Kerbal Speedrun - Building, Launching, Landing, Returning from Mun

  • Forget the science, let's see how fast I can go from an empty VAB to the surface of the mun and then back to kerbin. And then, let's see how fast everyone else can do it.
    Rules:
    1) start with empty VAB
    2) build a vehicle one part at a time, no subassemblys
    3) launch to moon, you may have already setup correct orientation.
    4) land softly on moon for at least a second, a bounce does not count.
    5) return to kerbin and land safely
    Stock KSP 1.2.2 only, no mods allowed, no custom categories, video needed for verification.
    I'll have another go, because I know I can do better, also, there are other records to attempt.

      That's why you build a Station in space with docking ports. Fuel and Re-Fuel. Also helps that the game has fuel 'mining' so you don't always have to launch from Kerbin if you build reusables.

    You should do another category where the ingame time actually matters, I feel like it is kind of weird that part of your speedrun is dependant on how fast you can timewarp.

    • @Turalcar
      @Turalcar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      He did that a year ago: Moon landing and back in 1 hour ingame time.

    • @Ansatz66
      @Ansatz66 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      That's the only kind of speedrun that really matters. Who cares how fast you can assemble a rocket or how much you can time accelerate? The interesting thing is how fast the rocket you design can fly.

    • @NeonGen2000
      @NeonGen2000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Why not just invent a new term, instead of completely redefining what a speedrun means just for KSP.

    • @ArkanoidZero
      @ArkanoidZero 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      NeonGen2000 in game time and RTA are both timing methods used in various speed games, and most games also have multiple categories of various seriousness.

    • @minddude1673
      @minddude1673 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      as cool as that might be, timewarp is literally what makes 90% of traveling in ksp easy, it would take hours, even days to get to the mun in In-game time, also other speedruns are also dependent on the time warp since its part of the reason that makes the speedrun shorter..

  • @georgelionon9050
    @georgelionon9050 7 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Awesome.
    I think the speed run should include a flag plant tough. (that wasnt a stable landing)

    • @Hamachingo
      @Hamachingo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no need to be really stable, kerbal can jump out, plant flag and jetpack to the hatch of the stumbling rocket really quickly with good jetpack skills. Fire engine when rocket is not pointing down and you can get it off the ground.

    • @georgelionon9050
      @georgelionon9050 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hamachingo, that would be fair enough.

    • @TheVallin
      @TheVallin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even if the rocket fell over, a good maneuver with the SAS or RCS can aid a lift off. Might make you dizzy but it's doable.

    • @georgelionon9050
      @georgelionon9050 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't care, IMO everything would be fair as long the flag stands on the moon and keeps standing.

    To eliminate the wobbles in the stock game, attach a landing strut to the FL-T800 and/or any other wobbly parts. Landing struts are auto-strut locked to the heaviest part. A couple LT-2 struts are also long enough to give a bit more crash tolerance while touching down. It would take a few more seconds to place the struts (~5 seconds based on this video), but 4x physics would be available.
    For suicide burns, the craft info on the map shows an estimated burn time to 0 m/s. Placing a maneuver node a little above the surface of the target gives a reference point, and right-clicking on the maneuver node while it isn't editable keeps the time to maneuver visible for easier warping.
    Right-clicking any mouse-over info in the map keeps the it visible, which is very useful when fine-tuning maneuver nodes, so you don't have to leave the maneuver node editor to see the closest approach, periapsis, etc..

    Hey Scott, when you put the decoupler on the heatshield within the first minute of the game you said "oh crap, not on their properly". As far as I can tell, it was. Heatshields have two nodes on their underside, one further down than the other, that allows you to connect to a heatshield (and detach correctly too) without having to use the ugly shroud AND without there being a large gap between the shield and the lower part.
    I literally never use the node which auto-generates the shroud, I think it looks far too ugly and using the other node allows for slightly more compact (and pretty) designs.

    If you press C and view in the cockpit there's actually the height dail that shows the height relative to the ground... :-) So no need to worry about being too low when doing the suicide burn. :-)

    Drop the heat shield during your parachute descent....you get an extra 1+m/s in a full expanded parachute descent.

    Scott, you could shave a lot of time off if you spent more time stabilizing it in the assembly building, then you could x4 warp and potentially save a lot of time.

    if you manage to land on water on the next run try not opening the parachute until you're like 5000 meters above probably would save some time if you're going too fast spin around a bit to slow yourself down

    3:05 You don't know resets until you've at least seen someone attempt Super Metroid any%. Not only are there a lot, they're spread out throughout the length of a 42-min game, that will gladly kill you a the 40-min mark. (Just watch the SGDQ 2016 speedrun race)

    Adjust opening of the parachute height to less and land in sea. That could help.
