is absolutely perfect for me and I don't regret it at all. I still ride the singlespeed on mellower rides and I added a fat bike to the bike stable because n+1. The thing is enjoy what you have ride it as much as possible and when the time to replace parts comes around you can treat yourself to something better and it'll feel like a brand new bike.

Hey man, you make incredibly helpful content for a novice mtb modder/ rider. I've restored old single speed bikes but I have very little knowledge of modern equipment and modifications. You have a good way of articulating things to make them very understandable. You remind me a lot of Taylor Ray. You'll be really successful if you stay consistant man. I know your numbers already show that though lol. Stoked for you to have some videos blowing up!

Pretty cool video. I have the same bike. Recently bought it off craigslist and was thinking the same when upgrading parts. Mines had a rockshox fork, same as the one you swap out. Now it's a 3x9 setup, but would love to go to a 1x10 setup. Now I find myself using the second gear mainly of my three upfront.

I have a 2011 Trek Advance Gary Fisher Edition and I've ridden everywhere on it. Even the 30 mile Leadville Series in Texas some years back. Put slicks on it and did the Pedal to Padre, downtown Brownsville, downtown San Antonio. No need for the fancy stuff. Thanks for the video.

You are amazing! I ride exactly the same bike, got it on Craigslist 2 years ago, Rusty and squeeky. Now I am getting a bit more into manuals and bunny hops and thinking about a new bike... Or upgrading. Forks are mush and brakes so bad even after sanding them down. Thanks for doing the video, upgrade might be the way to go!

I remember being a kid and saving up to buy a $800 kona scrap with some help. I rode that thing everywhere and did everything on that thing including the local DH course, DJ, hucks to flat, trails and just riding around town. When I retired it I did so because I'd upgraded not because there was anything wrong with it. Gotta work with what you have, now I'm building a HT from the frame up because I haven't owned one since that bike and I'm feeling nostalgic haha.

I am currently going through this process with my Felt Nine Trail. I changed out the crankset to Alivio Octalink when i bent the crappy suntour square taper. Just received a Reba Race fork i ordered on ebay.(straight steerer). I splurged on some hydraulic shimano XT brakes also from ebay. I guess its similar to this except for the drivetrain. I'll just keep it as is until it really gets damaged. Now I am hoping it feels more like a bike higher in the range. Thanks for the vid bro.

Thank you for this video. I have an entry level Cannondale and went to my local bike shop to do some upgrades and they advised me against all my ideas when all I was asking was for help on what to order. I was going to do the wok myself and order from them. I just needed guidance. Which I did not get. Was very discouraging.

I just did very similar upgrades to my Cannondale Catalyst. I got a Shimano SLX 1x groupset and got a great deal on XT brakes. I went with a Manitou Marvel fork because it was on of the few I could find with a straight steerer. The cockpit and wheelset are Raceface Aeffect, and the tires are WTB Trail Boss 2.25 x 27.5. It rides so much better with the upgrades! You have a good point aboit the Suntour forks. Super flexy and heavier than the frame AND fork I replaced it with combined!

I live in Southern Utah, lots of rocky and rugged terrain. Almost EVERYONE rides the nicest and lightest full SUS bikes, save for my one buddy who rides a fully rigid SS who is my favorite person to ride with. So when I bought a $800 27.5+ hardtail (retailed for $1200) everyone pretty much just scoffed at me even though Im always down to ride anything and everything everyone wants to ride; single track, slick rock, downhill. So I definitely like your viewpoint on just riding a damn bike regardless of parts or components. +1

Great advice about not letting your price point bike letting you stop which trails you ride. I just have a Trek Merlin 7 and I ride hard trails with it and getting more and more confident on the dropins and jumps, and I find rocky steep hill climbs "fun" (not even kidding). It is a 29er mind you. Only "upgrade" so far is a maxxis rear tyre. I plan to reduce it to a single chain ring rather than the current 3x as I only use the middle ring anyway 99% of the time. And I'll upgrade the front tyre soon too as the stock tires dont give you much....confidence. And I'll replace the plastic pedals with metal ones as they're getting smashed haha. But it's all optional. The bike isn't "stopping me" at all.

My first bike was a 2006 Gary Fisher Marlin 26er I bought new and used as a gravel grinder but didn’t ride much. I just got into mountain biking last year and used that bike in its stock condition. The manitou shock didn’t last long so I started upgrading parts as needed. Still running the original 3x8 shimano alivio drive train and rim brakes, I figure if it was good enough for our mountain biking forefathers it’s good enough for me. I recently picked up an old Gary Fisher Sugar 2 frame, so this winter I am going to switch my components over from the Marlin and make the move to full sus. I may have to work harder than my buddies to keep up, but I figure it makes me a better rider than if I had a more modern bike.

I've just bought a second hand entry level hardtail (spesh comp 2009) a little tlc, new tires, full clean and regrease etc and it's like a brand new bike, it's cost me less than £200 altogether, I fully intend to ride everything that's put before me on it, it's not about what parts you have or how expensive your bike is as long as you're having a good time.

I have a scott aspect, some 700usd when bought 5 years ago. It came with coil suntour fork, slightly better than the video's. 3x9 drivetrain and hydraulic brakes. After many miles, I decided to make some upgrades this year. An air fork, epixon by suntour too. 2x10 drivetrain, with xt rear derailleur. And clipless pedals at last. The difference is really impressive. Downhill the fork marks the difference and the new drivetrain makes the ride smoother. The pedals need to be tested as yet. Maybe I should have gone for 1x11 drivetrain, but here the difference in price is way too much. The spare parts went to another frame, just for commuting, so, no real high investment was made. Nice video

Good video! As an entry level mtb rider with an older 2005 trek 3900...do you think there would be an issue swapping out my square tapered bb with a hollow tech while keeping the 3x8 drivetrain? All I'd have to buy is the new bb and new chainrings, correct?

The only Gary Fisher Trek I've seen in the wild and rode was a 2011 X-Calibre. And it was solid bike. Seems after that year, it was only a name and junk parts. I do exactly what you do with older Norco and Treks. Find them cheap and dead...bring them back to life with decent parts. Excellent discussion on bike upgrades. Thanks for the video. Peace Brother!

Once then I have changed the fork to a Rockshox XC 32 and changed the tektro brakes to still mechanical BB7. This was all in a span of 2 years of owning the bike. Enjoy the message from this video: use what you got, get out and ride! My son rode a Spez Hardrock for a couple of years, all 14kgs of it, worst progression on his suntour fork over ever seen, in fact had an otb incident too! I’ll never forget selling that bike and get him a Spez Epic with rock shox reba fork and brain shock at the rear, his performance at events went through the roof, he felt fresher and more energized from the confidence the bike gave him.
If you can spend more money, my recommendation is that a softtail is the way to go!
